You see a piano right? A piano is simply a musical instrument, which when played perfectly, produces melodious sounds . This , along with other instruments are basically the tools of music. Let's dive into the world of music now , and let me show you one or two things you may not know about classical music. According to the Concise Oxford Dictionary , "music is the art of combining vocal or instrumental sounds ( or both) to produce the beauty of form , harmony, and expression of emotion." In my own definition, I'll simply say it's the the combination of organized sounds to create a melodious feeling to the listeners. There's no known person who we can say invented music , but from the first songbird or nightingale that produced it's melodious sound, I can say that music has been from the very beginning. Let's now highlight some of the importance of music and why you should be involved in music ; According to the research conducted by university of London psychologist Felicity Callard, "Music training improves working memory and leads to increased IQ scores" Imagine a pianist performing , his eyes fixed on his score, his brain constantly reminding him to flow with the timing, his fingers moving up and down the piano in an orderly manner, his foot on the sustain pedal applying the effect when necessary, all these happening at the same time. This shows coordination. Music trains you on being coordinated. Your brain keeps working and in turn this builds you. Also , remember the story of how David was able to calm the mad king Saul with solemn sounds from his harp? Have you ever been feeling down and then you listen to a calm piece , hum a melody or just start playing your instrument? You must have noticed that once you do that, it lightens your mood , you feel happy, you feel glad. That's the power of music. Let's also talk about how being a musician can help you to be committed to everything you do . Before one can become an expert in music, he/she has to put time into practice. Sometimes 8-10 hours a day , this is no easy feat, it just shows how we train ourselves to concentrate on what we love and how to commit . A bonus importance is that in this way , you can be an effective problem solver. Once you can be committed, you train your mind and when you encounter a problem, your mind automatically searches for a solution and processes it to you. I'll refer back to the statement from Felicity Callard, a musician is naturally smart . As long as you know all the music keys, the theory of music, the musical symbols and other things involved in music, trust me there's nothing more you'll find too challenging. I love when I see children introduced into music at a very young age. These kids grow up to shine and excel in their various fields even among their average peers. I could go on and on, but I'll stop here. Music is very important and you should be involved in it, and trust me , the sky will be your limit. © Eyiwe Daniel
