Mankind's earliest settlers on the Martian frontier do what they must to survive the cosmic elements and each other.

South African wilderness 1800's. Five years after their mother's death, preadolescent Rachel and 5-year-old Jamie find themselves on their way to the virgin gold fields with their father Herman as he tries to start a new life. When Jamie goes missing in a freak blizzard, Rachel braves the snowstorm to search for her little brother in the 19th-century South-African wilderness.

Juan return to Cape Town with his family from their life in England when he discovers his mother is dying. She insists she wants her conflicted son to reconcile with his alcoholic dad, but all the younger man remembers of his childhood is disappointment and shame and though he wants to be with his mother he intensely dislikes his father, though it's probably more a case of Juan hating who he is himself, because of his father.

Rachel, a Mozambican domestic worker living in Johannesburg, is forced to make a life-changing decision after her daughter tragically dies under the care of her employers: return to poverty-stricken Mozambique or continue working for the people responsible for her child's death. Things become even more complicated when she finds out that her employers are expecting their first child.
