'Phase IV' Is a Psychedelic Horror Classic from a Graphic Designer
Image
Alfred Hitchcock, Stanley Kubrick, John Frankenheimer... that's a robust list of directors who've created certain films that frighten the living daylights out of us all. But there's one classic psychedelic feature that a rather special candidate made. Trailblazing graphic designer Saul Bass designed the posters and title sequences for films by those three directors and countless others, and he also released a few short films in his lifetime. However, his sole feature film is a horror offering, Phase IV, released in 1974. It grew to have a legion of fans, not only for its striking sci-fi plot about super-intelligent ants in the Arizona desert, but also for its haunting visual style and score, and its meticulous use of macro-photography.

Although this was the only feature-length film from Saul Bass, he was still a key figure in Hollywood with instantly recognizable work, famous for his distinguished posters and title sequences. Far more than a designer,...

I Also Do This: ‘American Primeval’s Taylor Kitsch On Developing A Passion For Hunting Bears, Wolves & Other Wildlife Armed With A Camera
Image
Exclusive: I Also Do This is an occasional look at the surprising creative outlets of members of the Hollywood community. The series began with producer Denise Dinovi’s pandemic plunge into painting after the shocking death of her husband

After bursting on the scene as Friday Night Lights’ hellraising fullback Tim Riggins, Taylor Kitsch tried the fast lane to stardom and found it wanting, with John Carter and Battleship sinking. Kitsch regrouped and found a far more interesting path, playing film and TV roles that captured the heartland sensibilities and vulnerabilities that made the Dillon Panthers’ #33 so appealing, the rough-and-tumble Texas kid with a heart of gold.

Those roles, many of them done in collaboration with director and Fnl exec producer Peter Berg, have ranged from playing the late Patchogue legend Navy Seal Michael Murphy in Lone Survivor; a tragic opioid-addicted everyman in the series Painkiller; and cult leader David Koresh...

Jane’s Addiction Members Making New Music Without Perry Farrell
Image
Following an onstage fight that apparently broke up Jane’s Addiction, three of the four members are making new music together. Bassist Eric Avery, guitarist Dave Navarro, and drummer Stephen Perkins are recording new songs minus singer Perry Farrell.

Back in September, Jane’s Addiction made headlines when Farrell got into a physical altercation with Navarro during a show in Boston, at one point punching the guitarist onstage. As the two musicians were being separated, it appeared that Avery landed a few blows on Farrell. And a later report from a crew member revealed that Farrell punched Navarro again — this time in the face — backstage shortly thereafter.

The rest of the band’s tour was canceled, and while an official announcement was never made, Navarro suggested that the band had broken up in an Instagram post, saying, “I’m gutted that things ended this way.”

Now, Avery, Navarro, and Perkins...

10 Best Comedy Movies From the 1970s, Ranked
Image
During the 1970s, American cinema was in the midst of the New Hollywood movement. When the Production Code officially lost all its power in the late 1960s, American films no longer had to abide by the oppressive and restrictive rules that had been in place for the past three decades. The Production Code's dismantling led to an explosion of creativity, particularly in the comedy genre.

In today's cultural climate, comedies do not typically receive the same level of adulation as dramas. However, throughout the 1970s, comedies ranked among Hollywood's most acclaimed genres. Comedies such as M*A*S*H, The Sting, American Graffiti, and Annie Hall each garnered Academy Award nominations for Best Picture, with The Sting and Annie Hall both winning the Oscar's top prize. Filmmakers like Woody Allen, Hal Ashby, and Mel Brooks reigned supreme as some of the best comedy directors working in the United States during the 1970s.

Why Tim Burton's Batman Returns Made Parents Furious
Image
Quick Links Batman Returns Is a Dark Superhero Movie The Batman Merchandise Tie-Ins Didn't Help Tim Burton Had His Vision for Batman, and It Changed the Franchise Forever

1989's Batman plays like a standard studio movie more often than a Tim Burton original because that's exactly what it was. But when that movie proved to be a success, Warner Bros. was antsy to get a sequel into production. Given that the movie was a hit with both critics and audiences, the studio was looking to get Burton back on board.

But Burton didn't feel quite as excited. In fact, he didn't really care to make a sequel at all, given that he felt he would again be restricted by the studio's requests to make as macro-scale-appealing a blockbuster as possible. So, to return, Burton required total creative control, and Warner Bros. agreed. In fact, they were even excited about the...

U2 Star Adam Clayton’s Irish Showband Series ‘Ballroom Blitz’ Set For International Launch
Image
Exclusive: Rock star Adam Clayton will explore the unique phenomenon of the Irish showband in doc series Ballroom Blitz. The show, from Dublin based Sideline Productions, has been commissioned by Irish pubcaster Rte. Seasoned international exec Michael Murphy will be at MIPCOM looking to attach a distributor.

The Irish showbands entertained young audiences in Ireland during a moment of growth and prosperity in the 1960s. They were normally a seven or eight piece outfit with powerful horn sections and they interspersed waltzes, Irish music and jazz with the pop hits of the day.

There is a U.S. dimension to the story. Sixty years before U2 played Las Vegas at the Sphere in 2024, Irish showbands entertained American audiences during residencies in Vegas and packed out Irish ballrooms in New York, Boston and Chicago. Their U.S. success was managed by the mercurial Bill Fuller who ended up owning over thirty ballrooms in Ireland,...

Jane’s Addiction Frontman Perry Ferrell Apologizes To Dave Navarro & Bandmates After Onstage Fight With Guitarist; Tour Canceled
Image
Updated with Farrell statement: Jane’s Addiction frontman Perry Ferrell apologized this morning for a onstage confrontation he initiated with the band’s Dave Navarro in Boston on Friday.

In a statement issued to multiple outlets, Ferrell said, “This weekend has been incredibly difficult and after having the time and space to reflect, it is only right that I apologize to my bandmates, especially Dave Navarro, fans, family and friends for my actions during Friday’s show. Unfortunately, my breaking point resulted in inexcusable behavior, and I take full accountability for how I chose to handle the situation.”

Ferrell’s onstage combustibility has long been a powerful feature of the band’s presence, with the singer often riffing between songs on issues both political and personal. But over the weekend his invective was turned directly on Navarro. The singer shouted at the guitarist during a portion of the band’s fierce,...

The Only Major Actors Still Alive From The Arrangement
Image
In 1960, Kirk Douglas had helped to break the Hollywood Blacklist with "Spartacus" by publicly crediting then-blacklisted writer Dalton Trumbo as the screenwriter. But in 1969, he found himself working with a director who had been anything but helpful to his Hollywood colleagues during the height of McCarthyism. Sadly, this team-up between Douglas and director Elia Kazan also had the unfortunate distinction of being one of the Greek-American filmmaker's most derided films.

"The Arrangement" currently has a 15% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which should tell you pretty much all you need to know about how this ill-fated drama was received upon release. The film is an adaptation of Kazan's own 1967 novel of the same name and follows LA advertising executive Evangelos Topouzoglou/Eddie Anderson (Douglas) as he endures a protracted nervous breakdown (which is what watching this incredible trailer feels like). Critics at the time were merciless with their condemnation of Kazan's film,...

Dabney Colemans 1984 Spy Thriller Is a Timeless Classic
Image
Quick Links Davey Osborne Creates a Fantasy World and an Imaginary Hero Cloak & Dagger Is a Hitchcockian Children's Thriller Jack Flack Always Escapes Until Children Stop Believing Cloak & Dagger tiptoes the line between thrilling and too dark for kids by placing a child in danger without going too far. The film blends fantasy and thriller elements, borrowing a style from Alfred Hitchcock to create a unique viewing experience. By portraying villains as one-dimensional automata, Cloak & Dagger keeps a light tone despite its intense storyline.

When a film places a child in danger, as is the case throughout the 1984 childrens action-adventure film Cloak & Dagger, such a film risks offending an audiences sensibilities. ‘The Legend of Lylah Clare’ Gets Fest Relaunch and Director Robert Aldrich Gets Reputation Rehabbed
Image
When Robert Aldrich’s 1968 Hollywood insider yarn, “The Legend of Lylah Clare” screens at the Maine International Film Festival in Waterville, Maine, it will represent much more than a simple revival of a New Hollywood-era roman à clef.

The film’s presentation on July 12 will include a discussion between actor Michael Murphy, who co-stars in the film, and former MGM publicity director Mike Kaplan, who has from the film’s earliest screenings defended both the film’s director, who Kaplan feels was “grossly maligned” by the depiction of him in Ryan Murphy’s limited series “Feud,” and the film, which monumentally tanked both critically and commercially when first released.

Kaplan recalls “I loved the script, and I loved the film. MGM had an unexceptional slate at the time. I was a big fan at the get-go.”

But as MGM’s New York City-based publicity chief, Kaplan watched helplessly as others,...

Why Peter Berg and Mark Wahlberg Should Go Back to Biopics
Image
Peter Berg has had an interesting career trajectory, and has earned his reputation as a filmmaker unafraid to tackle nearly every genre. While Berg has certainly not had a perfect track record, his greatest achievements suggest that he’s on the verge of creating a truly sensational project if handed the right material. Berg began his career primarily working in action films, including Dwayne Johnson’s star-making adventure film The Rundown and the military thriller The Kingdom. After the highly negative reaction that his science fiction film Battleship received, Berg took a break from crowd pleasers to initiate a new partnership with Mark Wahlberg.

Wahlberg was in a similar place as an actor; he seemed to be interested in everything from prestigious arthouse projects to generic studio comedies. However, the duo successfully worked together on the films Lone Survivor, Deepwater Horizon, and Patriots Day, each of which analyzed a recent...

Gravitas Ventures Founder & CEO Nolan Gallagher To Step Down In March; New Leadership Will Be Announced In Coming Months
Image
Gravitas Ventures said Friday that Nolan Gallagher, who founded the indie distributor in Los Angeles in 2006, will be stepping down as CEO and leaving March 31 to focus on soccer team ownership in Cleveland.

The news was revealed by Anthem Sports & Entertainment, which acquired Gravitas Ventures in November 2021 and owns a range of entertainment properties including Axs-tv, HD Net Movies, Fight Network and Impact Wrestling.

Under Nolan’s leadership, Gravitas became a global all-rights theatrical distribution company that released more than 3,000 films on VOD, winning recognition from the Film Independent Spirit Awards, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences and numerous film festivals.

In 2019, co-owners Gallagher, Michael Murphy and Brendan Gallagher moved Gravitas Ventures to Cleveland to further economic momentum for media & entertainment in their hometown. Gravitas Ventures Founder Stepping Down as CEO to Focus on His… Cleveland Soccer Team
Image
Nolan Gallagher, the CEO of the Cleveland-based film distributor Gravitas Ventures, is stepping down from the company he founded to run a new expansion soccer team he bought last year.

It’s not the typical trajectory for most media execs, of course. After relocating Gravitas Ventures to his hometown of Cleveland in 2019, Gallagher and the distributor’s co-owner Michael Murphy were awarded ownership of a new soccer team through Major League Soccer (Mls) Next Pro in November 2022 (via their nonprofit Cleveland Soccer Group Foundation). The team doesn’t have a name yet, but Gallagher is focusing his full time on the club ahead of kickoff in 2025.

Gallagher will step down effective March 31, 2023. His exit comes on the heels of Anthem Sports & Entertainment’s acquisition of Gravitas Ventures in November 2021.

Nolan Gallagher Steps Down as CEO of Gravitas Ventures
Image
Nolan Gallagher, the founder of Gravitas Ventures, will step down as CEO and leaving the film company on March 31, 2023.

Gravitas was sold to Anthem Sports & Entertainment, the owner of Fight Network and HD Net Movies, in November 2021. Gravitas has released more than 3,000 films on video on demand (VOD) during Gallagher’s time at the company. Some of those films also had theatrical releases. Gravitas’ recent films include “Mack & Rita” with Diane Keaton; “Our Friend,” starring Casey Affleck, Dakota Johnson, and Jason Segel; and “Vanguard,” starring Jackie Chan.

Anthem said it has retained an advisor to identify a successor to Gallagher and expects to make a decision within the coming months.

In 2019, Gallagher and co-owners Michael Murphy and Brendan Gallagher moved Gravitas Ventures from Los Angeles to Cleveland, Ohio. Gallagher and Murphy recently announced they were awarded ownership of a Major League Soccer (Mls) Next Pro men’s professional...

Gravitas Ventures Founder Nolan Gallagher Stepping Down to Focus on Mls Next Pro Team Ownership
Image
Nolan Gallagher’s time running Gravitas Ventures will soon come to an end.

After 17 years, the founder and CEO will depart the distribution company as of March 31, after which time he will focus on an upstart Major League Soccer Next Pro men’s professional soccer team in Cleveland. The team is scheduled to begin league play in 2025. Per today’s news, Gravitas owner Anthem Sports & Entertainment — a multinational media company founded by Leonard Asper — is expected to announce new leadership in the coming months.

He won’t be relocating to Cleveland as he’s already there. In 2019, Gallagher and Gravitas co-owners Michael Murphy and Brendan Gallagher moved the company to the Ohio city in a bid to “further economic momentum for media and entertainment in their hometown,” per the company. The soccer team is the latest push to continue those efforts.

In a statement about his exit, Gallagher explained...

Donald Glover
Donald Glover to Star in Movie Based on Obscure Spider-Man Villain Hypno-Hustler
Donald Glover
Donald Glover is attached to star in and produce a movie based on Spider-Man villain Hypno-Hustler, based on Sony’s Universe of Marvel Characters.

Michael Murphy, the son of actor and comedian Eddie Murphy, is attached to write the script. The untitled project is in very early development.

Hypno-Hustler is a rather villain who first appeared in 1978’s “Peter Parker, the Spectacular Spider-Man” #24, and was created by Bill Mantlo and artist Frank Springer. The character’s unmasked name is Antoine Desloin, and he is the lead singer of the Mercy Killers. Hypno-Hustler uses hypnosis equipment in his instruments to rob the audience. In the comics, Spider-Man was able to defeat Hypno-Hustler by removing his headphones, causing him to become a victim of his own hypnosis.

The Count Yorga Collection

Blu-ray

Arrow Video

1970, 1971 / 1.85: 1 / 190 Min.

Starring Robert Quarry, Michael Murphy, Mariette Hartley

Written by Bob Kelljan, Yvonne Wilder

Directed by Bob Kelljan

An aristocratic bloodsucker from the old country is the main attraction of Bob Kelljan’s Count Yorga, Vampire, but what drives the movie is an actual motor, a 1969 Volkswagen bus with a blood red trim. That amiable vehicle, the stoner’s favorite mode of transportation, is front and center in several pivotal scenes (Yorga even hitches a ride) and comes to symbolize the film’s premise; an old-fashioned vampire at large in The Me Decade. The set-up is ripe for a satire like Joe Dante’s The Howling, but instead of taking the stuffing out of horror movie cliches, Kelljan is dead serious about the undead.

Robert Quarry plays Yorga, a vampire whose standard uniform of cape and tuxedo sets him apart from the...

Top Las Vegas Official Arrested In Stabbing Death Of Investigative Reporter
Image
A top Las Vegas-area public official was arrested tonight in connection with the fatal stabbing of a well-known investigative journalist on Friday night, according to multiple news reports.

Clark County Public Administrator Robert “Rob” Telles was taken into custody at his home this evening by a Swat team as part of the investigation into the killing of Las Vegas Review-Journal reporter Jeff German. The arrest came after police spent hours searching Telles’ home, where they confiscated a vehicle that resembled the SUV tied to the stabbing suspect: a red or maroon Gmc Yukon Denali.

Telles himself was observed this afternoon at his home. He was later taken into custody after a standoff with police with what ABC News described as “non-life-threatening self-inflicted stab wounds.”

Robert Telles just arrived at his house. Reporters asked him if he had any comment. I asked why police towed his vehicle. He had no comment.

Batman Returns
Tim Burton
For my money, director Tim Burton and star Michael Keaton’s second Caped Crusader collaboration Batman Returns (1992), written by recurring podcast guest Daniel Waters and Tfh Guru Sam Hamm, might very well be the best theatrical Batman flick ever. The Dark Knight has appeared in 15 theatrical feature films as of this writing, if you include his two Lego movie appearances. Released 30 years ago today, Returns was a definite hit, but received a slightly more muted box office reception than its 1989 smash predecessor.

When it was first unspooled, the moody, morbid and magnificent sequel grossed 162.8 million stateside (and 266.8 million worldwide), making it the third-biggest domestic blockbuster of 1992. Per The Numbers, that sum is equivalent to 359.8 million in 2022 dollars, a tastier tally than that brought in by the latest celluloid matchup between the Bat, the Cat, and the Penguin, the Robert Pattinson-starring three-hour crime epic The Batman.

The film received mixed-to-positive notices from critics,...

Fabian: Going to the Dogs (Dominik Graf)

In the first hour of Dominik Graf’s Fabian: Going to the Dogs, we see the title character running around 1920s Berlin, bumping into eccentric characters at bars and nightclubs while the camera moves and cuts at a whirlwind pace. It’s a time of indulgence and recklessness for Fabian and other young people in Germany, and then he finds himself standing face to face with a young woman in the back of a club. The camera cuts to a rapid-fire montage of both characters together and in love, scenes from later in the film we haven’t gotten to yet. Up to this point, Fabian was living in the present; without warning he begins to see a future,...

Sally Kellerman, Oscar-Nominated as ‘Hot Lips’ Houlihan in ‘Mash,’ Dies at 84
Image
Sally Kellerman, who was Oscar nominated for her supporting role as Margaret “Hot Lips” Houlihan in Robert Altman’s “Mash” feature film, died Thursday in Woodland Hills, Calif. She was 84.

Her publicist Alan Eichler confirmed her death, and her daughter Claire added that she had been suffering from dementia for the past five years.

Among her other roles were a cameo in Altman’s “The Player,” a professor in Rodney Dangerfield’s “Back to School” and a Starfleet officer in the “Star Trek” episode “Where No Man Has Gone Before.”

The willowy blonde actress with the characteristically throaty voice appeared in two Altman films in 1970; the other was the more experimental “Brewster McCloud,” in which she starred with Bud Cort and Michael Murphy. In this film, which did not have a conventional narrative, Kellerman played Louise, the mother of Cort’s bewinged character, Brewster.

She next starred opposite Alan Arkin...

His friends urge him to move on, but can he?

Kevin Bigley, Vicky Jeudy, Kate Cobb, Joel Allen and Spencer Rayshon Stevenson also star. Smallman and Tara Ansley produced the pic, which was executive produced by Tiffany Boyle, Bryce McGuire, Elsa Ramo and Eric Costello.

The pic, which follows the shakeup of the worldwide annual fitness competition The CrossFit Games in the midst of the pandemic, will debut on iTunes and Apple TV on July 20, followed by digital platforms and VOD on August 3.

“With Covid-19 restrictions allowing for only 10 athletes versus the usual 80-100+, it’s the first and possibly last year we will be able to tell interesting angles from every athlete competing,” the directors said. “We are honored to have been there for this intimate event, and excited for the world to see the behind the scenes of what went on at the 2020 CrossFit Games.”

“The collaboration among the Buttery Bros., CrossFit HQ, and Gravitas has been smooth and it’s great to get the band back together,” said Michael Murphy, President of Gravitas Ventures. “Previous CrossFit films are immediate best-sellers, and we expect the same from Resurgence which is awesome in scope, story-telling, and quality.”

‘Things Heard & Seen’ Review: A Marriage Story with Ghosts Starring Amanda Seyfried, Though Not Much Lies Beneath It
Image
It was 18 years ago — how time flies in the indie world — that the married directing team of Robert Pulcini and Shari Springer Berman brought us “American Splendor,” an achingly humane, scabrously funny, miraculously playful and inventive lower-depths comedy based on the life and work of the lumpen verité comic-book diarist Harvey Pekar, played by Paul Giamatti in a performance of irascible brilliance. The movie was an audacious triumph, and going forward one wanted, and expected, more great things from Pulcini and Berman. In the years since, however, nothing they’ve done has come within miles of living up to the promise of that landmark film. The odd thing is that their earnest empathy and craft is always on display; they have an instinct for pace, for camera angles, for how to seek out three dimensions in places where too many filmmakers settle for two. Yet lightning has never struck again for them.
