Alfred Hitchcock is one of the most prolific directors of all time. He made a name for himself with such suspenseful thrill rides as Rear Window, The Birds, North by Northwest, and Vertigo. While these movies are gripping, there's no doubt that The Master of Suspense is best known for being behind the camera for Psycho. He was briefly in front of the camera as well when his recognizable profile can be seen right outside of the window.
Psycho, released in 1960, follows a man named Norman Bates (Anthony Perkins) who goes on a murder spree at the Bates Motel. He's been driven to insanity by killing his mother and lover and, as a result, creates an alter ego he refers to as "Mother." The iconic shower kill in Psycho is now in the pantheon of most famous scenes in cinematic history. Because this scene is so impactful, viewers may have...

Alfred Hitchcock's iconic 1963 film The Birds is remembered for its high concept and cutting-edge special effects of the time. Considered by Hitchcock to be potentially "the most terrifying motion picture" he had ever made, it centered around a small town attacked by its local avian population. It was based on a short story by Daphne du Maurier. Hitchcock adapted another of the acclaimed author's stories, Rebecca, in 1940 to great success. And even though she would not be as pleased with his second endeavor, it would still go on to become one of his most well-known movies.

Well folks, current event news is ... not great. I won't go into further detail on that, but I'm sure you know what I'm talking about. On top of that, the cold, dead winter is closing in, which means the sun sets around 4:30 P.M. and smothers us in darkness. Things are feeling absolutely apocalyptic right now, which brings us to the subject of this month's horror streaming column: end of the world horror movies! Yes, let's just jump head-first into the bleak uncertainty of the future by watching scary movies about end times. To compile this month's list, I stuck to some loose rules. For one thing, I tried to limit the inclusion of zombie movies — apocalyptic zombie movies are a genre unto themselves, and I'm sure I could fill up an entire list of them, but that's not what I wanted to do here. Also, since this is a horror movie list,...

When Alfred Hitchcock, the Master of Suspense, released The Birds in 1963, film fans constructed theories about the movie's meaning. Although he alluded to the film being revenge for humans' treatment of birds, Hitchcock remained ambiguous about why flocks of aggressive avians swooped down to attack a population, adding fuel to the fire.
As time went on, more theories arose, linking the film to Sigmund Freud's psychology, female sexuality, humans' overall lack of respect for the environment, and more. There's also an undercurrent throughout the plot that represents the love between two people and a mother's jealousy. In the mysterious ending, there is no clear answer.
Some film buffs class Hitchcock's body of work as horror. Some disagree and file it under the thriller genre. Like many of his classic films, The Birds sits between the two. However, many agree on one thing: it's a twisted, chilling, and disturbing piece...

On Sunday, October 27, 2024, Clint Eastwood will premiere his fortieth feature directorial effort, "Juror #2," at the American Film Institute Festival. This feels like a landmark number. It's certainly a landmark achievement, given that Eastwood is 94 years old, an age at which most people are interred. So it's frankly despicable that Warner Bros-Discovery, headed by noted enemy of cinema David Zaslav, has chosen to unceremoniously dump "Juror #2" on 50 screens over its opening weekend, with no plans for expansion or an awards campaign.
While it's possible the film is not, in the eyes of its studio, an awards contender, it has a commercially viable hook (as evidenced by its compelling trailer) and a killer cast headed up by Nicholas Hoult. Moreover, it's a film by Clint Eastwood, a man whose films have earned WB loads of money over the last 50-plus years. He's had an office on the lot for nearly as long,...

In 1963, prolific screenwriter of It's Alive, Larry Cohen, pitched an idea to "Master of Suspense" Alfred Hitchcock of a man trapped inside an isolated phone booth on a sidewalk for the full length of a motion picture. Hitchcock, who regularly weaved claustrophobia into his work, predictably, loved the idea. He had previously set some of his suspense-driven films in such tight places as single apartments and a lifeboat lost at sea. In the case of The Birds, which he had just finished, he trapped star Tippi Hedren in a cage-like phone booth as it is swarmed by bloodthirsty seagulls.

Horror movies have notoriously been snubbed by the Academy Awards, even though so many scary movies clearly deserved to win Oscars. This has become especially apparent with the power of hindsight, as years later, many of the actual Oscar winners have mostly been forgotten by viewers while these horror releases have endured through the ages. The sheer terror and emotion on display in horror movies were also ripe territory for fantastic performances that never got the accolades they deserved.
Many of the best horror movies of all time came out of awards season Oscar-less, and even though most viewers would agree they deserved the award, it seemed the Academy thought differently. Even the technical achievements of horror movies rarely got their due, as categories related to makeup, visual effects, and cinematography have been continually passed over in favor of more Oscar-friendly films. While its impossible to go back and change the past,...

There's a reason the horror genre has rarely waned throughout filmmaking history: it's incredibly versatile. Whether audiences are in the mood for supernatural stories, slasher films, psychological thrillers, or gore fests, there's a sub-genre of horror for everyone. That also includes fans of high-concept horror premises, whose stories are simple but incredibly compelling.
Anyone who's ever written a high-concept horror film (or attempted to) will readily admit that just because a story's foundation might be built upon a brilliant and unique idea doesn't mean it's necessarily going to work. Sometimes, it can make the story that much harder to break. But when high-concept horror films turn out right, they generally become fan favorites with a shelf life that far outlasts their contemporaries.

What could possibly go wrong while shooting a movie with a reported 150 lions, tigers, jaguars, leopards, and elephants? After their 1969 trip to a nature preserve in Zimbabwe, married couple Noel Marshall and Tippi Hedren were inspired to make Roar, a 1981 film about a scientist and his family living in such an environment among wild animals. Perhaps they had never heard or decided to ignore the advice of entertainer W.C. Fields, who famously warned against the inherently difficult nature of working with animals on film. Regardless, Marshall and Hedren, along with their Roar cast and crew, would learn this lesson the hard way.

Hollywood's master of suspense, Alfred Hitchcock earned his reputation as one of the greatest directors of all time thanks to his unrivaled storytelling, innovative techniques, and meticulous attention to detail. This same obsessive pursuit of perfection could also make him difficult to work with and overly controlling of his actors, as Tippi Hedren learned firsthand on the set of The Birds. While he may have been unforgiving toward his stars, Hitchcock's own experiences with a domineering collaborator provided inspiration for a memorable villain in one of his greatest classics.

There’s a story Alfred Hitchcock always liked to tell about how, when he was five years old, his father dropped him off at the local police station near his home in East London. William Hitchcock left a note for the coppers explaining that his son had been misbehaving. A policeman locked young Alfred in a cell for a few minutes and explained, “This is what we do to naughty boys.”
When Hitchcock recounted that story to Dick Cavett he was in his 70s, but the incident continued to leave a profound mark on the director. He said he was still “terrified of the police” because of that and drew a connection from that to the feelings of guilt and wrong-men-on-the-run paranoia that seeps into so many of his films.
The funny thing is, though, father characters are almost entirely absent from Hitchcock’s work. There are a few: Cedric Hardwicke...

Alfred Hitchcock is undoubtedly one of the most influential filmmakers that has ever lived and his films have made a mark on filmmakers today. He has an unusual yet affecting way of inducing suspense and intensity in his films and his works like Psycho, Rebecca, To Catch a Thief, Vertigo, North by Northwest, and The Birds are proof of that.
Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo is one of his most acclaimed films

Horror movie sequels often have no real connection to the original, relying on title recognition for success. Some sequels, like The Birds II and American Psycho 2, were universally panned and regretted by those involved. Zombi 2 and The Curse of the Cat People show that originality can shine, even without ties to the previous film.
Whenever a horror movie became a hit with audiences, it was easy to assume that a sequel would soon follow it, but in some instances, the follow-up movie had nothing to do with the original film. To exploit the success of the first film, a sequel-sounding title was sometimes tacked on to a movie that had a very flimsy connection to its source material. Often, the horror sequels that have nothing to do with the original movies were based on original scripts that the filmmakers or studios retroactively reconfigured to work as a sequel.

In an oeuvre filled with classics, 1963's The Birds is one of Alfred Hitchcock's most famous and beloved, and its influence can be seen throughout the last 60 years of horror filmmaking. And yet, from the hundreds of thousands of dollars wasted on phony-looking mechanical birds to real birds attacking the cast and crew to Alfred Hitchcock's allegedly incessant harassment of star Tippi Hedren, the making of The Birds was almost as terrifying as the movie itself.

Everyone has done jobs they're not particularly proud of in their past. For actors, any of these past works are in the public eye, even if some go on to be largely forgotten. This includes the fan-favorite horror genre, from cheap, grindhouse and direct-to-video schlock to big-budget misfires. Beyond the quality of the movies, some actors just didn't have particularly pleasant experiences behind-the-scenes, leading them to distance themselves from their projects after completion. Every actor has a handful of films that they wish they hadn't signed on for, and with the benefit of hindsight, several have gone public with their regrets.
From established genre icons disappointed at their respective franchise returns to newcomers trying to get their start, horror has no shortage of movies Hollywood stars want off their resume. In a particular instance, one actor's horror movie experience led them to not only regret their participation, but quit acting altogether.

Zendaya stunned crowds in a chrome bodysuit pulled from a 1995 Mugler Couture collection for the Dune: Part 2 world premiere in London on Thursday.
The futuristic look, befitting of the movie in which Zendaya stars, featured shiny sleeves, gloves and pants set over clear plastic. She paired the outfit with a heavy diamond necklace.
Per Vogue, Mugler’s original Fall/Winter show “was memorable more for its performance by James Brown; its cameos by the likes of Tippi Hedren, Patty Hearst, and Veruschka; and its rather liberal use of fetishistic latex.” The description goes on to describe the collection as a “frightening and tantalizing image for the dawn of the Internet age, and a fitting end for this list of the nineties’ most unforgettable fashion shows.”

Speaking with French outlet L’Officiel, Johnson talked about how her independent two-hander “Daddio,” co-starring Sean Penn, took far too long to find a distributor after its Telluride debut last fall. (The film eventually landed a release deal with Sony Pictures Classics and is due out in theaters this year.)
“People are just so afraid, and I’m like, ‘Why? What’s going to happen if you do something brave?’ It just feels like nobody knows what to do and everyone’s afraid. That’s what it feels like. Roar, a 1981 film, used real lions and resulted in multiple animal attacks, making it one of the most dangerous movies ever made. The cast and crew, including the cinematographer, experienced serious injuries, with reported 48 injuries within the first two years of filming. Roar is seen as an exploitation of animals, with some questioning whether these scenes should even be considered stunt work.
A stuntman reacts to Roar's use of real lions in a new video. Released in 1981, the film follows a family living on a nature preserve in Africa with lions. Rip-offs of horror movies often result in strange and low-quality versions of the originals. Some notable rip-offs include Birdemic: Shock and Terror, Offerings, and Dolly Dearest. Rip-offs of movies like A Nightmare on Elm Street and A Quiet Place also exist, but often fail to capture the quality of the originals.
The horror genre is home to some great movies, but these have made way for some truly bizarre rip-offs, too. The world of horror gives a lot of creative freedom to filmmakers as there are countless villains, styles, and stories they can choose from, making way for some scary and engaging stories. Many horror movies have reached cult status and become some of the best of the genre due to their quality and scare factor – but the horror genre is also prone to rip-offs, and given the characters seen in this genre, they are often quite strange.

The Netflix series Wednesday resurrects a character from a funny Addams Family comic strip scene, taking inspiration from a nanny character. Gwendoline Christie plays Principal Weems in the series, drawing inspiration from Alfred Hitchcock films for her character's look. The show pays tribute to the original Addams Family works by incorporating lesser-known characters and making references that require viewer knowledge.

Alfred Hitchcock's 1963 classic "The Birds" is a staple of Hollywood cinema, and it had to age a bit to earn its spot in the canon. The film only earned one Oscar nomination for special effects, but it is easily one of the most well-remembered works in the accomplished director's oeuvre. Almost half a century has passed since the film's release and many of its main actors are no longer with us. Most of them went on to have storied careers, some of them were already established figures of the entertainment industry, but unfortunately only two of them are still alive today.

Horror movies often leave big, unsolved mysteries, like the violent bird attacks in Alfred Hitchcock's "The Birds" or the origins of the entity in "It Follows." Many horror movie mysteries are never explained, like who Billy is in "Black Christmas" or what really happened to the Engel family at the end of "Krampus." The unexplained mysteries in horror movies add to their terror, leaving audiences with unanswered questions, like the origin of the monsters in "Bird Box" or the true identity of the Blair Witch in "The Blair Witch Project."
While many horror movies tell complete stories, there are many others that have left some big, unsolved mysteries. It’s not uncommon for horror movies to end on cliffhangers that never pay off as they don’t expand with sequels, nor is it surprising for them to have plot twists that, more often than not, only make the story more confusing.

Women have always been the foundation of horror movies ever since the genre began. Even though The Evil Dead's Ash suffered, I Spit on Your Grave, Rob Zombie's Halloween and many other movies took violence against women to hyperbolic levels. The Scream franchise and The Menu have helped show horror has finally reached a point where women can endure but take an equally impactful stand, no matter the scenario.

What images flit across your mind when you think about Alfred Hitchcock? The English master of suspense in profile, a with a cigar? Birds accosting Tippi Hendren as she screams? There's no doubt that the prolific director was one of the horror-thriller's greatest pioneers — from Vertigo to Rear Window, there are many classics on his shelf. So one might be inclined, when asked about Hitchcock's tensest moments, to point to these widely-seen films. But Hitchcock directed over 50 movies, and there are bound to be a few somewhat forgotten gems in such a large stack. Rope, a 1948 thriller based, some say, on a true story, is considered one of Hitchcock's best offerings — and yet isn't often at the forefront of our consciousness when we consider his work. It's not too surprising considering the banality of the film's aesthetic and its mixed reviews. Indeed, horror doesn't always hold up after the passage of so much time.

Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds has become such an acknowledged classic and even cultural touchstone that it is easy to forget how revolutionary it was upon its 1963 release. For the Master of Suspense himself, it was a departure in many ways from his previous work while still a testament to his craft and devotion to “pure cinema.” It all but single-handedly created, or at least redefined, an enduring horror subgenre—the animal attack film. Finally, in creating this subgenre, The Birds explores themes of humankind’s place in the world and the unpredictable power of nature. It is also a particularly meaningful film for me as it was my first Hitchcock film and was introduced to me by my grandmother, who was a great fan of classic cinema in general and Alfred Hitchcock in particular. I saw the film during a memorable stay at her home when I was around...

The Netflix series "Wednesday" is unmistakably a Tim Burton production, but that doesn't mean that the show's distinctive look isn't inspired by other auteurs. In fact, one of the characters was modeled after a famous horror film by perhaps the single most world-renowned filmmaker of all time, Alfred Hitchcock. The controversial 1963 classic "The Birds" is full of Hitchcock's signature touches, from a looming sinister force to a fraught relationship between mother and son. But the piece of this natural horror that made its way into "Wednesday" was not the themes — it was the style.
