“Moana 2” has drawn 27.3 million views within the first five days of release on Disney+. It is now the third most successful Disney Animation theatrical film to hit the platform.

The film, which features Auli’i Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson stepping back into their roles as Moana and Maui, respectively, had the largest Disney Animation premiere since “Encanto.”

The first “Moana,” which has amassed 1.4 billion hours streamed, is the most streamed film on Disney+ since the platform’s debut in 2019.

“Moana 2,” which was originally meant to be a Disney+ television show, was released in theaters on Nov. 28 and went on to earn more than $1 billion at the worldwide box office.

Despite the storylines and characters of the films not being entirely faithful to Polynesian legend, fans have credited Disney's efforts in retaining a sense of cultural authenticity.

Moana 2 keeps riding the waves of success as the animated adventure sequel continues thrilling audiences and achieving various box office records. The latest milestone the film is on the verge of surpassing will secure it on a treasured list of the most successful Disney blockbusters in history.

Via Collider, Moana 2 is now one of the 50 highest-grossing Disney films ever thanks to its most recent figures from Dec. 5. The sequel surpassed the 2006 animated film, Cars, to enter the hallowed list, having recently leapfrogged Angelina Jolie's Maleficent and the Johnny Depp-led Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.

Disney's Moana 2 perfectly shows how the character Maui, has changed since his first appearance in the franchise. The sequel to the 2016 phenomenon sees the Montunui wayfinder reunite with the demigod, Maui, on a new journey to find the legendary island, Motufetu, and thwart the plans of the storm god, Nalo. The ensemble cast of Moana 2 is led by Auli'i Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson, reprising their roles of Moana and Maui respectively, and features voice performances from new cast members, including David Fane, Rose Matafao and Hualalai Chang.

Since its release in theaters, Moana 2 has broken box office milestones and has been described as a solid and thrilling sequel to the original movie. Reviews for Moana 2 have praised the movie for its musical soundtrack, its representations of friendship and family, and the believable character development of both Moana and Maui.

Moana 2 has shattered records since its release on November 27, 2024. The film headed into the Thanksgiving holiday with expectations that the film would rake in $125 million to $135 million. However, similarly to its protagonist, the sky was the limit for the film as it accumulated a stunning $225 million over the course of five days. Needless to say, the film is a resounding success and the perfect follow-up to Walt Disney Animation's 2016 hit.

The first Moana film took to screens on November 23, 2016. It opened to $82 million at the box office and went on to amass $680 million at the global box office. However, the film rose to unprecedented levels of success upon being released to streaming platforms. The sequel film was announced in February 2024. Although the sequel was initially meant to be a limited streaming series for Disney+, Disney retracted its decision and opted for a theatrical release; a decision that has now clearly paid off.

Disney is trying to hold on to the first spots at the box office in 2024 and its latest entry, Moana 2, might be able to help. The animated sequel to the 2016 animation has beaten several box office records and is nowhere near done.

Less than a week since its premiere in theaters on Nov. 27, Moana 2 has already sailed to $404.5 million worldwide at the box office, per Deadline. This helped it reach the top 10 of the highest-grossing films of 2024, settling itself in the ninth spot momentarily. However, with just a few days since its premiere, it's already hunting Tim Burton's famous bio-exorcist, ready to take over Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, which ended its theatrical run with $450 million worldwide.

Moana 2 has crossed a new milestone to become one of the year's top grossing films. Moana 2 was released last week on November 27, coming right in time for the Thanksgiving holiday. This release window was extremely successful for the film, which beat out the critically-acclaimed adaptation of Wicked to become the no. 1 movie during its opening weekend. Moana 2 features a leading voice cast including Dwayne Johnson, Auli'i Cravalho, Hualalai Chung, Rose Matafeo, David Fane, Nicole Scherzinger, and Rachel House.

As per Deadline, Moana 2 has now made its way onto the top 10 highest grossing films of the year worldwide.

According to the bio on their website, Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, a musical duo known as Barlow & Bear, are the youngest composers in history to write all the songs for an animated Disney film, and the first female writing team to do so, collaborating with Mark Mancina and Opetaia Foa’i to craft the sounds of Motunui and beyond. The duo’s first collaboration, “The Unofficial Bridgerton Musical” album, won the 2022 Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album. Disney’s “Moana 2” now showing only in theaters.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Disney's Moana 2 is set to bring home between $215 million and $220 million over its opening weekend. This will mark the biggest five-day debut in history, well above The Super Mario Bros. Movie's $204 million opening. It will also become the biggest Thanksgiving weekend opening of all time, well surpassing the previous records held by Frozen and Frozen II at over $93 milion and $125 million, respectively.

Chicago – The highly anticipated sequel to 2016’s “Moana,” naturally “Moana 2,” has created a new character for the island tribe. Moni (voice of Hualālai Chung) is the village storyteller, and a major fanboy of Maui (Dwayne Johnson). The sequel has our hero Moana (voice of Auli’i Cravalho) receiving a signal from her wayfaring ancestors that there are other tribes and people beyond her island and she is tasked with finding them. Moana gathers a crew for her sailing craft … Lolo (Rose Matafeo), Kele (David Fane) and the storyteller Moni (Hualālai Chung). Of course, they will be aided by the DemiGod Maui (Dwayne Johnson) and will confront old and new foes, including an underworld goddess named Mantangi (Awhimal Fraser).

The sequel secured the biggest opening day of 2024 in France ($3.7 million) and the highest-grossing first day for a Disney movie ever in Australia. The film has also found solid footing in Asia, particularly Indonesia and South Korea. At the time of writing, Moana 2 has made $24.1 million in overseas territories along with the $85.5 million it earned across North America, giving it an impressive total of $109.6 million worldwide since its Nov. 27 premiere.

Actor Auli'i Cravalho performed and recorded songs cut from the Moana sequel. However, she confirmed the central theme of the scrapped TV show was retained in the film adaptation.

Co-director Jason Hand said they realized Moana's continuing story "always seemed to be begging for the big screen" when they showed a sample of the TV show to test audiences. "It really allowed us a bigger sandbox, and I think artistry wise, we were able to put more up on screen," he told Radio Times. "So that was really exciting!" Moana: The Series was confirmed in development in 2020, initially meant to launch on Disney+. Disney CEO Bob Iger announced in February 2024 that the series was reworked into a movie sequel.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Moana grossed $57.5 million on its first full day of release yesterday, which includes the $13.8 million made during Tuesday previews. This makes it the single best day for a Walt Disney Animation film ever, and it's the third-highest opening for an animated release behind Inside Out 2 ($63.5 million) and Incredibles 2 ($71.2 million). Last week, photos leaked online that featured Dwayne Johnson on the set of the live-action version of Disney's Moana wearing what appeared to be a muscle suit, and fans had a field day ripping into the 52-year-old star, who brings his animated character of Maui to life in the new production. As large as Johnson is in person, the suit is necessary to help him resemble his animated doppelgänger, who’s covered in tattoos that are vastly different from the ones he already sports, and who has even larger muscles than the former WWE champion.
