Don't kill me, but Mickey 17reminds me of Old. You know, the M. Night Shyamalan movie about the beach that makes you old? How could this be?Mickey 17 is, like, a real movie! It follows a man named Mickey who decides to become an "Expendable," a functional human guinea pig who is (rather painfully) killed and reprinted repeatedly for the sake of medical research trials. Like many of director Bong Joon-Ho's films, Mickey 17 serves as a biting social commentary on the modern workforce and colonialism.
Meanwhile, Shyamalan is a director whose movies are similarly known for their social reflexivity, if not in a less serious fashion. Shyamalan's topical observations usually come in the form of twists, such as in his (infamously) popular modern classic, Old. In fact, there are quite a few thematic similarities between Mickey 17 and Old, despite one being one of the highest-anticipated movies...

The National Theatre production of Oscar Wilde’s “The Importance of Being Earnest,” starring Ncuti Gatwa, has unveiled a trailer ahead of its cinema release on Feb. 20.
The trailer begins with Gatwa, dressed to the nines in a pink gown and matching gloves, playing a piano riff before leaning back to give viewers a sassy wink. Various clips of the filmed performance then tease the show’s offbeat humor, glamorous costumes and talented cast.
The “Doctor Who” and “Sex Education” star plays Algernon Moncrief, a witty yet idle bachelor, alongside Hugh Skinner’s Jack Worthing in the production reimagined by Max Webster.
The play’s provided synopsis is as follows: “While assuming the role of a dutiful guardian in the country, Jack (Skinner) lets loose in town under a false identity. Meanwhile, his friend Algy (Gatwa) adopts a similar facade. Hoping to impress two eligible ladies, the gentlemen find themselves...

In the era of streaming, the lines have continued to blur between movies and TV shows, meaning that some shows feel like they would be much better as movies. There used to be a clear delineation between the two media, but TV trends have dictated that shows should have higher production values, fewer serialized stories and more varied directorial choices. All of these elements are inherently cinematic.
When a new trailer drops on social media, it's sometimes unclear whether the project being sold is a movie or a TV show. This highlights how the two art forms have continued to merge and overlap. Miniseries are even more cinematic than most other TV shows, and many big hits would be even better if they had made a few more cuts to the story and been envisioned as movies instead.

Is that a chill in the air? Perhaps your boots are starting to feel colder and damper with each passing day. Maybe your cheeks are turning pink every time you step outside. Whether we like it or not, winter is here, which means it’s the perfect time to avoid the cold and hurry to your nice, warm movie house. With the holidays right around the corner, repertory theaters are stocking up on Christmas classics and seasonal favorites. For those looking for something more traditional than Brady Corbet’s “The Brutalist” and Robert Eggers’ “Nosferatu,” which release December 20 and December 25, respectively, cinemas in New York and Los Angeles have plenty of options for the whole family, as well as more festive adult fare for those looking to spice things up.

While the Harry Potter franchise spawned numerous blockbuster careers, one period drama from 2019 is still the best thing that any of its young stars have done since. The Harry Potter movies brought their stars into fame at a young age, making Rupert Grint, Daniel Radcliffe, and Emma Watson household names before the actors had even entered their teens. The best movies that Harry Potter cast members have made since the series ended are proof that they had talent to spare, but not all of their ambitious projects have paid off in the 13 years since 2011.

Fear Is the Rider: Ben Mendelsohn, Toby Wallace, & more join Abbey Lee in Australian Outback slasher
Nearly three years have passed since it was first announced that Abbey Lee (Old) and Christopher Abbott (Possessor) had signed on to star in the Australian Outback thriller Fear Is the Rider, which is coming to us from John Michael McDonagh, the BAFTA-nominated writer/director of the 2011 film The Guard… and while the project has lost Abbott in that time, it’s still alive, and Abbey Lee is still attached to star in it. Deadline reports that Lee has now been joined in the cast by Ben Mendelsohn (Star Wars: Rogue One), Toby Wallace (The Bikeriders), and Eliza Scanlen (Babyteeth). Film Constellation and CAA Media Finance will be seeking distribution deals at this week’s American Film Market.

M. Night Shyamalan might be one of the most recognizable directors of all time. He's given us some of the most memorable thrillers and surreal horrors of the past three decades with films like The Sixth Sense, Signs, and Glass. Shyamalan's plots are never straightforward, and with them come many moments that make the audience question reality, feel disturbed into silence, want to throw up, or crack up laughing at how ridiculous the story can get. To list them all here would take longer than anyone has time for, but it is almost a trademark of Shyamalan. To take just a few examples, who could forget the pregnancy in Old, where Kara, at this point portrayed by Eliza Scanlen, becomes pregnant and then gives birth in a matter of minutes before the baby starves to death? One of Shyamalan's most controversial choices sees James McAvoy's character start running on all fours because,...

You just finished The Last Night at Tremore Beach, the latest mind-boggling offering from Oriol Paulo, and now you don’t know what to do with life. Well, the only way to fill the void is to start something similar, and that’s why you’re here. So in this article, I am going to suggest certain movies and shows that you might consider watching if you enjoyed Oriol Paulo’s Netflix show. I hope all of you find something here.
Caddo Lake (2024)
Let us start with something from the very recent past. I could have just suggested Dark instead, but assuming many of you have already seen that show, I urge you to give Caddo Lake a try. Yes, the latest M. Night Shyamalan-produced horror-thriller takes a whole lot of ideas from the iconic Netflix series, but the good thing about the movie is that it also implements the ideas really well.

Some things in life are just certain. Death. Taxes. Robert Pattinson affecting a weird accent in a movie. So, which ones are his absolute weirdest? The competition is pretty tough, if I'm being honest.
Pattinson's accent work isn't just some running bit; as he told Terry Gross and NPR in 2019, it's an essential part of his process. After saying that he and his friends spent their childhoods listening to American rap music and mimicking the accents, Pattinson continued, "And still to this day, I mean, whenever I'm doing a movie or a character in an English accent, I mean, I find -- I literally feel like I'm naked. And I can't -- I'm incapable of doing my normal voice in a character. It just doesn't come out at all. It's -- every single time I read something, the first thing to change is -- has something to do with my voice.

The Max movie Caddo Lake was a unique experience for actor Dylan O'Brien, who stars in the supernatural thriller as Paris. To say any more of that would risk spoiling the film, which combines family drama with some fantastic plot developments. But making the project was nowhere near as complicated, thanks to co-directors and co-writers Celine Held and Logan George.
O'Brien spoke to Cbr about what attracted him to Caddo Lake after he'd already well explored the supernatural genre as Stiles Stilinski in the MTV series Teen Wolf -- but not the revival movie -- and as the star of the Maze Runner movies. The actor discussed why Held and George were instrumental to his experience on Caddo Lake, and what it was like to shoot the brain-bending film. Plus, he talked about the importance of the local community in making the movie come to life.

Caddo Lake writer-directors Celine Held and Logan George are still pinching themselves over M. Night Shyamalan’s faith in their mind-bending second feature.
Years ago, when Shyamalan was actively recruiting cinematographers for the third season of his Apple TV+ series Servant, he took a look at Held and George’s acclaimed short film called Caroline, but instead of just hiring their Dp Lowell A. Meyer, he insisted on employing the entire team. When the married directing duo arrived at Shyamalan’s office to get the lay of the land and watch an early cut of Servant’s season three premiere, the NYU alums were both caught off guard when the Unbreakable filmmaker inquired about their second feature script that was then known as Vanishings.
“[Shyamalan] was like, ‘I’d love to read it.’ So we emailed it to him, thinking that he was just being nice, but he read it that weekend,...

Warning! This article contains Spoilers for Caddo Lake. The Lang family tree in Caddo Lake is almost as confusing as the movie's timeline, but it's also absolutely imperative to the thriller's main twist. As the ending of Caddo Lake made clear, the entire film was about a single family and the journeys of several of its members through time. Unfortunately, the complicated timeline of Caddo Lake makes it hard to determine which characters are connected by blood, and how they all relate to each other. Those family relations are a huge part of Caddo Lake, though, and a reason it secured a score of 80% on Rotten Tomatoes.
There are several main characters in Caddo Lake, and almost all of them are connected by blood or love. That can make it somewhat difficult to keep track of how everyone is related, so to explain all the links, the family tree will...

A new streaming movie called “Caddo Lake” tells an intricate story that intertwines characters across decades using the titular lake’s rumored ability to transport people through time. Directed by Celine Held and Logan George, the film takes place against the backdrop of Caddo Lake, located on the border between Texas and Louisiana.
The movie follows multiple characters from different eras who are all somehow connected to mysterious events on Caddo Lake. In 2022, a young girl named Anna disappears near the lake, setting off the larger plot. The story also traces back to characters from 1952, 1999, 2003, 2005, and the present day of 2022. Piecing together the relationships between these various characters across different time periods presents a narrative challenge for viewers.
Held and George developed the idea for the movie after coming across a striking photo of Caddo Lake online. They spent months living near the actual lake, immersed in its environment as they wrote the script.

Warning! This article contains Spoilers for Caddo Lake. The timeline of Max's Caddo Lake is both extremely confusing and extremely important, so understanding when everything happens is imperative. Throughout the film, the characters of Caddo Lake travel to several different points in time, and the movie doesn't provide much besides context clues to show when they travel to. That can make it difficult to follow all the important developments, including the twist that Caddo Lake shares with a Netflix show, that make the film so engaging. In fact, understanding Caddo Lake's timeline is one of the most important parts of the movie.
As Paris (Dylan O'Brien) learned, time travel in Caddo Lake was only possible when the lake's water levels were low. While that posed quite a few problems in the film, it helps make the timeline easier to sort out. There were five years that Paris, Ellie (Eliza Scanlen...

Warning: Spoilers ahead for Caddo Lake!Caddo Lake has a very intricate and complex timeline centered around the disappearance of Anna (Caroline Falk), but also manages to explain why she always goes missing. After she vanishes in 2022, her older sister, Ellie (Eliza Scanlen), goes looking for her, only to discover one dry part of the titular lake contains a mysterious location that exists between time periods. This location is also discovered by a young man named Paris (Dylan O'Brien) in his time, resulting in the main characters of Caddo Lake traveling to different years in various ways.
While it doesn't make it one of the best time travel movies, Caddo Lake's unique approach to the concept all centers around Anna's disappearance. The consequences of this are revealed throughout the movie, as she's found by Paris in 1952, who hands her to a group of dam workers in that time period. This results in Caddo Lake's twist,...

M. Night Shyamalan is a prolific director and producer known for his plot twists, and the Max original thriller Caddo Lake follows suit. Written and directed by Celine Held and Logan George and produced by Shyamalan, what starts as a tense family drama turns into a time travel thriller when our two protagonists, Paris (Dylan O'Brien) and Ellie (Eliza Scanlen), discover a small portion of the lake that acts as a portal through time, but those passing through have no control over when they end up. While Paris tries to find answers regarding his mother's death, Ellie searches for her missing stepsister Anna (Caroline Falk), and though they never meet, Paris and Ellie's lives overlap in unexpected ways.

It's been a busy year for M. Night Shyamalan. This summer, he dropped the wildly entertaining (and wildly silly) concert-set serial killer thriller "Trap," starring Josh Hartnett and Shyamalan's daughter, Saleka. The "Sixth Sense" director has several other projects in the works, but he's also been branching out as a producer, producing Ishana Shyamalan's "The Watchers" earlier this year and "Caddo Lake," co-directed by Logan George and Celine Held, this month. It's the latter film that's been climbing the streaming charts this week, with the latest viewership data from FlixPatrol listing it as the most-watched movie on HBO, home to the streaming site Max.

There is something quite creepy about getting lost in the woods. The filmmaking duo Celine Held and Logan George add something unique to that trippy and intriguing story. Dylan O'Brien has two new movies connecting with audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, as the actor returns to film in a big way after a brief two-year gap. Although he co-led the 2023 political satire Maximum Truth, the Teen Wolf alum has largely stepped away from major roles since 2022's The Outfit and Not Okay. O'Brien is back doing press tours for two very different films: the mystery thriller Caddo Lake and the comedy Saturday Night, in which he plays Dan Ackroyd and which focuses on the premiere episode of Saturday Night Live.
Both movies are gaining approval on Rotten Tomatoes. Saturday Night, directed by Jason Reitman, has a slight edge with an 87% audience score based on more than 250 ratings. Caddo Lake, which is written and directed by Celine Held and Logan George, with M. Night Shyamalan as one of the producers, is not too far behind with 82% based on more than 250 ratings.

HBO's Sharp Objects is set in the perfectly American small-town of Wind Gap, Missouri, but as a fictional location, the miniseries had to be filmed elsewhere. Based on the novel Sharp Objects by author Gillian Flynn, the 2018 HBO miniseries follows Camille Preaker (Amy Adams), a crime reporter who has recently been discharged from a psychiatric hospital after struggling with alcoholism. To get back on her feet, Camille returns to her quintessentially middle-American hometown of Wind Gap, Missouri to solve a new case.

Despite being flush with color for most of its runtime due to the natural, overgrown landscapes and the sun that filters through the trees surrounding it, “Caddo Lake” is strikingly reminiscent of a certain mid-2000s style of gray genre flick. It’s not just the coloring that lends this thriller to that sort of comparison. The latest film from writer-directors Celine Held and Logan George is a product of a bygone era of filmmaking, for good and bad.

Film criticism has changed a lot over the years. There was a time when critics had no qualms about telling readers the whole plot of a movie, on or before opening weekend, up to and including the finale. The idea was, if you were reading criticism it meant you were interested in reading criticism, and you knew damn well that meant the critic was going to talk about what actually happens in the film. Then again motion pictures as a whole used to be a lot less rarefied. You’d buy a ticket and walk into a theater at any point in the film, stick around for the trailers and news reels and shorts, and then you’d watch another picture, and then maybe hang around to catch the first half of the movie you already saw the end of.

M. Night Shyamalan is far from being a unanimous name within the industry, both on the side of studios that choose whether or not to invest in the filmmaker, and among audiences who find themselves either pleasantly surprised or disappointed by his often divisive films. That said, it’s hard to deny his impact on capturing viewers’ attention, even when he only serves as a producer, as is the case with Caddo Lake, written and directed by the duo Celine Held and Logan George (Topside). With an attractive cast led by Dylan O’Brien (The Maze Runner) and Eliza Scanlen (Little Women), expectations rose even higher with the narrative premise.

M. Night Shyamalan certainly has been busy this year pushing out his signature brand of twisty thrillers. So far in 2024 we have had his daughter’s directorial effort, The Watchers, which he produced; the intriguing modest hit Trap, which stars another daughter and which he directed and produced; and now Caddo Lake, which is being heavily advertised as from “Producer M. Night Shyamalan.” Set for a streaming debut on Max starting Thursday rather than going theatrical like the rest of his feature output, the pic unmistakably fits right into his own filmography, even if he turned over writing and directing reins to the team of Celine Held and Logan George.
Actually this one went into production exactly three years ago under the title The Vanishing at Caddo Lake — while Shyamalan still was working his now-wrapped Apple TV+ series Servant, which happens to be a key credit for his filmmakers here...
