Lille, France — Lili Reinhart scored best actress for “Hal & Harper” at France’s Series Mania, Europe’s biggest TV festival, as its attendance figures went through the roof.
Meanwhile, Spain’s Movistar Plus+ scored a historic double, winning the top Grand Prize in main competition for Alauda Ruiz de Azua’s “Querer” and best series for Diego San José’s “Celeste,” co-produced with The Mediapro Studio, in the fest’s major sidebar.
Further top honors in main competition recognised a second series from a major female talent, Quebec’s Florence Longpré whose “Empathy” won Series Mania’s prestigious Audience Award.
Presided by Pamela Adlon, the main competition jury recognized most of the competition favourites also prizing veteran Israeli writers Moshe Zonder and Ronit Weiss Berkowitz for the screenplay of “The German” and Luca Marinelli for his tearaway performance as Benito Mussolini Joe Wright’s “M: Son Of The Century.

Closing a remarkable circle, TF1 espionage thriller “State of Alert,” starring legendary French singer-actor Patrick Bruel in his first major TV work, will world premiere March 27 at Series Mania.
The red carpet affair, featuring other cast and crew, will take place at the very same festival where Keshet Intl. head of drama Atar Dekel, having put through initial development, pitched the series as an Israeli project way back in 2018.
A fast-paced thriller set between Paris and the spectacular white-sand Negev Desert in Southern Israel, “State of Alert” kicks off with a taxi 43 kilometres outside Paris. Anatoly, a Russian journalist, is called on his cell-phone. When he answers, the taxi stops, on a railway crossing. The taxi doors lock, as a train thunders towards the car.
The assassination almost certainly involved software developed by Israeli intelligence services which can send a virus through a cell-phone call to take control of a car.

Renowned French actor and singer Patrick Bruel is making his TV debut in a leading role as a revered secret agent in “State of Alert,” a geopolitical thriller set in Paris.
The thriller, based on Dov Alfon’s bestselling novel “A Long Night in Paris” (“Unité 8200”), was produced by Elephant International with Keshet International (“Rough Diamonds”).
Slated to premiere later this year on TF1, “State of Alert” was directed by Dan Sachar, who notably worked as a second unit director on 36 episodes of “Fauda,” and co-directed episodes of “Tehran.”
Striking a similar chord as Netflix’s “Zero Day” with its timely techno plot and geo-political themes, “State of Alert” sees Bruel playing Israeli spy Zeey Abadi who travels to Paris for a tech summit where he embarks on an unexpected investigation to connect the dots between stolen software, the death of a Russian journalist and a mysterious disappearance three days...

The past always finds you – even if you’re “The German.”
“In my experience, you can’t ignore the past. You can hide it and lie about it, but it will always haunt you, you know?,” says Ronit Weiss Berkowitz, who co-created Lionsgate’s show with Moshe Zonder – known for “Fauda” – and producer Assaf Gil.
It certainly haunts Uri (Oliver Masucci), a family man and Holocaust survivor recruited by Mossad for a mission in Germany.
“He never wanted to speak about his past. He thought all we have to do is look forward to the future and forget what we have gone through,” adds Weiss Berkowitz, also behind Netflix’s “The Girl from Oslo”. Her parents – just like Zonder’s – were survivors as well.
“As a child, I had a father who was silent. He would never talk about it – my mother never stopped.” Zonder’s mother “never spoke about it at home.

Like the first season, the second season of Tanaav is a beast of its own. Authentic in look and speech, Tanaav doesn’t look like an adaptation, of the Israeli series Fauda. The terror contexts are smartly changed and localized. The characters do not waste time in allowing us to get to know them. Their jobs are well-planned from before.
In these final episodes of Season 2 Tanaav constantly feels tenable and credible. The action is never compromised on. The interaction between the Indian officers and the terrorists draws out that disturbing element of moral ambiguity—who is right and who is wrong—which navigates the plot through choppy waters.
There is a refreshing thehrao (calmness) in the plot, even in its most exacerbated moments. Among the actors, Maanav Vij continues to be sullen and angry at everyone from himself to his father(Kabir Bedi, a little off-key). Vij manifests the...

In mid-October, “Fauda” producer Liat Benasuly fired off an email to a group of nearly 100 people who had recently converged at former Paramount chief Sherry Lansing’s Los Angeles home. Attendees included “The Big Bang Theory” star Mayim Bialik and singer Montana Tucker, and the topic at hand was one rarely discussed outside of similar informal gatherings — that Israeli content creators are increasingly becoming pariahs in the global marketplace. As a result, the next hit series like “Fauda,” “Homeland” or “Euphoria” could die on the vine. In the email, Benasuly issued a dire warning and solicited donations for a newly formed 501(c)(3) dubbed Friends of Israeli Film & TV Producers Association.

Candle Media, the fledging media company backed by private equity player Blackstone, is undergoing a restructure in order to cut costs.
Founded in 2021 by former Disney executives Kevin Mayer and Tom Staggs, the venture made several splashy acquisitions – including Reese Witherspoon’s production label Hello Sunshine – at the offset. Flash forward three years, and free-spending content buyers have cratered back to earth (along with their individual stock prices).
Variety has confirmed that Mayer and Staggs have moved to consolidate their production businesses into two verticals: live-action production will now fall under Sarah Harden, CEO of Hello Sunshine, who will also retain her title at Witherspoon’s shop; and animation will now exist solely within Candle’s profitable MoonBug, the label behind family juggernaut “CocoMelon,” which airs on Netflix.
Details of cost cuts and potential job losses were not immediately clear. Mayer and Staggs first disclosed the new structure at a Semafor event last week.

Exclusive: Tomer Capone has long been a household name on Israeli screens, having worked on a number of successfully exported TV shows such as Hostages, political thriller Fauda and When Heroes Fly. He won an Ophir (equivalent to an Oscar in Israel) after he was handpicked by Natalie Portman for the romantic lead in her directorial debut A Tale of Love and Darkness. But when he was cast as series regular Frenchie (or Serge) in Amazon’s hit series The Boys, he was catapulted into the mainstream. His depiction of Frenchie, a former assassin with a murky past who is mired by deep childhood trauma, and the character’s heartfelt relationship with Kimiko (played by Karen Fukuhara) has offered audiences moments of respite from the superhero satire’s often dark, violent and lewd storyline.

Pay deals in the U.S. and the streamer reset’s impact on international TV development were among the topics at the opening panel of the Berlinale Series Market this morning in Europe.
During the panel at the EFM event, Gersh partner Roy Ashton described that while production costs have gone up significantly over recent years, writer pay had not kept up with the inflation. He suggested indie producers, writers and agents should collaborate more to ensure packages lead to better financial deals when they approach streamers or studios.
Ashton noted that the model behind Netflix’s hit action series The Night Agent, which has been viewed tens of millions of times on the service, meant its writing team did not receive more than originals shows launched at the same time that performed far worse. Creator Shawn Ryan last year gave an interview in which he said anyone assuming he...

On Sunday, January 21, in Park City, nonprofit organization Jew in the City is hosting a panel discussion at Sundance that aims to debunk what it says are tropes about Jewish people and Israel in the media. Just across town, shortly after that panel begins, a group of protestors will gather to show their solidarity for Palestinians.
The panel discussion kicks off at 11:30 a.m. Mt at The Box at The Ray Theatre; the protest begins around noon in front of the Filmmaker Lodge on Main Street. Both sides say the timing is a coincidence, but after more than 100 days of conflict in Gaza after Hamas’ October 7 attack on Israel, the two events represent a microcosm of the debate and political fervor that has defined Israel and Palestine for a millennia.

Like the rest of the world, Hollywood is rattled and on high alert following the Oct. 7 Hamas attack that killed at least 1,400 people and saw the abduction of hundreds of hostages into Gaza. In its wake, attention has turned to beefing up security among Hollywood’s Jewish community.
“We’ve had a sharp increase in requests from our Jewish clients,” says Kenneth Bombace of Global Threat Solutions, which services billionaires, stars and Fortune 500 corporations. “They’re afraid they could be a target.”
The crisis comes amid a backdrop of already heightened antisemitism — both worldwide and within L.A. The Anti-Defamation League released a study in March that found recorded incidents of anti-Jewish hate in L.A. had increased 30 percent in 2022 over the previous year. (In total, there were 237 such incidents in the L.A. area, including 143 of harassment; 86 of vandalism of businesses, synagogues and schools; and eight incidents of assault.

The statement, which can be read in full below, blasts the WGA for failing to “find in their hearts enough courage to speak out against a terrorist organization that is currently holding 200 hostages, some of them toddlers and babies, snatched from their cribs as their mothers were raped in the same room in front of their eyes.”

The co-creator of the popular Netflix show Fauda, which depicts the conflicts and challenges of a fictional elite Israeli special forces unit, once had an idea for a storyline in which hundreds of Hamas terrorists infiltrate Israel and overwhelm a village. But, as Avi Issacharoff told a reporter, he decided not to go with it because “it sounds crazy” and wouldn’t be realistic.
If only that were true.
On Oct. 7, what was seen as “crazy” to some of world’s most creative screenwriters came to life in 22 kibbutzim and villages across southern Israel. Hamas terrorists infiltrated by air, sea, and land with one intent: To kill as many Jews as possible. By the time they were driven out, more than 1,400 people were dead — 1,200 of them civilians, and 30 of them Americans. Nearly 200 people, including babies, the elderly and the disabled were kidnapped and taken to Gaza, a war crime and a moral travesty.

Jimmy Kimmel thinks Donald Trump’s recent comments about Israel may make him eligible for an international award, though not any award the former president would want.
“He’s really angling for that Nobel Piece of S–t Prize,” the late night host said Thursday night.
Kimmel started his opening monologue by saying that Trump “addressed the horrific attack on Israel by attacking Israel.” In his speech, the former President said Hamas wouldn’t have attacked Israel if his own election wasn’t “rigged” — a lie he’s repeated since he lost to Joe Biden — to calling Israel’s Defense Minister Yoav Gallant a “jerk.” He also complained about Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and had some complimentary words about Israel’s enemies in Lebanon.

Israel-Hamas Conflict
Shock and horror: It’s hard to know where to begin with the tragedy unfolding in the Middle East. Thousands have died since a Hamas-led militia crossed the Gaza Strip border and began attacking Israeli villages and kibbutzes. There’s no end to the conflict in sight, with Israel now blockading Gaza and ordering Gaza City residents to evacuate, while there is growing international concern about the safety of Palestinian citizens who will soon be devoid of food, water and fuel. The history of the conflict runs deep and this isn’t the forum to discuss it, beyond believing that violence cannot be the answer. Like the rest of the world,...

The co-creators of Fauda and Tehran have detailed how they are helping relief efforts as Ted Sarandos paid tribute to Lior Waitzman, a sound technician on Netflix’s first Hebrew-language original series, who was killed on Saturday during the Hamas-led attack on Israel.
“A lot of folks are still reeling from this horrific terrorist attack from Hamas,” said Netflix co-ceo Sarandos at the top of an on-stage talk with Bloomberg. “Many of us have probably lost friends and family. At Netflix, one of the victims, Lior Waitzman, was working on our first Netflix original series there, called Bros.”
On Saturday morning, an unsuspecting Waitzman went out cycling, before the attack began. A short while later he texted his wife to say there had been a shooting. “That is the last we heard from him, as he was a victim of that terrorist attack,” said Sarandos.

The cast and filmmakers behind Netflix’s Israeli series “Fauda” are speaking out and taking action amid the Hamas attacks in Israel.
Actor Lior Raz, who also produces the series, is a former Israeli special forces unit soldier. Following this past weekend’s attacks on Israeli by the Iran-backed terrorist group, Raz traveled with “Fauda” co-creator Avi Issacharov and Israeli Democracy Institute head Yohanan Plesner, to join the fight against Hamas with his fellow members of the group Brothers in Arms, who had previously protested against efforts by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to overhaul the country’s judiciary.
He later posted a video, writing, “I headed down south to join hundreds of brave ‘Brothers in Arms’ volunteers who worked tirelessly to assist the population in the south of Israel. We were sent to the bombarded town of Sderot to extract two families. No fear!” Sderot is just a few miles...

Ted Sarandos, the co-ceo of Netflix, has confirmed that Lior Waitzman, a sound editor who worked on Netflix’s “Fauda” and Apple TV+’s “Tehran,” was killed in Hamas’ terrorist attacks on Israel this week.
Sarandos noted while speaking at the Bloomberg Screentime conference Thursday that many people in the room had likely lost “friends and family or friends of family” in the attack over the weekend.
“One of the victims of this terrorist attack, Lior Waitzman, was working on our first Netflix original series there called ‘Bros.’ He worked in the sound department,” Sarandos said. “On Saturday morning, he went out biking, stopped and texted his wife that there’s been a shooting and that was the last she heard from him. Because he was a victim of that terrorist attack.”
The Netflix head also referred to what happened as a “horrific terrorist attack by Hamas” and added, “We...

Following the Hamas terrorist attacks Saturday directed at Israeli civilians, the country’s film and television industry has shut down production and closed movie theaters.
Work has ceased on in-progress projects shooting in Israel. The closure of theaters came as the Israel Defense Forces’ Home Front Command mandated that the industry shift to aid and on TV exclusively air news coverage of the ongoing crisis.
“The entire industry is shut down,” Israeli Producers Association chairman Adar Shafran told Screen Daily. The director and producer stated: “We are still in shock. Nothing will be the same after this war, but for now, we’re just concentrating on survival.”
Israel officially declared war on Hamas on Sunday. Meanwhile, the ongoing violence has resulted in more than 1,000 dead in Israel and – according to the BBC – 800 dead in the Palestinian territory of Gaza from Israeli reprisals.
Local filmmakers and related crews are working together to help soldiers and civilians.
