Persian helmers Ali Asgari and Alireza Khatami have teamed again to make a movie about what they call “one step forward”. Built in the form of 12 short, completely separated stories that bare the names of their main protagonists, “Terrestrial Verses” shows different situations of oppression, some of them completely absurd and some uncomfortable, with most of them handled with a great dose of deadpan humor.

At the international premiere of their movie in the Uncertain Regard competition program of the festival, Alireza Kathami addressed the packed Debussy theatre with words about the current situation in Iran.

He also happens to lead the way in our current odds for Song of the Year (also for “Blinding Lights”) and also Album of the Year (“After Hours”).

He’s followed by another chart-topper, Post Malone‘s “Circles” with 19/2 odds.

Prior to the pandemic, London and Los Angeles headquartered production house Pulse Films was experiencing something of a golden period. Founded by Thomas Benski and Marisa Clifford in 2005, the company had three divisions firing on all cylinders: non-fiction had seen success with Netflix docs The Disappearance Of Madeleine McCann and Bikram: Yogi, Guru Predator; scripted took its latest feature, the Riz Ahmed starring Mogul Mowgli, to the Berlinale, and announced pics including the Nicolas Cage-starring Pig and the Olivia Wilde-directed Perfect; and commercials had locked numerous big commissions including with Apple and the coveted Christmas campaign for UK supermarket Sainsbury’s.

When we chat back in February about the company’s future, Benski is understandably in a bullish mood. “I would argue that we’ve built the modern day studio,” he proclaims confidently. “We really feel like this is our time, I don’t mean it in an arrogant way.

A sense of dread permeates every frame of Disappearance at Clifton Hill, a noir type tale that evokes an hypnotic mood from start to finish. Now, this isn’t your traditional film noir, trafficking in cliches and men gritting their teeth. No, this has a female centric true north, making the investigator/protagonist a woman, and it pays dividends. Whenever you can upend a genre, even in a small way, it matters. Plus, when you have a high quality lead performance to latch on to, that helps as well. Hitting theaters this weekend, the movie is an independent effort that has large ambitions. Neo-noir is a difficult genre to tackle for many filmmakers. Although, when the job is done well, these stylistic thrillers can be immensely interesting and fun to watch. Director Albert Shin hopes audiences feel that way about his new film, “Disappearance at Clifton Hill.”

Walter, the character played by David Cronenberg in Albert Shin’s new horror-thriller Disappearance at Clifton Hill, gets an introduction befitting the film-maker’s legendary stature. He emerges from a small-town river where he’s been trawling for sunken treasures in scuba gear, lumbering out of the water like a less intimidating cousin of the Creature from the Black Lagoon. As a local-lore podcaster and avid conspiracy theorist, Walter feels perfectly comfortable with such an air of the weird about him, and audiences familiar with Cronenberg’s extensive work in the stranger corners of cult cinema probably presume that he does, too. But in the moment, as per usual, he was just thinking about his body.

Decades after witnessing a disturbing abduction among the trees of Niagara Falls, a woman discovers that there are still troubling things afoot in her hometown in Disappearance at Clifton Hill. Following its well-received run on the festival circuit, Disappearance at Clifton Hill is coming to theaters and VOD on February 28th from IFC Midnight, and ahead of its release, we caught up with director/co-writer Albert Shin in our latest Q&a feature to discuss the film's real-life roots, filming in Niagara Falls, and working with the legendary David Cronenberg, who plays Walter in the movie.

Thanks for taking the time to catch up with us, and congratulations on Disappearance at Clifton Hill! I understand that this movie has real-life roots for you. How and when did you get the idea for this film?

Albert Shin: Thanks, excited to chat with Daily Dead! Not to spoil anything, but the prologue...

Billie Eilish swept the top categories at the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards as she and brother/recording partner Finneas O’Connell took home six out of the seven awards they were nominated for. Grammy Awards winners will be revealed on Sunday, January 26 in a two-part ceremony at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. The majority of the awards in the 84 categories spread across 30 fields will be handed out in a non-televised event, the Premiere Ceremony, that afternoon. Distribution slate kicks off with Mine 9; Disappearance is first sales title.

In the run-up to Afm, former Archstone Distribution president Brady Bowen has launched Los Angeles-based distributor and sales company 123 Go Films, which will focus on sci-fi, action and horror, and target 15 to 20 releases a year.

123 Go Films’ first film in the North American distribution pipeline is Mine 9, a thriller about coal miners trapped underground with only one hour’s oxygen supply after a methane explosion. June 18th is shaping up to be a killer day for genre fans, as two of my favorite movies of 2019 are making their way home: Jordan Peele’s Us and Lords of Chaos (on DVD) from Jonas Åkerlund. Kino Lorber is showing Chan-wook Park some love this week with their Blu-ray release of Thirst, and Scream Factory has put together the impressive-looking Universal Horror Collection: Volume 1 set as well.

Other home entertainment releases for this Tuesday include Under the Silver Lake, The Monolith Monsters, Crypto, The Nightmare Gallery, Derangement, and Disappearance.

Lords of Chaos

The story of True Norwegian Black Metal and its most notorious practitioners: a group of young men with a flair for publicity, church-burning and murder: Mayhem. Oslo, 1987. Seventeen-year-old Euronymous is determined to escape his idyllic Scandinavian hometown and create "true Norwegian black metal" with his band, Mayhem. He's joined by equally fanatical youths - Dead and Varg.

Perhaps the best, and certainly the most weirdly-grooving of the four tracks Vampire Weekend have trickled out in advance of their forthcoming Father Of The Bride LP, “Sunflower” opens up with a swirl of tag-teaming guitar and bass runs, which are soon mirrored by wordless vocals. Internet guitarist-vocalist Steve Lacy helps out, as Ezra Koenig sings abstractedly about a garden that somehow recalls the one St. Stephen trafficked in that Grateful Dead song, with a gear shift into sunny soul-pop on the chorus, which involves a “strange thought upon the pillow.

We have three big things that might excite any Vampire Weekend fans in the house. First, the band just dropped the music video for their latest single, "Sunflower," with The Internet guitarist Steve Lacy. Second, Jonah Hill directed said music video. Third, Jerry Seinfeld stars in it. Oh, and the video also features a copious amount of footage from iconic Upper West Side locations like Zabar's and Barney Greengrass. So, I guess that's four things to be excited about. My bad.

If you're hoping for any You've Got Mail flashbacks, then I suggest looking elsewhere, because the Mid90s director has the camera spinning constantly throughout the two-and-a-half-minute clip, creating a dizzying split-screen effect that only serves to highlight Seinfeld's trademark smirk. The band Vampire Weekend enlisted Jonah Hill to direct a new music video for the song “Sunflower.”

The clip shows frontman Ezra Koenig at iconic locations on New York’s Upper West Side, including Zabar’s grocery store and Barney Greengrass. Part of Hill’s signature indie style, the camera twists, turns and splits into multiple perspectives. Comedian Jerry Seinfeld, whose “Seinfeld” character made the same Manhattan neighborhood his playground in the NBC series, cameos throughout the video, in addition to artist Fab 5 Freddy.

Fresh off his directorial debut for 2018’s coming-of-age film “Mid90s,” Hill had previously appeared in Vampire Weekend’s “Harmony Hall” earlier this year. This is the second music video he has directed, adding to Danny Brown’s 2017 track “Ain’t It Funny,” which had a similar experimental and indie feel.

Vampire Weekend are a New York band. They famously formed while studying at Columbia University, they named one of the best songs on their 2008 debut after a crosstown bus line and their lyrics are filled with references to life in and around Manhattan. Vampire Weekend’s newest album “Father of the Bride” is still a few weeks away from its late-April release, but another one of its 18 tracks now has a new music video, courtesy of Academy Award-nominated person and international poster interpreter Jonah Hill. “Sunflower” follows lead singer, songwriter, and Charles the Mecha Butler creator Ezra Koenig through various famous New York locales, including Zabar’s and Barney Greengrass. It’s another chance for Koenig to dabble in amateur food prep, having previously whipped up some breakfast in the band’s recent video for “Harmony Hall,” directed by veteran music video director Emmett Malloy.
