Horror movies have always used ghosts, vampires, zombies, and the most grotesque monsters that can be imagined by the human mind to talk about something that’s personal to the storyteller or a bigger societal issue. Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror was about immigration. Invasion of the Body Snatchers (the ‘56 one) was about fascism. The Exorcist was about religion. Heck, even Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday was about family ties. That said, while there was some semblance of balance between the themes and the gore, with budding filmmakers spending their limited budgets on the latter to at least give the people some cheap thrills, the rising popularity of what’s called “elevated horror” has shifted the scales. Now you have low-budget horror flicks using their money on “bettering” their social commentary instead of spending it on sticky special effects and gnarly visual effects. Of course, you have exceptions like Terrifier,...

Horror movies often find themselves judged by how well they can maintain suspense, deliver jump scares and make the audience's skin crawl. While some classics like Psycho and The Exorcistachieve this and become box office hits, many horror films that are equally flawless from start to finish often slip under the radar. These underrated gems offer everything a horror fan could want — strong performances, creepy and well-crafted lore, and terrifying scares — but for one reason or another, they haven't garnered the widespread recognition they deserve.
These films might have been overshadowed by more mainstream releases, suffered from limited marketing, or were simply ahead of their time. Each one delivers a masterclass in horror filmmaking, maintaining tension and engagement without a single misstep. Some have gone on to become justified cult classics, while others are hidden gems in need of discovery. They run the gamut of horror's history and make terrific...

Neon-disturbed latest indie-horror flick, “Longlegs,” recently became one of the biggest surprise hits this summer. An occult thriller that opened with mostly wide critical acclaim, the movie has slowly gone on to win audiences, as the global box office collection now stands at a stellar $47.3 million. What’s even more impressive is that it became the highest-grossing regional debut ever for the distributor house, marking 2024 as one of the best years for horror genre fans.
But that’s not to say that the Nicolas Cage starrer serves strictly as a genre film. In fact, the discourse regarding “Longlegs” has been pretty varied. While part of the audience has hailed it for evoking an unspoken existential terror manifested through its carnivalesque frights, others have admired the film as a mood-setting procedural thriller. Some are even calling it a long-awaited giant step in serial killer cinema. That’s probably why it’s...

This article contains some spoilers for "Heart Eyes."
The filmmaking team behind the new Valentine's Day-set slasher movie "Heart Eyes" seems to be rallying around their film with a particular spin on the "see it in theaters!" agenda. Namely, that new horror movie icons cannot be born if no one goes to see them when they're brand new. While this is unimpeachably true, it feels important to point out at least one of the reasons why horror fans — traditionally a very loyal and easy-to-please group — have not shown up for one of the several attempts at creating a new horror icon over the last decade and change. While some have not been given a fair shake at all, others have either had a pretty lackluster start, been too singular to franchise (I don't think we'll be seeing "Skinamarink V: The Skinamarinking" anytime soon), arrived too late (the eventual "Thanksgiving" movie...

There’s an ongoing debate about whether or not so-called “cult classics” can exist in the streaming era. In a world where nearly every film ever made is available to watch at the click of a button, and where niche online communities can unite fans of even the most obscure international releases, how can we say that an easily accessible modern feature is part of the same underground movement as something like The Rocky Horror Picture Show when it’s just as easily viewed as the latest Avengers flick?
However, what many critics fail to realize is that this overwhelming availability of niche films is also responsible for burying potential hits underneath an ever-growing sea of similar releases. That’s why, at least to me, a modern cult classic isn’t necessarily a movie that cultivates a passionate fan-base through alternative means of distribution, but rather an easily accessible gem...

The horror genre is known for its scares and tension, but many incredible horror movies are more atmospheric than they are inherently scary. In fact, some of the best horror movies of all time are known for their terrifying environments. While these horror movies do not suffer in any way by having such engaging environments, there are several in which the fear factor of the setting stands out against the story.
This is incredibly common in horror films with the most wild premises, but it includes more horror than just the most incredulous. In fact, this extends to films in all sorts of genres, including different obscure horror genres. Regardless, the environments built up in horror films like The Ritual and Rosemary's Baby are legendary, even more frightening than the actual films themselves.

Marin Ireland has long been a powerhouse of talent since her first onscreen role in 2003, and is best known for her roles in TV shows like Sneaky Pete (2015-2019) and The Umbrella Academy (2019-2024), movies like Eileen (2023) and Piercing (2018), and was nominated for a Tony Award for her role in the play Reasons to be Pretty. But since 2020, she’s carved out a compelling niche in contemporary indie horror. With standout performances in films like The Dark and the Wicked (2020), The Empty Man (2020), Birth/Rebirth (2023), The Boogeyman (2023), and Somewhere Quiet (2023), Ireland has become a defining presence in the genre. While her acting style is often more in-tune with stage acting, she’s able to brilliantly utilize it for the big screen to enhance her performances and emotional impact.

David Prior’s debut feature, The Empty Man (2020), stands out as a unique entry in the realm of ‘summoning’ horror stories, thanks to its distinct narrative style and haunting background score. The film follows James Lasombra, a former police officer, as he investigates the disappearance of a teenage girl named Amanda. As James delves deeper, he uncovers a trail of dead teenagers and ominous messages referencing the “Empty Man.”
Determined to uncover the origins of this mysterious entity, James stumbles upon a sinister cult and learns of terrifying events from the past. His own tragic history—losing his wife and son in a car accident—further complicates his journey. But how does the cult know about his personal trauma? Is James being watched? Can he put an end to the terror of the Empty Man? Let’s unravel these questions through the story.

The 2020 horror may have a hard-to-decipher twist ending, but with The Empty Man explained the deeper layers of its ambiguous finale, vague plot, and the real Tulpa meaning all become clear. The Empty Man was originally shot in 2017 but shelved for a few years when distributor 20th Century Studios was worried the adaptation of Cullen Bunn's 2014 graphic novel would potentially confuse audiences. Sure enough, when The Empty Man did arrive in October 2020 most reviewers dismissed the intriguing psychological horror as a convoluted yet paradoxically over-familiar facsimile of The Bye Bye Man, Slender Man, and numerous (supposedly) similar genre efforts.
However, The Empty Man became a cult hit, especially when it arrived on Hulu. In David Prior's subversive horror movie, a group of friends goes hiking, whereupon one of them stumbles (quite literally) across a bizarre, misshapen skeleton in a cave. Soon after, all the groups members kill one...

Even if you’re not a Halloween person, October means spooky season. It feels like every brand, store, — and yes, every streamer, finds ways to incorporate themes of haunting and horror. Disney+ started early, with the September premiere of “Agatha All Along,” which will air new episodes for the next several weeks. In October, the streamer will debut “Wizards Beyond Waverly Place,” an expansion of the popular Disney Channel series “Wizards of Waverly Place” which aired from 2007 to 2012.
And of course Hulu has “Huluween,” a celebration of the scariest titles either premiering on the streamer for the first time or simply highlighted from its existing library. That includes films like “Late Night with the Devil,” the series “Reginald the Vampire,” FX’s “American Horror Stories”, a Halloween specials from “Family Guy” and “Solar Opposites,” a docuseries on witch hunting, and much more.

The following contains spoilers for Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, now playing in theaters.
One of the most intriguing aspects of the Planet of the Apes reboot is how these movies usually have sprawling casts. The first trilogy with Caesar (Andy Serkis) had a revolving door, with many humans, such as James Franco's Will Rodman, Freida Pinto's Caroline, and Jason Clarke's Malcolm, all playing integral roles.
There was also a vast array of ape allies such as Maurice, ape enemies like Koba, and human tyrants like Woody Harrelson's Colonel. With a new era dawning, Wes Ball's Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes follows suit, stitching together a massive cast of characters. In the process, an even more sprawling narrative has been set up for the future.

“The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” is back for Season 2, and this time around there are a number of new characters to keep straight. With Sauron revealed to be Halbrand at the end of Season 1, the chess pieces are now fully in the open and the Dark Lord is masquerading as yet another new character this season in order to try and forge the titular rings. We’ve also got drama with the dwarves, in-fighting amongst the elves and that guy who most definitely is Gandalf is wandering the desert with a harfoot.
Absent in Season 2 is Nazanin Boniadi who played Bronwyn, who exited the show. But new to the cast are Ciaran Hinds, Rory Kinnear and plenty more filling out this prequel series that tackles J.R.R. Tolkien’s Second Age. Check out our complete “Rings of Power” Season 2 cast and character guide below.

In a world… in which movies are just as much products as they are art, studios need to sell the latest releases to the broadest possible audiences. That means that they not only need to craft trailers promoting the films, but they need to misrepresent what films are really about.
On a certain level, that tendency toward misrepresentation makes sense. Trailers only have a couple of minutes to get people interested in the film, and complex works of art don’t lend themselves to such simplicities.
That said, it’s hard to see a masterpiece reduced to just a few sizzle moments, trying their best to ensure that the audience won’t be surprised or challenged by what they’re about to see. Here are some of the worst offenders in cinema history, movies that ended up to be so much more than what these teasers promised.

For over a hundred years, horror movies have been digging into the anxieties and fears of their audiences with monsters that have evolved as the genre has. Among many famous horror films, an opening sequence can introduce the central monster and set up the tone that will follow. There is a fast and furious escalation in Scream. A slower, atmospheric start is seen in The Exorcist. While its hard to craft a new horror movie opening that will become unforgettable, its not impossible. Director David Prior did it with his directorial debut, The Empty Man.

What are the chances that two films called The Piper, both horror films involving the legend of The Pied Piper, would come out in the same year? And that both would be hard to see? While I haven’t seen the one starring Liz Hurley yet, I did get a chance to see this one – written and directed by Erlingur Thoroddsen and featuring the late Julian Sands in one of his last roles.
It opens with the voice of Gustafson (Sands) on the phone trying to talk Katherine out of destroying the last copy of her Concerto for Children. She tells him “It is evil, no one must ever know about it” before rushing outside to try and burn it in her fire pit. But something with glowing eyes intervenes, and she burns while the manuscript survives.

One of the most underrated movies of the 1990’s, “The Faculty” was an attempt by Dimension to replicate the success of “Scream,” which they had released two years earlier and had become a sensation.

Lovecraft may have argued that the strongest kind of fear is the fear of the unknown, but there’s no denying the intellectual thrills of unraveling a good old-fashioned mystery. After all, some answers can serve to make a story even scarier, and I have a personal soft spot for horror yarns about grizzled investigators attempting to piece together a morbid puzzle.
This is precisely why I’ve been a fan of the Saw franchise from the very beginning, with the detective angle behind all the blood and guts making this gruesome franchise stand out amongst other so-called “torture-porn” movies.
And with the long-anticipated Saw X on the horizon this week, we’ve decided to come up with a list recommending six of the best investigative horror films ahead of Jigsaw’s latest killing spree. After all, sometimes it’s fun to figure out exactly why our protagonists are going...

Oni Press is proud to announce Invasive #1 (of 4) – a terrifying new experiment in pain from Eisner Award nominee Cullen Bunn (The Sixth Gun, Basilisk) and acclaimed illustrator Jesús Hervás (The Empty Man), beginning in December 2023!
"Invasive might very well go down as Cullen Bunn's ultimate statement on what the horror comic can and should be. As both a mystery and meditation on the addictive nature of power, Invasive is one of the most compelling, thought-provoking, and genuinely rattling projects that I have ever had the privilege to shepherd forward,” said Oni Press President & Publisher Hunter Gorinson.

The elements of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein are so timeless and malleable that they've inspired two artistically successful yet very different variations this year. A couple of months after the release of Bomani J. Story's The Angry Black Girl and Her Monster comes director and co-writer Laura Moss' Birth/Rebirth, an even more rewarding take on Shelley's tale of scientific hubris. It's a twisted story about motherhood, with two seemingly opposite protagonists who are both invested in the resurrection of a little girl. Marin Ireland and Judy Reyes complement each other perfectly as women whose single-minded devotion to their daring experiment has devastating consequences.
Birth/Rebirth introduces the two characters in an effective sequence that cross-cuts between the two to show their divergent personalities and interests. Both work in the same Bronx hospital, but pathologist Rose (Ireland) toils mostly alone in the morgue, dispassionately cutting into cadavers and sneaking organs...

In an underground hospital secretly operating deep beneath the streets of a major metropolis, a radical new addiction has taken hold.
Once inside its grip, there are no rules, no oaths, and no taboos too deep to not to be broken.
The scalpel is their tool, and the alleys are their operating theater...and, together, a new class of surgeon is bent on piercing the final threshold of accepted medical orthodoxy one incision at a time.

Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein (or, Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus for purists) has been retold countless times in the 100+ years since its original publication, with many creators sticking to the tried and true formula and a select few opting instead to give the story a new spin. That’s just what screenwriters Laura Moss and Brendan J. O’Brien aim to do in birth/rebirth, a look at the lives of two women in the medical field who come together to defy death after one of them endures an unspeakable tragedy.
After the sudden death of her 6-year-old daughter Lila (A.J. Lister), maternity nurse Celie is overcome with grief until she crosses paths with pathologist Rose (Marin Ireland), a cold, calculated woman who is far more interested in the corpses she examines than the living people in her life. After discovering a secret Rose keeps in her apartment, the two women...

Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities — a marvelous compendium of streaming deadtime stories — emphasizes everything that lures me to horror anthologies. It feels like a reinvention of Showtime’s Masters of Horror, highlighting everything I appreciate about the format. One might balk at calling Cabinet of Curiosities an outright horror anthology, more a miniseries? Still, the decadently morbid and dazzlingly darkened atmosphere under del Toro’s oversight draws rich atmospheric throughlines. Del Toro’s program calls to mind grim grab bags like A Christmas Horror Story, the V/H/S series, Southbound, and all the subgenre classics fans already laud.
If you think horror anthologies are just scattered collections of short-form storytelling and that’s all, consider yourself open to reeducation. Horror anthologies are often maligned because — like other subgenres such as found footage — horror anthologies can become fallback “easy to make” titles. Individual scripts only need to stretch minutes versus hours,...

At this point, saying that 2022 has been a good year for TV would be like saying water is wet. There's more TV than ever before, which means that if you thought it was anything but a great year for the medium, you simply haven't been watching enough of the good stuff. We're not blaming you, as the total saturation of the format also means it's tougher than ever to decide what to watch. Luckily, we've got you covered with a countdown of the year's best episodes, a list that includes comedies, dramas, fantasies, horror shows, and everything in between.
While some of the year's best shows -- like "Abbott Elementary," "Hacks," or "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" -- aren't represented here, it's simply because their episodes were too uniformly great to choose just one. But the shows that did make the cut each find a way to transport, inspire awe,...

The Menu has delighted fans of the horror genre with its twisted take on the idea that a small obsession can turn into murderous intent. There are other movies that offer different spins on the genre, such as the cognitohazard movies, which focus on disasters and dangers happening when characters’ five senses are exposed.
These range from stories where hearing can cause a person’s death, like Pontypool, to films where seeing an entity is a setup for a demise, such as Bird Box. The cognitohazard aspect of things creates a tense environment, which is perfect for horror fans who will find this as a unique avenue for entertainment.

Ready to “Smile?”
Paramount’s new original horror movie, about a “Ring”-style curse that passes from one person to another and involves horribly violent deaths and – surprise! – a big wide grin on your face, is here, and it’s a huge hit. “Smile,” which stars Sosie Bacon and Kyle Gallner, is super creepy and unsettling and grossed over 200 million at the box office.
But how do you watch the new movie? Read on to find out:
Is “Smile” in theaters or streaming?
“Smile” was released exclusively in movie theaters on Sept. 30, and this is honestly probably a good thing, as its effectiveness is directly related to the amount of teenagers screaming and throwing their popcorn around you. This is a real matinee-at-the-mall movie, in the best possible way. That said, it’ll be streaming very soon…
When will “Smile” be streaming on Paramount+?
“Smile” will be streaming on Paramount+ starting Nov.

Canadian actor and filmmaker Aaron Poole shared the first details of his arthouse father-daughter road movie “Dada” with Variety this week, shortly after wrapping principal photography of the film on Manitoulin Island, located north of Toronto in Lake Huron.
Working steadily in North American TV (“Most Dangerous Game”) and film since the late 1990s, Poole, a classically trained actor, stepped behind the camera for his Toronto-premiering “Oracle” (2020), which was nominated for best narrative short at Slamdance and won the top prize at Montreal’s Festival Du Nouveau Cinéma.
In “Dada,” Poole’s feature directorial debut, James Gilbert and newcomer Ciara Alexys play a divorced father and teenage daughter who drive around the perimeter of a nuclear facility on the eve of the girl’s 16th birthday, playing nonsense games and reading things.

Some bodies are more than meet the eye, as seen in the "The Autopsy" installment of Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities. Based on Michael Shea's short story of the same name, the episode sees a coroner brought in to do the autopsies of several miners who died when one of them set off an explosion with a mysterious object, only to learn of the surprising truth behind him.
F. Murray Abraham and Luke Roberts lead the cast of "The Autopsy", which hails from The Empty Man writer-director David Prior. Primarily set in an isolated location, the episode is a chilling game of mental chess as Abraham's Dr. Carl Winters grapples with the revelation of why the miners died, and how he may be next.

Sinister's macabre story introduced audiences to director Scott Derrickson's otherworldly 'Bughuul' figure, which has since become a famous movie monster, spawning a sequel to the film that was released in 2015. Besides that though, fans of the movie may think that there's not much else out there that can hit the same spot as Sinister, but they just need to know where to look.
The best horror movies like Sinister have one thing in common and that is a merciless focus on terrifying the viewer throughout; creating narratives so engrossing that they can't look away, even if that means that they have to watch through their fingers.
