Needless to say that I had of course never heard about this 2017 Indonesian horror comedy titled "Hantu Gunung Kawi" (aka "The Ghost of Mount Kawi") prior to stumbling upon it by random chance here in 2025. And given my love of Asian cinema and all things horror, of course I needed no persuasion to sit down and check out what writer Erry Sofid and director Nayato Fio Nuala had to offer.
However, I have to say that the movie's script and storyline fell rather short of entertaining me. The script made little sense, and it was just devoid of entertainment value. And I was struggling to keep watching it as it crept on at a slow and pointless pace. Truth be told, I tossed the towel in the ring at 55 minutes into the 95 minute runtime. I was just bored senseless by then, and it was painfully obvious that the movie would not improve and get any better. If someone was to ask me what this movie was about, I can honestly say I don't know, except for it being about young people roaming around in the forest late at night for no apparent reason.
I was not familiar with the cast ensemble in the movie, but the acting performances were fair, despite the fact that the script was rubbish.
Visually then you're not going to find yourself in for any eye candy, should you opt to brave boredom and sit down to watch "Hantu Gunung Kawi".
This is not a movie that I would recommend you to waste 95 minutes on watching. And it most definitely is not a movie that I will ever return to attempt finish watching. I just simply didn't care one bit about the storyline or the flaccid character gallery.
My rating of "Hantu Gunung Kawi" lands on a very generous two out of ten stars.
