A host of British screen stars have joined Charge Films and Deadbeat Films’ upcoming short film “Bury Your Gays.”

From writer/director Charlotte Serena Cooper, the film is billed as a “bold takedown of outdated LGBTQ+ tropes in film and TV mixed with dark comedy that satirises the harmful cinematic tradition of the same name.”

“Bury Your Gays” will be led by Jude Mack and T’Nia Miller. Miller — a long-time advocate for better queer representation on screen — also serves as an executive producer.

The cast also features Sophie Melville (“The Way”), Harry Trevaldwyn (“How to Train Your Dragon”), Blake Harrison (“The Inbetweeners”), Ella-Rae Smith (“Foundation”), Amelia Clarkson (“The Last Kingdom”) and Sule Rimi (“Day of the Jackal”).

The BBC released a trailer for upcoming drama series Miss Austen, with Keeley Hawes (Bodyguard, Line of Duty, It’s A Sin) starring as Jane Austen’s sister Cassandra, on Tuesday and unveiled a Sunday, Feb. 2 launch date.

In the U.S., the series will air on Masterpiece on PBS from Sunday, May 4.

All four episodes will become available on its BBC iPlayer streaming service from 6 a.m. London time that day, and the series will begin airing weekly episodes on BBC One that evening. Adapted from Gill Hornby’s best-selling novel of the same name, the drama is produced by Bonnie Productions for Masterpiece, in association with the BBC.

2024’s been a tough year so holiday favorites Elf, A Christmas Story, and National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation will help take our minds off the world. However, some titles arent as prominent as these. This doesnt mean that these shows are bad, but rather that theyre simply underrated or overshadowed by other projects. Science fiction is a competitive genre, undoubtedly, but some UK shows simply didnt make a big enough splash internationally. Despite executing typically overused sci-fi TV tropes well or having a cast of popular actors, these British shows are relatively unknown and deserve more attention.

Dystopia is one of those sub-genres that lends itself to some interesting philosophical ideas and TV show creators take full advantage of that. In the history of cinema, many great directors and storytellers have created some of the most iconic movies set in dystopian societies like Blade Runner and Total Recall. French animation producer La Cabane Productions and co-producer Thuristar have unveiled key voice casting and writing talent additions to its animated TV special project “A Lamb’s Stew” and released a first teaser that will be screened during a pitch at Cartoon Forum in Toulouse.

Today’s teaser release unveils the casting of British actor T’Nia Miller and introduces 11-year-old newcomer Iris Onyejiuwa in the lead role of Billie. The companies have also recruited Julia Smuts Louw as story editor for the production, which is written and directed by Joeri Christiaen.

Smuts Louw is an accomplished animation writer who recently adapted the International Emmy and Annecy-winning made-for-tv movie “The Smeds and the Smoos” and penned the “Star Wars: Visions” season two episodes “Aau’s Song.”

Apple TV+ has ordered a series adaptation of Mick Herron’s “Down Cemetery Road” with Emma Thompson and Ruth Wilson attached to star, Variety has learned.

This is now the second adaptation of Herron’s books to get the series treatment at Apple, with the other being the popular spy series “Slow Horses” starring Gary Oldman. Morwenna Banks, who is a writer on “Slow Horses,” will serve as lead writer on “Down Cemetery Road.”

The official logline of the new series states, “When a house explodes in a quiet Oxford suburb and a girl disappears in the aftermath, neighbor Sarah Tucker (Wilson) becomes obsessed with finding her and enlists the help of private investigator Zoë Boehm (Thompson). Fool Me Once is the story of military helicopter pilot Maya Stern, a captain who loses her career in a scandal and suffers two bereavements in short succession. It’s fast-paced, kind of ridiculous viewing that takes you down an extremely twisty path before tying everything up in a big not-exactly-watertight-but-it’ll-do-fine knot – which makes it pretty perfect viewing for a brain-fogged New Year’s Day after all of December’s indulgences.

We’re just hours away from the premiere of Mike Flanagan‘s last series for the Netflix streaming service, the Edgar Allan Poe-inspired limited series The Fall of the House of Usher. Mike Flanagan‘s company Intrepid Pictures has moved on from the Netflix streaming service and is now set up with a multi-year deal at Amazon’s Prime Video, but there’s still one last Flanagan-produced series coming to Netflix. It’s the Edgar Allan Poe-inspired limited series The Fall of the House of Usher, which will be available to watch as of this Thursday, October 12th. With the release date just hours away, a new promo has arrived online to let us be warned that Carla Gugino’s character is coming to cause trouble. You can check it out in the embed above.

Here’s the set-up for Poe’s story The Fall of the House of Usher: Roderick Usher and his sister Madeline are the only two surviving members of the aristocratic Usher family. For many years, they have lived together in the ancient mansion which is their ancestral family home.

Studiocanal has named Patrick Schweitzer as CEO of its UK-based It’s a Sin and Years and Years producer Red Production Company. An industry veteran, Schweitzer has worked across high-end television drama for 30 years. Prior to joining Red, he spent five years at Tall Story Pictures and executive produced such series as ITV’S Grace, Redemption, Bancroft season 2 and The Bay.

Previously, Schweitzer was producer in development on Sky’s Gangs of London, having also produced Sky’s Save Me, the BBC’s Ssgb, The Interceptor, Doctor Who and the final season of ITV’s Whitechapel.

Other credits include working as a location manager, then line producer. He was involved in launching such returning TV series as Ashes to Ashes, Spooks, Hustle, The Hour, Blackpool and Call the Midwife.

The British version of the iconic reality TV series “Big Brother,” which first launched 23 years ago, is set to return to ITV screens on Oct. 8. The show is hosted by Aj Odudu and Will Best and produced by Initial, part of Banijay U.K. “Big Brother: The Launch” will air on ITV1, ITV2 and streamer Itvx, while the remainder of the series will be available nightly at 9pm on ITV2 and Itvx, except Saturdays.

“Big Brother” will be followed each night by “Big Brother: Late & Live,” hosted live by Odudu and Best from the site of the Big Brother house in front of a studio audience, where evictees will be interviewed. Following this, “Big Brother: Live Stream” will stream live footage seven nights a week on Itvx.

The Banijay format is popular globally with some 500 seasons of the show having aired around the world in 64 countries and regions.

Mike Flanagan‘s company Intrepid Pictures has moved on from the Netflix streaming service and is now set up with a multi-year deal at Amazon’s Prime Video, but there’s still one last Flanagan-produced series coming to Netflix. Fans of Mike Flanagan rejoice for his follow-up to Midnight Mass and Haunting of Hill House will arrive just in time for Halloween. Netflix has just premiered the trailer for Flanagan’s The Fall of the House of Usher. The limited series takes inspiration from several Edgar Allen Poe works, many of which you can pick out from the trailer. The show mainly takes its cue from the Poe story of the same name.

Doctor Who is moving ahead with an exciting new era, but season 14 should copy Chris Chibnall's best storytelling decision. 2023 is Doctor Who's 60th anniversary, which sees the likes of David Tennant and Catherine Tate returning to the show. Russell T. Davies will be returning as showrunner for the anniversary special episodes, season 14, and beyond, with Sex Education's Ncuti Gatwa in the role of the Doctor.

As the show aims to progress under Davies, it should still look back and take Chibnall's best ideas from his era. Season 13, also known as Doctor Who Flux, was the first time since the show returned in 2005 that it told one serialized story. To truly bring Doctor Who up to date in the modern television landscape, Rtd should do the same.

The return of showrunner Russell T Davies to “Doctor Who” is already living up to expectations, and it hasn’t even started airing yet. It was recently announced that the show would be adding stage and screen actor Jonathan Groff. BBC said in a statement, “He’s on his way to jump aboard the Tardis in a mysterious and exciting guest role.” Who do you think he’ll be playing when he joins the adventure?

Composer Murray Gold is set to return to Doctor Who for the upcoming 60th anniversary specials. Gold first joined the series during showrunner Russell T Davies' initial tenure in 2005 and stayed on through Steven Moffat's era from 2010 to 2017. Gold departed Doctor Who alongside Moffat following the 2017 seasonal special "Twice Upon A Time," with Segun Akinola becoming the show's new composer under Chris Chibnall from 2019 to 2022.

Peaky Blinders and Gangs of London star Joe Cole has been cast as lead in real-time BBC thriller series Nightsleeper.

He’ll play opposite Alexandra Roach (The Light in the Hall) in the drama, which is from Nick Leather. Filming is underway in Glasgow, Scotland.

The BBC first announced the show in December, as we reported here. Set on a sleeper train from the Glasgow to London, the real-time drama follows a government agency desperately trying to intervene as events rapidly escalate onboard. Two strangers (Cole and Roach) are forced to work together to save the lives of disparate group of passengers, as the train hurtles towards “what might quite literally be its final destination.”

Liz Jensen’s bestselling 2009 novel “The Rapture” is to be adapted into a five-part drama starring Ruth Madeley, and produced by Mammoth Screen for BBC One and BBC iPlayer.

The writer is Bryony Kimmings (“Last Christmas”), with Rebecca Manley, and is directed by Chanya Button.

Recovering from a car crash which has left her paralysed, forensic psychologist Gabrielle Fox (Madeley) takes a job working in a maximum security facility for juvenile patients. Here she meets 16-year-old inmate Bethany Krall, who was found guilty of brutally murdering her mother, and tells Gabs that she has psychic powers. The BBC has tasked His Dark Materials writer Jack Thorne to pen a TV adaptation of William Golding’s seminal novel Lord of the Flies.

This marks the first time the novel will be made for television, though there have been two feature film adaptations — the first Peter Brook’s 1963 movie and the second made in 1990 by Harry Hook (above).

Sex Education producer Eleven is attached to make The BBC’s series, which was unveiled by BBC Chief Content Officer Charlotte Moore today at a Broadcasting Press Guild event in London. Several other announcements were also made (see below).

U.K. producer Nicola Shindler received on Tuesday the third Women in Series Award at Series Mania, Europe biggest TV festival.

Few awards seem such just reward. From serving as a script editor on “Cracker” (1993), Jimmy McGovern’s breakout, to producing his “Hillsborough” (1995) and executive producing “Queer as Folk” (1999) which heralded Russell T. Davies as a major writing talent, very few producers have been so consistently successful down the decades.

Shows produced by Shindler in just the last 10 years take in Sally Wainwright’s “Happy Valley” (2014), Harlan Coben’s “The Five” (2016) and “Safe” (2018), Davies’ “Years and Years and It’s a Sin, his consecration, and now “Nolly,” made by Shindler out of Quay Street Productions, her new label launched in 2021 as part of ITV Studios.
