José de la Torre, star of Netflix’s Spanish series Toy Boy, died December 5. He was 37.

Spanish publication Montilla Digital reported on de la Torre’s death, while Spanish actors have paid tribute to their former colleague on social media.

Montilla reported that the actor had been fighting a mystery illness, diagnosed just a few months ago.

De la Torre was one of the leads in Toy Boy, which tells the story of a male stripper wrongly convicted of murder. The show, which aired on Atresmedia in Spain, ran for two seasons.

His other credits include local series Amar es para siempre (To Love is Forever) and Servir y protege (Serve and Protect).

In an Instagram post, Spanish actress and singer Lolita Flores said: “How hard it is for me to accept that you’re gone, without even knowing you … Life is so unfair sometimes. You’re handsome on the outside and on the inside.

José de la Torre, who played Iván in the Spanish-language Netflix drama “Toy Boy,” has died. He was 37.

Spanish publication Montilla Digital was the first to report that the actor died on Dec. 5 after a long battle with an unknown illness. A funeral service was held in Spain the day after his death.

In June, de la Torre revealed he was diagnosed with what he described as a “serious illness” and had stepped away from acting to receive treatment the same month.

De la Torre was part of Netflix’s “Toy Boy” since its debut in 2019. The show ran for 21 episodes across three seasons until 2021. The series followed Hugo Beltrán, played by Jesús Mosquera, a stripper who “sets out to prove his innocence for a crime he didn’t commit and was unjustly incarcerated for seven years earlier,” according to the official logline.

Spanish public broadcaster Rtve, Prime Video and Telekom Srbija have boarded “Cicatriz,” a high-end action thriller, based on the best-selling Spanish novel of the same name by Juan Gómez-Jurado.

It is a first, large-scale co-production between Spain and the Adriatic countries, the partners said.

Leading Spanish indie Plano a Plano has snagged TV adaptation rights to “Lejos de Luisiana” by Luz Gabás, last year’s winner of Spain’s prestigious Planeta Award.

Plano a Plano acquired the rights from Book & Film Rights, the Editorial Planeta division which oversees local and international audiovisual adaptation deals as well as translation rights in international markets.

Since 1952, Planeta has bestowed an annual reward to outstanding unpublished Spanish-language works with the largest endowment worldwide, one million Euros.

Gabás’ acclaimed debut novel “Palm Trees in the Snow” (“Palmeras en la nieve”) was successfully adapted to the screen in 2015, winning two Goya, translated to multiple languages and grossing $18.3 million in Spain.

Asacha Media Group, the expanding pan-European company, is partnering up with Spain’s Plano a Plano and Mexico’s Dopamine on “Cicatriz,” a high-end action thriller based on Juan Gómez-Jurado’s bestselling novel.

“Cicatriz” is developed by a pair of established writers, Pablo Roa and Fernando Sancristóbal, whose credits include “Toy Boy,” “La Casa de Papel” and “Vis a Vis.”

Beta Film has partnered with Morena Films and Disney + Spain, picking up international distribution rights to the young-adult mystery drama “The Invisible Girl,” based on the best-selling book trilogy of the same name by Blue Jeans, a leading figure in YA literature.

The eight-hour series is being shot in Carmona, Southern Spain, and in various locations across the province of Seville, among them El Viso del Alcor and Gerena.

The thriller series, produced by Morena Films, stars Daniel Grao and Zoe Stein, playing father and daughter involved in the investigation of a murder of a teenage girl in the picturesque fictional town of Cárdena, set in Andalusia. Atresplayer Premium, the pay TV platform of Spanish media conglom Atresmedia Group, is dipping its toe into true-crime docuseries production with “Besos Marvin.”

Produced in-house by Atresplayer, the five-episode docuseries tells the story of Patrick Nogueira, a young murderer who shared his crime through WhatsApp with his 17-year-old best friend Marvin Enriques.

The events took place in the summer of 2016 in Pioz, a small town in the province of Guadalajara, in Spain’s Castille-La Mancha region.

When the bodies of a Brazilian couple, Marcos and Janaína, and their two young children, María Carolina and David, were found, a police investigation concluded that the murderer was Patrick, a 19-year-old nephew of the family, but the case took on a new dimension when it was discovered that on the night of the crime the young man talked via WhatsApp with his friend Marvin.

French studio Gaumont’s Cannes player “Aline, The Voice of Love,” freely inspired by the life of Canadian pop star Céline Dion, was partially filmed in Andalusian provinces of Málaga and Almería in June 2019.

Directed, co-written and starring France’s Valérie Lemercier, “Aline” screened July 13 out of competition as part of Cannes’ Official Selection, earning a full five-minute standing ovation.

Co-produced by Gaumont, Rectangle Productions, TF1 and De L’Huile in France, Caramel Films in Canada and Belgium’s Belga Productions, the two-week Andalusian shoot of the film was serviced by Áralan Cinema Services.

Beta Entertainment Spain is joining forces with Nicely Entertainment, the L.A.-based outfit run by former Gaumont executive Vanessa Shapiro, to produce the TV thriller series project “The Tamer.”

The project, about a serial killer who tames and trains other killers to take down more of their kind, has attached Spain’s Paco Torres (“El vuelo del tren”) as writer, director and showrunner, alongside Mexican director of photography Guillermo Navarro, who won an Academy Award for Guillermo del Toro’s “Pan’s Labyrinth.”

This deal marks an early incursion into the international TV drama production sector by Beta Entertainment Spain, the Madrid-based joint venture launched late last year by European film-tv giant Beta Film and Spanish producer Javier Pérez de Silva.

Bes is conceived as a bridge into the U.S. and Latin American TV markets.

Netflix has yet another hit show in its catalog, and it’s once again a production from Spain. It’s impossible not to compare Toy Boy to 2012’s Magic Mike and 2019’s Hustlers, which have largely redefined the portrayal of strippers on big and small screens. However, this TV series goes even further, taking cues from hit shows like Revenge, How To Get Away With Murder, and even Game of Thrones.

Toy Boy gives us everything: sex, love, crime, money, family, friendship. While we loved a lot of the characters and storylines on the show (and can’t wait for season 2!), there were also certain things that didn’t necessarily work out, or that left us wanting more.

Spain’s big shoot business is rocking, galvanized by more regional options and incentives that are highly competitive — at least in rates.

With a long tradition of hosting international productions, Spain earned larger global visibility after “Game of Thrones” filmed there from 2014 to 2018.

Production services has become one of the healthiest audiovisual sectors in Spain, driven by a golden age of local and international TV drama, as well as greater legal stability of its incentives. Spain’s mainland offers 20% tax rebates for international productions, capped at €3 million ($3.4 million); in the Canary Islands, the rate is 40%, with a €5.4 million ($6.1 million) ceiling.

“Tax advantages are attracting all kind of international productions,” says Nostromo’s Adrián Guerra, president of producers’ association Profilm.

“There are so many productions going on all over Spain that it’s becoming difficult to crew up on new productions,” he adds.

Challenges remain. The tax system is predominantly luring low-to-mid-range foreign projects.

Plano a Plano, one of the few top 100% independent production houses on the vibrant Spanish TV landscape, is exploring new market opportunities, dipping its toe into co-production, and preparing its first original series for Netflix.

Since 2014, Plano a Plano has produced some of the most successful series for Spain’s free-to-air TV market, such as thriller drama “El Príncipe” for Mediaset España; and culture-clash romcom “Down Below,” now in its fifth and final season at Atresmedia.

Headed by seasoned Spanish film and TV producer César Benítez, Plano a Plano is now eyeing diversification, testing new, at least for Spain, production models.

In one move, it has sealed a strategic alliance with Mexico’s Dopamine Studios to develop a still-untitled TV drama about Morelia’s care for Spanish children.
