Ryan Seacrest chuckled at a Wheel of Fortune contestant’s family who didn’t seem too excited that he was on the game show. The contestant lost $40,000 in the Bonus Round after a tough puzzle. Jeremy Nelson, from Chicago, Illinois, played against Sam Guarino, from Tustin, California, and Jack Kugel, from Jupiter, Florida, on Friday, March 21. Nelson started off the game by guessing the first tossup, “Strangers on a Train,” earning $1,000. He got another $2,000 when he guessed the second one, “Fun for the whole family.” During the first puzzle – “Travel Tips” – Nelson started off by landing on a wedge for a Rail Tour. If he solved the puzzle, he would get the trip and money. When the bar trivia host guessed a letter that wasn’t in the puzzle, the turn moved to Guarino. She guessed an “H” before landing on Bankrupt, so the turn moved to Kugel, a chicken wing joint owner.

In “Cicadas,” top German actress Nina Hoss (who also serves as executive producer) reunites with filmmaker Ina Weisse, the director of her 2019 drama “The Audition,” in which she played a tightly wound woman whose life is unraveling. That same logline could also describe Weisse’s latest, where Hoss embodies 48-year-old Isabell, a high-end Berlin realtor who is trying to care for her aging parents at the same time that her childless marriage to a French engineer is falling apart. Meanwhile, she’s drawn to Anja (Saskia Rosendahl), a struggling single mother from the Brandenburg countryside where Isabell’s architect father built a striking modernist home. Playing out in several non-complementary registers and burdened with a lot of barely sketched-out backstory, “Cicadas” is more confounding than compelling.

When it comes to iconic filmmakers, Alfred Hitchcock ranks as one of the most influential directors who made his mark with suspenseful mysteries and intense dramas such as North by Northwest, Strangers on a Train, and Rear Window. Known as The Master of Suspense, Hitchcock redefined the silver screen thriller with groundbreaking camerawork, impressionable characters, and alluring storytelling that continues to inspire filmmakers today.

The idea of a strangers meeting and agreeing to commit a murder swap of their respective spouses is tantalizing. Patricia Highsmith and Alfred Hitchcock famously explored the idea in Strangers on a Train, which is the clear precursor to Tubi’s latest thriller, A Kill for a Kill, though the new film gender-and race-swaps the characters.

Jaume Collet-Serra may not have attained the “household name” status that directors like Greta Gerwig and Jordan Peele have reached, but the Spanish-American filmmaker certainly knows how to make straightforward genre movies that feel like deliberate throwbacks. Although Collet-Serra has recently delved into blockbuster territory with the underwhelming Dwayne Johnson star vehicles Jungle Cruise and Black Adam, he was previously heralded for his recurring work with Liam Neeson, who surprisingly became one of the industry’s favorite action stars in the aftermath of the surprise success of Taken. Collet-Serra and Neeson made their homages to the work of Alfred Hitchcock with the amnesia mystery Unknown, the airplane thriller Non-Stop, and the Strangers on a Train homage The Commuter. However, the partnership between Collet-Serra and Neeson peaked with the gangster thriller Run All Night, which surprisingly turned out to be a pretty great Christmas movie.

The Young and the Restless (Y&r) spoilers reveal that November sweeps has been an interesting month in the land of Genoa City. Not only have Ian Ward (Ray Wise) and Jordan (Colleen Zenk) returned, but fans also learned they were the ones behind Heather Stevens’ (Vail Bloom) demise and that their target is Sharon Newman (Sharon Case).
Of course, Sharon decided to confess recently as well, so there’s a ton of legal drama on the horizon for her, too.
Y&r’s executive producer, Josh Griffith, recently talked about this intriguing storyline to Soap Opera Digest (Sod) and offered some hints on what’s to come.

Griffith reveals to Sod what a lot of fans had thought, and that was, Sharon was never the intended character to murder Heather, which is why she blacked out during the who event.

If Ian Ward is going to return to wreak havoc on a soap opera, he’s going to have to inflict maximum damage on the ones he’s damaged previously. And on The Young and the Restless, that means Sharon, Phyllis, and the Newmans.
Y&r’s Revenge Agenda
Things for Sharon (Sharon Case) turned dire with Heather’s (Vail Bloom) murder, which, thankfully, Sharon didn’t commit. When originally brainstorming the creative on this storyline, Y&r head writer and executive producer Josh Griffith had to come up with a good villain. “I started looking into, historically, who had a beef with the Newmans,” he told Soap Opera Digest.
Read This: Could this be Ian’s ultimate plan on Y&r?
Once he chose Ian Ward to make a comeback, he decided to add an additional element. It turns out an Alfred Hitchcock movie inspired him during this phase of the process.

Now that they’ve set the year’s best film for a December 10 debut, the Criterion Channel have unveiled the rest of next month’s selection. John Waters’ films are inseparable from John Waters’ presence, making fitting Criterion’s decision to pair an eight-film retrospective (Multiple Maniacs to Cecil B. Demented) with his own “Adventures in Moviegoing” wherein the director extols virtues of Bergman, Chabrol, Barbara Loden, and Samuel Fuller. His own Polyester will have a Criterion Edition alongside the Bob Dylan doc Don’t Look Back, an iconic film in its own right and, I think, fitting companion to The Unknown with Lon Chaney, also streaming on Criterion. No Country for Old Men and Election receive likewise treatment; the latter appears in “MTV Productions,” a series featuring Beavis and Butt-Head Do America, The Original Kings of Comedy, and (coming close to Freddy Got Fingered for least-expected 2024 addition) Jackass: the Movie.

As the master of suspense, it's no surprise that Alfred Hitchcock is behind some phenomenal scary movies perfect for Halloween. The iconic English director is well known as one of the greatest minds to ever step behind the camera, particularly when it comes to his terrifying thrillers. From Alfred Hitchcock's murder mysteries to his more straightforward horror movies, the man's filmography is a perfect library to reach for during the spooky season.
Admittedly, by modern standards, Alfred Hitchcock's work can sometimes feel quite tame, groundbreakingly terrifying at the time of their release but noticeable aged. Still, his scariest films offer some level of creep factor, slow-burn dread, and above all else, suspense that make them well worth watching even today. With a whole coterie of noticeably frightening films, Alfred Hitchcock forever changed cinema with his unique sensibilities for fear and tension.

After months competing rumours, a frontrunner has reportedly emerged for director David Fincher’s next film: crime western, Bitterroot.
Whilst the past week may have seen a furious splurge of rumours regarding the nature of Christopher Nolan’s secretive next project, David Fincher is no slouch at this game either. The American filmmaker has kept us guessing for months already as to what direction Fincher’s follow-up to last year’s The Killer will take. A quick search within the Film Stories website shows four different rumoured projects since April, including a Squid Game remake, a Western and two Hitchcock remakes, Rope and Strangers On A Train.
However, it looks like an end to the ongoing speculation may finally be in sight. A new posting at Production List states that Bitterroot, Fincher’s western project, is set to shoot in January of next year. World Of Reel also seems to confirm this,...

Bubble, boil, steam, and burn, it’s time to watch those film reels turn. That’s right, it’s October, which means it’s almost Halloween, but the minute the clock struck midnight on the 1st, we here at IndieWire were already decked in black and frightening our office mates at Variety and The Hollywood Reporter. A rumor had been going around that Alfred Hitchcock’s Rope was being developed into a remake. And World of Reel is now confirming that the project is indeed happening and the film may be securing David Fincher to direct. Fincher was recently trying to develop a remake of another Alfred Hitchcock classic, Strangers on a Train, which was said to be eyeing Brad Pitt and Ben Affleck to star. However, now it seems as though Fincher is instead opting to remake Rope as, according to Netflix’s Kasey Moore, the film is moving forward. Denzel Washington and/or Charlize Theron may be up for roles in the film.
The plot synopsis for the Alfred Hitchcock original reads,
“Just before hosting a dinner party, Philip Morgan (Farley Granger) and Brandon Shaw (John Dall) strangle a mutual friend to death with a piece of rope, purely as a Nietzsche-inspired philosophical exercise.

David Fincher is reportedly in the midst of developing a new project for Netflix: a remake of the classic 1948 Alfred Hitchcock film Rope. A new David FIncher rumour: he’s reportedly set to remake Alfred Hitchcock’s Rope, with Charlize Theron lined up for a starring role.
Another week, another David Fincher rumour. Given how many stories we’ve heard of late regarding Fincher’s next project for Netflix, we’re beginning to wonder if the Fight Club filmmaker is orchestrating a disinformation campaign worthy of Project Mayhem, the anarchist movement from his 1999 masterpiece.
Recent weeks have seen stories emerge that suggested Fincher would be remaking Squid Game, the hit South Korean Netflix show as an English language film. Just a few days ago, a story appeared that claimed he would be making a western next titled Bitteroot, modelled after the style of Clint Eastwood’s 1992 classic, Unforgiven. Oh, and it doesn’t seem like that long ago since reports suggested that his next film would be a remake of Alfred Hitchcock’s Strangers On A Train.

The films and style of Alfred Hitchcock are regarded with high honor in the canon of cinema, and rightfully so. However, this can sometimes negate the sheer entertainment value of his work. The Master of Suspense had a populous touch, which allowed his films to be accessible by many while still being smart and thought-provoking. Traces of Hitchcock are identifiable in modern films of all genres and gravity, from horror to thrillers. However, you probably wouldn't expect to find so many Hitchcokian tropes in a big-budget studio comedy starring Jason Sudeikis. And yet, that's exactly the case with Horrible Bosses, a film that is not a direct remake of a Hitch film, Strangers on a Train, but is substantially indebted to the director's work.

Ever since the release of the Alfred Hitchcock thriller Strangers on a Train in 1950, Hollywood has become obsessed with adapting the work of the acclaimed author Patricia Highsmith. Highsmiths novels often deal with themes such as class divisions, suppressed romance, and latent conspiracies that feel inherently cinematic. While the character of Tom Ripley, first introduced by Highsmith in her 1955 novel The Talented Mr. Ripley, has been brought to the screen more than any other Highsmith creation, her 1952 romance novel The Price of Salt is largely considered to be one of her best works by the literary community. The Price of Salt also served as the direct inspiration for Todd Haynes Academy Award-nominated drama Carol.

Everyone loves a good mystery, and some of the best ones can be found in film noir classics such as Laura, Out of the Past, and Alfred Hitchcock's Strangers on a Train. Rooted in German Expressionism and popular pulp fiction crime novels, film noir is a term used to describe a film style that typically emphasizes cynical motivations and attitudes conveyed by a cast of intriguing characters. The 1940s and 1950s were considered the height of film noir and were initially popularized by visionary filmmakers including Billy Wilder, Fritz Lang, and Robert Siodmark.

What's Daniel Day Lewis' best film? "Gangs of New York," perhaps? What about his Oscar-winning performance as the 16th President of the United States in "Lincoln?" Surely his efforts there should put Steven Spielberg's historical drama in the running for Lewis' finest work. Well, it's neither of these. Daniel Day Lewis' best film is, in fact, 1985's "A Room With a View," — at least according to Rotten Tomatoes.

When you think of the very best Alfred Hitchcock movies, you might think of, say, "Psycho" or "Vertigo." You might consider "The Birds" — controversial though it may be — as the director's finest moment, or "Rear Window" might spring to mind. But while these are all excellent examples of Hitch's undeniable directing talent, there's an impressive array of underrated Hitchcock movies worth watching.
Take "Strangers on a Train" for example. This 1951 thriller stars Farley Granger as Guy Haines and Robert Walker as Bruno Antony, who are, believe it or not, two strangers who meet on a train. The thing about Bruno, however, is that he's also a psychopath, and suggests to Guy that they "swap murders" so as to do away with Guy's estranged wife and Bruno's overbearing father. From Bruno's perspective, because both men will essentially be killing strangers, no one will suspect either of them. When Guy laughs off this nefarious plot,...

There’s a story Alfred Hitchcock always liked to tell about how, when he was five years old, his father dropped him off at the local police station near his home in East London. William Hitchcock left a note for the coppers explaining that his son had been misbehaving. A policeman locked young Alfred in a cell for a few minutes and explained, “This is what we do to naughty boys.”
When Hitchcock recounted that story to Dick Cavett he was in his 70s, but the incident continued to leave a profound mark on the director. He said he was still “terrified of the police” because of that and drew a connection from that to the feelings of guilt and wrong-men-on-the-run paranoia that seeps into so many of his films.
The funny thing is, though, father characters are almost entirely absent from Hitchcock’s work. There are a few: Cedric Hardwicke...

Is 2024 the year of tennis? At the movies and on our TV screens, the answer might be yes. This spring brings two major releases that both heavily feature racquets, green courts, and sweaty tennis action. The first was Peacock’s “Apples Never Fall,” a limited series based on “Big Little Lies” scribe Liane Moriarty’s novel about the family of two married tennis pros (played by Annette Bening and Sam Neill) who are forced to contend with the mysterious and sudden disappearance of their matriarch. Even more anticipated is “Challengers,” a Luca Guadagnino film that arrives — after strike-related delays — this April to tell the steamy story of a tennis coach (Zendaya) caught between her husband and an old flame as the two men go head to head in a Challenger tennis event.
These two releases mark the biggest Spring for tennis-related media in…possibly ever. Which isn’t necessarily hard...

Author Patricia Highsmith has been responsible for many of our most beloved works of film and TV. After Saltburn re-catapulted The Talented Mr. Ripley into the cultural conversation, the new TV adaptation of her seminal book series has just come out on Netflix. There's also 2015's Carol, the immediate queer classic that was adapted from her second book, The Price of Salt. But it wasn't just posthumously that Highsmith achieved all this success onscreen – her very first novel, Strangers on a Train, was adapted by none other than the Master of Suspense Alfred Hitchcock into one of his perennial thriller classics merely a year after its publication.

Ripley series rehabilitates Highsmith's reputation with gripping storyline, stylish cinematography, and 87% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Deep Water, an adaptation of Highsmith's work with Affleck, falls short due to crucial differences and lukewarm critical response. Affleck's missed opportunity in Highsmith adaptations, including a failed Strangers on a Train remake, contrasts with success in Gone Girl.
Netflix's thriller series Ripley is not only proving a hit with critics in its own right, but is also helping to rehabilitate the reputation of a failed 2022 Ben Affleck thriller. Starring Andrew Scott, the series is a retelling of Patricia Highsmith's acclaimed 1955 novel The Talented Mr. Ripley – a story that has been adapted for the screen on several previous occasions. However, while the parallels between Ripley, Highsmith's original novel, and earlier versions are obvious, the series also has more subtle connections to Affleck's much-maligned movie.

David Fincher’s next film for Netflix is his long, long cherished remake of Alfred Hitchcock’s Strangers On A Train. More here.
Following the release of The Killer on Netflix late last year, David Fincher signed a new deal with the streaming platform which is believed to tie him exclusively to the company for another three years.
While the boss of Cannes (and anybody else who yearns to see Fincher’s work back on the big screen) expressed some dismay that the American filmmaker’s next few projects would go straight to the small screen, at least Fincher’s Netflix deal has seen him become more prolific of late.
In the last three years, Fincher has created Mank and The Killer for Netflix, a veritable landslide of films when you consider that prior to this flurry of films, it took Fincher almost a decade to release two films, those...

Scott, Flynn, and Fanning are fantastic in this gripping Netflix thriller. Elswit's cinematography is visually stunning and adds to the authenticity. Zaillian's elegant storytelling brings Highsmith's character to life in a new way.
The following contains spoilers for Ripley, now streaming on Netflix.
Ripley is an enigma. Written and directed by Oscar winning screenwriter Steven Zaillian (Schindler’s List) with all the precision of a master craftsman, this Netflix adaptation of the Patricia Highsmith novels defies description. Captured in black and white by Academy Award-winning cinematographer Robert Elswit (who also worked on the acclaimed film There Will Be Blood), Ripley features a magnetic performance from Andrew Scott. His Tom Ripley watches everyone, absorbs everything and finds an angle everywhere -- making the TV series one of the most exciting dramas in recent memory.
When other actors have already played Thomas Ripley, some audiences may wonder what makes this new series so special.

March featured a variety of conversations, including the Kristen Stewart vehicle Personal Shopper (listen), Alfred Hitchcock’s Strangers on a Train (listen), and Raja Gosnell‘s live-action cartoon sequel Scooby-Doo 2: Monsters Unleashed (listen here).
After previously covering The Old Dark House and Bride of Frankenstein, we wrapped the month up with another James Whale classic, The Invisible Man (1933).
In the film, Jack Griffin (Claude Rains) is an egomaniac with plans to sell his invisibility formula for a fortune, but first he has to “find a way back” from invisibility with the help of scientist/love interest, Dr. Kemp (William Harrigan). Everyone has done jobs they're not particularly proud of in their past. For actors, any of these past works are in the public eye, even if some go on to be largely forgotten. This includes the fan-favorite horror genre, from cheap, grindhouse and direct-to-video schlock to big-budget misfires. Beyond the quality of the movies, some actors just didn't have particularly pleasant experiences behind-the-scenes, leading them to distance themselves from their projects after completion. Every actor has a handful of films that they wish they hadn't signed on for, and with the benefit of hindsight, several have gone public with their regrets.
From established genre icons disappointed at their respective franchise returns to newcomers trying to get their start, horror has no shortage of movies Hollywood stars want off their resume. In a particular instance, one actor's horror movie experience led them to not only regret their participation, but quit acting altogether.

Matthew Vaughn’s Argylle seems to have spilt audiences and critics all over the world. From being branded as over-the-top fun, to the worst film of the year. While it’s neither of them, at times it can be argued that it’s fallen into each argument.

In this weird world of spinoffs and sequels, you can never say never to the possibility of a legacy sequel, no matter how unlikely it seems. Some of them are ill-advised, but sometimes we get the chance to return to some great creative ground that just didn't get the chance for a sequel during its era for whatever reason. Movies from the 1980s and 1990s that have found cult status have the potential to find an even bigger audience with a legacy sequel, and as long as the original stars are interested, it can happen! That seems to be the case for "Throw Momma From the Train," the 1987 dark comedy directed by Danny DeVito and starring DeVito and Billy Crystal. The movie follows an author named Larry (Crystal) and one of his writing students, Owen (DeVito), after they become entangled in a murder plot directly inspired by Alfred Hitchcock's "Strangers on a Train.

Guillermo del Toro doesn’t hold back about his love for his favorite movies. If you’ve spent any time on his Twitter feed over the years, you’ve likely seen him praise Stanley Donen’s use of the color red throughout the late director’s body of work, and hail everything from William Wellman’s 1931 film “Other Men’s Women” to David Cronenberg’s “Crimes of the Future” from 2022. The man has wide-ranging taste, and a deep awareness of cinematic history that’s informed his own films.

"Saltburn" is a different kind of monster movie.
Playing like a gothic romance (in the traditional sense of the word) retold through the lens of Patricia Highsmith's Ripley stories, it's one of the bleakest films of 2023, and a real bad time at the movies. In a good way -- this is a film that revels proudly in its darkness. Because writer/director Emerald Fennell, who proved adept at pushing the right buttons with the similarly cruel "Promising Young Woman," knows that monsters can be seductive, that we can and will have sympathy for the devil, and that we'll follow an especially clever creature to the ends of the earth if they prove interesting enough.
And Oliver Quick, played by Barry Keoghan with the kind of shocking bravery that has catapulted him to the top of the "most interesting actors in the world" list over the past few years, is a special kind of monster.
