Whether it’s the original director or not, following up all time classics in a series is a tall task. We have seen it with many of the greatest movies of all time like Rick Rosenthal having to follow up John Carpenter and Halloween or John Boorman following up William Friedkin and The Exorcist. Sometimes the original director has a go at it for contractual obligations like Tobe Hooper and Cannon films giving us Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 or for passion like John Carpenter himself electing to attempt to give us a better version of Escape from New York but in Los Angeles. Sorry, John, we still think you are wrong about that one. One director that made a career of it was George Romero. While he certainly had a varied career with things like Knightriders, Creepshow, and Monkey Shines, he is also the godfather of modern zombie horror. After Night of the Living Dead...

The horror genre is best known for its “Final Girls,” and JoBlo’s own Ryan Cultrera was recently able to catch up with several popular Final Girls at the Ve Neill’s Vampire Weekend convention in California. This week, we’ve shared Ryan’s interviews with Lisa Wilcox from the Elm Street franchise, Christine Elise from the Child’s Play / Chucky franchise, and Melanie Kinnaman from Friday the 13th: A New Beginning. Now, Ryan wraps up this interview series by having a conversation with one of the horror genre’s greatest male heroes – Ken Foree.
Foree has over 100 screen acting credits to his name and, in recent years, has been a regular in Rob Zombie movies, showing up in the likes of The Devil’s Rejects, Halloween, and The Lords of Salem – but before he teamed up with Zombie, he was known to genre fans for playing heroic characters in George A. Few horror franchises are quite as complicated as The Amityville Horror franchise, though there’s a pretty clear reason as to why. Since Amityville is a real place, and the stories of both the DeFeo and Lutz families are historical, no single filmmaking entity can stake a claim. Want to make a movie titled Halloween? Go for it, but you’d better make sure there’s no Michael Myers. Want to make a movie about the haunted abode at 112 Ocean Avenue? Carte blanche freedom. Do whatever you want—not even the devil himself can stop you.
While there is a canonical series, the most recent entry of which is the Bella Thorne vehicle Amityville: The Awakening, there are considerably more unrelated horror movies endeavoring to capitalize on the famous property’s name. It reminds me a lot of when an old coworker thought they bought a new Shark Tale movie for their kid.

Everyone knows the first rule of movie theater etiquette is that you don't use your phone during the movie. Even Cheech and Chong know that. However, Blumhouse and Meta have teamed up to promote the latter's new Movie Mate technology, in conjunction with a rerelease of one of the former's biggest horror hits, with a new initiative that encourages moviegoers to use their mobile devices during special screenings. Variety reports that the new technology will be used during a special screening of M3GAN.
The event is billed as a "second screen" experience: moviegoers in the M3GAN screenings will be able to Dm the official M3GAN Instagram account, allowing them to talk in real time with a M3GAN chatbot. The technology will also unlock exclusive content, trivia, and behind-the-scenes info in real-time. One of the most exciting and infuriating things about movies are the deleted scenes that never made it to the final picture. Remember, Duddley telling Harry that he is not a waste of space, or Luke Skywalker finishing his iconic green lightsaber? Well, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has no shortage of similar deleted scenes that would have made the whole movie even better.
Given the ‘developmental hell’ Captain America: Brave New World was stuck in and the reshoots it supposedly had, it isn’t surprising that there have been more than a few deleted scenes. Recently, one of them, featuring Harrison Ford’s Potus Ross, was released, and fans believe that it was a big mistake to have it deleted.

The 2010s proved to be an amazing decade for horror. Following a disappointing drought in quality horror films since the glory days of the ‘70s and ‘80s, scary movies yearned for a reawakening, and the 2010s certainly delivered on that front. Movies like “It Follows”, “The Conjuring”, and “A Quiet Place” helped to return the genre to its roots and remind the world of the beauty of terror, while box-office successes like “It” and “Halloween” proved that the classics could still be profitable.
Needless to say, fans were excited and the horror genre was thriving. Then, seemingly out of nowhere, three names gained more and more prominence in the latter half of the decade: Jordan Peele, Robert Eggers, and Ari Aster. Each bringing a new voice to the genre, with highly acclaimed debuts and successful follow-ups, these directors brought an unexpected resurgence to the ‘serious horror film’. Christine Elise has shared the screen with Chucky the killer doll several times over the decades, first appearing as the heroine Kyle in Child’s Play 2 back in 1990, then reprising the role for Cult of Chucky (the seventh film in the series) in 2017 and multiple episodes of the Chucky TV show, which ran for three seasons, from 2021 to 2024. JoBlo’s own Ryan Cultrera was able to catch up with Elise at the Ve Neill’s Vampire Weekend convention in California last month and talked with her about her experiences working with Chucky and interacting with the horror community – and you can find out what she had to say by checking out the interview video embedded above.

Hollywood Responds with Heart: Stars Unite Amidst L.A. Fire Victims Los Angeles is facing one of the most heartbreaking wildfire seasons in history. Entire neighborhoods in Pasadena, Pacific Palisades, Altadena, and Malibu have been consumed by the flames, leaving families with the only option to leave their homes with barely anything more than the clothes on their backs. While the fires have left chaos on countless lives, Hollywood stars have taken action to show that Los Angeles is more than just a beacon of glamour. A-list celebrities have come together to support the victims, providing both long-term aid and immediate relief. John Carpenter finally gets his long-deserved star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The iconic - and subversive - director of the landmark Halloween (1978) continues influencing modern horror creatives and putting money in studio pockets.
On April 3, 2025, Carpenter received a tremendous honor acknowledging his five roller-coaster decades in the film industry. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce certainly values his work. It awarded him a coveted place among the legends on Hollywood Blvd. Frequent Carpenter star Kurt Russell joined fellow alumnus from The Thing (1982), Keith David, to honor the director in front of the press.

The Master of Horror has officially been immortalized on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and frankly, it’s about damn time. John Carpenter, the man behind some of the most influential, inventive, and flat-out terrifying horror films ever made, now has a star to match the impact he’s had on the genre (and cinema as a whole). Whether it’s masked killers in suburbia, shape-shifting aliens in Antarctica, or reality-bending nightmares dripping with cosmic dread, Carpenter’s work has long lived where horror and cool collide.
But before all that – before Halloween changed the face of slashers and The Thing made us scared of our friends. Carpenter was a film school upstart with a Super 8 camera and a knack for doing things his own way. He studied at USC’s School of Cinematic Arts, where he co-wrote and scored the Oscar-winning short The Resurrection of Broncho Billy. His first...

Just one week after yet another non-update on the status of Happy Death Day 3, franchise star Jessica Rothe announced at a double feature screening of the first two movies that the long-awaited third installment in the horror-comedy franchise is now “moving forward”!
“The third movie is moving forward,” Jessica Rothe said on stage at the American Cinematheque last night, with Happy Death Day director Christopher Landon by her side.
Landon himself added, “It is moving forward.”
It’s been six years since the release of Happy Death Day 2U, with fans spending these past six years wondering why the financially successful franchise hasn’t yet made its return. Landon recently revealed that Universal and Blumhouse at one point considered doing a third installment as a three-part miniseries for Peacock, which of course didn’t end up happening.

Here’s When & Where You Can Stream Wolf Man Online! ( Photo Credit – YouTube )
Ready to howl at the moon from the comfort of your couch? Wolf Man is clawing its way onto streaming, and it’s not your average werewolf flick. This 2025 horror reboot takes a big bite out of the genre, with Saw writer Leigh Whannell sinking his teeth into the director’s chair.
Originally meant to be part of Universal’s abandoned Dark Universe, this beast of a film has transformed into something far more personal and hairy. Centered on a devoted husband and father cursed with lycanthropy, Wolf Man howls with tension, heart, and fur-flying action.
While the box office wasn’t exactly howling in delight, the film boasts a sharp cast and a darker, moodier vibe than your typical monster mash. If you missed it in theaters (or just prefer not to be scared in public...

Netflix subscribers are in the good part of the month. We saw a lot leave to begin the month, as we always do, but the second week is normally better—or at least less sad. Such is the case with the second week of April. Netflix subscribers only have to watch a relatively few things go away, but at least two saying goodbye are going to be brutally tough.
Not to disrespect anyone's favorite film, as the movies leaving in the first few days of the week will be bound to have someone say it's their favorite, but the final day of the week? Ew. Two completely different, but equally excellent, movies are gone.
Ok one of the films leaving on April 11 is atrocious. We did not want to (one again) disrespect film lovers who think Pixels is the best flick ever. It's not, but one can think that./ The...

There’s at least one more season of American Horror Story on the horizon and details about the upcoming Season 13 are starting to come in.
It’s difficult for any television series to sustain itself for a dozen seasons, but American Horror Story has experienced a particularly fascinating trajectory that’s often more chaotic than it is creative. Regardless of one’s opinion on American Horror Story – its current state or the series in general – there’s no denying that it ushered in a new wave of anthology storytelling that’s still popular a decade later. There’s been an increasingly blasé approach to American Horror Story seasons that it’s sometimes easy to forget about the tremendous pomp and circumstance that surrounded the early seasons and how each year’s theme would be teased and revealed like a major event. While it can occasionally be fun to dive into the origin story of your favorite superhero or see the Muppets as little babies or whatever, a prequel is by definition an unnecessary story. That’s especially true for…

Things got freaky deaky during the final day of CinemaCon today at the Colosseum in Caesars Palace. Bringing the audience the very best of their upcoming lineup, Disney went all out with a little bit of everything for every type of fan. From the animated to the dramatic, it was all there as the studio closed out the four-day event with their presentation. And, while we loved seeing everything they had to offer, it was the nostalgia that really captured our attention, with a new look at the highly-anticipated Freakier Friday. With Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan reprising the roles they first played over two decades ago, the teaser ramped up the energy in the room with the pair’s return to a movie that has long been hoped for by the fandom, particularly with the big return of Jake (Chad Michael Murray).

April 3, 2025, was the night filmmaker John Carpenter came home…or rather, the day the Master of Horror was recognized for his contributions to film history by finally receiving a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Many a horror fan would argue the moment has been a long time coming for Carpenter. The titles feature homicidal robot girls, murderous animatronic mascots, a jacked and terrifying (and undead?) Ethan Hawke and a sentient sex doll. It’s what we love and expect from the producer of “Whiplash” and “BlacKkKlansman.”
This is the first time Blumhouse has presented to exhibitors since merging with horror company Atomic Monster, founded by “The Conjuring” and “Insidious” mastermind James Wan.
Here’s a rundown of the Blumhouse wares:
Five Night’s at Freddy’s 2
Blum himself kicked off his section of the Universal presentation dressed as the titular animatronic bear, Freddy. He pumped up the crowd of exhibitors by revealing that “Five Nights at Freddy’s 2” will debut exclusively in theaters in December.

Back in October, I got my hands on the Special Edition of Nighthawk Interactive’s Halloween and Ash vs Evil Dead RetroRealms Double Feature. I mean, I preordered that baby, desperate for all the goodies and collectibles, plus games centering around two of my favorite horror franchises, despite my innate resistance toward 2D action platformers. The games are fine, probably great if you’re a fan of that genre, though the novelty of a pixel art-styled sidecroller with 16-bit visuals where I got to play as Ash and Michael Myers was enough to leave me satisfied with my purchase.
After all, I love video games, especially horror video games, though known properties are rarely adapted as anything other than asynchronous multiplayer titles. I tried Friday the 13th: The Game, hated the matchmaking, and thus never even bothered to try my hand at Evil Dead: The Game, The Texas Chain Saw Massacre,...

Superman director James Gunn hopes his reboot, featuring the popular caped crusader, propels the DC Universe to new heights during its infancy. The DC Studios co-ceo teases how the upcoming Warner Bros. tentpole will set the right tone for the Dcu, insisting it's a "different" and "exciting" project that offers fresh experiences for fans.
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Gunn said that Superman is "100% a James Gunn movie," though he stressed that he doesn't want other films in the Dcu to mirror his work. He also cites DC Comics' storytelling approach as inspiration for his Superman reinterpretation. "I think it's only setting the tone so far as that this is 100 percent a James Gunn movie," he said. "And what I want with the future films is for them to be the same - not James Gunn movies - but when I talked to Craig Gillespie who's doing Supergirl, I said, 'I...

Creature Commandos offered fans a glimpse of the new Dcu, and for the most part, it wasn't that different - tonally, at least - from The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker. The main thing those films and TV shows have in common is that they were all helmed by James Gunn.
Does that mean Superman will boast the same look and feel? While there are recurring themes through the filmmaker's Marvel and DC work, Guardians of the Galaxy isn't The Suicide Squad, and this reboot is bound to feel vastly different give who the lead character is.
Entertainment Weekly recently spoke to Gunn and asked how Superman sets the tone for DC Studios' Dcu. The movie will be followed by Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, and then vastly different stories like Clayface and Sgt. Rock.

“Devil May Cry” is keeping the late ’90s/early ’00s throwback train rollin’ with the reveal of its official soundtrack.
In addition to Limp Bizkit‘s “Rollin’,” a remix of Papa Roach‘s “Last Resort,” and the new Evanescence single “Afterlife,” the show will feature “Guerrilla Radio” by Rage Against the Machine, “Butterfly” by Crazy Town, “Ghost” by Gunship, and an as-yet-unspecified Green Day song.
Synthwave duo Power Glove also puts its spin on two Devil May Cry 5 tracks composed by Casey Edwards, “Bury the Light” and “Devil Trigger.”
Based on the Capcom video game franchise, the eight-episode animated series releases tomorrow, April 3, on Netflix.
Sinister forces are at play at the portal between the human and demon realms. In the middle of it all is Dante, an orphaned demon hunter for hire, unaware that the fate of both worlds hangs around his neck.

In two decades at Variety, I have reviewed precious few slasher movies. Call me old-fashioned, but I don’t take much pleasure in what Roger Ebert called “dead teenager movies” — and yet, for some reason, this week I am writing about three. The clearest explanation I can point to is the fact that, at a time of considerable economic uncertainty in the film industry, horror movies are performing better than ever: They’re cheap, they’re profitable and they consistently draw audiences without the cost of a massive marketing campaign.
Neon has been smart with “Hell of a Summer,” a summer camp slasher comedy the genre-savvy distributor picked up last August, nearly a year after it premiered in Midnight Madness at the Toronto Film Festival. Last year, an adaptation of the Stephen King novel The Long Walk (which was, like The Running Man and Thinner, published under the pen name Richard Bachman) went into production, with director Francis Lawrence, whose previous credits include Constantine, I Am Legend, Water for Elephants, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Parts 1 and 2, Red Sparrow, Slumberland, and The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, at the helm. Now, the first trailer for the film has been shown to the audience at the CinemaCon event, and JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray was there to see it!

Name a more iconic duo than John Carpenter and Kurt Russell. Sure, they may not have collaborated on a film in decades, but back in the '80s, they were a lethal pairing, especially when it came to stylish genre films. In total, the pair made five movies together between 1979 and 1996. And today, we're going to rank them.
While Carpenter first gained fame as a horror auteur (the genre for which he's still best known today), he's directed all sorts of movies over the years, and his collaborations with Russell are great examples of that. Only one of the duo's films is a horror flick, while the others span the realms of biopic, science fiction, action-adventure, and comedy. It's an eclectic mix, to be sure, but also a solid one.

Dracula, Wolf Man, Frankenstein, his Bride, the Creature from the Black Lagoon, the Invisible Man… all will be covered. Last month, the gang sank their fangs into George Waggner’s 1941 werewolf classic The Wolf Man starring Lon Chaney Jr. This month, they’re heading to ancient Egypt to unravel Karl Freund‘s 1932 classic The Mummy starring Boris Karloff.
Topics include: the origins of the mummy mythos, Egyptomania, Karloff’s rising star, the boring nature of the human male lead, the grueling yet underused makeup, scaling up the ambition of Universal Monster movies, and much, much more.

For most people, horror is an acquired taste. The genre explores the darkest, most disturbing parts of ourselves and our psyches, making for stories that can range from grotesque and gory to just downright disturbing. For critics, that may not necessarily be what they look for in a movie, but for horror fans, it is the precise reason they adore the genre. As such, in the ongoing (and endlessly tiresome) culture war between critics and audiences, horror tends to be more divisive than not. Despite the site's questionable operations and easily-manipulated review system, Rotten Tomatoes continues to be the battleground in which this war is waged.
Each case is different: Some films have ardent fandoms behind them, others garner cult followings over time, and some premiere to critical fanfare but simply do not age with audiences. Whatever the case may be, these 12 horror films feature significant enough gaps in their...

The horror genre tends to have some of the most iconic movie posters ever: The Exorcist, Halloween, Alien, the list goes on. And certainly one in the discussion is The Evil Dead, which sees Cheryl (Ellen Sandweiss) being pulled into the ground by an undead hand. So what’s the backstory on this incredible art? Bruce Campbell has the entire history.

As Campbell wrote, “This pix was taken in a chilly Ferndale, Michigan warehouse studio, early 80s, by old pal Mike Ditz because we had no publicity shots for our first flick, Evil Dead. Fantasy films are some of the most treasured in the history of cinema, with franchises like Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter and Star Wars using classic tropes that date back to stories like the King Arthur mythology to entice viewers. The best fantasy movies are the ones that can present larger than life worlds that stand the test of time because they reveal something about the real world that we all live in.
Fantasy films that fall short are often the ones that just use the tropes and trappings of mystical worlds and magical potions to cover up a general lack of interesting characters or engaging story ideas. Film critic Roger Ebert's least favorite movies in the genre are the emptiest of the bunch, which have the most tropes but the least to say.

Since the Golden Age of Hollywood, the horror genre has given audiences an assortment of great scary movies, from Psycho and Dracula to Hellraiser and Halloween. Throughout that time, the genre has built up a number of iconic careers, with the likes of Robert Englund and Jamie Lee Curtis becoming household names in cinema. However, some of the best horror movies make great use of stars known for other genres, such as action, science fiction and comedy.
Scary movies have proven some of Hollywood's best stars every bit as versatile as their reputations suggest, turning action heroes into killers and child actors into horror icons. Seeing actors go against type often gives them some of their most memorable roles and best-remembered films, and some are great examples of this. Ranging from haunted house thrillers to slashers, these films proved their stars were more than their best-known roles.

Horror maestro John Carpenter hasn't directed in a movie in a decade and a half, but he doesn't consider himself retired. While he still feels great love for filmmaking, he's found himself unwilling to get back on a set again if he has to worry about the budget.
Carpenter discussed his career in a new interview with Variety, coinciding with how the famous filmmaker is getting his name added to the Hollywood Walk of Fame. He confirmed that he still has no active plans at this time to get back into the director's chair, but clarified that he's still willing to do so once again, albeit under the "right circumstances." Perhaps that means the 77-year-old director isn't through just yet, so as long as it's comfortably funded and stress-free.
"Plans? I don’t know," Carpenter said of his filmmaking future. "I would love to direct again, given the right circumstances.

Matt Reeves' The Batman fought colossal headwinds to become an instant classic, which is a major feat considering how crowded the field was. From Adam West to Christian Bale, movie screens have had no shortage of memorable Caped Crusaders. Bringing a new one into the equation felt like overkill, particularly with Ben Affleck's admittedly underrated Dark Knight being part of the Dceu monumental struggles. Another Batman movie on top of that felt like oversaturation, and yet Reeves created a compelling new version of The Dark Knight that felt as fresh as a daisy and as timeless as the classic comics stories that inspired it.
A great deal of that is owed to the totality of Reeves' world, and how every little detail fits his distinctive version of Gotham City. That pays huge dividends with his villain, The Riddler, who requires delicacy to render properly, but who soars under Paul Dano's terrific performance.

Movies are nothing without their characters, as they drive the story, whether fans love or hate them. Horror movies also rely on characters, with many of the genre’s tropes built around character archetypes. Everyone should know about the harbinger, who’s usually that creepy elderly guy local to the area who warns the main characters about danger and is promptly ignored. Then there’s the bimbo best friend built entirely on misogyny, who’s undeniably gorgeous, not the brightest, and sex-positive, and almost always dies after a rendezvous with the jock character. That’s not even considering the slasher or seemingly unstoppable monster threatening their lives.
Usually, only one character is guaranteed to survive a horror movie: the final girl or guy. Like Laurie Strode in Halloween, many surviving characters are highly beloved and well-known. But others are insufferable or simply implausible. Whether it be because of blood loss,...

John Carpenter hasn’t directed a movie in 15 years, but the man who gave us Halloween, Escape from New York, and The Thing is keen to get back behind the camera.
While speaking with Variety, Carpenter was asked if he has plans to direct anytime soon. “Plans? I don’t know. I would love to direct again, given the right circumstances,” he said. “But I’m not the same kid anymore who will do it for any amount of money. I can’t back into a budget anymore. I’m too old. It’s too hard. But directing is the love of my life. I’ll never stop loving that.“
Although I won’t hold my breath for another John Carpenter film, it’s good to know that his passion is still there. His last film, The Ward, wasn’t received all that well upon its release in 2010. Carpenter certainly...

Iconic filmmaker John Carpenter is just as keen to get back into directing as his fans are to see another movie from him. The director recently chatted with Variety ahead of his upcoming Walk of Fame star ceremony (taking place April 3) and said he'd "love to direct again, given the right circumstances."
Carpenter has directed several classic horror movies, most notably with the 1978 slasher Halloween, but his remake of The Thing has become even more beloved than the original. Some of his other famous films include Vampires, The Fog, They Live, and Escape from New York. He last directed the supernatural thriller The Ward in 2010.
Over 15 years later, and we're still waiting to see what movie he picks to helm next. According to his recent comments to Variety, the main thing holding him back is that he doesn't want to be backed "into a budget anymore," noting that "it's too hard.
