Are you ready to get groovy, baby? Cause Netflix is about to spin the clock back to 1975 for a month-long screening series held at its Egyptian Theatre in Los Angeles this upcoming May. Titled “1975: Fifty Is the New Hollywood,” this event aims to celebrate the 50th anniversary of what many consider the year that changed cinema forever, with films like Steven Spielberg’s “Jaws,” Mel Brooks’ “Young Frankenstein,” and Francis Ford Coppola‘s Oscar-winning “The Godfather Part II” all being released within the same 12-month span.
1975 marks the highpoint of the New Hollywood era, with gifted established filmmakers like Robert Altman, Akira Kurosawa, John Cassavetes, and Stanley Kubrick all going out on a limb to make their masterworks and newcomers like Spielberg, Coppola, Martin Scorsese, and Brian De Palma breaking through in ways that would forever alter the business and creative spirit of filmmaking. International cinema also introduced the world to the unconventional,...

Rami Malek believes his character in “The Amateur” stands apart from the typical espionage thriller protagonist.
“He’s extremely different. Usually, we see someone who would be difficult to necessarily relate to personally for the majority of us, whereas I think we can see a lot of ourselves in Charlie,” Malek told Variety at the film’s New York premiere. “Many of us, just day to day, probably feel overlooked and underestimated at some point. I know I have in the past; I can imagine 99.9% of us have. That’s who Charlie is.”

Michael Fassbender stars as George Woodhouse in director Steven Soderbergh’s Black Bag, a Focus Features release. Credit: Claudette Barius/Focus Features © 2025 All Rights Reserved. The spy thriller Black Bag, directed by Academy Award winner Steven Soderbergh, brings together a powerhouse cast, including Cate Blanchett and Michael Fassbender. The movie has been getting tons of praise for its intense story and top-notch performances. Here’s the setup: Kathryn Woodhouse, an intelligence agent, is accused of turning against her country. At the same time, her husband, a legend in the world of espionage himself, is put in an impossible spot. Does he stay loyal to the woman he loves or the nation they’ve both sworn to protect? It’s a tangled web of trust, betrayal, and sacrifice that keeps you guessing the whole way through. The movie feels like a love letter to classic 1970s thrillers, like Three Days of the Condor...

With the country in social and political turmoil in 1969, Paramount Pictures released Medium Cool, Haskell Wexler’s form-breaking, question-raising, cinematic signal-bearer to a nation going off the rails.
More than a half century later, one struggles to imagine Paramount guiding us this way again. These days, the studio grabs a lot more headlines for potentially paying off Donald Trump for 60 Minutes journalists doing their jobs, in a storyline that matches Medium Cool and its power-challenging cameraman John Cassellis in drama, if hardly in moral fortitude.
We shouldn’t pick on Paramount, of course. Studios in those years just before and after Watergate produced a host of establishment-challenging films, from All the President’s Men to Three Days of the Condor to Apocalypse Now — a nation badly in need of moral truth served by a Hollywood happy to supply it. Those movies reoriented how a country saw its leaders. In the process,...

The following contains mild spoilers about “Zero Day.”
Conspiracy thrillers can feel like a dime a dozen in this age of streaming and limited series, with everyone looking for a good binge, filled with suspense and mystery, to take them away from it all, if only for six or eight hours.
Yet amid the chaotic, unsettling nature of the current political moment, such material hits differently, and especially so with Netflix’s latest entry in the genre, “Zero Day,” which consciously leans into current events — down to its slogan, “The Truth Has Been Weaponized” — by conspicuously and self-consciously paralleling them.
In that sense, the six-episode project that premiered Friday potentially lays bare a challenge facing development executives more broadly as they look ahead, to the extent the show’s themes come across as less escapist than exhausting.
Marking his first foray into TV series, Robert De Niro heads a genuinely star-studded cast,...

On your left! Before Anthony Mackie leads the latest star-spangled adventure for Marvel Studios, Captain America: Brave New World, we’re looking back at the film that introduced the masses to Sam Wilson and gave Chris Evans’s Steve Rogers his best cinematic experience, Captain America: The Winter Solider. As the ninth film in Marvel’s cinematic universe and a sequel to 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger, The Winter Solider brings superhero cinema to another level for a political action-thriller unlike anything in the studio’s history before its 2014 release. Which begs the question: What the fuck happened to Captain America: The Winter Soldier?
Work on Captain America: The Winter Soldier began before Marvel released The First Avenger, with writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely penning the screenplay. Sydney Pollack is not always given the respect that he deserves as being one of the greatest filmmakers in history, and that may be because he has worked with such a diverse number of genres. Between a Best Picture-winning historical epic (Out of Africa), a haunting paranoia thriller (Three Days of the Condor), a classic adventure romance (The Electric Horseman), an all-time great comedy (Tootsie), and a brilliant courtroom thriller (Absence of Malice), Pollack was able to dip his toes into a variety of different filmmaking styles. Although it may be a challenge to identify recurring motifs within his work, Pollack’s filmography was distinguished by his frequent collaborations with Robert Redford. Pollack directed Redford to bring out one of his best performances ever in the survival thriller Jeremiah Johnson, which doubled as a subversive Western adventure.

Robert Redford's starred in and/or directed many iconic films throughout the years, but one of the genres he's found himself returning to is the political thriller. All The President's Menfeatured him as Bob Woodward, one of the journalists who investigated Watergate and brought down Richard Nixon; Three Days of the Condor has him as a CIA analyst who becomes embroiled in a web of lies and murder. Even Captain America: The Winter Soldierpays homage to this — though this time Redford's Alexander Pierce is the antagonist pulling the strings, instead of the protagonist. One political thriller showcases Redford in top form: Spy Game.

In the late 2000s and 2010s, AMC began to make a name for itself as a network that produced amazing dramas. Beginning with the premiere of Mad Men in 2007 and following, a year later, with the launch of Breaking Bad, AMC aired some of the best shows of the era that are still celebrated today. During this same period, the network also launched another dramatic series that had the potential to rival its other great shows. Regrettably, the spy thriller Rubicon only got a single season and was quickly forgotten. While it never achieved the success of its AMC peers, this drama is still a remarkable show and one of the best spy stories of all time.

Director Steven Soderbergh released his annual "Seen, Read" list of all the movies, TV shows, plays, books, and more he consumed in 2024. The famous helmer of Sex, Lies, and Videotape and Ocean's Eleven consumed a massive amount of content. But you'd be surprised to learn that the man who was once nominated for two movies for Best Director in one year watched the prequest Star Wars: The Phantom Menace (twice), Attack of the Clones, and Revenge of the Sith.
Soderbergh is known to be one of the busiest directors / producers / cinematographers in Hollywood, oftentimes directing and releasing multiple films per year. As an example, in 2023 alone, he directed Magic Mike's Last Dance and multiple episodes of TV shows, Command Z and Full Circle. Yet he also finds the time to watch and read dozens of films, shows, and books.

The 1970s were an explosive era for popular culture due to the high number of all-time classics released, as well as the shocking real-world events that ended up inspiring filmmakers. Although the “New Hollywood” movement that ushered in a new wave of artistic freedom had actually begun a decade prior with Bonnie & Clyde, Hollywood took an interest in addressing how its audience was affected by the aftermath of the scandals of the Richard Nixon administration, the lies told throughout the Vietnam War, and the growing anti-authoritarian movements that grew to be popular on college campuses. It was an era of paranoia, and it led to thrillers that became perfect representatives of the era. Three Days of the Condor was a brilliant spy thriller that intertwined conspiracy and murder and felt so authentic that it actually inspired an initiative by the Kgb.

Like the paranoid notions that drive their protagonists, conspiracy thrillers are constantly shifting. The genre is remarkably malleable; the ’60s, ’70s, and ’80s produced some of the form’s best — “The Manchurian Candidate,” “Three Days of the Condor,” “Blow Out” — each of which iterated on the hallmarks of the form. A good political thriller is often decidedly of the moment, with enough meat on its bones to become timeless as it ages, and there’s certainly no shortage of material to draw on, given our current political climate.
The arrival of Netflix’s “The Madness” couldn’t be more timely if it tried. Anchored by Colman Domingo, the 8-episode limited series created by Stephen Belber and co-showrun with VJ Boyd kicks off its premise in pretty short order: When media pundit Muncie Daniels (Domingo) becomes the prime suspect in the murder case of a notable white supremacist in the Poconos woods,...

The Amateur star Rami Malek and director James Hawes explain how the upcoming espionage thriller pulls from Slow Horses, which the latter directed episodes for. Based on a 1981 novel of the same name by Robert Littell, The Amateur follows a CIA cryptographer who, after losing his wife in a London terrorist attack, blackmails his agency into training him and letting him pursue the people responsible. The film will mark the latest espionage-themed project for Hawes, who directed all six season 1 episodes of Slow Horses, Apple TV+'s acclaimed spy show.
In a recent interview with Screen Rant, both Malek and Hawes explain how The Amateur draws from the spy movies that have come before, while also putting a very modern spin on its subject matter. Though the Jason Bourne films and classics like Three Days of the Condor (1975) are inspirations, Hawes affirms that it's also a "a very 2025 movie." Check...

In HBO's Game of Thrones, Bran Stark is called North of the Wall by a mysterious voice visiting him in his dreams, a voice that often takes the form of a three-eyed raven. In the finale of season 4, Bran finally makes it to a large cave beneath a weirwood tree where he meets the Three-Eyed Raven, played by Struan Rodger. After briefly introducing the character, the showrunners recast Struan Rodger with the more well-known Max von Sydow, and redesigned the character's visual appearance, greatly impacting the direction of the show's fantasy elements in future seasons.
The Three-Eyed Raven is a mystical green seer, who draws his powers from the magical weirwood trees. Before becoming an embodiment of the Old Gods and green magic, he was a powerful leader in Westeros, known as Brynden Rivers, or Bloodraven. Bloodraven, getting his name from a red birthmark in the shape of a raven on his face,...

Political thrillers were popular in the 1960s and '70s, producing classics like The Manchurian Candidate, The Conversation, and Three Days of the Condor. They appear to have fallen out of favor in recent years, perhaps because real-life politics has become so much more unbelievable. Indeed, it sometimes feels as if the whole world is living through a badly-written political thriller. Nevertheless, the last five years have yielded a few gems in this subgenre, which ought to please fans of political skullduggery and ever-ratcheting tension.

David Mackenzie is full of deceit. His movies, not him.
Mackenzie can lure you with the cunningness of an illicit couple, played by Tilda Swnton and Ewan McGregor, in his 2003 drama Young Adam. “Give us a come-hither look,” I remember him instructing Swinton on a barge berthed on the Forth and Clyde Canal in Scotland.
Treachery of a different kind is afoot in his latest film Relay, which had its world premiere Sunday at TIFF.
The chicanery is there. There’s no sex, but there’s seduction.
The audience is being seduced too; we’re being lulled. You’ve been warned.
The two protagonists are played by Riz Ahmed and Lily James, at the top of their game. And what delectable games they play.

If this year's entry in the Monsterverse, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, left you wanting more gorilla warfare, Paramount+ has you covered. This month, the streamer is adding the 1976 King Kong remake to its library. The film stars Jeff Bridges, Charles Grodin, and Jessica Lange. A remake of the 1933 original, King Kong was produced by legendary producer Dino De Laurentiis, who wanted his own monster movie to contend with the 1975 megahit Jaws. The film was directed by John Guillermin (The Towering Inferno) and penned by Lorenzo Semple, Jr. (Three Days of the Condor), and was expected to be the biggest hit of 1976, as it carried a then-Kong-sized $24 million budget.

The Marvel machine is revving itself back up.
Days after the first look at the upcoming Disney+ series “Agatha All Along,” Disney debuted the first teaser for “Captain America: Brave New World,” the first feature film with Anthony Mackie starring in the title role.
This fourth Captain America film has been long in the works. Initial production wrapped in the spring of 2023 and, recently, it was reported Marvel ordered reshoots in May of this year that added Giancarlo Esposito – featured heavily in the new teaser – to the cast. Tendrils for the film go back even further, however, to the 2021 Disney+ series “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,” which starred Mackie and Sebastian Stan in the lead roles and was set after the events of “Avengers: Endgame,” when Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) walked away from the shield.

Sydney Pollack was the Oscar winning filmmaker who could’ve branded himself as Hollywood’s favorite journeyman, crafting solid entertainments for over 40 years. But how many of his titles remain classics? Let’s take a look back at all 20 of his films as a director, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1934, Pollack got his start as an actor, studying under legendary New York teacher Sanford Meisner. He cut his teeth is television, appearing in such shows as “The Twilight Zone,” “Playhouse 90” and “Alfred Hitchcock Presents” before transitioning into directing for the small screen. Even after making a name for himself behind the camera, he kept popping up onscreen, starring in “The Player” (1992), “Husbands and Wives” (1992), “Eyes Wide Shut” (1999), “Changing Lanes” (2002), “Michael Clayton” (2007) and his own “Tootsie” (1982), to name but a few.
It was this experience as a performer that made him a favorite with actors, including Robert Redford, with whom he made seven films.

In 1960, Kirk Douglas had helped to break the Hollywood Blacklist with "Spartacus" by publicly crediting then-blacklisted writer Dalton Trumbo as the screenwriter. But in 1969, he found himself working with a director who had been anything but helpful to his Hollywood colleagues during the height of McCarthyism. Sadly, this team-up between Douglas and director Elia Kazan also had the unfortunate distinction of being one of the Greek-American filmmaker's most derided films.
"The Arrangement" currently has a 15% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which should tell you pretty much all you need to know about how this ill-fated drama was received upon release. The film is an adaptation of Kazan's own 1967 novel of the same name and follows LA advertising executive Evangelos Topouzoglou/Eddie Anderson (Douglas) as he endures a protracted nervous breakdown (which is what watching this incredible trailer feels like). Critics at the time were merciless with their condemnation of Kazan's film,...

Few types of movies sum up the 1990s quite like “dad thrillers.” A term popularized by the brilliant Max Read a few years ago, the dad thriller is a subgenre of thriller movies that was largely designed to appeal to older male viewers or otherwise featured thematic elements associated with that demographic. Yes, such movies often feature men being really good dads, but it’s about more than that. Dad thrillers were often closer to ’70s paranoia thrillers like Three Days of the Condor, which pitted crusaders of truth against staggering odds in a slow-burn narrative. They typically featured lawyers, law enforcement officers, military personnel, and dads in other thoroughly professional fields who were very good at their jobs. Many were based on books or otherwise inspired by the fictional and non-fictional texts dads of that generation loved to read. Some were theatrical hits but most of them found a home in living rooms everywhere.

Few directors reach the sort of stardom where their names are thrown on billboards. A Nolan or a Tarantino or a Peele become brands in and of themselves, while the other 99% bubble quietly under the surface; reliable journeymen, gallantly plugging away at the nuts and bolts of what used to be the mid-budget feature scene. These are the filmmakers who not only set the pace, but who change the very language of a genre too, consistently firing out exciting, crowd-pleasing, attention-grabbing stuff, year after year, decade after decade. Creative puppet masters living behind the scenes; their movies aren’t as stylistically loud, but their generation-spanning oeuvres are just as (if not more) legendary.

Francis Ford Coppolas unhinged conspiracy masterpiece The Conversation was first released in 1974. The film was riding on the wave of the cultural Zeitgeist at the time, which was highly critical of government corruption after Watergate, The Pentagon Papers, and the failure of the Vietnam War. Numerous films from the period captivated this critical and rebellious sentiment such as The Parallax View, Klute, All the Presidents Men, and Three Days of the Condor among others. But none of these films illustrated the effects of surveillance on the individual as thoroughly as The Conversation. This is a film about watching, and listening, and how that experience changes the protagonist.
