Robert Eggers reminds me of the babe. What babe? The babe with the power to finally, at long last, bring a sequel to Jim Henson‘s Labyrinth into the world! A day after announcing his Werwulf film project for Focus Features and Nosferatu coming to digital platforms, Robert Eggers confirms he’s writing and directing a Labyrinth sequel for TriStar Pictures. I am freaking the f**k out, friends. Labyrinth is one of my favorite films of all time, and the thought of Eggers taking the reins for a sequel to Jim Henson’s 1986 classic fantasy film is giving me life!
Plot details for Eggers’s Labyrinth sequel remain more mysterious than Jareth’s magnificent package, though sources say the film is a sequel, not a remake, to Henson’s timeless, puppet-populated masterpiece. Eggers will write the script with Sjón, his writing partner for 2022’s The Northman. The duo is...

Robert Picardo is an accomplished singer and actor whose career has lasted 45 years and shows no sign of slowing. He has been performing professionally since he was in college in the mid-1970s, appearing on stage in high-end productions like Leonard Bernstein's "Mass" and singing in his college a cappella choir. After college, he was recognized for his performance in a 1976 production of David Mamet's "Sexual Perversity in Chicago."
His movement to television was natural for a hard-working actor, starting with small roles in notable hit shows. He appeared on two episodes of "Kojak" in 1977 and has never had a "down" period since. He thereafter popped up in "Taxi," "Silver Spoons," "Alice," "Benson," "21 Jump Street," and 15 episodes of "The Wonder Years" as the hard-nosed Coach Cutlip, in addition to dozens of other TV shows that are too plentiful to list here. Warner Bros. is finally ready for the world to see The Alto Knights. The first trailer has just dropped for the long-delayed biographical crime movie about Italian-American mob bosses Vito Genovese and Frank Costello, both of whom will be played by Robert De Niro.
Unlike the 2015 biopic Legend, which saw Tom Hardy in the dual role of English gangster twins Reggie and Ron Kray, Genovese and Costello are not twins, nor are they related, making De Niro's casting as both somewhat of a stunt casting. Announced under the title Wise Guys, Warner Bros. had originally set a February 2024 release for the movie. However, in November 2023, the studio retitled Wise Guys to Alto Knights — the name of a popular mob club in New York City's Little Italy district and one of the haunts that Genovese often frequented with his lieutenants — and delayed the movie to November 2024. Warning: Contains spoilers for Dragon Ball Daima Episode #11Dragon Ball Daima has returned the franchise to its roots, reincorporating many of the elements that made the series so endearing as it followed Goku in his childhood years. The Demon Realm has been ripe for adventure, and the main cast's quest for the Dragon Balls is a faithfully nostalgic nod to the awe-inspiring wonder that defined the franchise before large-scale battles stole the focus. Most recently, in Dragon Ball Daima's Episode #11, titled, "Legend", the anime directly calls back to two of Akira Toriyama's earliest definitive works.
The first reference may have passed unnoticed by fans who are only familiar with Toriyama's work on Dragon Ball, referencing the series that preceded Goku's arrival in the pages of Shōnen Jump. The second, however, should have been recognizable for long-time Dragon Ball fans the moment Neva, the legendary Namekian elder, began singing...

The two back-door pilot episodes of NCIS: Los Angeles teased the first meeting between Gibbs and Macy, which may finally be shown onscreen for the first time. Special Agent Jethro Gibbs and Operations Manager Lara Macy worked together in the two-part pilot episode as Gibbs' team joined forces with the Los Angeles unit, Office of Special Projects (Osp), to investigate the murder of a marine that's connected to a terrorist cell. During this case, Gibbs and Macy unpack their complex and uneasy relationship in connection to an emotional part of Gibbs' past.
While the intro of the spin-off series NCIS: Los Angeles began to establish the history between the two NCIS cast members, the actress who portrayed Macy, Louise Lombard, never portrayed the character again, leading Macy to be killed offscreen in one of the best episodes of NCIS, season 7's "Patriot Down." For a long time, my interest in comic books lay purely in the characters themselves – until I read one Batman comic in particular, which taught me to understand how comics work as an art form, and how to recognize the near-invisible ways comic book creators move the reader’s eyes across the page.
My education came when I read the first volume of Batman: Black & White, specifically writer/artist Walter Simonson’s story “Legend,” which originally appeared in issue #2. The story features a mother telling her son a bedtime story of the Batman, a hero from the past who protected the city.
The story’s alt-future scenario makes for a fun romp, but what really floored me was the final page of Simonson’s piece. When the woman goes to her window and opines how she hopes Batman will return someday, she goes to her window, and Simonson shows...

To beat the Local Legend Rilai in Genshin Impact’s Natlan region, you will need to find its specific location and then choose a proper team comp to face them since the opponent can be a difficult one to topple. Local Legends were first introduced with Fontaine; they are characterized by stronger enemies found in predetermined areas of the map. Not only do they have larger Hp bars when compared to regular overworld opponents, but they also have improved skill sets. There are several Local Legends in Natlan in Genshin Impact, and more are occasionally added with map extensions.
Local Legends tend to be variations of regular enemies found in each region. In Fontaine, for instance, Ninianne of the Lake is a variation of a Tainted Water-Splitting Phantasm. The Local Legend Rilai, on the other hand, is a variation of an Iktomisaurus Warrior: Cryocrystal Cannon, a form of Sauroform Tribal Warriors,...

Once upon a time, Dune was directed by acclaimed Twin Peaks filmmaker David Lynch in 1984, and the result was one of the most infamous adaptations ever made. However, a much different timeline saw Ridley Scott, fresh off of the classic horror film Alien, adapt the iconic Frank Herbert novel. Of course, Scott instead went on to direct the greatest noir thriller of all time, Blade Runner, but fans of the Dune franchise have since wondered what a film from him would be like. The wait is finally over, as the script for the scrapped 1980 Dune adaptation has finally surfaced, and it sounds absolutely wild.

Nearly every culture tells similar folk tales about creepy old hags that practice witchcraft and prey on unsuspecting children, with this irrational fear being at the heart of several real-life tragedies that ended with innocent women being put to death. That’s why I find the idea of redemptive witchcraft stories like The Good Witch and even the ultra-successful Wicked adaptation so fascinating, as despite having been commodified as one of the cutesy mascots of the Halloween season, witches are still at the heart of many of our most frightening stories.
Naturally, this also extends to horror movies, with filmmakers depicting terrifying acts of witchcraft on screen since the very dawn of the medium. And with so many creepy broom-riders out there, we’ve decided to come up with a list celebrating six of the scariest witches in film. After all, there’s a lot more to these sinister spellcasters than black cats and candy-houses.

Ridley Scott's earliest films are now cult classics, but only Alien was a breakout hit when it was released in theaters. Scott reflected on Blade Runner's fumble at the box office.
Ridley Scott said Blade Runner and Alien would have been equally successful if not for one film critic's scathing feedback. "She destroyed me," he told Entertainment Weekly, referring to Pauline Kael, The New Yorker's legendary film critic who "destroyed Blade Runner in four pages."

I have written extensively about The Far Side, and one thing I can say for sure is that all roads seemingly lead back to "Cow Tools," one way or another; while I would argue it isn't the "most confusing" Far Side comic, though it is often cited as such, what I cannot dispute is that "Cow Tools" played an essential role in the success of Gary Larson's iconoclastic comic.
In a 2019 interview with The New York Times, Larson touched on the impact of "Cow Tools," on his career, specifically how the "controversy" surrounding the cartoon led to increased awareness of The Far Side among readers.
At the time "Cow Tools" first appeared in print, The Far Side was still only carried in a handful of newspapers. In the few years after, that number would grow exponentially – and I believe "Cow Tools" was a pivot point for the comic's popularity.

Forty years later and Ridley Scott is still determined to make films about abnormal topics — or at least rebuff whatever studio advice is being doled out.
Scott said during the Director’s Guild of America’s “Director’s Cut” podcast (via Entertainment Weekly) that his first four films — “The Duellists,” “Alien,” “Blade Runner,” and “Legend” — were plagued by bad marketing tactics and were misunderstood by studios and audiences upon release.

Ridley Scott reveals the advice he got as a young filmmaker following several high-profile disappointments. Now 87 years old, Scott has been making movies for nearly 50 years. After working in TV and commercials, Scott released his first movie in 1997 called The Duellists. The filmmaker followed up this film's lackluster theatrical run with his iconic sci-fi horror, Alien, in 1979, followed by the beloved Blade Runner in 1982, and Legend in 1985. Only Alien was a commercial success at the time.
During a recent discussion with Alien: Romulus director Fede Alvarez on the Director's Guild of America's The Director's Cut podcast (via EW), Scott reflects on these early-career disappointments. The filmmaker recalls getting some unwelcome advice from a studio executive at the time, who recommended that he make movies "about normal people" instead. Check out Scott's recollection of the encounter below:
"There's only one film worked out of all of that lot. But they're a pretty good first four movies.

Ridley Scott revealed on the Director’s Guild of America’s “Director’s Cut” podcast (via Entertainment Weekly) that he was criticized by a studio executive early in his career for not making movies about “normal people.” Scott’s directing career kicked off with his Cannes-winning historical drama “The Duellists,” followed by “Alien,” “Blade Runner” and the fantasy adventure “Legend.”
“There’s only one film worked out of all of that lot, but they’re a pretty good first four movies. So I knew I’m on the right track,” Scott said. “But somebody at one of the studios said to me, ‘Why don’t you do a film about normal people?’ I went, ‘What the fuck does that mean?’ Because no one’s normal unless you’re totally boring, right?”
While “Alien” and “Blade Runner” are considered science-fiction classics, they did not necessarily start out their runs that way.

Happy Thanksgiving from The B-Side! Here we talk about movie directors! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between.
Today, for our 150th (!) episode, we are thankful for Ridley Scott! As Gladiator II reigns supreme at the box office, our B-Sides today include Legend, Matchstick Men, Exodus: Gods and Kings, and The Last Duel. Our esteemed guest Maria Lewis––“best-selling author, screenwriter, film curator and pop culture etymologist currently based in Australia––is back!
Much is discussed over two-and-a-half glorious hours. Ridler’s pioneering Apple Ad; his recent breakneck pace as filmmaker; his movies being on Australian television constantly; and his production empire. Maria laments her experience watching Legend for the first time while Dan and Conor celebrate the film’s importance in their childhood. Ridley’s fascination with death comes up, as do the competing Christopher Columbus film...

This weekend sees the release of Ridley Scott’s Gladiator II, with many hailing it as one of the director’s best movies in recent years. So far, the box office take has been impressive, and yesterday we did an article about Ridley Scott’s best-ever director’s cuts. The reaction to that got us thinking about which Ridley Scott movie is the favorite of our readers. While many of us would say it’s a no-brainer to pick either Alien or Blade Runner, younger visitors to the site may feel different, with Gladiator perhaps a classic of the same stature to a younger generation of readers. Then again, some folks might prefer the deeper cuts, like Black Rain, Legend, or even Kingdom of Heaven, whose reputation was enhanced after its amazing director’s cut was released. So, with that in mind, take our poll below and let us know what your favorite is!

When Walt Disney Pictures' Wish arrived on movie screens in 2023, marketing materials heralded it as a celebration of the Disney Animation legacy, a movie loaded with Easter eggs for Disney fans to spot over the runtime. Fans who sat through the closing credits would also enjoy a montage of character portraits from every Disney animated movie to date, though keen eyes would spot one glaring omission. 1985's The Black Cauldron did not get a shout-out from Wish.
In the almost 40 years since hitting cinemas, The Black Cauldron has earned something of a reputation as Disney's blackest sheep a movie so embarrassing the company would rather pretend it doesn't exist at all. Indeed, the Disney theme parks only feature a handful of off-hand references to The Black Cauldron. Tourists will not spot the characters signing autographs in Fantasyland. September 13, 1996, was a dark day in the history of humanity. People around the world all echoed the same sentiment: They did it. They really killed Tupac. And this time, he didn’t get to walk it off.
Tupac Shakur [Credit: Death Row Records]
For the longest time, a conspiracy involving the 1995 Times Square shooting made the rapper paranoid about his life being on a short leash. Even the prison interview 2Pac gave after his sexual assault conviction began and ended on the same note – that if he was going to get killed, he wanted the world to know the truth first. Because in his heart, 2Pac believed there was a reason why people were after him:
Because if they can stop me, they can stop 30 more rappers before they even born. But there’s something else I understand now: If we really are saying rap is an art form, then we...

Ridley Scott's Blade Runner is one of the greatest science fiction movies of all time, and a widely hailed masterpiece that perfectly merged the themes and mood of film noir into a dystopian cyberpunk future. The movie achieved its status the hard way, with a rocky production and anemic early reception, only to bloom on home video and subsequent critical revision. Its cynical view of a corporate-dominated 21st century has outlasted the hypothetical 2019 timeline, and it feels as fresh and relevant today as it always has. A sequel, Blade Runner: 2049 updates the story, and has similarly engendered a good deal of debate among fans.
Multiple versions of the film have been released in an effort to address studio interference in the initial cut. All of them address heady issues concerning the nature of humanity, mixed with Frankenstein-like fears of artificial intelligence out of control. Many of its themes...

New month, new horror recommendations from Deep Cuts Rising. This installment features five selections reflecting the month of October 2024.
Regardless of how they came to be here, or what they’re about, these past movies can generally be considered overlooked, forgotten or unknown.
This month’s offerings include a Frankenstein anime adaptation, a K-Pop ghost story, and a pioneer of screenlife horror.
Pigs (1973)

It would be wrong to say Pigs‘ complicated release history is more interesting than the movie itself. Just don’t go into the movie expecting a simple story of sinister swine getting their fill of human flesh. Adjust your expectations as you watch Pigs for Hog Out Month.
Instead of pure hog horror, Pigs is far more concerned with the troubled interiority of its protagonist Lynn (Toni Lawrence). Something from her haunted past is making her uneasy. And the longer she...

Throughout his career, Tom Hardy has been known as an actor with great versatility, jumping from role to role and genre to genre with ease and effectiveness. He's known for big roles like Bane in The Dark Knight Rises, Eddie Brock in Venom or Max Rockatansky in Mad Max: Fury Road. Most will remember these hits or even his early roles in films like Bronson and Inception, but it's all the ones in between his commercial titles that are actually his greatest films.
Proving to be one of the most unique performers of the last decade, Tom Hardy is an actor whose talents have been both highly regarded and yet at times overlooked by the scale and popularity of some of his films. The Academy is not going to give Tom Hardy an Oscar for playing roles like Bane or Venom, even if his performances make those films better. However,...

Ridley Scotts 1985 fantasy epic Legend is heading to Tubi. Fans of the dark fantasy adventure will be able to watch a youthful Tom Cruise take on the mighty Tim Curry for free, and relive a movie that was a box office bomb on its release, but has since become a cult classic thanks to some iconic imagery and special effects.
In 1985, Ridley Scott had already tasted success with Alien, and he attempted to repeat that with Legend, a movie that continues to be as visually stunning now as it was almost 40 years ago. While it is almost unthinkable to imagine Cruise and Curry starring in a movie directed by Scott and the film not becoming a success, all three were in the early years of their careers, and the initial release in theaters barely made back the movies $25 million budget.

How would you define “locked in”? Sure, we know it’s a matter of staying focused on the task and letting nothing get in your way. But how would we describe that in movies and TV? What examples would you give? Well, in a recent social media trend, fans are putting their money on some of the biggest names in the history of entertainment.
Last week, X user jayjjalen asked followers to “define ‘locked in’”, resulting in millions of views and thousands of replies. The real catch here is that the “locked in” phase must have been consecutive and uninterrupted. In other words, if there was one slip-up via a box office bomb or creative flop, it doesn’t count – that is, they weren’t truly “locked in.”

Brian Helgeland's 2015 film Legend is a gritty crime thriller about the infamous British gangsters, Reggie and Ronald Kray. Based on a written biography, the film explores the brothers, both excellently played by Tom Hardy, their gruesome career, and crimes that ultimately landed them life imprisonment in 1969.
Tom Hardy was in for a challenging role, playing twin brothers with different personalities, often sharing scenes. However, it paid off, and he ultimately won three awards for his performance. Audiences can easily forget that the film is based on their lives as gangsters in London's criminal underworld. Their crimes, whilst dramatized for entertainment value, actually happened, and impacted countless lives in the process.

While the 1980s certainly saw the science fiction genre boom in popularity thanks to the blockbuster success of Star Wars, the fantasy genre experienced a similar renaissance. This was an era where studios were willing to invest in the extensive world building and practical effects needed to produce a memorable fantasy epic. The decade saw the release of numerous classics, including Conan the Barbarian, Dragonslayer, Legend, Clash of the Titans, and Willow, many of which remain cult hits to this day. Among the most memorable films of this era was 1986s Labyrinth, a more serious take on the genre from The Muppet Show creator Jim Henson. Although the film is best remembered for the memorable performance by David Bowie as the villainous Jareth, the Goblin King was originally a much more sinister character played by a different actor.

Prime Video has formally ordered The Greatest limited series, from executive producer Michael B. Jordan (The Creed franchise) and executive producer/showrunner Ben Watkins (Cross). Considered the first authorized scripted series about the life of Muhammad Ali done with access to his estate, The Greatest will star Jaalen Best (All American: Homecoming) as the boxing legend.
The series will feature the defining moments in Ali’s life and career — both in and out of the ring — that have been well documented as well as moments that took place outside the spotlight. The world remembers an icon, but The Greatest is about a man, a husband, a father, a brother, and a son.
It is produced by Michael B. Jordan’s Outlier Society, which has an overall deal with Amazon MGM Studios, Watkins’ Blue Monday Productions, Authentic Studios, Roc Nation, Polygram Entertainment, a Universal Music Group partner, and Grace: A Storytelling Company,...

While her novel Interview with the Vampire came out all the way back in 1976, it would take nearly 20 years for the adaptation to hit theaters with the movie of the same name...
