"It was a story that was definitely worth retelling. There are legions of fans out there that would love to see this story told." Those are the words of Ryan Reynolds speaking with RadioFree.com in 2005 about the "Amityville Horror" remake, which came about right as he was rocketing up Hollywood's A-list. "The first one, with all due respect to the people that were a part of it ... I just don't think it stood the test of time at all."
Whether or not one agrees with Reynolds' sentiment about 1979's "The Amityville Horror," which was inspired by an infamous true story, Hollywood was ready to sign on the dotted line based on this logic at the time. Not only was Reynolds a rising star,...

Cults are scary enough in real life. As a general rule, they infatuate your loved ones, drain their bank accounts, abuse them and make them think they like it, and in absolute worst cases -- think Jonestown and Heaven's Gate -- it all ends in mass death. Making that scarier for horror movies can be tough, but it usually involves actual supernatural powers. Horror movies involving cults offer them the one thing reality can't: legitimacy. In a fictional story, the dangerous demon or deity worshipped by the cultists can be real, and provably so.
Like actual cult involvement, a significant chunk of horror movies about cults end badly for their main characters. Real-world cult deprogramming takes a long time, and isn't cinematic, so in the movies, there's usually either a simpler solution, like killing the leader, or no solution at all. Satan is frequently involved, either explicitly or implicitly, in...

John Carpenter finally gets his long-deserved star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The iconic - and subversive - director of the landmark Halloween (1978) continues influencing modern horror creatives and putting money in studio pockets.
On April 3, 2025, Carpenter received a tremendous honor acknowledging his five roller-coaster decades in the film industry. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce certainly values his work. It awarded him a coveted place among the legends on Hollywood Blvd. Frequent Carpenter star Kurt Russell joined fellow alumnus from The Thing (1982), Keith David, to honor the director in front of the press.
The Hollywood Walk of Fame star secures John Carpenter's place in cinematic history. He's a legend whose contributions to the horror genre and overall film industry were (and are) significant. However, the path to a permanent place on the sidewalk in front of the Roosevelt Hotel proved rougher than Snake Plissken's Escape from New York (1981).

Remakes are often viewed with tremendous suspicion by moviegoers, especially when the film getting revisited is a bona-fide classic. This is because the rationale for most remakes is pure exploitation. The studio holds the rights to a property that once made it a gazillion dollars, and, because the money people have decided the original's laid fallow long enough, the time is right to splash a fresh coat of paint on it and see if a new generation of viewers will fork over cash to check out a gussied-up retread.
There have certainly been worthwhile remakes over the years, but those were made with tremendous care and purpose by people who had a passion for the material. For the most part, you wind up with lifeless dreck such as 2014's "RoboCop," 2005's "The Fog," and 2006's "The Omen".
Speaking of indistinguishable, what are we to make of 1998's "Psycho," the shot-for-shot...

Not all of the classic Universal Monsters were based on classic stories. While Frankenstein and Dracula came from the minds of Mary Shelley and Bram Stoker, The Wolfman, and previously Werewolf of London, was based on folklore dating back centuries rather than fiction. While the character has had a hard time coming back into the limelight with the disappointing Wolfman from 2010 and even more disappointing Wolf Man from 2025, the myth has done well for itself even while not being as in the public favor as the Zombie or Vampire. Those original films may not be based on books but that didn’t stop writers from creating their own stories or studios from adapting them. This includes the likes of Hammer Studios Curse of the Werewolf being adapted from The Werewolf of Paris and The Wolfen getting turned into the 1981 movie Wolfen. Speaking of 1981, there were two other rather small werewolf...

Iconic filmmaker John Carpenter is just as keen to get back into directing as his fans are to see another movie from him. The director recently chatted with Variety ahead of his upcoming Walk of Fame star ceremony (taking place April 3) and said he'd "love to direct again, given the right circumstances."
Carpenter has directed several classic horror movies, most notably with the 1978 slasher Halloween, but his remake of The Thing has become even more beloved than the original. Some of his other famous films include Vampires, The Fog, They Live, and Escape from New York. He last directed the supernatural thriller The Ward in 2010.
Over 15 years later, and we're still waiting to see what movie he picks to helm next. According to his recent comments to Variety, the main thing holding him back is that he doesn't want to be backed "into a budget anymore," noting that "it's too hard.

It’s now been 15 years since John Carpenter directed his last movie, 2010’s The Ward, but the horror master has been staying busy with music, comic books, and various other projects. Not long after he finally receives his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame this April, for starters, Carpenter is playing music live in both LA and NY, and he’s even agreed to score Bong Joon Ho’s new horror movie. But will Carpenter himself ever return to the director’s chair?
It’s a question the director of horror classics including Halloween, The Fog and The Thing has been asked many times over the years, and Variety is the latest outlet to pop the question.
John Carpenter’s response? Well, he’d have to find the right circumstances.
“Plans? I don’t know,” Carpenter answered when specifically asked if he has any plans to return to directing.

When it comes to the horror genre, few filmmakers have scared audiences quite like John Carpenter. With such classics as Halloween and The Fog under his belt, few horror filmmakers have a more impressive resume. For the last four decades, few films have had as much of a lasting impact on the horror genre as his 1982 remake of The Thing. It may have financially bombed upon release, but this claustrophobic endurance test has since become one of the most cherished and thought-provoking sci-fi horror films of all time. Now fans have a chance to relive the film’s nightmares as it's getting a 4K screening with a special killer guest.

Spinach is scarce in Popeye's Revenge. So is a cohesive plot and any form of shrewd execution. But the kills are brutal, the misogyny is ugly, and the plot is lost somewhere in the current vendetta to butcher some of history’s finest fairy tales and comic book characters. It began with director Rhys Frake-Waterfield, who is at the helm of the Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey films. Here, it's evident that screenwriter Harry Boxley was using the films he previously penned as horror foreplay. Popeye’s Revenge is a bloody mess, both figuratively and literally.
The executive producers of the Winnie-The-Pooh: Blood and Honey movies fuel this endeavor, which attempts to offer a brand-new and horrifying take on the classic character created by E.C. Seger nearly 100 years ago. Directed by William Stead (Children of the Night), the story finds a gaggle of teens trying to survive the "legend...

We’ve discussed John Carpenter on this channel as much or more than nearly any other director. Some of his movies, like The Thing, have gotten a different type of show appreciation via discussions on its behind the scenes in a Wtf, a comparison with its novella source material, and a look at what its legacy is in a Deconstructing video, amongst a few others. Looking at his catalogue, there is a wealth of stuff that is firmly in the horror realm from Christine to In the Mouth of Madness, Prince of Darkness to Halloween. While he has some movies that are outside that wheelhouse like the western homage Assault on Precinct 13 or Academy Award winning sci-fi drama Starman, Escape from New York is something special. In addition to being one of my favorite films of all time, full stop, it’s also sneaky in its ability to horrify. While...

By 1980, John Carpenter was already a name to watch in the horror world. Halloween (1978) had shattered expectations, proving that a low-budget slasher could become a box office behemoth. Carpenter was the kind of filmmaker who made Hollywood nervous – he worked fast, with limited resources, and still managed to terrify audiences in ways big studios couldn’t replicate. So, when his next horror film, The Fog, was announced, expectations were sky-high.
But The Fog wasn’t just another slasher. It was an eerie ghost story, heavily inspired by classic horror tales and seafaring folklore. Set in the sleepy coastal town of Antonio Bay, the film follows a group of residents—including a radio DJ (Adrienne Barbeau), a hitchhiker (Jamie Lee Curtis), and the town’s mayor (Janet Leigh)—as they uncover a dark secret: their town’s founders had betrayed and murdered a group of lepers a century earlier. Now, a ghostly mist has rolled in,...

The following reveals spoilers for Star Trek: Section 31 now streaming on Paramount+
Star Trek: Section 31 pulls a surprising cameo in its final scene, as Jamie Lee Curtis appears as the team's commander. The actor won huge accolades for her performance alongside Section 31 star, Michelle Yeoh, in Everything Everywhere All at Once. That included a pair of Oscars for the two: Yeoh for Best Actress and Curtis for Best Supporting Actress. The movie itself also won Best Picture.
The cameo feels almost preordained, and while it's always fun to see the veteran actor onscreen, few people could claim that her arrival was unexpected.
She gained fame as a “scream queen” over 40 years ago, but in the four decades since has proven her versatility in a range of genres. Award-winning activist, author and daughter of two film icons, Jamie Lee Curtis has built an impressive resume over several mediums. And 2022 was an especially wonderful year for her with an acclaimed performance in “Everything Everywhere All at Once” that brought her an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.
Curtis was born in Santa Monica on November 22, 1958 to actors Tony Curtis and Janet Leigh. After finishing school, she briefly pursued an education in law, but decided to follow in her parents’ footsteps instead. In 1977, she was given a small role in an episode of “Quincy M.E.,” followed by several more small parts and a role in the short-lived “Operation Petticoat,” based on the film which had starred her father. Jamie Lee Curtis has revisted her aerobics routine from the 1985 film Perfect. The iconic movie moment saw her play Jessie, a fitness instructor who becomes involved with Los Angeles reporter Adam, portrayed by John Travolta, when he sets out to write a story about gym culture. The movie, written and directed by James Bridges, became infamous for its high-energy aerobics scenes, which captured the fitness craze of the '80s.
Curtis appeared on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon to recreate her character's iconic aerobics scene, complete with exaggerated movements. Her routine took on a new humorous perspective with the added bonus of comedic gags, such as a pizza delivery, a surgery, and a champagne tower pour. Fallon took Travolta's place in this revived take, adding to the silliness of the parody. Check out the video below:

When fans think of Jamie Lee Curtis’ genre contributions, the conversation usually starts and ends with John Carpenter's Halloween. Understandably so, as Laurie Stroud is one of the greatest “final girls." However, the actress’ horror career extends well beyond her many battles with the dreaded boogeyman. The '80s saw Curtis star in The Fog and Terror Train. Yet arguably her most beloved slasher from that golden era is Prom Night. Now the classic film is streaming for free.

VFX artists share how a balance of practical and digital techniques employed in a classic John Carpenter and Kurt Russell feature created visuals that would fit alongside later technological developments. Carpenter is known for helming influential, genre-defining features, including Halloween, They Live, and The Fog. He is a celebrated director because of his lasting impact on the horror genre. Carpenter and Russell began their working relationship with an unlikely project in the form of Elvis, a 1979 TV movie where Russell portrayed the singer looking back on his life and career.
Carpenter and Russell's collaborations would continue throughout their careers, allowing the actor to play characters such as pilot and survivor R.J. Macready in The Thing and truck driver-turned-hero Jack Burton in Big Trouble in Little China. While there have been times when Russell wasn't always Carpenter's first choice, he nevertheless has struck up a great bond with the performer. And...

Jamie Lee Curtis is one of the most recognizable scream queens, establishing her presence as Laurie Strode in the Halloween franchise as well as appearing in 80s cult classics such as The Fog and Prom Night. Her characters are often headstrong and determined in the face of adversity, and that’s what makes them so compelling to root for. Although on the screen, Curtis’ performances are brave, in reality, she does not like being scared at all. In fact, one of the most iconic villains of the Disney renaissance period left her terrified.

There's no bigger name in horror than John Carpenter. The writer-director has made such classics as Halloween, The Fog, The Thing and They Live. However, not all his films are treated equally or as beloved. One of the best examples of this is Memoirs of an Invisible Man. The Chevy Chase-starring horror comedy was panned by critics and considered box office bomb when it was released in 1992. Over 30 years later, the narrative hasn't changed much from that initial cold reception. However, horror fans can give Memoirs of an Invisible Man a second chance as it's now streaming for free.

When it comes to the horror genre, there's arguably no director as beloved as John Carpenter. The filmmaker has made some of the best films of the genre, which have included Halloween, The Fog, They Live and The Thing. He also has a few very underrated gems, like In the Mouth of Madness and Prince of Darkness. However, even the best directors have one or two “bad” films. The center of that conversation for Carpenter is his 2001 Sci-Fi horror thriller Ghosts of Mars. It's one of the few films in Carpenter’s meaty filmography that hasn't come to 4K either, but that's about to change thanks to Scream Factory.

Fans of Patricia Cornwells Kay Scarpetta novels were delighted earlier this year when it was announced that theyd be turned into a series for Prime Video with Nicole Kidman in the lead, and Jamie Lee Curtis portraying her sister, Dorothy. Two seasons are now officially in development, and while filming has yet to begin, Kidman recently teased the thriller as being scarier than The Others, her 2001 horror hit that has long been lauded as one of the spookiest ghost stories ever told.
While the two are obviously very different projects, Kidman called the script for Scarpetta "terrifying" in a new interview with Vanity Fair. The series follows Chief Medical Examiner Kay Scarpetta as she returns to Virginia and resumes her former position with complex relationships, both personal and professional including her sister Dorothy with plenty of grudges and secrets to uncover. The 2005 remake of The Fog has had viewers rolling in since its arrival on Tubi, but even as a free to stream offering, the Rupert Wainwright directed remake of John Carpenters far superior 1980 movie is still a chore to get through. Every horror movie goes through the same rinse and repeat cycle every 20-30 years even some of the best movies of the 1980s were remakes of films from the 50s and 60s but trying to recapture the eerie atmosphere of Carpenters movie was a stretch too far, with the remake becoming one of the worst movie remakes ever.

John Carpenter is one of the most prolific and admired directors in film, creating cult classics and iconic films like Halloween, The Fog and Escape From New York. The creator has borrowed from classic cinema to inspire some of his best films, famously updating sci-fi classic The Thing From Another World. While sci-fi horror is still the director's primary genre, an earlier film by Carpenter took a classic Western story into a modern-day city.
John Carpenter is best known for the Halloween slasher franchise, but he has made a name for himself in just about every genre. Although his non-horror films often struggled at the box office, they've all continued on as cult hits among the director's fans, with some of his best having been remade, rebooted and continued. One lesser-known thriller Assault on Precinct 13 ranks among the best in its genre, and unexpectedly, it closely mirrors a classic Western film.
