Ngo oi nau man choi

Mabel Cheung often taints her otherwise standard Romantic comedy with some sort of social comment. In this cas it is the unavoidable clash of culture between rural and urban, between traditions and the impact of western education, and it works well as a backbone to the tentative love stories.

Plus the cast is doing an excellent job, great supporting roles from.the reliable teresa mo and anthony wong, but of course Chow Yun Fat tend to steal the show. Of course he shall be remembered forever for his monolithic roles in John Woo's, Ringo Lam's or Wong Jing's movies, but he should be given more praise for bringing back to the screen a comedic character based on dumb charisma and silly seduction, very much in the line of the best of Cary Grant. He does it to perfection in this movie.

This is not a bad romantic comedy from Hong Kong, which brought some laughs and chuckles. Chow Yun Fat stars as village headman Ng Shan-Shui, who has a clash with his girlfriend Firefly (Carol 'Do Do' Cheng). She had just returned from England, so her new independent and modern ways made a culture clash with the more rural and traditional thinking Shui. It's funny listening to the countryside Chinese dialect and the sometimes screwball conversations. The plot gets a little more intriguing when Firefly runs off to work in downtown Hong Kong, which results in more culture clashes when Shui follows suit.

There's a nice co-starring role by Teresa Mo, Firefly's confidant. Carina Lau makes a special appearance as Shui's new girlfriend Susan Chong, which I thought gave a rather sappy and annoying performance. Glad that Shui had better chemistry with Firefly. Their performances were the highlight of the movie and made quite a nice romantic duo. This film could have used more humorous moments, but overall, it wasn't a bad movie. The ending was pretty exciting as well.
