A critical movie in the Jack Ryan franchise, The Sum of All Fears, is now available on Paramount+. It's a must-watch before John Krasinski's new Jack Ryan film arrives.
Ben Affleck stars as a younger Jack Ryan in The Sum of All Fears. The film was a reboot of the franchise, based on Tom Clancy's 1991 novel of the same name. Affleck took over the lead role from Harrison Ford, who previously played Jack Ryan in 1992's Patriot Games and 1994's Clear and Present Danger. Morgan Freeman starred alongside Affleck as Dci William Cabot.

Julius Onah had to "pinch" himself when he was directing Harrison Ford in 'Captain America: Brave New World'.The 42-year-old filmmaker had been a huge fan of the 'Star Wars' legend for decades but while he was initially in awe of the 82-year-old actor, he soon found he was open to collaboration and was keen to "feel directed and be directed".He told The Hollywood Reporter: "I’m originally from Nigeria, and I grew up traveling around the world, but when I first moved to America at the age of 10, the second movie I ever saw in theaters was 'Clear and Present Danger'. "And so when I first was interacting with Harrison and went over to his place, you definitely have those pinch yourself moments, but he wanted to collaborate. He wanted to figure out his character. He wanted to feel directed and be directed. "So all...

Paramount's Jack Ryan reboot movie, The Sum of All Fears, is climbing the Netflix charts and currently sits at number four. The film was meant to relaunch the Ryanverse with a younger cast, and featured Ben Affleck as the famous CIA analyst. The cast was stacked, with Morgan Freeman as Dci William Cabot, James Cromwell as President Fowler, Phillip Baker Hall as Defense Secretary Becker, and Liev Schrieber as fan-favorite John Clark.
Phil Alden Robinson (The Field of Dreams) directed The Sum of All Fears, and it opened on May 31, 2002, not long after 9/11. The film follows Ryan as he tries to stop nuclear war from breaking out between the United States and Russia, following a nuclear bomb going off in Baltimore. The villains are re-worked into Austrian neo-Nazis who want war to happen so they can create a new fascist state in Europe.

Few things are as arbitrary and unpredictable as the titles that reign over Netflix's weekly streaming charts. It certainly makes sense for new films or shows to climb up the popularity ladder, but oftentimes, titles of a dubious variety make it to Netflix's Top 10 list. Recent examples include the painfully mediocre Dylan Sprouse-starrer "Aftermath," or the barely interesting Cameron Diaz action comedy, "Back In Action." Then there are those that make a sudden resurgence on Netflix for no discernible reason. Such is the case with the 2002 spy thriller "The Sum of All Fears," which is currently sitting at #8 on this week's Top 10 Netflix movies list (via FlixPatrol).

As was evident from the first rumblings that he'd appear in the movie, the casting of Harrison Ford in Marvel Studios' "Captain America: Brave New World" is a savvy choice. For one thing, Ford makes for a darn decent replacement for the late William Hurt, who was the original actor to portray General-turned-Secretary Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross beginning in 2008's "The Incredible Hulk" and continuing through 2021's "Black Widow." Ford has the necessary gravitas, gruffness, temper, and fortitude to take on the role of a wartime general who becomes embroiled in the politics of a world increasingly beset by massive threats, both domestic and international. Really, the only element missing is Ross' signature mustache, perhaps nixed at Ford's request.
Of course, there's another reason why Ford's appearance in the movie is so apt, and that's because in "Brave New World," Ross has recently been elected as the President of the United States.

Captain America: Brave New World marks director Julius Onah's fourth time directing a feature-length project, putting the relatively unheralded filmmaker among some top Hollywood veterans. Onah credits one of those veterans, acclaimed actor Harrison Ford, for making his experience worthwhile, claiming that meeting him remains a "pinch me moment" he'll always cherish.
During an interview with Deadline, Onah delved into his collaboration with Ford on Brave New World as they carved out Ford's Marvel Cinematic Universe debut as U.S. President Thaddeus E. "Thunderbolt" Ross/Red Hulk. The Nigerian-American filmmaker recalled watching Ford in Indiana Jones films as a child and in Clear and Present Danger after moving to the U.S., never thinking he'd have the opportunity to work with someone like him on a major production.

Exclusive: It has been 30 years since Captain America: Brave New World director Julius Onah relocated from Nigeria to America, but he still remembers his first theatrical experience like it was yesterday. It was Harrison Ford in his iconic role as Jack Ryan in Clear and Present Danger, and Onah in particular hung onto the White House scene when Ford’s character refused to give a pass to a president whose blind desire for revenge backfired horribly.
Onah not only directed Ford playing the U.S. President in Captain America: Brave New World, he also provided the template for the iconic star to transform into a red Hulk.
“I’m still pinching myself,” Onah tells Deadline about Brave New World, which hits theaters globally today.
Mentored by Spike Lee as he matriculated at NYU, Onah relaunched Marvel’s Captain America franchise, this with Anthony Mackie stepping in for Chris Evans to hold the shield.

For Nigerian-American director Julius Onah (“The Cloverfield Paradox”), entering the MCU with “Captain Marvel: Brave New World” provided the opportunity to make a paranoid thriller, one in which Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson, the new, untraditional Captain America, must stop a global threat involving the powerful substance adamantium.
However, Onah was especially attracted to exploring Harrison Ford’s Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, in many ways the driving force of “Brave New World.” He’s the newly elected President of the United States, who wants to reform his extreme militaristic reputation and obsession with hunting Hulks, who becomes what he hates when he transforms into Red Hulk.
”When we meet him in the story, he’s estranged from his daughter, Betty [Liv Tyler],” Onah told IndieWire. “Yet now he’s trying to be an elder statesman, he’s trying to be a diplomat, he wants to turn a new leaf. And...

Director Julius Onah had big shoes to fill with the next Captain America movie, as the previous two movies in the franchise, Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War, were critically lauded for their portrayal of Steve Rogers. Now, with Sam Wilson taking on the shield, Onah has jumped on board to tell this story, which he has described as a paranoid thriller within a superhero movie. Captain America: Brave NewWorld follows Wilson's Captain America as he finds himself at odds with newly-elected President Thaddeus Ross (Harrison Ford), and as it turns out, the actor playing the President had a huge impact on Onah's early childhood.

Since 1990's "The Hunt for Red October," Tom Clancy has been a frequent pick for adaptation on film and television. The late author's signature brand of technical espionage and cat-and-mouse geopolitics lent itself naturally to the big screen, and the success of "Red October" spawned a whole Clancy franchise.
As is often the case, though, the quality of these adaptations has wavered over the years, with some absolute highs and equally notable lows. This is especially true of the movies and series centering Jack Ryan, Clancy's frequent protagonist. The vast majority of Clancy screen adaptations have involved Jack Ryan, with five different actors playing him in major projects since Alec Baldwin first donned the CIA analyst's mantle in 1990. But how do these different versions stack up against each other? And which is definitively the best?

While the doctors were normally the stars of House, in season 6, episode 4, "The Tyrant," James Earl Jones plays a one-off character that stole the episode and changed the course of the entire show. House had many actors make cameo appearances, and Jones played a character that was completely against type. Jones' character was President Dibala of an unnamed African country, who Dr. Allison Cameron (Jennifer Morrison) calls "one of the most repressive dictators in the world."
Dr. Robert Chase (Jesse Spencer) and Cameron are happily married and, while still part of the cast of House, they no longer work for House directly, but they are asked to help on Dibala's case. This causes Chase and Cameron a lot of ethical stress, because Dibala is accused of repressing an ethnic rebellion through genocide, and initially, Cameron finds treating him reprehensible but Chase finds it "interesting." It's often repeated that Harrison Ford hates "Star Wars" and Han Solo, the movie and role that made him a star. Ford himself leans into this, such as when he destroyed a Han Solo action figure on "The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon."
Even while first filming the original 1977 "Star Wars," Ford wasn't the biggest fan of George Lucas' script: He memorably exclaimed "George! You can type this s***, but you sure can't say it!" Granted, it seems less that Ford despises "Star Wars" and more that he's just unsentimental about it. For him, playing Han Solo was just a successful gig, nothing more, and he's frustrated by the superfans who insist on always beating the dead tauntaun.
That unsentimental approach showed itself in his comments about being in "Star Wars" to Vanity Fair: "'Star Wars' was a big success, so I was happy to come back and play Han Solo again,...

Tom Clancy's Super Spy has been gracing screens since 1990 when he was portrayed by Alec Baldwin in Clear and Present Danger, and each Jack Ryan movie and TV show since has seen the titular character with a different job. Plenty of actors have played Jack Ryan, with Harrison Ford, Ben Affleck, Chris Pine, and John Krasinski all having stepped into his combat boots. This has given audiences varying interpretations of this heroic and complex character.
In all of his adventures, Jack Ryan took on many roles within the CIA, as well as the Marines, and various financial companies. John Krasinski's time as Jack Ryan might be over on the small screen, but it looks like he will reprise his role on the big screen in an upcoming feature film. Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan, often just referred to as Jack Ryan, premiered on Prime Video in August 2018 and featured John Krasinski as the title character, a former U.S. Marine officer and Afghanistan war veteran working as a financial analyst for the CIA. The series is based on Tom Clancy's popular book series and featured characters from across the Ryanverse, as fans call it. Jack Ryan ran for four seasons and concluded in July 2023, and was consistently one of Prime Video's best-performing series.

A Tribute to Harrison Ford: One of America’s Most Beloved Actors Leading Star Wars and Indiana Jones
Harrison Ford has been well-known for his performances in his action-driven films such as playing Indiana Jones in the ‘Indiana Jones saga’ and Han Solo in the ‘Star Wars’ films. They have been two successful franchises that had given Harrison some other opportunities for other action roles. However, he also proved to be a wonderful actor by even starring in experimental sci-fi movies such as Ridley Scott’s 1982 sci-fi cult favorite ‘Blade Runner’ (1982). 1970s Harrison Ford was born on July 13th, 1942 in Chicago, Illinois. He attended Ripon College in the state of Wisconsin. He also took some minor acting roles in film and TV. Despite the fact that he was trying to break into the entertainment industry, he was also a carpenter. Around the early 1970s, he landed a small part in George Lucas’ film ‘American Graffiti’ (1973). This was after the famous sci-fi director made his powerful debut film ‘Thx-1138,...

Legendary star of stage and screen James Earl Jones has passed away at the age of 93, it has been confirmed. The Egot winning actor, whose inimitable baritone brought life to the likes of The Lion King's Mufasa and Star Wars villain Darth Vader, died this morning at his home in Dutchess County, New York, Jones’ representatives shared with Deadline.
Born in Arkabutla, Mississippi on 17 January, 1931 to Ruth and Robert Earl Jones, it may surprise you to learn that James Earl Jones — one of the great masters of oration across film, TV, and theatre — overcame great struggles to gain control of his voice as a child. Having moved from Mississippi to Michigan to live with his maternal grandparents at just 5 years of age, Jones grew up with a profound stutter, and has in the past gone on record describing how he was all but mute throughout primary and early secondary school.

Sad news: actor James Earl Jones has passed away at the age of 93, leaving one hell of a career behind him.
Ah, some sad news to report. The mighty, brilliant James Earl Jones has died, it’s been confirmed. An incredible actor across stage and screen, he was 93 years old.
His career spanned seven decades, and perhaps his most known role is one that people don’t see him as: Darth Vader. James Earl Jones memorably voiced the character rather than Dave Prowse (who did everything else). But then Jones had a voice that stood alone. Just listen to the authority and depth to his tones as Mufasa in The Lion King.
In front of the camera though, when we did get to see him? Well, watch him steal the end of Sneakers. Take the gravitas he lends to his role as Greer in Patriot Games and Clear And Present Danger.

Very sad news to report today as it has been confirmed that James Earl Jones has died at the age of 93. The actor is best known for providing the iconic voice of Darth Vader throughout the Star Wars franchise, but that’s really only scratching the surface of his incredible legacy. A huge loss.
For an actor known for his deep, commanding voice, it’s remarkable that he struggled with speaking at an early age. When he was just five years old, he was sent to live with his grandparents in Michigan. The experience was so traumatic that he developed a severe stutter that led to him refusing to speak. “I was a stutterer. I couldn’t talk,” Jones explained. “So my first year of school was my first mute year, and then those mute years continued until I got to high school.” The actor credited his English teacher, Donald Crouch,...

James Earl Jones, the prolific film, TV and theater actor whose resonant, unmistakable baritone was most widely known as the voice of “Star Wars” villain Darth Vader, died Monday morning at his home in Dutchess County, N.Y., his rep confirmed to Variety. He was 93.
After overcoming a profound stutter as a child, Jones established himself as one of the pioneering Black actors of his generation, amassing a bountiful and versatile career spanning over 60 years, from his debut on Broadway in 1958 at the Cort Theatre — renamed the James Earl Jones Theatre in 2022 — to his most recent performance in 2021’s “Coming 2 America.” For that film, Jones reprised his role as King Jaffe Joffer from the 1988 Eddie Murphy comedy “Coming to America” — one of several roles, along with Darth Vader, that Jones revisited, including the voice of King Mufasa in Disney’s animated feature “The Lion King” in 1994, the 1998 direct-to-video sequel and the 2019 remake,...

Pop quiz: who has the best voice in the history of movies? You’re dead wrong if your answer is anything other than James Earl Jones. Indeed, the classic, rich baritone is the defining voice of multiple generations, with him famously voicing the Sith Lord himself, Darth Vader, in the Star Wars franchise. In a much friendlier vein, he also voiced The Lion King himself, Mufasa, and when that movie was remade, even though no one else in the cast reprised their roles, there was never any doubt that only one man could voice the wise king. Plus, he famously voiced the iconic phrase, “This is CNN”. If Jones were only a voice actor, he’d be an indisputable icon.
Yet, there’s so much more to him than just his voice work. James Earl Jones is also one of the great modern character actors, making his film debut in...

Only a few things are certain in life: death, taxes, and that the MCU will continue to press on. 2023 was a rough year for the franchise juggernaut, with two of their three films underperforming. Yet 2024 seems to have seen a major bounce back as Deadpool & Wolverine has opened to $205 million over the three-day weekend, making it not only the biggest R-rated opening of all time but also the eighth highest-grossing opening weekend of all time. That same week, audiences got a sneak peek at the future of Marvel with their Hall H panel on July 27, 2024, which gave new insight into their upcoming films and also announced Robert Downey Jr.'s return to the franchise, just not as Iron Man.
With the MCU knee-deep in Phase 5, there are still many more huge movies coming soon that'll no doubt shake things up for the franchise. New characters are set to finally make their MCU debut,...

Rabbit-Proof Fence tells the true story of three mixed-race Aboriginal girls—Molly Craig, her sister Daisy Kadibill, and their cousin Gracie Fields—who, after being forcibly removed from their mothers in 1931, escaped from a government reeducation camp and embarked on a harrowing journey across the Australian Outback by way of the ‘rabbit-proof fence,’ which once stretched the length of Western Australia, to return to their families. The feature portrays a moment in Australian history now referred to as the Stolen Generations. Kenneth Branagh also stars in the film.

Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan has had an unusual history on screen. Alec Baldwin was the first actor to suit up as the CIA analyst, playing him in 1990's spectacular submarine thriller "The Hunt for Red October. That film would have theoretically served as the first of many Baldwin-as-Jack-Ryan films, but the actor was overshadowed by Sean Connery in that movie, and negotiations with Paramount Pictures for Baldwin to return in a sequel got so testy that the studio ultimately replaced him with Harrison Ford in 1992's "Patriot Games." For those who have never seen "Patriot Games," it's the type of movie where a guy sternly says "get me hostage rescue at Quantico, now!" into a phone. We're talking top-tier 1990s Dad Cinema, here.
In the summer of 1988, two years before "The Hunt for Red October" hit screens, Paramount had paid a reported $450,000 for the rights to author Tom Clancy...

Who says 1994 was a classic year for cinema? Netflix begins today to make that argument, curating a release of 17 films that turned 30 this year. The streamer has its list below. I have mine, and with the exception of the seminal Farrelly Brothers-directed Dumb & Dumber with Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels, and Luc Besson’s Leon: The Professional, the film that stars Jean Reno and a sinister Gary Oldman and introduced the world to the outsized talent Natalie Portman, and maybe Ron Howard’s The Paper, there’s a lot missing. How about Forrest Gump, The Shawshank Redemption, Pulp Fiction, The Lion King, Priscilla Queen of the Desert, Clear and Present Danger, Sicario, Four Weddings and a Funeral, Interview With the Vampire, Speed, Ed Wood, and the other two films in a starmaking year for Jim Carrey, Ace Ventura: Pet Detective and The Mask. Tom Clancy's first Jack Ryan novel was "The Hunt for Red October," a 1984 thriller about a Russian submarine and the CIA Agent, Ryan, who has to assure the U.S. military brass that it might have a friendly Russian defector on board. Jack Ryan worked for the CIA, was a former Marine, and had previously been both a stockbroker and a history professor. He wasn't so much an action hero as a nerdy guy in a suit who could engage in action should the situation call for it. In Clancy's books, Jack Ryan would eventually become president. The Jack Ryan novels became seminal airport reading for a generation, and Clancy authored or co-authored 14 of them before his death in 2013. After Clancy's death, other authors perpetuated the character, and even expanded the series to be about Ryan's son, Jack, Jr. All told, there are 36 novels in the Ryanverse, with...

Tom Bower, the veteran character actor best known for prominent turns on The Waltons and in Die Hard 2, has died. A family member confirmed the news to Deadline’s sister publication The Hollywood Reporter. He was 86.
Bower never had what one might call a “breakout” part, but he was an actor one recognized from, well, everywhere. His more than 180 screen credits include appearances on The Rockford Files, Lou Grant, Quincy M.E., Miami Vice, Hill Street Blues, NYPD Blue, The X-Files, Law & Order and many other TV staples of the ’70s, ’80s, ’90s and early 2000s.
And he kept on working. In the past 15 years, Bower was on Ray Donovan, Bosch, Grey’s Anatomy, Criminal Minds, The Office and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. He also played the father of Bob Odenkirk’s character on Lucky Hank and had a part in Vince Gilligan’s El Camino, A Breaking Bad Movie.

Thora Birch has been performing in Hollywood since she was just a tiny tyke, famously playing Dani Dennison in the cult Halloween classic "Hocus Pocus," where she becomes the target of the malevolent Sanderson sisters. But although one of her most memorable roles came in 1993, when she was just 11 years old, that was far from the end of her career as an actress. As the mixed critical response and lackluster box office for "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny" emphatically proves, they simply don't make 'em like "Raiders of the Lost Ark" anymore.
When Roger Ebert reviewed Steven Spielberg's action-adventure classic back in 1981, he opined that it played like "an anthology of the best parts from all the Saturday matinee serials ever made." As it happens, that was pretty much George Lucas' idea when he dreamt up Indiana Jones in the first place — and what an idea it was.
