Action icon Vin Diesel may now be known for the hugely successful Fast and Furious franchise, but there was a time when his name alone was not enough to sell an action picture. Transporting you back to 2008, Diesel led the science fiction action outing Babylon A.D., which sees the actor take on the role of a mercenary and a former Marine who is tasked with escorting a young woman across a post-apocalyptic wasteland. And this largely forgotten action outing is all set to stream for free.

Directed and co-written by Mathieu Kassovitz, and based on the 1999 novel “Babylon Babies” by Maurice Georges Dantec, Babylon A.D. stars Vin Diesel alongside Mélanie Thierry, Michelle Yeoh, Lambert Wilson, Mark Strong, Jérôme Le Banner, Charlotte Rampling, and Gérard Depardieu. Action star Vin Diesel has quietly revealed the first footage from his upcoming (and long-awaited) sequel, Riddick 4. Officially titled Riddick: Furya, the sci-fi action follow-up will explore the mysterious origins of Diesel’s title character, who started life as a mysterious intergalactic convict way back in 2000’s Pitch Black. The lore has since greatly expanded, with Riddick: Furya expected to bring back on of Diesel’s best characters for a cinematic epic.

While the footage doesn’t show too much (you can check it out below), it does find Diesel back in the black goggles and sporting the kind of look of repressed rage that the character is known for. The divisive sci-fi movie that made Vin Diesel an action hero has now found a new streaming home. Released back in 2000, Pitch Black features a star-making turn from Diesel, and launched the now fan-favorite Riddick franchise, introducing Diesel as the mysterious Richard B. Riddick, a former soldier-turned-mercenary-turned-criminal who finds himself crash landing on an alien planet inhabited by monsters who thrive in the dark. Oh, and an eclipse is coming.

Directed by David Twohy and co-written by Twohy and brothers Ken and Jim Wheat, Pitch Black features Radha Mitchell, Cole Hauser, Claudia Black, and Keith David as some of the other crew members who come to rely on Diesel’s untrustworthy antihero to get them off the planet alive. Which he may just be able to do thanks to his “shine jobbed” eyes, which enable him to see in the dark. Pitch Black is now available to stream on Prime Video in the U.

Vin Diesel was bitten by the acting bug very early in his life, having acted in a New York stage production of "Dinosaur Door" at the age of seven. The way Diesel came to be involved in "Dinosaur Door" was kismet. It seems that he and a few buddies had broken into the theater to vandalize it, but were caught by the theater manager. Rather than calling the police, Diesel and friends were offered parts in the play, which they accepted. Diesel ended up studying writing and filmmaking in college.

Diesel made his motion picture debut in 1990, playing an unnamed orderly in the Robin Williams/Robert De Niro drama "Awakenings." He was 23. Also a burgeoning filmmaker, Diesel also wrote and directed the short film "Multi-Facial" in 1995, a film about his own multiracial background. In 1997, Diesel wrote, directed, and starred in the character-based crime movie "Strays," a film that played at the Sundance Film Festival.

There are few movie stars as synonymous with 2000s action cinema as Vin Diesel. While his tenure as Dominic Toretto will soon come to a doubtlessly glorious close in the eleventh and (supposedly) final installment of the Fast and Furious franchise, the world would be remiss to forget his pre-Fast turn in the Riddick films. Pitch Black, the first of three to feature the character, gave Diesel and writer/director David Twohy a gritty and dusty sandbox to play in.

Riddick, the scene-stealing role in 2000's Pitch Black, which was released one year before the first Fast and the Furious movie had even sped onto the big screen.

After catching Stephen Spielberg's attention with 1997's Strays, Diesel got his first big-budget movie role in Saving Private Ryan. Then, he voiced the title character in The Iron Giant and co-starred with Giovanni Ribisi in Boiler Room. But Pitch Black, which still had Diesel as a supporting actor, allowed him to dive into a truly unique, layered character and make him his own.

David Twohy’s Riddick 4: Furya, the latest chapter in the Vin Diesel-starring Riddick saga, has been awarded €2m in production support by Germany’s Fff Bayern fund for international feature films and series. It is the maximum amount that can be awarded to a single project.

Most of the principal photography will take place at the Penzing Studios in Bavaria, with further filming taking place in Spain and the UK.

Now, its not entirely clear what Diesel is referring to here, but with modern blockbuster moviemaking now dominated by sequels, prequels, and shared universes, it is certainly possible (even likely) that the Fast and Furious lead is planning to expand the world of Riddick with further installments and spin-off projects. After all, as fans of Riddick will know, there is plenty of lore still to be mined in the name of a "Riddick Cinematic Universe."

Now that Vin Diesel has pretty much turned Fast & Furious Dominic Toretto into a full-blown superhero, Im less excited about his true sci-fi hero, Riddick. Diesel is currently hard at work on a fourth Riddick movie, Riddick: Furya, which has been in various stages of development for over a decade now. David Twohy, the writer-director behind the first three films, has once again penned the script and will once again direct the project. Theres no confirmed release date for Riddick: Furya, but Diesel has teased that itll explore Riddicks origin story.

Ive always thought it was really cool that Diesel leveraged Universals desire to have him make a cameo appearance in The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift to score the rights to the Riddick character. Although eleven years have passed since the release of the third film in the Riddick franchise, star Vin Diesel has always kept hope alive that he would someday be re-teaming with franchise mastermind David Twohy on another Riddick adventure. Riddick: Furya gets a new tease from Vin Diesel, who shares an image hyping a desert action sequence. The upcoming fourth installment in the Chronicles of Riddick franchise sees Diesel returning to the titular role once again and reteaming with director David Twohy. Diesel was never anyones idea of a leading man, but he managed to succeed with smaller roles in films like Saving Private Ryan and Boiler Room, indicating that he may have some room to grow. Although it would be The Fast and the Furious that would turn Diesel from being a character actor to an all-out action star in his own right, he managed to kick-start another franchise when he appeared as the outer space criminal Richard B. Riddick in the surprise 2000 hit science fiction horror thriller Pitch Black. Although Pitch Black was a moderately successful cult hit that filled the space horror void that had been left vacant by the original Alien, its sequel, The Chronicles of Riddick, is an absurdly ambitious space opera that verges on being completely campy.

Exclusive: Tennessee-based Showdog Studio has signed with Gersh for representation in all areas, as it adds five projects to its production and development slate.

The five projects include animated feature Baby on Board (slated to deliver in early 2025), the live-action feature The 442, scripted drama series Plan B and Sweet Toxins and nonfiction series Spec Ops Boss.

Riddick: Furya gets a new tease from Vin Diesel, with the actor sharing a new behind-the-scenes video from set. After first playing the character of Riddick in 2000, Diesel would reprise his role for two Chronicles of Riddick franchise sequels in 2004 and 2013. Now, the actor is set to reunite with franchise director David Twohy for the upcoming Riddick: Furya, a film that will see the titular character returning to his home world.
