Action icon Vin Diesel may now be known for the hugely successful Fast and Furious franchise, but there was a time when his name alone was not enough to sell an action picture. Transporting you back to 2008, Diesel led the science fiction action outing Babylon A.D., which sees the actor take on the role of a mercenary and a former Marine who is tasked with escorting a young woman across a post-apocalyptic wasteland. And this largely forgotten action outing is all set to stream for free.
Directed and co-written by Mathieu Kassovitz, and based on the 1999 novel “Babylon Babies” by Maurice Georges Dantec, Babylon A.D. stars Vin Diesel alongside Mélanie Thierry, Michelle Yeoh, Lambert Wilson, Mark Strong, Jérôme Le Banner, Charlotte Rampling, and Gérard Depardieu. The sci-fi action flick is set to hit free streaming platform Tubi on April 1, and you can check out the official synopsis below.

Action star Vin Diesel has quietly revealed the first footage from his upcoming (and long-awaited) sequel, Riddick 4. Officially titled Riddick: Furya, the sci-fi action follow-up will explore the mysterious origins of Diesel’s title character, who started life as a mysterious intergalactic convict way back in 2000’s Pitch Black. The lore has since greatly expanded, with Riddick: Furya expected to bring back on of Diesel’s best characters for a cinematic epic.
While the footage doesn’t show too much (you can check it out below), it does find Diesel back in the black goggles and sporting the kind of look of repressed rage that the character is known for. Set to be written and directed once again by David Twohy alongside creators Jim and Ken Wheat, the sci-fi action sequel not only finds Diesel as the lead but also as a producer on the project. Audiences have been wildly fascinated with the horror/thriller genre in sci-fi settings since director Ridley Scott's groundbreaking Alien (1979), starring Sigourney Weaver. 7 years later, Weaver earned her first Oscar nomination for the sequel Aliens (1986) for Best Actress, further legitimizing the horror/thriller genre in sci-fi themed storytelling in space.
Today, with total box office receipts of over $800M in 2024, this genre could be a way for Star Trek creators to attract new horror fans seeking novel ways to be frightened! We love to be scared out of our seats, and Hollywood has fueled our fascination with feeding our fears for decades. In the summer of 2001, Vin Diesel became a household name. The Fast and the Furious, which was designed as little more than a modestly budgeted action programmer, became the breakout hit of that summer, capturing the cultural zeitgeist in a way that’s hard to reverse engineer. It was a major hit with the youth market. Diesel, with his bald head, muscular physique and unforgettable voice became the decade’s first icon, with audiences fascinated by his macho vibe, ambiguous ethnicity, and signature look. Studios didn’t waste any time building a star vehicle around him, with Sony making him the lead of a new super spy franchise they hoped would give James Bond some serious competition. The film, XXX, was among the most hyped films of the decade, with many thinking it would be such a phenomenon that it would make the Bond franchise irrelevant. That didn’t quite happen,...

Image Source: Universal Pictures Home Entertainment Released 25 years ago, the movie Pitch Black that first introduced audiences to Richard B. Riddick, who has since been featured in two sequels — The Chronicles of Riddick and Riddick — and will be seen once again in Riddick: Furya, which started filming last summer. Aside from the Fast & Furious franchise, it’s the live-action role Vin Diesel has played the most, and it’s also one of the roles that’s been the most meaningful to him. When he was cast in Pitch Black, he wasn’t yet a Hollywood superstar; at the time the film was released, he told us he understood he probably wasn’t anybody’s first choice for the film, so he had to fight hard for it. The divisive sci-fi movie that made Vin Diesel an action hero has now found a new streaming home. Released back in 2000, Pitch Black features a star-making turn from Diesel, and launched the now fan-favorite Riddick franchise, introducing Diesel as the mysterious Richard B. Riddick, a former soldier-turned-mercenary-turned-criminal who finds himself crash landing on an alien planet inhabited by monsters who thrive in the dark. Oh, and an eclipse is coming.
Directed by David Twohy and co-written by Twohy and brothers Ken and Jim Wheat, Pitch Black features Radha Mitchell, Cole Hauser, Claudia Black, and Keith David as some of the other crew members who come to rely on Diesel’s untrustworthy antihero to get them off the planet alive. Which he may just be able to do thanks to his “shine jobbed” eyes, which enable him to see in the dark. Pitch Black is now available to stream on Prime Video in the U.

Everything’s Coming Up Carrie!
January proved to be a busy, varied month on Horror Queers. We kicked off 2025 with a look at Sophia Takal’s examination of toxic friendships in Into the Dark: “New Year, New You” (listen), tackled Quentin Tarantino’s half of the Grindhouse double feature with Death Proof (listen), revisited George Waggner’s 1941 classic The Wolf Man (listen), then begged for Aylmer’s juice in Frank Henenlotter’s Brain Damage (listen).
To wrap up January, we’re taking Carrie White to prom in Brian De Palma‘s adaptation of Stephen King‘s debut novel, Carrie. The classic film about telekinesis follows timid, bullied Carrie (Sissy Spacek) struggling to fit in at high school and get out from under the thumb of her overbearing religious mother (Piper Laurie).
Unexpected kindness arrives courtesy of popular girl Sue Snell (Amy Irving), who volunteers her boyfriend Tommy (William Katt) to take Carrie to prom.

Vin Diesel was bitten by the acting bug very early in his life, having acted in a New York stage production of "Dinosaur Door" at the age of seven. The way Diesel came to be involved in "Dinosaur Door" was kismet. It seems that he and a few buddies had broken into the theater to vandalize it, but were caught by the theater manager. Rather than calling the police, Diesel and friends were offered parts in the play, which they accepted. Diesel ended up studying writing and filmmaking in college.
Diesel made his motion picture debut in 1990, playing an unnamed orderly in the Robin Williams/Robert De Niro drama "Awakenings." He was 23. Also a burgeoning filmmaker, Diesel also wrote and directed the short film "Multi-Facial" in 1995, a film about his own multiracial background. In 1997, Diesel wrote, directed, and starred in the character-based crime movie "Strays," a film that played at the Sundance Film Festival.

There are few movie stars as synonymous with 2000s action cinema as Vin Diesel. While his tenure as Dominic Toretto will soon come to a doubtlessly glorious close in the eleventh and (supposedly) final installment of the Fast and Furious franchise, the world would be remiss to forget his pre-Fast turn in the Riddick films. Pitch Black, the first of three to feature the character, gave Diesel and writer/director David Twohy a gritty and dusty sandbox to play in.

Blockbuster fans know that it's practically impossible not to associate Vin Diesel's name to the Fast & Furious saga anymore. Having starred in almost every installment of it, Diesel and his "fambly" have become the faces of the franchise. However, the action star is also the lead in another film saga that wildly differs from street racing. Back in the early aughts, Diesel starred in Pitch Black, which went on to become an accomplished franchise named after his character Riddick.

If you actually give it some thought, The Chronicles of Riddick is a truly fascinating science fiction series. The Chronicles of Riddick trilogy has a strong fan base and undoubtedly helped its main actor, Vin Diesel, establish himself as a proper action star. Hollywood has made sequels a core part of the success of key movie franchises since the film industry's beginning, with movies like Jaws, Star Wars, and Die Hard earning numerous continuations. Movie series go through rough spots, with genres like horror particularly experiencing incredibly weak entries, despite continuing on years after. Some franchises have the unfortunate distinction of ending on their worst entry, whether a planned trilogy that disappointed audiences with their finale or films so bad they tanked a series' future.
Seeing a franchise end on its weakest entry isn't always unexpected, and audiences have unfortunately been trained to lower expectations for the average sequel. These films can lose the respect of audiences for a variety of reasons, from losing their main cast and abandoning a core premise to bad direction and simply failing to deliver a satisfying ending to a saga. While no franchise is ever truly dead,...

Quick Links Riddick Was a Passion Project for Vin Diesel Vin Diesel Said He Would've Been 'Homeless' if Riddick Failed
Including his cameo in The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift, Vin Diesel has played the character Dominic Toretto a whopping nine times. And, yet, that's not the character from his filmography that he holds closest to his heart. It's actually Richard B. Riddick, the scene-stealing role in 2000's Pitch Black, which was released one year before the first Fast and the Furious movie had even sped onto the big screen.
After catching Stephen Spielberg's attention with 1997's Strays, Diesel got his first big-budget movie role in Saving Private Ryan. Then, he voiced the title character in The Iron Giant and co-starred with Giovanni Ribisi in Boiler Room. But Pitch Black, which still had Diesel as a supporting actor, allowed him to dive into a truly unique, layered character and make him his own.

A forgotten revenge thriller from 2004 made Yellowstone's Cole Hauser the lead over co-stars like Matthew McConaughey and Chris Rock. Now, its not entirely clear what Diesel is referring to here, but with modern blockbuster moviemaking now dominated by sequels, prequels, and shared universes, it is certainly possible (even likely) that the Fast and Furious lead is planning to expand the world of Riddick with further installments and spin-off projects. After all, as fans of Riddick will know, there is plenty of lore still to be mined in the name of a "Riddick Cinematic Universe."

Now that Vin Diesel has pretty much turned Fast & Furious Dominic Toretto into a full-blown superhero, Im less excited about his true sci-fi hero, Riddick. Diesel is currently hard at work on a fourth Riddick movie, Riddick: Furya, which has been in various stages of development for over a decade now. David Twohy, the writer-director behind the first three films, has once again penned the script and will once again direct the project. Theres no confirmed release date for Riddick: Furya, but Diesel has teased that itll explore Riddicks origin story.
Ive always thought it was really cool that Diesel leveraged Universals desire to have him make a cameo appearance in The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift to score the rights to the Riddick character. This has meant that Diesel has complete ownership of the Riddick franchise and, as a result, complete creative control of his big-screen outings.

Although eleven years have passed since the release of the third film in the Riddick franchise, star Vin Diesel has always kept hope alive that he would someday be re-teaming with franchise mastermind David Twohy on another Riddick adventure. Back in May, we learned that Riddick: Furya was scheduled to start filming on August 26th – and during the build-up to the start of production, Diesel has been sharing behind-the-scenes images and video on social media that show him getting back into character as Riddick. You can check them out at the bottom of this article.

That was followed by the epic The Chronicles of Riddick, which underperformed at the box office in 2004, so they reduced the scope for the third film, Riddick, which was released in 2013. The Chronicles of Riddick is a very interesting sci-fi franchise if you look at it. It never became a cult classic mainstream title, but The Chronicles of Riddick franchise has a solid fanbase, and the franchise as a whole definitely helped its star Vin Diesel in his career, establishing him as a star.
The franchise was created by brothers Ken and Jim Wheat and centers on the tales of the 28th-century antihero Riddick. Since the series’ launch in 2000, three full-length movies and one animated short have been released.
We have recently confirmed that Diesel will be returning to his character in the fourth feature film, Riddick: Furya, which began filming this month. The announcement that a new Riddick movie will continue the franchise was undoubtedly a fantastic one for fans, and in light of that, we have some first-look photos from the set of the movie for you to enjoy!

Vin Diesel may have had one of the strangest career trajectories out of the most significant action stars working today. Diesel was never anyones idea of a leading man, but he managed to succeed with smaller roles in films like Saving Private Ryan and Boiler Room, indicating that he may have some room to grow. Although it would be The Fast and the Furious that would turn Diesel from being a character actor to an all-out action star in his own right, he managed to kick-start another franchise when he appeared as the outer space criminal Richard B. Riddick in the surprise 2000 hit science fiction horror thriller Pitch Black. Although Pitch Black was a moderately successful cult hit that filled the space horror void that had been left vacant by the original Alien, its sequel, The Chronicles of Riddick, is an absurdly ambitious space opera that verges on being completely campy.

Cole Hauser, a hidden gem in Hollywood’s treasure chest, may have flown under the radar for a good decade, but has anyone really taken the time to appraise the facets of his career? From his breakout role in 1992’s School Ties to his magnetic draw in Yellowstone, it’s evident this actor carries a Midas touch, albeit one that’s been somewhat veiled from the A-list spotlight.
His acting journey continued through the ebbs and flows of Hollywood, where he plunged into the depths of genre classics like Pitch Black and took the wheel in action-packed 2 Fast 2 Furious. Despite a stint in the movies, Hauser has firmly established himself as the fan-favorite ranch foreman Rip Wheeler in Taylor Sheridan’s acclaimed Western TV show.

The Riddick movies may not have been critically acclaimed, but they gained a loyal fanbase and became cult classics in their own right. Each Riddick movie has its own strengths and builds a compelling world within the story's universe. While the Riddick movies can be enjoyed as standalone adventures, they are best experienced in the order in which they were released.
The Riddick movie franchise was a major stepping stone in Vin Diesel's career, but without consistency in the titling of the three installments, their viewing order is not immediately clear. Starting in the year 2000 with the sci-fi/horror film Pitch Black, the series quickly found its star in the form of its antihero, Richard Riddick (Diesel), and the franchise continued with additional movies. Though the Riddick movies have received mixed critical reactions, the series gained a loyal fanbase and its films became cult classics in their own right.

Vin Diesel is eager to get back behind the wheel for Fast X: Part 2, and to mark the occasion, he’s sharing a new video on social media that gives Fast fans a peek behind the curtain at the latest film in the franchise. Instead of teasing a new cast member, Diesel’s video previews an intriguing “setting” for the high-octane action film to take place. The location looks like something between Mad Max, Blade Runner, and Pitch Black, with dust billowing around a desolate terrain. The muted orange landscape includes a curious-looking structure with neon pink lighting. It’s a bizarre backdrop for a Fast & Furious film. Color me confused. Are the Fast family finally going to space? Like, more so than they did in F9: The Fast Saga.

Long before Vin Diesel shot to international stardom with the Fast & Furious franchise in 2001, the actor got a bizarre but memorable recruitment call from Steven Spielberg. Following his prolific work in the 1995 short drama Multi-Facial, and the 1997 feature film Strays, the actor surprisingly came under the radar of Hollywood’s most acclaimed filmmaker in 1998.

Fast 11 marks the end of Vin Diesel's time with Fast & Furious - Riddick 4: Furya will take its place as the next major franchise. Riddick: Furya is currently in pre-production and expected to release in 2027, right after Fast 11 ends the Fast & Furious series. Diesel, passionate about Riddick, aims for a successful new franchise after the underperformance of Fast 10 at the box office.
The return of a beloved Vin Diesel franchise is set to happen at the perfect time. Since the original The Fast and the Furious film was released in 2001, it has gradually become one of the most profitable movie franchises of all time, earning more than $7.4 billion at the worldwide box office over the source of its 10-part series. You might think that Vin Diesel would be mostly focused on finishing the Fast & Furious franchise at this point, with the reportedly last movie still sitting in the development garage. But it appears another of his recognizable characters has overtaken Dom Toretto in the race to screens – Richard B. Riddick. Riddick: Furya is now in line to shoot in August.
The Riddick character originated in 2000's Pitch Black, which saw him and a group of survivors of a crashed spaceship tackling bloodthirsty critters that hunt by night — as the planet they're stranded on is thrust into a long night by an eclipse. He was further explored by 2004's The Chronicles Of Riddick and 2013's Riddick.
Writer/director David Twohy, who has been on the Riddick journey alongside Diesel since the first movie, is back for Furya, which sees the character finally return to his home world, a place he barely remembers at this point.
