Studio Ghibli films by Hayao Miyazaki are known for their incredible complexity in both the plot and animation. The studio still creates hand-drawn animations that take years to create, and one such popular film is Howl’s Moving Castle.

After its release, the movie became the third highest-grossing film at the time and won several accolades. It was also nominated in the Best Animated Feature Film category of the 78th Academy Awards. Shangri-La Frontier is one of the newest anime to air in Fall 2023 on Crunchyroll, and it’s already off to an amazing start. The anime stars Rakuro Hizutome, a boy who makes a hobby out of playing notoriously terrible Vrmmo games so he can master them despite their various flaws and glitches. One day, Rakuro decides to play an actual good game for the first time in ages, the world-renowned Shangri-La Frontier, and through the avatar Sunraku, he finds himself ecstatic over getting to play a game without any flaws, especially since his experience with “trash games” allows him to play on a different level than the average player.

If Guillermo Del Toro's Pacific Rim can't get here soon enough for you, you can always go and revisit the classic kids TV show Johnny Sokko and His Flying Robot, about a little boy who commands a giant metal man to battle the gigantic monster forces of an evil alien emperor living beneath the sea. Brought to you by the very same Toei Company that would later go on to bring you the Power Rangers-inspiring Sentai Go Ranger series, Johnny Sokko and His Flying Robot has many of the stylistic trademarks of that far more well known successor but it plays them more in line with a spy show aimed at kids while still maintaining a surprising level of gunplay action. It's kitschy as all get out, but that's every bit the point of Johnny Sokko's charm.

One of the films that fans of action and sci-fi films are looking forward to in 2013 is Guillermo del Toro’s upcoming movie Pacific Rim, which chronicles the efforts of human-operated robots defending Earth against monsters from the deep. It’s a big budget action romp that pays tribute to Japanese sci-fi.

If you grew up watching Japanese monster movies, then you're going to like Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim preview.   Monsters versus giant robots what's not to like?

Guillermo del Toro has a genuine love of movies and the first preview definitely has nostalgia for classic monster movies like Godzilla and Johnny Sokko and His Flying Robot.  Many have called it Godzilla meets Transformers, which you can't help but think it.  However, everything from the warning siren to the large crowds running is a homage to the old rather than the new.  Unfortunately, they use a score we've heard a million times on action movies such as Battleship and Transformer.  Please don't recycle that score anymore trailer houses.

Super-8 Children’S Cancer Fundraiser Movie Madness is December 6th. Super-8 Movie Madness is teaming up with Roger’s Reels and The National Children’s Cancer Society for the next big show December 6th at The Way out Club. The cover charge is $4.00 and all of that money will be donated to the The National Children’s Cancer Society to help find a cure for cancer in kids.

Roger will be bringing by three 16mm prints from his collection to share. They are: The Little Rascals short A Lad And A Lamp, the episode Superman Gets Married from the ’50s Superman TV show starring George Reeves, and The Munsters episode “John Doe Munster”.
