The Nielsen Company and Billboard released its year-end report for the Canadian music industry this afternoon, one which saw Adele, Celine Dion, Gotye and Carly Rae Jepsen fare quite well according to their data. It also showed that sales overall are down slightly with digital sales increasing and physical sales decreasing. And if you're a jazz fan, well... 2012 wasn't a good year at all.
Overall the industry as a whole saw album sales in total decrease by two per cent. Digital track sales soared 21 per cent in 2012 over the previous year while physical sales dropped 12 per cent. Holiday season albums also didn't fare as well, dropping 12.2 per cent from 2011.
Nielsen reported only three genres saw album sales rise, with a 23 per cent increase in country album sales with moderate increases for alternative and metal categories. Jazz sales suffered the worst, plummeting by a staggering 43 per cent. Finally 2012 was also the...

June 25, 1982, was a good day for genre fans. Hell, that summer saw a spate of genre classics released, including "The Road Warrior," "Poltergeist," and "E.T." But June 25th in particular saw not only the release, as we discussed earlier today, of "Blade Runner," but also another legendary sci-fi picture, which like Ridley Scott's film, wasn't well-received at the time, and flopped at the box office, but went on to be enshrined in the geek hall of fame. No, it's not Barry Bostwyck vehicle "MegaForce," but John Carpenter's terrifying "The Thing," which despite the efforts of last year's poor retread/prequel, remains one of the greatest sci-fi/horrors ever made.
Technically a remake of Howard Hawks' well-loved 1951 "The Thing From Another World," which Carpenter pays tribute to in the opening moments, the new film took a very different approach, ramping up both the paranoia and the eye-popping physical effects,...

- At the Movies just got re-inserted into my television line-up: the return of A.O. Scott on At the Movies begins September 5th. Here is a mash-up of eight and 1/2 news items that we didn't have enough time to cover but are worth mentioning here for August 5th... 1. Down with the Bone The Lovely Bones trailer is up. Verdict: Could be worse. 2. Filmically Inclined 2009 MTV Music Video Awards noms worth mentioning: Johan Renck, Ray Tintori, Vern Moen, Chris Milk, Rciahrd Ayoade, Adria Petty, Taylor Cohen & Otto Arsenault, Walter Robot, Humble and Ferry Gouw. Check out coverage by The Playlist. 3. Film within a Film I'm not a fan of Inglourious Basterds, but Eli Roth's "Nation's Pride" faux trailer is the best thing in the marketing of Qt's film so far. 4. Casting is Sliced Up Robert De Niro, Jessica Alba, Michelle Rodriguez, Steven Seagal, Lindsay Lohan, Cheech Marin, Don Johnson and Jeff Fahey join Machete.

Have a question about gay male entertainment? Ask the Monkey! (Please include your city and state and/or country.)
Q: Are there any movies aimed at younger audiences that portray romance between gay couples? There are actually a lot of parents like myself who want to show their kids a movie with two people of the same sex falling in love in the fun way they show other kids’ movies. -- Marcy, Tacoma, Wa
A: Have you considered Another Gay Sequel: Gays Gone Wild!?
That’s a joke. Seriously. Gays Gone Wild is the raunchiest gay movie I’ve ever seen, and not in a good way.
"This might have been a mistake."
Anyway, I actually love this question. Nothing makes me quite as annoyed as the idea that “gay” is synonymous with “sex” while “heterosexual” is not.
In fact, I love this question so much that I wish I had a better answer.
