Eleven years have gone by since the release of a new entry in the Scary Movie horror parody series – but the franchise isn’t going to remain dormant for much longer. Back in April, it was announced that the Miramax label at Paramount, which is now operating under new boss Jonathan Glickman, had given the greenlight to a new Scary Movie sequel, with the plan being to get the film into theatres sometime in 2025. There’s a scene in John Singleton’s 1991 masterpiece, Boyz n the Hood, in which Laurence Fishburne, playing a man who goes by ‘Furious,’ delivers an impromptu sermon in front of a real estate billboard. He asks his curious onlookers, “Why is it that there’s a gunshop on almost every corner in this community?”
“Why?” an older resident asks.
“I’ll tell you why,” Furious replies. “The same reason that there’s a liquor store on almost every corner in the black community. Why? They want us to kill ourselves.”
They Cloned Tyrone, the directorial debut of Juel Taylor, who co-wrote the script for Creed II, and was one of a bevy of writers to take a crack at Space Jam: A New Legacy, poses similar questions to those asked by Furious, but takes a far more eccentric approach.

In most Bond movies, 007 had a short-lived dalliance with at least two or three different women, although the franchise relied on this trope a lot less in the Daniel Craig era. However, while critics have complained that many of 007’s so-called “Bond girls” are effectively interchangeable, sometimes, they can mean the difference between a good spy movie and a fatally flawed outing for the franchise.
While The Spy Who Loved Me’s original story focused entirely on the perspective of a Bond girl and didn’t even introduce 007 until the plot was almost over, the franchise never revisited this sort of risky storytelling. During the self-aware, campy Pierce Brosnan era,...

As far as 1990s and 2000s-era screen goddesses go, Denise Richards was probably the biggest of them all. From her role in Paul Verhoeven’s Starship Troopers to her iconic turn in Wild Things, Denise Richards was a formative crush for many of us who came of age in that era, and the image of Richards emerging from a swimming pool in Wild Things was enough to make many teenage pulses flutter. In this episode of What Happened to this Celebrity, we take a look at Richards’ rise to fame, from early roles in low-budget fare such as Tammy & the T-Rex to her eventual breakthrough to her controversial casting as nuclear physicist Dr. Christmas Jones in the James Bond epic The World is Not Enough and beyond.

Amazon Prime Video’s epic The Lord of the Rings series won’t arrive until 2022. Thankfully, with its list of new releases for November 2021, Amazon has a pretty major fantasy adaptation to hold us over.
The Wheel of Time is set to premiere on Nov. 19 and will bring Robert Jordan’s massive fantasy universe to life. Rosamund Pike stars as Moiraine, a powerful magic-user who guides five young people on a perilous journey around the world. One of them just might be the reincarnation of the Dragon, a powerful entity who could save the world…or destroy it.

Another music legend is gone as Dennis "Dee Tee" Thomas has reportedly passed away. A co-founder of the famous soul-funk group Kool & the Gang, Thomas died peacefully in his sleep in New Jersey on Saturday. He had just recently performed with Kool & the Gang at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles on July 4 and his death comes as a shock for fans. Thomas was 70 years old.
Thomas is best known for forming Kool & The Gang with the original group members in 1964 when they were first called the Jazziacs. Consisting of seven friends from school playing together, the group featured Thomas on saxophone, Robert "Kool" Bell on bass, Ronald Bell on keyboards, Robert "Spike" Mickens on trumpet, Ricky West on keyboards, George Brown on drums, and Charles Smith on guitar. Several name changes later, they officially became Kool & the Gang in 1969, debuting their first album under that name in 1970.

Comedian Chris Kattan may be best remembered as one half of the ridiculous Butabi Brothers from the seriously underrated A Night at the Roxbury, but the movie represents just one character out of dozens that he created for Saturday Night Live in the '90s. Even collaborating with such SNL greats as Will Ferrell, Molly Shannon, Tina Fey, and Amy Poehler, he always managed to stand out.

Renowned for his impressive physical comedy, he had an earnestness even when playing a weird goth kid like Azrael Abyss on the criminally funny "Goth Talk". Kattan appeared in numerous movies in the '00s like Corky Romano and Undercover Brother, but otherwise has led a relatively private life, leaving fans curious about what he's been up to.

Writer-producer Saladin K. Patterson has signed a new multi-year, overall deal with 20th Century Fox Television. We have a new trailer for Undercover Brother 2, which is probably an assortment of words nobody expected to find themselves reading today. Indeed, Universal Pictures has pulled something of a fast one on all of us by putting together this direct-to-video sequel to its 2001 predecessor rather quietly. Though, it seems to be a sequel mostly in name only, as we've got an entirely new cast, with Michael Jai White as our new titular hero.
The trailer is admittedly brief, clocking in at just 30 seconds, which is normally what we can expect from a TV spot. But this appears to be a very small budget, low-key affair. Though, for those familiar with the 2002 movie, many of the same elements are at play here. We've got the organization known as The Brotherhood, who are tasked with trying to take down The Man. It's all coated in 70s sheen and layers of cheese.

There's been something of a shake-up behind the scenes with Space Jam 2. LeBron James is still set to star in the movie alongside the Looney Tunes, but there's been a change in directors. Terrence Nance, who had originally been tapped to helm the long-awaited sequel, has vacated the project shortly after production got underway. Warner Bros. isn't skipping a beat though, as they've tapped Malcolm D. Lee, the filmmaker behind Girls Trip, to step in and take his place.
According to a new report, the parting of ways with Terrence Nance and Space Jam 2 was amicable. There is no indication that it was some overly dramatic production fiasco or anything along those lines. It isn't clear if the change-up will result in any sort of production delay. In any event, switching directors after filming has already gotten underway on a big movie is no small thing. That said, Malcolm D.

Director John Ridley is teaming up with producer Jason Blum and his Blumhouse Productions company for an adaptation of Ridley's superhero comic book The American Way. Ridley, who won an Oscar for writing 12 Years a Slave and created ABC's American Crime, is currently working on the screenplay adaptation, which will use superheroes to explore timely issues like race and integration. Ridley wrote the story with illustrator George Jeanty in what was a sequel to their 2007 graphic novel “The American Way,” in which a team of 1960s superheroes were created and called the Civil Defense Corps. The story focuses on Jason Fisher’s the New American, a black man given super strength but a limited pain threshold while the rest of the corps is torn apart by racism and murder.

“If I will it, I can have it all.” So goes the million-dollar motto for Ryan Pierce (Regina Hall), the bestselling author who centers Malcolm D. Lee’s sprawling, women-gone-wild comedy “Girls Trip.” Ryan’s aspirational thinking is meant to motivate her faithful followers, but it seems as though Lee himself was similarly inspired. Lee’s never had trouble crafting a confidently glossy film (we’ll pretend “Scary Movie 5” didn’t happen), although some of his endeavors (“Undercover Brother”) have been more memorable than others (“Welcome Home, Roscoe Jenkins”). “Girls Trip,” a raucous ode to African-American sisterhood, may be his most open-hearted effort since.

Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga have managed to pull in another big-name star for their upcoming version of the much-remade A Star Is Born. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Dave Chappelle has signed on to appear in the film, which stars Cooper and Gaga as Hollywood lovers whose careers take rapidly diverging paths.
It’s been a while since Chappelle last dipped into the world of feature films; outside of a small role in Spike Lee’s Chi-Raq in 2015, he hasn’t been credited for acting in a movie since 2002’s Undercover Brother. It’s not clear how Cooper—who’s also directing the movie, his first—managed to lure him in, but Chappelle will apparently be playing “Noodles,” a blues musician who’s an old friend of Cooper’s fading star. Meanwhile, Sam Elliott and Andrew Dice Clay are also set to star.

Macro, the new production and finance outfit launched by former WME partner Charles D. King, has hired producer and Imagine Entertainment veteran Kim Roth as president of production. She will oversee the slate of film and TV projects at the company that continues to ramp up since its launch earlier this year.
Macro recently closed its first round of funding, securing financing from lead investor Emerson Collective, Mnm Creative and others. King’s L.A.-based company, which is focused on content, distribution and engagement for black, Latino and multicultural audiences, has projects in the works from Ryan Coogler and Craig Brewer. It also just made a deal with Dope writer-director Rick Famuyiwa for a thriller about a seemingly unassuming but brilliant kid from New York’s projects who turns out to be the founder of a notorious hacker group.

He’s won both an Oscar and Emmy for his writing. Now John Ridley will get a shot to direct a big budget feature. Broad Green Pictures and Imagine Entertainment are partnering to produce Ridley’s script on the La Riots with the award-winning scribe set to work behind the camera.
Ridley won an Oscar for 12 Years a Slave and won an Emmy for American Crime. He does have some experience as a director with the biopic Jimi: All is by My Side (2013) as his last film. In addition, Ridley has directed numerous television episodes. However, it’s his writing talents that have earned him the most acclaim in Hollywood. Those writing credits include Three Kings (1999), Undercover Brother (2002) and Red Tails (2012). His first novel, Stray Dogs, was made into the Oliver Stone film U-Turn (1997).
According to Deadline, a major motion picture about the 1992 La Riots has been kicked around numerous studios for years.

When word came not long ago that a second reboot of "Shaft" was in the works at New Line, fans of the character bristled when it was suggested the tone of the new film would be more comedic in nature - conjuring up images of a straight out blaxploitation satire along "Black Dynamite" or "Undercover Brother" lines.
Not helping was the hiring of sitcom writers Kenya Barris ("Black-ish") and Alex Barnow ("The Goldbergs") to pen the script about the black private detective. Producer John Davis, who is behind the new Wesley Snipes-led NBC series "The Player" along with the new "Shaft" reboot, spoke with Collider at the Television Critics Association and says the film will very much be dramatic in nature albeit with some scattered lighter moments:
"[He's] just a great character. He's just the greatest badass. You start with an amazing character - a great badass with charisma. He's...
