Star Trek is boldly going in some cool new directions. At San Diego Comic-Con, the producers of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds announced that one of the most beloved characters from the original 1960s series is joining the crew.

Scotty, the engineering genius played by James Doohan, will be a regular part of the Strange New Worlds cast. But he won’t be played by Doohan – the role is going to British actor Martin Quinn. This makes Quinn the first Scottish actor to play Scotty, which is pretty neat.

Varada Sethu has officially joined “Doctor Who” Season 2 as the new companion of Ncuti Gatwa’s Doctor — but she won’t be replacing current companion Millie Gibson, as previously reported.

In January, rumors swirled that Gibson, who made her debut as companion Ruby Sunday in the sci-fi show’s Christmas special, would not be returning for Season 2 after Gatwa was spotted filming with Sethu. However, it seems the three will take on time and space together in the second season, which is currently in production and slated to debut in 2025 on Disney+ worldwide and on the BBC in the U.K.

Sethu is best known for her role as Cinta Kaz in Disney+’s “Star Wars” spinoff “Andor.” She has also appeared in “Jurassic World Dominion,” “Annika” and “Strike Back.”

In one of the few international distribution stories you’ll read this week not directly related to the London TV Screenings, Mediawan Rights has snapped up sales rights to the Swedish-Finnish series.

Mediawan will sell it outside of European streamer SkyShowtime’s footprint, which covers parts of mainland and Eastern Europe and Scandinavia, and second window rights within the operating territories.

Tony Gilroy’s live-action Cassian Andor prequel series Star Wars: Andor aired in late 2021 on Disney+. Set five years before 2016 movie Rogue One, it’s about the formation of the Rebel Alliance in opposition to the fascistic Galactic Empire. In it, 32-year-old Sethu plays Cinta Kaz, a member of a rebel cell operating on the planet Aldhani who works alongside her partner Vel Sartha, a cousin of Senator Mon Mothma.

Millie Gibson, who just weeks ago made her Doctor Who debut in the show’s Christmas special, will be replaced by Andor‘s Varada Sethu after one season.

The switch-up was first reported by the UK’s Daily Mail, and a source told our sister site Variety same. (TVLine has reached out to show reps for comment.)

The main cast members from the first two seasons are likely to return for Annika season 3, including Annika herself, her daughter Morgan, and other key characters. Former Netflix buyer Kai Finke has landed a senior role at burgeoning European streamer SkyShowtime, with programming chief Jon Farrar set to depart.

Finke, who left Netflix earlier this year, has been appointed chief content officer at the Comcast-Paramount joint venture SVoD platform.

He takes up the role after Farrar, who was appointed head of programming last year, decided to leave following a transition over the coming months.

SkyShowtime, the European streaming joint venture of Sky owner Comcast and Showtime owner Paramount Global, has appointed former Netflix executive Kai Finke as chief content officer, CEO Monty Sarhan unveiled on Monday.

Based in Amsterdam and reporting to Sarhan, Finke will lead the programming team, overseeing “the vast and growing scope of the department, following SkyShowtime’s entry into original programming this year,” the company said. He will be responsible for the streamer’s pipeline of partner studio entertainment, merchandising and scheduling, as well as its original programming slate and acquisitions.

Jon Farrar, a former BBC Studios executive who has served as head of programming at SkyShowtime, has decided to leave his role following a transition over the coming months, the company said.

SkyShowtime CEO Monty Sarhan led a market keynote at Cannes this afternoon, during which he shared the streamer’s forthcoming slate, including a series of original European-produced shows set to hit the streamer this year and into 2024.

The announced productions span Europe. In the Nordics, the streamer will debut Codename: Annika, its first original in the region. The Finnish-Swedish production, previously titled ID, is a crime-drama series that revolves around Finnish art-fraud investigator Emma, who goes undercover to infiltrate an auction house in Stockholm in order to investigate the firm’s connection to a notorious money launderer known as Blanko. Two years on, we’re still not over Nicola Walker’s shock departure from Unforgotten.

When Walker’s character Dci Cassie Stuart – the ITV crime drama’s much-loved lead detective – was involved in a car crash in the penultimate episode of Series Four in 2021, she was expected to miraculously pull through… and then didn’t. The brain injuries Cassie sustained in the side-on smash with a speeding car thief were too severe for her to recover from.

Fans watched in shock as Cassie’s family received the news in hospital, and colleague Di Sunny Khan ended the series by placing flowers on her grave, accompanied by a touching monologue. “She longest lives, who most to others gives, herself forgetting” read the inscription on the headstone.

Khan wasn’t the only one in mourning, Unforgotten’s fans also grieved the shock loss of the character.

Buzzfeed announced that Paul Ricci will join the company to lead unscripted television for BuzzFeed Studios. In the role, Ricci will oversee all unscripted television programming for the company’s Hollywood arm and entire portfolio of brands including BuzzFeed, Complex, Tasty and HuffPost. Ricci will report directly to the head of studios, Richard Alan Reid.

Ricci has more than 20 years of television experience within the entertainment industry, most recently co-founding development company BoomTown Content Co. In addition to Ricci’s hiring, BuzzFeed Studios will enter into a strategic development partnership with BoomTown Content Co. to develop new unscripted television projects. Recent projects include “The Kids Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon” on Peacock, “Who Wants To Be An Astronaut?” on Discovery and other projects in varying stages. BoomTown Content Co. will continue to be helmed by co-founder Mark Efman.

German filmmaker Lukas Nathrath’s debut feature One Last Evening, about a young couple who host a doomed farewell dinner for friends before moving to a new city, has won Locarno Pro’s First Look Award. The prize comes with €50,000 in post-production services from Swiss and Germany-based production house Cinegrell. This year’s First Look line-up showcased six upcoming movies from Germany. In further prizes, Le Film Français Award, offering advertising services worth €5,600, went to Arthur & Diana by Sara Summa. And the Kaiju Cinema Diffusion Prize, an award of €5,000 for the design of an international poster, went to Elaha by Milena Aboyan.
