Oh, Rotten Tomatoes. Love it or hate it, the site has played an instrumental role in helping films and television shows market their mass appeal in clear terms. And while a high score may signify a soulless flattening of art to court the most eyeballs possible, a perfect 100% score remains a rare badge of honor.
To appeal to the totality of critics across the ever-broadening spectrum that is the critical community (now inclusive of everyone from traditional journalists to powerful voices on social media), a show must be worth your attention for some reason. We certainly found that to be true when revisiting these 15 "perfect" seasons of TV (according to Rotten Tomatoes).

FX will submit 19 actors from The Bear for Emmy Awards consideration this year, Gold Derby has learned.
Two-time Best Comedy Actor winner Jeremy Allen White will again be submitted as the show’s lead actor and look for the hat-trick. Past Best Comedy Supporting Actress winner Ayo Edebiri, who jumped to the lead actress race last year, is again being submitted in Best Comedy Actress.
Four The Bear stars will be submitted in the Best Comedy Supporting Actor category, including two-time winner Ebon Moss-Bachrach, who joins White in looking for a third consecutive victory. The other actors submitted include 2024 nominee Lionel Boyce, 2023 guest acting nominee Oliver Platt, and Matty Matheson.
In the Best Comedy Supporting Actress category, 2024 winner Liza Colón-Zayas is back, alongside costars Abby Elliott and Molly Gordon.
FX also submitted several The Bear guest stars for consideration — no surprise considering the show won both comedy guest categories at last year’s Emmy Awards.

Big TV franchises often expand their universe by creating new shows from one popular hit. In this, shows like NCIS, Chicago Fire, and Criminal Minds have done exceptionally well, making spin-offs that fans loved. Not only these shows, but even Law & Order have done a remarkable job with shows like Svu and Organized Crime.
But in the midst of this, many forget that years ago, there was another Law & Order spin-off called Deadline. While it came out almost 25 years ago and had a lot of potential, it was canceled after just five episodes.

Now, with the crime drama genre at an all-time high, it makes perfect sense to bring back Deadline, which can easily give NBC a powerful new show to compete with Criminal Minds and NCIS.

When the fourth season of Hacks premieres this week, newly minted late-night talk show host Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) is going to run into two real-life TV superstars. Entertainment Weekly reports that Carol Burnett and Jimmy Kimmel will guest-star as themselves on the upcoming season of the hit HBO comedy. While Burnett will turn up to lend support to Vance, Kimmel's role on the series will be more adversarial.
Hacks' fourth season will center around comedy legend Vance finally getting her shot to headline a late-night talk show, with her on-and-off frenemy Ava Daniels (Hannah Einbinder) making herself its head writer via blackmail. In the season;s fourth episode, the pressure soon gets to Deborah, as she experiences her first-ever case of stage fright while in rehearsals for her first episode; she finds some support in the form of comedy veteran Burnett. As Smart says, Deborah wouldn't admit her vulnerability...

Earlier this year, JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray had the chance to watch Lurker, the boundary-pushing debut feature from writer/director Alex Russell, at the Sundance Film Festival. Describing the film as “a terrific blend of black comedy and psychological thriller” and “exactly the kind of movie I want to see when I hit Sundance,” Bumbray gave Lurker a 9/10 review that can be read at This Link. Now, it has been announced that film distributor Mubi (which is also a streaming service and production company) is planning to give Lurker a North American theatrical release on August 22nd. Hopefully we’ll be seeing a trailer for this one very soon.
Here’s the official synopsis: When a twenty-something retail clerk encounters a rising pop star, he takes the opportunity to edge his way into the in-crowd. But as the line between friend and fan blurs beyond recognition, access and proximity...

Hulu has been offering entertainment for the masses since it joined the streaming wars in March 2008. Like many streaming services, the platform aims to be a one-stop shop for people looking for nostalgic favorites and new content that they can watch on demand. However, Hulu still continues to strive in its mission of offering the best content possible, and that includes several Hulu Original series that stand out in the very crowded streaming landscape. Late last year, IndieWire hosted college students from Uc Berkeley at our Los Angeles offices for a presentation on the journalistic and educational content that their generation of film and TV professionals want to see. Afterwards, I chatted with a group of these informed and confident industry hopefuls and wanted to know what they found worth watching. “The Bear”? Maybe Sean Baker‘s soon-to-be Oscar-sweeper “Anora”? To my surprise, the only thing they’d all seen recently was the Max original film “Sweethearts.”
Surprising? At first, but then it was self evident: A film about teens returning home from college for the first time and recognizing the shifts that have taken place — how could it not appeal to exactly to this group of students?
That lesson repeated itself as social media blew up this weekend over the surprise $157 million domestic box-office opening for “A Minecraft Movie.” The trailers, marketing materials,...

The new season of Hacksis almost upon us, and amidst the drama of last season's shocking finale, there's only one question on the mind of a large portion of the show's fanbase: Will Ava and Deborah finally hook up? Series star Hannah Einbinder has some thoughts on the matter. Einbinder revealed that she "ships it" on a recent appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.
In a rowdy discussion of lesbian sex, the Super Bowl, and Einbinder's "f***-ass bob," host Stephen Colbert turned the discussion to the HBO comedy series' fans, who have loudly demanded that Einbinder's character, Ava, should get together with her mentor and employer, Jean Smart's Deborah. Einbinder shares their opinion, but she threw a bucket of cold water over the prospect of it actually happening:

Here's one you might not have "herd" about: Hugh Jackman is trading his Wolverine claws for Shepherding horns, as he is starring alongside Emma Thompson in Three Bags Full: A Sheep Detective Movie. The movie, as you may have guessed from its very specific title, is a detective story involving sheep, but since that is a slightly elusive and broad premise, the MCU actor appeared in a video segment at CinemaCon 2025 to provide a few more details about it. He also unveiled the first footage for the upcoming Amazon feature, which he describes as "a bit of a whodunit."

Disney executives delivered a tidy CinemaCon session in Las Vegas packed with sequels, reboots and spin-offs like Avatar: Fire & Ash, The Fantastic Four: First Steps, and Tron: Ares. Executivesnoted – unsurprisingly – that the studio and its labels has ranked number one in Hollywood for eight out of the past nine years and keeps films exclusively in cinemas longer than any of its rivals.
Judging from the steady stream of whoops and applause from the crowd of exhibitors at The Colosseum in Caesars Palace on Thursday, the formula works, and Disney’s appetite for revisiting familiar territory well into 2028 and beyond suits them well.

Gone, but not forgotten.
Linda Lavin died Dec. 29, 2024, due to complications from lung cancer. At the time of her death, the beloved 87-year-old actress had filmed seven of 10 episodes of Mid-Century Modern, Hulu's new comedy starring Nathan Lane, Matt Bomer, and Nathan Lee Graham as gay best friends who decide to live together in Palm Springs.
Lavin's role of Sybil Schneiderman, the mother of Bunny (Lane), has been receiving Emmy buzz following the sitcom's premiere on March 28. She currently ranks among the top 10 for Best Comedy Supporting Actress, according to the Gold Derby odds. To date, only 11 actresses have received posthumous Emmy nominations, so Lavin would be in rare company, indeed.
Here's a clip of one of Lavin's final scenes from Mid-Century Modern. Sybil's spicy side is in full display as she yells at a stranger on the phone who's trying to con her, with Lavin delivering perfect comedic timing.

Jeremy Allen White has been a rising star for many years, but his recent performance has put him in the spotlight. He is widely recognized for his intense and emotionally tormented role of chef Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto in The Bear. However, White’s journey to stardom didn’t start in the chaotic kitchen.
His first big role was in the series Shameless as Lip Gallagher, where he played the role of a street-smart yet troubled young guy. He showcased his talent for more than a decade in the 11-season series. Beyond Shameless, he displayed his acting in After Everything, where he played a young man battling cancer and navigating his love life.

White’s ability to bring realism to his roles and convey depth has made him one of Hollywood’s favorites long before his role as Carmy.

After 20 years in the business, there are a few things that Will Poulter has noticed about his public perception, and they’ve been coming up a lot lately. The first is that few people can accept the fact that he really is British. When he appeared in a surprise guest role on season two of The Bear as the soft-spoken and heavily tattooed English pastry chef Luca, his West London accent was so authentic, nobody believed it was real. He remembers getting a review in which the critic wrote “Will Poulter does his best attempt at a British accent …”
“People are also commenting on my height,” he goes on, referencing the second thing the public gets wrong about him. “Everyone says, ‘You’re taller than I thought you’d be.’ I never know what to say — I grew up short, and it very much formed my entire personality. So, I...

Amazon MGM Studios started its inaugural CinemaCon presentation with a bang: the first trailer for Project Hail Mary, a new science-fiction feature from directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller with Ryan Gosling in the lead role.
The movie is based on the 2021 novel by Andy Weir (The Martian) with a script from Drew Goddard. As revealed in the trailer — and likely familiar to anyone who has read Weir’s best-selling book — Gosling stars as Ryland Grace, a schoolteacher-turned-astronaut sent on a longshot mission to save the planet as the sun begins to die. Ryland, the lone survivor of the trip, eventually comes face-to-face with an alien who similarly wants to save the universe.
The trailer, set to Harry Styles’s “Sign of the Times,” showcased Lord and Miller’s bold vision and blended science-fiction spectacle and future dread straight out of Interstellar with Ridley Scott's The Martian—not a...

Fantastic Four: First Steps is poised to be one of this summer's biggest blockbusters, and every movie fan knows that a big blockbuster needs snacks. Marvel has us covered as the design for First Steps' popcorn bucket has just been unveiled, although we're in for a Grimm experience. The popcorn bucket has been modeled after Marvel's first family's geologically challenged Ben Grimm, as fans can take their very own The Thing home with them once the credits roll. In the upcoming movie, The Bear's Ebon Moss-Bachrach plays Ben Grimm/The Thing, alongside Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm, and Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm.

Hollywood’s musical biopic fever is, once again, in full swing. Buzz has never been louder for Sam Mendes’s ambitious Fab Four biopic – a quartet of films from the perspective of each Beatle – even with the release date still being three years away. Pink goes good with green, but it might be pink versus green at the Emmys.
With confirmation that Cynthia Erivo's appearance as quintuplets is in the Season 2 premiere of Poker Face, that means the actress could battle her Wicked bestie Ariana Grande for the Best Comedy Guest Actress Emmy. Grande is eligible for her hosting stint on Saturday Night Live in October to promote Wicked.
Before we get too ahead of ourselves, they have to get in first. While the guest categories are not in Gold Derby's predictions center yet, comedy is loaded with contenders. Five of last year's six comedy guest actress nominees could be nominated again: The Bear's Olivia Colman and Jamie Lee Curtis (who won), Hacks' Kaitlin Olson, Only Murders in the Building's Da'Vine Joy Randolph, and SNL's Maya Rudolph (a two-time category champ). Few cinematic tools are used as often — and as badly — as the oner. Also known as a long take or a one shot, a oner is pretty much exactly what it sounds like: One shot that goes on for several minutes, sometimes encompassing an entire scene or (in particularly showy films) multiple scenes. Even though it’s ostensibly the absence of trickery, long takes are difficult to pull off, and sometimes are done purely for the sake of being showy rather than them being particularly necessary. But when a long take is justified, and done well, it can be one of the most thrilling things to experience onscreen.
In the early days of cinema, very long takes were relatively rare, as most directors relied on the cinematic foundation of shot-reverse-shot editing to tell stories. One of the earliest examples comes from “The Stranger,” a 1946 thriller directed by Orson Welles. Welles...

With its gripping plot, powerhouse performances, and bone-chilling moments, it’s no surprise that viewers are hooked. But beyond the intense storytelling and emotional turmoil that the show throws its audiences into, there’s one technical aspect that has film lovers raving, the show’s masterful use of the “oner“.
So what exactly is a oner? And how does it connect to Seth Rogen’s The Studio Episode 2? Let’s break it down!

The Ted Lasso actor spent some time at Galaxy’s Edge this week and paid a visit to The Mandalorian and Grogu. Sudeikis plays one of the two Bike Scout Troopers in the Season 1 finale who kidnaps Grogu and then smacks him in the head when he’s sitting on the back of the bike, but this isn’t common knowledge as he never takes off his helmet. The other Scout Trooper is portrayed by Adam Pally, the Sonic the Hedgehog star who even played Wade Whipple in the Knuckles spin-off series. Shameless had an impressive run on Showtime from 2011 to 2021.
For 11 seasons, the comedy-drama charted the trials and tribulations of the bombastic Gallagher family and those in their orbit.
Like many series, it has had a second life in streaming, thanks to a lucrative Netflix deal that brought it to homes around the globe.
(Paul Sarkis/Showtime.)
It’s not too surprising that the show resonated during its initial run and beyond.
For the most part, Shameless tackled issues plaguing people on low incomes and the lengths they go to make ends meet.
(Paul Sarkis/Showtime)
As a remake of the hit British series of the same name, it broke free from the original by taking the characters markedly different directions.
Initially, concerns were that it was too similar to its British counterpart, leading to questions about its long-term viability.

The original Jedi has arrived at Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. The official Star Wars X account posted a video of Luke Skywalker showing up at Galaxy’s Edge at Disneyland in California. While not quite to the same likeness as Mark Hamill, the actor portraying Luke Skywalker in Galaxy’s Edge does bear a resemblance to Hamill’s version of the character in Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi, the final installment in the original trilogy that sees Luke suit up in all black and use a green lightsaber. The Galaxy’s Edge Luke even wears the signature glove on his right hand. Star Wars also announced “Shadows of Memory: A Skywalker Saga,” a projection story beginning at the park tonight that will pull back the curtain on more Star Wars history.

In 2024, Alex Garland smashed A24's worldwide box office record with the unflinching dystopian action movie Civil War. Now, a year on, Garland's battlefield is back, only this time it's even more realistic. Co-written and co-directed by Garland with real-life veteran Navy Seal Ray Mendoza, the first responses to the newest effort are in and are positively glowing. On review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, Warfare has shot straight to success, earning a huge 91% approval rating from critics already, with that number expected to possibly climb within the coming days.
For Garland, a 91% critical score marks the second-best of his entire career, only missing out on 2014's Ex-Machina by 1%. This includes bettering the scores of the likes of 28 Days Later and its sequel 28 Weeks Later, the 2007 sci-fi hit Sunshine, 2018's Annihilation, and the aforementioned record-breaker, Civil War. This is no one-person project, though, with Warfare boasting a superb cast that...

After months of hype and some of the year’s best reviews, audiences can now watch The Studio. The 10-episode comedy series that lampoons Hollywood while embracing the people who try to make successful art amid the compromises of commerce debuted on Apple TV+ on Wednesday and should find itself among the year’s top Emmy contenders. Created by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, as well as Peter Huyck and Alex Gregory (Veep), and Frida Perez, and directed by Rogen and Goldberg, The Studio stars Rogen as the newly installed president at a struggling legacy studio. “I got into all this because I love movies. But now I have this fear that my job is to ruin them,” Rogen’s character, Matt Remick, says in the show’s sharp pilot episode (streaming now). Throughout the 10 episodes, Remick tries to balance his love for movies with the realities of his position,...

A star is born.
On Wednesday, Amazon’s Prime Video released the first trailer for Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino’s new series Étoile (the French word for star), one of the streaming platform’s top Emmys comedy contenders this year.
Based on an original idea by the Marvelous Mrs. Maisel creators and Emmy winners, Étoile is a modern-day series set in both New York and Paris. The show “follows the dancers and artistic staff of two world-renowned ballet companies as they embark on an ambitious gambit to save their storied institutions: swapping their most talented stars.” It’s the second series mounted by Sherman-Palladino and Palladino set within the ballet world after the beloved-but-canceled Bunheads.
“Look, my parents taught me very early to never let things go, and I am my parents’ child,” Sherman-Palladino told Vanity Fair in a recent interview. “Bunheads gave us a little taste of the...

The simplest setup in “Adolescence” is just two people talking in a room — but even that looks different than it might if the Netflix series had been made five years ago.
Episode 3 follows psychologist Briony Ariston (Erin Doherty) in real time as she assesses Jamie Miller (Owen Cooper), a 13-year-old boy accused of stabbing his classmate Katie Leonard (Emilia Holliday) to death. The camera is rarely static over the chess match between the two, always motivated by the flashes of thought and the thunderclaps of emotion that play out between them. The conversation is a marathon acting challenge for Doherty and Cooper, of course, but it’s also no small feat for cinematographer Matthew Lewis and camera operator Lee David Brown.
Could you hold 20 pounds of camera equipment for an hour without rest, moving in, out, and around the actors on specific cues, and achieve any kind of precision? Episode...

While the entertainment industry is a dreamland for many, there's a harsh reality behind the scenes, as once again proven by the 2023 Hollywood strikes. Hacks, Only Murders in the Building, and Apple TV+'s new series The Studio explore the complexities of the seemingly glamorous world of modern Hollywood, and as of now, all three are expected to score Best Comedy Series Emmy nominations.
In September, Hacks upset defending champ The Bear to become the first show focused on the entertainment industry to win the Best Comedy Series Emmy since 30 Rock. Tina Fey's groundbreaking satirical series depicting the inner workings of a fictional live sketch comedy program won three consecutive prizes from 2007-09. Coincidentally, the last writers' strike before 2023 lasted from November 2007 through February 2008. 30 Rock was the first scripted show that season to have a gag about the strike in an episode that aired during the work...
