After wrapping up October with Robert Zemeckis’ hilarious dark comedy Death Becomes Her (listen), we kicked off November with a look back at Wes Craven’s classic slasher A Nightmare on Elm Street (listen). Now, we’re traveling all the way back to the ’30s to discuss Albert Ray‘s 1932 murder mystery comedy The Thirteenth Guest!

In The Thirteenth Guest, Marie Morgan (Ginger Rogers) has just turned 21 and can now accept the inheritance that her father left her when he died at a dinner party 13 years prior. That dinner party was supposed to have 13 guests in attendance, but only 12 showed up.

While Marie tries to figure out the identity of the mysteriously absent thirteenth guest, a psychopath has started killing off the other attendees of that fated dinner party, with the dead bodies being left at the table in the same seats they had originally occupied all those years ago.

After seven weeks of our Icons and Anniversaries theme, which included titles like Bob Clark’s Black Christmas (listen), Kevin S. Tenney’s Night of the Demons (listen), and Robert Zemeckis’ Death Becomes Her (listen), we’re ready to wrap things up with Wes Craven‘s iconic slasher entry, A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984).

In the film, Nancy Thompson (Heather Langenkamp), her boyfriend Glen (Johnny Depp), best friend Tina (Amanda Wyss) and Tina’s on again/off again boyfriend Rod (Nick Corri) are all plagued by the same nightmare of a burned man with knives for fingers.

Then Tina is brutally murdered in her sleep and Rod is blamed for her death. Nancy tries to tell her mother Marge (Ronee Blakely) and Lieutenant father Don (John Saxon) about Fred Krueger (Robert Englund), but the evasive parents refuse to listen.

The Christmas carnage on display in Terrifier 3 will continue next year thanks to Brad Miska and Brandon Hill from Cineverse, who are overseeing the newly announced reimagining of one of the most infamous holiday horror films in history: Silent Night, Deadly Night. Released in 1984 by TriStar Pictures, the horror flick featured Robert Brian Wilson in the role of Billy, a young adult who when just a child witnessed the murder of his parents by a man dressed as Santa Claus. A divisive Christmas horror movie from the 1980s is getting a second remake. Forty years after parents picketed outside of theaters following the release of the initial Santa slasher movie in the franchise, we’re excited to announce today that Cineverse has acquired global rights to a new Silent Night, Deadly Night film. Deadline broke the news today.

Killer Santa Claus movies have been a genre staple for over four decades, subverting the innocence of Santa by turning him into a malevolent murderer. Some killer Santa movies feature the real Santa chopping down bad guys, while others depict an evil version of Santa terrorizing anyone in his path. Many killer Santa movies add a new twist to the slasher horror genre, with lots of dead bodies and Santa tearing through with a vengeance.

Going back to Black Christmas and Halloween, holiday horror movies have remained a genre staple for well over four decades, and this includes Santa horror movies. Regardless of any perceived quality when it comes to individual entries, you have to hand it to the Silent Night, Deadly Night franchise. It kicked off with a demented killer Santa story that created immense controversy, cementing it as a piece of hallowed horror history. Since then, it has produced a series of movies that each stand out for any number of memorable reasons (my personal favorite). You can certainly argue the successful and not-so-successful elements of a Silent Night, Deadly Night entry, but it’s tough to say any one of them is “normal.” They all offer such unique quirks and oddities that it’s hard not to find them attractive from the right angles.

And Silent Night, Deadly Night 4: Initiation is the weirdest one of the bunch and so much better for it.

On top of that, it was a career-defining role for Michael Keaton, who would go on to play Batman the following year, and it introduced most moviegoers to 17-year-old Winona Ryder for the first time.

Catalina Sandino Moreno and Harold Torres have been cast in “Silent Night,” an action-thriller starring Joel Kinnaman.

Hong Kong filmmaker John Woo (“A Better Tomorrow”) is directing the film, which is currently in production in Mexico City. The story centers on Godlock (Kinnaman), a father on a mission to avenge his young son, who was tragically caught in the crossfire of gang violence on Christmas Eve. Moreno will portray Saya, Godlock’s wife, and Torres will take on the role of the gang leader, Playa.

Robert Lynn is writing the screenplay, which contains almost no dialogue. Instead, the film will rely on the actor’s abilities to convey meaning and intention through Woo’s stylized imagery and intense action sequences.
