Little did I know about Gabriele Münter's art before I, without even realizing it, ended up in the exhibition devoted to her art in Musée d'Art Moderne in Paris in April 2025. I realized I'd seen some of her paintings before and I thought it would be interesting to learn about her life. So I went online and figured out there's a new feature film about herself and Kandinsky - this is how I came to see it. Frankly, I wasn't so much interested in this toxic love story between them, which was central in the film, but I didn't mind it. Yet, the film explains and portrays masterfully lots of things I learned in my history of art course: the Munich group, the Blue Rider, Frau Werewkin, Kandinsky's synesthesia - the film helped consolidate it all in my head and feel the art of both Münter and Kandinsky in a new way. Now I feel like going to the gallery again, I'd definitely look at those beautiful paintings with different eyes. Go for it if you're in Paris, and watch the film!
