Few directors working today can rival Ryan Coogler in terms of sheer impact. Coogler helped turn Marvel's "Black Panther" into a generationally important hit, one that transcended the superhero genre to become a defining blockbuster for the ages. He also successfully revived the "Rocky" franchise with "Creed." But Coogler, reteaming with actor Michael B. Jordan, is finally returning to the realm of original cinema with "Sinners." It's a horror movie, and the genre is hot right now, but it's also very expensive. Can Coogler's big-budget vampire flick become a big enough hit to justify its cost? That's the question.

As it stands, "Sinners" is looking at a domestic opening weekend in the $30 to $40 million range, per Box Office Theory. That number is right in line with earlier tracking, which had the movie making $40 million in its debut. For most horror movies, that would be stellar news. This is, however, a unique case.

I recently started a horror movie club with some friends from out of state. The ultimate goal is to slowly desensitize them and later convince them to join a wooded cult I intend to start in the next twenty years. But, in the meantime, it’s an excellent opportunity for me to share some of the horror movies I’ve been loving recently. Our next two films scheduled, for those interested, are Arkasha Stevenson’s The First Omen and Jason Yu’s Sleep. I’m not playing around as curator, okay?

For the inaugural meeting, I had a really hard time narrowing down the list of options. Few of them are horror lovers, and anyone who’s ever helped initiate a new genre fan knows how precise that first horror movie has to be. It’s a make-or-break moment, and through hours of deliberation, I thought of the perfect movie.

All that would change with the release of the pair’s horror-comedy, Ready or Not, which also bolstered the career of its leading lady, Samara Weaving. Since Weaving’s character, Grace, survived a bloody and trauma-inducing night at the hands of her new hubby’s sadistic family, audiences have been eager for a follow-up. Finally, after years of speculation and patience, Gillett and Bettinelli-Olpin recently revealed that Ready or Not 2 was in the works.

The Overlook Film Festival returns to “America’s most haunted city” from April 3 to 6. A cat on its ninth life, the annual event in New Orleans was founded almost a decade ago to celebrate scary movies and immersive horror experiences. Kathryn Newton will once again be teaming up with filmmaking collective Radio Silence, this time on their horror sequel Ready Or Not 2. The Ant-Man And The Wasp: Quantumania actor previously collaborated with the directing duo on last year’s Universal horror movie Abigail. Collectively known as Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, Radio Silence announced the sequel last October.

The original Ready Or Not writers are also back: Guy Busick and R Christopher Murphy will provide the film’s screenplay while Samara Weaving – the original film’s star – is also returning.

Plot details are under wraps at the moment, so we have no idea who Newton will play or how the action will be connected to the events of the first film. We’re hoping that the same stripped-back...

Deadline reports that the actress is set to re-team with Radio Silence duo Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, who directed Newton previously in last year's vampire horror film Abigail. Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett also directed Ready or Not and other popular recent horror movies like Scream 5 and Scream 6.

Released in 2019, the first Ready or Not was an absolute blast of a movie. It did very well at the box office, grossing over $57.6 million on a $6 million budget and it was heavily praised by critics and audiences alike. Ready or Not helped catapult Weaving into the realm of modern-day scream queens and she's appeared in several since (including getting the coveted opening kill in Scream 6). Next she'll star in the comedy thriller Borderline with Ray Nicholson.

If you grew up a fan of the paranormal in the '90s, then you’ll easily recognize the name Art Bell. The iconic radio host of Coast to Coast Am talked long into the night with his guests, discussing everything from ghosts and aliens, to time travel and Bigfoot. Now, Academy Award-nominee Paul Giamatti is set to portray the late Bell in a new biopic from Ready or Not and Abigail directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett.

Per Deadline, the untitled project with Giamatti in the lead is now in the works, with studios like Amazon and Warner Bros. vying for the pitch. The script is being written by Sam Chalsen (TV's Sleepy Hollow) and Nelson Greaves (Unfriended), with Sophie Cassidy's 2.0 Entertainment producing along with Jeff Katz, the latter of whom is an accomplished talk radio host in his own right, and a big fan of Bell.

Deadline reports that the filmmaking team known as Radio Silence (Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett) are teaming up with Paul Giamatti for a biopic about the late Art Bell. Best known as the founder and original host of Coast to Coast Am, Bell would field unscreened calls from all sorts of people, listening to stories of alien abduction, conspiracy theories, strange creatures, and just about everything you could imagine.

According to Deadline, several studios, including Universal, Amazon, and Warner Bros., are bidding on the Art Bell biopic. Sam Chalsen and Nelson Greaves are writing the script. This is a bit of a different project from the team that has given us Ready or Not, Abigail, and two Scream movies, but it has the potential to be quite interesting. Plus, I could watch Paul Giamatti do just about anything.

Exclusive: We are hearing that Amazon and Warner Bros among others have put bids in for a pitch that’s been making rounds from the Radio Silence team with Paul Giamatti attached to star.

The pitch is a biopic about the late paranormal DJ Art Bell, who would broadcast his radio show from his home studio 65 miles west of Las Vegas, fielding unscreened telephone calls in a five-hour show on Knye-fm called Coast to Coast.

Guests would offer up eyewitness stories on Bell’s show about alien counters, past lives, time travel and more X-File-like situations. His 2018 New York Times obit noted that Bell claimed he and his wife spotted a “150-foot-long triangular craft” above their car one night before it disappeared.

In Coast to Coast‘s heyday in the 1990s, it would pull in around 10 million listeners.

It was announced at the start of the year that Robert Eggers will be following up Nosferatu with Werwulf for Focus Features, which has already been dated for release in 2026.

Set in the 13th century and being described as a medieval horror movie, Robert Eggers’ Werwulf will howl its way into theaters from Focus Features on Christmas Day 2026.

On stage at a recent event, Eggers promised – or warned, perhaps – that Werwulf is shaping up to be the darkest horror movie he’s ever made – and that’s saying something!

Eggers teases, “It’s a medieval werewolf movie. And it’s also the darkest thing I’ve ever written. By far.”

The filmmaker co-wrote the screenplay for Werwulf alongside Sjón, the Icelandic poet and novelist who previously co-wrote the Viking movie The Northman with Eggers. Sjón has also been announced as the co-writer for a new Labyrinth movie being directed by Eggers.

Brady Corbet’s epic American immigrant saga “The Brutalist” has been given the top prize by the U.K.’s leading film writers and broadcasters.

At the London Critics’ Circle Film Awards on Sunday night, the feature was named film of the year in a ceremony that saw the honors widely shared across a number of titles, although notably both “The Substance” and “A Complete Unknown” came away empty-handed.

Edward Berger’s Vatican thriller “Conclave” took two awards, including British/Irish film of the year and actor of the year for Ralph Fiennes, while RaMell Ross’s radical Colson Whitehead adaptation “Nickel Boys” was recognised with director of the year and the technical achievement award for Jomo Fray’s first-person cinematography.

Elsewhere on the night, Jesse Eisenberg’s dark comedy “A Real Pain” was another multiple prizewinner, awarded screenwriter of the year for the actor-filmmaker, and supporting actor of the year for co-star Kieran Culkin.

After coming to know and love Melissa Barrera through her roles in 2022’s Scream and its 2023 follow-up, Scream VI, letting go of her was tough. Although Adam Wingard isn’t returning for the Godzilla x Kong sequel, Dan Stevens is planning on sticking around. THR reports that the actor is in talks to reprise his role of Trapper for the new MonsterVerse movie.

Trapper is a Titan veterinarian at Monarch, and memorably replaced Kong’s infected tooth with a metallic one in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. The new film is starting to take shape, with Kaitlyn Dever (The Last of Us) recently joining the cast. Plot details are naturally being kept under wraps at this time, but Legendary has teased that the sequel will feature “several new human characters alongside the beloved and iconic Titans Godzilla and Kong as they face off against a cataclysmic world-ending threat.“

Streaming has changed the entertainment industry in many ways, and one of them is sheer unpredictability. Because streaming a movie is considerably easier and involves less financial risk than heading to a theater, viewers are more likely to go wild with their movie night selections, which in turn means that the list of a streaming platform's most popular movies at any given time can feature some seriously surprising titles. Such is the case with the current top 10 movies streaming on Max in the U.S. Leading the pack is "Uncharted," a video game movie that became a streaming success on the platform despite its 41% Rotten Tomatoes score. The famous 2017 sci-fi flop "Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets" is also a massive hit on Max, and together, the two movies showcase the streaming audience's willingness to experiment.

What's more, these two titles are far from the only unexpected names to make the cut here.

2024 delivered an incredible lineup of horror films, including A Quiet Place: Day One, Abigail, Alien: Romulus, Heretic, MaXXXine, Trap, Smile 2, The Substance and Nosferatu. Yet, one movie from last year truly rose above the rest. That film is Longlegs, starring Maika Monroe and Nicolas Cage. After leaving theaters, fans eagerly waited for its arrival on streaming. Now, that day is finally here.

Longlegs is now available to stream, but not for everyone. On Jan. 8, 2025, the smash-hit horror film became available to watch on Prime Video but only in select locations. Those locations are Prime Video in the U.K. and Ireland. With only these two locations having access at the moment, this leaves fans outside those regions in suspense. They're stuck having to resort to alternative methods to watch the film.

For example, the only way people in the U.S. can watch Longlegs is by renting or buying it on digital platforms.

If it’s Christmas, it must be… Robert Eggers? Fresh off directing Nosferatu for Focus Features, released on Christmas Day, THR reports that Eggers is re-teaming with Focus on Werwulf, a 13th century werewolf horror movie that Eggers co-wrote and will be directing.

Focus Features has already dated Werwulf for theatrical release on Christmas Day 2026.

The Hollywood Reporter details, “Eggers wrote Werwulf with Sjón, who co-wrote heady Viking saga The Northman with the filmmaker. While details are scarce, sources say the story is set in 13th century England. The script also features dialogue that was true to the time period and has translations and annotations for those uninitiated in Old English.”

Every genre has positives and negatives that give viewers ample opportunities to have engaging, interesting discussions. Horror has a wide range of sub-genres that pair well with different themes and tones fitting to the nuances of the genre, making it entertaining for many different viewers. However, the complexities of horror also cause a great deal of controversy that makes the fanbase just as pleasant as daunting.

Even successful films from this year, including Late Night With the Devil, Oddity, and The Substance, are the subject of contempt for many viewers, each offering their own reason why certain films don't meet expectations. It’s no secret that Universal has been having a tough time bringing their classic Universal Monsters back to the big screen for a new generation in recent years, with films including Renfield, The Last Voyage of the Demeter and Abigail failing to turn a profit at the box office. The sole success story of the bunch was Leigh Whannell’s The Invisible Man, a bold take on the classic monster tale that scared up $144 million on a Blumhouse budget of just $7 million.

Whannell is back at the box office with Wolf Man for Blumhouse and Universal, another fresh take on a legendary monster from the Universal catalogue. The new movie’s production budget is a reported $25 million, quite a bit higher than the cost of The Invisible Man back in 2020. That means it’ll have to make more to become profitable, and it’s not off to a great start so far.

Fans of former Scream franchise star Melissa Barrera have good reason to shout about the acclaimed actor as one of her less-heralded films nears its streaming debut. Barrera's rom-com horror film, Your Monster, lands a major global premiere online.

Via Deadline, Your Monster, which sees Barrera star alongside Saturday Night's Tommy Dewey, will make its global streaming debut on Max, with the film premiering on Jan. 24. Along with the Max release, Your Monsters is set to air via HBO on Jan. 25 at 8 p.m. Et, allowing non-Max subscribers the chance to watch the movie on cable.

“Kneecap” — the Irish-language music biopic that became one of the buzziest indie films of 2024 and is now tipped for both Oscar and BAFTA recognition — has, perhaps unsurprisingly, emerged far ahead of the pack of nominees for the 2025 Irish Film & TV Academy (IFTA) awards.

Rich Peppiatt’s raucous comedy, about (and starring) the Belfast rap trio of the same name, has landed an astonishing 17 nominations for the awards, including best film, director, three of the six slots for lead actor, three of the six for supporting actress and one for Michael Fassbender in the supporting actor category.

“Small Things Like These,” the considerably quieter Irish drama fronted (and produced) by Cillian Murphy has nine nominations, including lead actor for Murphy, who won the award last year for “Oppenheimer.”

Having been co-produced by Irish company Tailored Films, Ali Abbasi’s Donald Trump biopic “The Apprentice” is also in the mix, with four nominations.

Nosferatu is already a major success, with the critically acclaimed remake nearly making back its production budget on its opening weekend. A particularly huge milestone for director Robert Eggers, it's the final big hit of 2024. Most importantly, it breathed new blood into the stagnant vampire movie genre, though an adjacent subgenre's upcoming remake might not be nearly as lucky.

Wolf Man is a new remake of the classic Universal Monster movie, but it doesn't seem to have nearly the same artistry as Nosferatu. Coming off as generic horror fare, it might have all the problems that plagued the vampire movies that came about before Eggers' recent hit. If anything, going back to a more Gothic setting might have actually been a much more interesting direction.

Even though there’s still $2 billion to $3 billion missing in the post Covid annual domestic box office, there was plenty to be thankful for in 2024 which is coming in at an estimated $8.72 billion, -3% from 2023’s $9 billion. That figure is factored from Comscore and Deadline calculations.

First of all, many were expecting 2024 to final at $8 billion, so the fact that we’re $720M beyond that point in a year which was half wrecked by the aftermath of the strikes, is praiseworthy.
