The United Kingdom has perfected the panel show in a way that other countries can't quite hack. A combination of quiz show and comedy series, panel shows have a basic game structure but are much looser and lower stakes than actual game shows; the game itself is merely an excuse for different comedians, actors, musicians, and celebrities in general to crack each other up. 8 Out of 10 Cats, Qi, Never Mind the Buzzcocks, Taskmaster, Have I Got News for You, Mock the Week, and many others have provided years (and often decades) of laughs, and one of the very best of the bunch is Would I Lie to You?
Would I Lie to You? has had the very funny Lee Mack (Not Going Out) and David Mitchell (Peep Show) as team captains since it began in 2007, and has been hosted by the wonderful Rob Brydon since 2009. The truly hilarious show recently finished airing its 18th series,...

The following contains spoilers from The Pitt Season 1, Episode 13, "7:00 P.M.," now streaming on Max.
The Pitt Season 1, Episode 13, "7:00 P.M." is more of the same, continuing with the mass casualty incident that began in Episode 12. There's little explaining past the "previously on," so it doesn't feel like a traditional TV episode in any sense. That works both in its favor and against it as the Max show finally answers the question of where Dr. Robby's stepson is.
"7:00 P.M." is another blur of patients, with the doctors having to make more risky decisions as supplies have dwindled. The biggest news is that Jake and his girlfriend Leah are finally located -- but in true TV fashion, one of them has been shot.

Many of the on-stage discussions in Series Mania have reflected a TV industry facing numerous stresses and strains and in the midst of a painful transition — especially from the execs based in the U.K. On Thursday, it was the turn of Ruth Berry, ITV Studios president of global partnerships and its new digital entertainment platform Zoo 55.
“What we saw last year was a perfect storm of macroeconomic challenges that were causing people to think about what they were programming, who their key audience was, who the key advertisers they needed to attract to their broadcast business,” she said, speaking on stage in Lille.
But Berry pointed to ITV Studios shows such as “Fool Me Once,” “Ludwig,” “Until I Kill You,” “After the Flood” and “Mr Bates Vs the Post Office” — which this morning landed six BAFTA nominations — as proof that the business was still experiencing “creative success” and was in “rude health.

The limited series won several honors last year and through the winter, including Emmy Award wins for Gadd and Gunning, and a Screen Actors Guild Award victory for Gunning.
Three shows tied for second behind Baby Reindeer with six nominations: ITV's Mr. Bates vs. the Post Office, Disney+'s Rivals, and Apple TV+'s spy show and Emmy winner Slow Horses.

ITV Studios sales boss Ruth Berry has called 2024 a “bittersweet” year for international TV drama, with an “incredibly successful creative” 12 months tempered by a “perfect storm of macroeconomic challenges.”
In a conversation during her Lille Dialogues session at Series Mania, the Itvs President of Global Partnerships and Zoo5 pointed to ITV’s production arm launching the likes of Fool Me Once, Until I Kill You, After the Flood, Mr Bates Vs the Post Office and Ludwig – the latter of which has sold to 85 territories – as examples of the creative boom and of the biz remaining in “rude health.”
However, “What we saw last year was a perfect storm of macroeconomic challenges that were causing people to think about what they were programming, who their key audience was, who the key advertisers they needed to attract to their broadcast business,” she added.

David Mitchell is brilliant — no, not the Cloud Atlas author, but the equally British talent known for his great comedic work with Robert Webb, as William Shakespeare (Upstart Crow), and as a team captain of arguably the funniest British panel show of the past decade and more (Would I Lie to You?). Even those unforgettable series haven't made the popular dent that his latest show, Ludwig, has. The crime dramedy became the BBC's most-watched new scripted show since 2022, with the second episode bringing in 9.5 million views.
The delightful series stars Mitchell as John, a hermetic puzzle-maker whose twin brother, detective James Taylor, goes missing. When his sister-in-law (the wonderful Anna Maxwell Martin) asks him for help, John impersonates his twin in order to sneak into his office, grab some information, and leave without anyone noticing. Ludwig has charmed viewers and critics alike. There are six episodes in Ludwig Season 1. The first debuted on Thursday, March 20, on BritBox following its BBC One and BBC iPlayer premiere in the U.K. on September 25, 2024. After raking in 9.5 million viewers across 28 days, it became BBC’s biggest new scripted series since 2022. Will Ludwig be back for more? Here’s everything we know about the show’s future. David Mitchell is causing double the trouble in Ludwig, the latest British television hit to make its way to U.S. audiences via BritBox. Ludwig sees the star of Peep Show playing John "Ludwig" Taylor, a reclusive puzzle creator who is asked to impersonate his detective brother James, in hopes of finding out where his brother vanished to. It's one-part detective drama and one-part workplace comedy, and it's been a smash hit with audiences.
In an interview with Cbr, Mitchell spoke about how his love of detective dramas motivated him to add Ludwig to his already lengthy resume. He discussed the process of having to portray John playing James, and working alongside Line of Duty alum Anna Maxwell Martin. Plus, he teased what he's looking forward to in Ludwig Series 2.

The following contains light spoilers for Ludwig Series 1, Episode 1, now streaming on BritBox.
David Mitchell has carved out his space in British television by playing charmingly strange characters, and that trend continues with Ludwig, the new detective comedy-drama coming to BritBox after its successful outing on BBC One. Mitchell is neither creator nor writer on Ludwig -- that would be Mark Brotherhood -- but the show feels like it was tailored to him. It's a mystery series, but at its heart, it's a workplace comedy that's just got some dead bodies in it.
Ludwig is titled after the nickname of John Taylor, a reclusive character who crafts newspaper puzzles. But when John's straight-laced twin brother James goes missing, his wife Lucy recruits John to pose as James and look for clues about his disappearance. Naturally, this half-cocked scheme spins out of control, and what follows will be immediately addictive to...

David Mitchell stars as John “Ludwig” Taylor, a reclusive but brilliant puzzle maker who’s facing one big conundrum in the cozy BritBox comedy Ludwig (premiering with two episodes on March 20 in the U.S.). When his semi-estranged twin brother, a detective, goes missing, he agrees to step into his shoes as a one-time favor for his beloved sister-in-law, Lucy (Anna Maxwell Martin)… and winds up having to solve a murder. Thankfully, Ludwig’s puzzle-solving brain makes him a whiz, Mitchell tells TV Insider, adding that the premise is a physical comedy gold mine. “The thing that first drew me to the project, comically, is that once you accept the premise that he absolutely looks identical to his brother, that there is no one who will not accept that he’s his brother, that just frees it up for so much comedy.” Ludwig can “fail to such a greater extent...

The actor and comedian is beloved in the U.K. for his starring role in Peep Show and on the British panel show Would I Lie to You?, so it was a no-brainer for creator Mark Brotherhood when he got wind that Mitchell, inspired by his own love of crime and mystery shows, was looking for a detective role.

Channel 4 is bringing back its big guns with a Russell T. Davies drama and the return of a David Mitchell and Robert Webb sketch comedy after 15 years.
It’s a Sin creator Davies is making Tip Toe for Channel 4, which the network describes as “exploring the most corrosive forces facing the LGBTQ+ community today.” The show follows Leo and Clive who live next door to each other in Manchester. Martin joins previously announced cast member Rhys Ifans in the alt-history drama, which was originally announced in April 2024.
As previously reported, the series will tell the story the alternative history of the space race like “For All Mankind,” but this time from the Soviet Union perspective.
The official description for the show describes it as “a propulsive, paranoid thriller that takes us back to the key moment in the alt-history retelling of the space race – when the Soviet Union became the first nation to put a man on the moon. But this time, we explore the story from behind the Iron Curtain, showing the lives of the cosmonauts, the engineers, and the intelligence officers embedded among them in the Soviet space program, and the risks they all took to propel humanity forward.

In recent years, it has become a tradition for animated adaptations of beloved children’s books to grace our screens during the festive season. While this trend arguably began in the 1980s with Dianne Jackson’s adaptation of Raymond Briggs’ The Snowman, more recent years have brought us several Julia Donaldson classics, as well as older favourites like Michael Rosen’s We’re Going on a Bear Hunt and Judith Kerr’s The Tiger Who Came to Tea, both directed by Robin Shaw. This year, Shaw returned to the director’s chair for another Kerr festive adaptation, with the Lupus Films produced Mog’s Christmas, which has earned a nomination for this year’s Best British Short Animation award at the BAFTAs. Curious about the process of bringing cherished books to life, we sat down with Shaw to discuss the art of creating family-friendly films, the challenge of staying true to the original story,...

The Damned (1969), followed by Death in Venice (1971) and Ludwig (1973), is a historical drama film by Luchino Visconti and the first installment of the aforementioned German trilogy. Set in the backdrop of Hitler’s rise to power, the film portrays the steady disintegration of the affluent Essenbeck family due to the actions of one Hauptsturmführer Aschenbach, a highly influential and manipulative leader of the Schutzstaffel.
Events in the film are driven by real-life incidents that were instrumental to the transformation of the Weimar Republic (Hitler as Chancellor) to Nazi Germany (Hitler as Führer). These include the Reichstag fire and the Röhm purge, among others.
A Milanese nobleman himself, Visconti (officially The Count of Lonate Pozzolo) luxuriates in the decay of German nobility due to Nazi interference and the intrinsic decadence of the members of the Essenbeck family. As a result, The Damned presents itself as a detailed study of instability, sexual transgression,...

A lot of great comedy shows have ended recently, but other shows have new episodes coming up for fans to look forward to. 2024 saw the end of several popular sitcoms that have been on the air for years, including Curb Your Enthusiasm, What We Do in the Shadows and Young Sheldon. There are still plenty of great comedy shows on TV, and their varied styles offer something for everyone. UK network ITV is planning an additional £20M ($25.9M) in net cost savings, as impacts of the 2023 Hollywood labor strikes hit its production arm and broadcaster demand drops.
The broadcaster has posted group revenues of £2.74B, down 8%, for the nine months to September 30, 2024, with media and entertainment turnover, which includes linear channels, up 4% at £1.52B. Digital revenue also grew as streamer Itvx grew streaming hours by 14%.
However, today’s trading update revealed revenues at ITV Studios, the production arm that makes the likes of Love Island and I’m a Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here!, had fallen 20% to £1.21B, which was “impacted by the expected phasing of production deliveries, which are heavily weighted to Q4, and the impact from both the 2023 U.S. writers and actors strikes.” The industrial action will see around £80M in revenue transfer from 2024 to 2025, ITV said in its guidance.

ITV Studios Quarterly Revenue Falls 20 Percent, Hit by Hollywood Strikes; ITV Adds $13M in Cost Cuts
U.K. TV giant ITV, led by CEO Carolyn McCall, reported a 20 percent drop in revenue for its ITV Studios production arm on Thursday, “impacted by the phasing of deliveries and the 2023 U.S. writers’ and actors’ strike.”
However, ITV Studios is on track to deliver record adjusted earnings before interest, taxes and amortization for the full year 2024, “reflecting efficiency gains and a significant fourth-quarter delivery schedule.” ITV Studios revenue is expected to decline in the mid-single digit percent range over the full year though. The company said that will be “only marginally down year-on-year (when) excluding the impact of the U.S. actors’ and writers’ strikes.”
Meanwhile, total advertising revenue was flat in the third quarter, as projected by the company.
And streaming service Itvx “continued to perform strongly with 14 percent growth in streaming hours and 15 percent growth in digital advertising revenue” in the nine months to Sept. 30.”

David Mitchell and Anna Maxwell Martin will return in for Ludwig series 2. More news can be found below these words.
David Mitchell has become a familiar face in UK comedy, whether trying to discern who’s telling the truth in Would I Lie To You? or as the uptight Mark Corrigan alongside long time comedy partner Robert Webb in Jesse Armstrong and Sam Bain’s Peep Show.
He also took on the role of William Shakespeare in Ben Elton’s sitcom Upstart Crow, and reprised the role for a stage adaptation that opened in 2020 and then again when the play was restaged in 2022.
Just as Alan Davies took a left turn from stand-up comedy to drama in David Renwick’s superb Jonathan Creek, Mitchell recently moved into the realm of crime drama to play the title role in six part BBC series Ludwig.
