“Star Trek: Discovery” fans thrown off guard by the midseason finale’s ending, guess what? That was the plan. According to showrunners Gretchen Berg and Aaron Harberts, that’s exactly what they wanted.
“Every couple of episodes, right around the time the audience feels like, ‘Oh, I know what you’re doing,’ we switch it up,” Berg told IndieWire. “It became a natural rhythm for the show, and it makes it really fun for us, the writers, everybody, really. Because it’s a way to keep it lively.”
The final moments of Episode 9, “Into the Forest I Go,” find the Discovery lost in unknown territory following a massive malfunction with the ship’s spore drive. “It felt like a great place to end the first half of the season, too,” Harberts said. “We had a lot of fun tracking the debate that the fans are having about where they think...

Fan theories are a tricky thing to engage with, given how perceptive those rabid followers of popular programs can be. More often than not, these theories turn out to be right: In just the last year or two, major twists on “Mr. Robot” and “Westworld” were accurately guessed weeks before the respective shows actually revealed the truth. Now, the same may be true of a circulating theory regarding “Star Trek: Discovery,”
The following piece does not technically contain spoilers. But it is going to acknowledge an ongoing fan theory that you may or may not want to engage with, because — if it turns out to be true — it’s likely to be a major twist that’s revealed in the next episode of “Star Trek: Discovery,” given that it’s the mid-season finale and a big confrontation with the Klingons is coming. So, stop reading now or…

From the very beginning of “Magic to Make the Sanest Man Go Mad,” we knew something different was in store for this episode. Up until now “Discovery” has favored extended cold opens, delaying the opening credits for several minutes. But instead, following the always moving opening theme by Jeff Russo, “Discovery” took on a narrative device well-explored by other sci-fi franchises — including another “Star Trek” series — and managed to both utilize the fun, appealing elements of the trope while finding its own spin on the action.

This Woman Dropped 175 Lbs. and Gained Confidence Along the Way: ‘I’m a Completely Different Person’
After being overweight for her entire life, Jessica Beniquez had some bad habits to break to lose 175 lbs.
“I was a very picky eater. I didn’t stick a vegetable in my mouth. I ate fast food every day, and would pretty much only eat chicken nuggets, pasta and fries,” the 21-year-old tells People. And her lifestyle had turned sedentary, despite having played sports in high school. “I laid in bed watching series after series on Netflix. All I did was eat, go to work and watch my shows.”
At over 320 lbs., her weight took a toll on her body.

“Heartwarming” is a tricky word to use in a TV review: It brings to mind those insufferably corny, 7th Heaven-type shows where the family has a big group hug at the end of each episode. (Yuck.) “A Ghost Story” (A24) joined the recent surge of strong limited openers. Boasting top reviews, David Lowery’s offbeat Sundance hit nabbed a wider than usual arthouse audience. A24 is terrific with the right project at casting a wider specialized market net, so this should join several recent titles led by “The Big Sick” (Amazon Studios/Lionsgate) and “The Beguiled” (Focus Features) that have found wider interest as they expand.
This weekend, as breakout “The Big Sick” reaches a wider audience, it’s on its way to becoming the biggest specialized release of 2017 so far — and Amazon’s biggest grosser to date. It looks perfectly positioned for its nationwide break this Friday.

Getting out early can be an advantage in the documentary race, which is often front loaded at January’s Sundance Film Festival. While a raft of movies made their mark, the question is which ones can sustain support through the end of the year.
Among that festival’s breakouts were three Syria documentaries. Daring and timely “City of Ghosts” (July 14, A & E/Amazon Studios), which is Matthew Heineman’s follow-up to his Oscar-nominated border drug war thriller “Cartel Land,” will get a major push. Any footage from Syria came from the fearless Raqqa journalists he tracked through Turkey and Germany, where they discover that they are not necessarily safe — anywhere.
It remains to be seen if there will be room for more than one Syrian documentary. HBO Documentary Films is forgoing Emmy consideration for “Winter on Fire” nominee Evgeny Afineevsky’s harrowing “Cries From Syria” (March 10, HBO), planning an Oscar push this fall.

When Chrissy Teigen opened up about her battle with postpartum depression and anxiety, the model explained how the condition took a toll on her mentally and physically, and in her work life. One of the projects that had to take a backseat to her health was her second cookbook.
After welcoming her daughter Luna Simone, 11 months, with husband John Legend, Teigen started noticing symptoms when she returned from maternity leave to host Lip Sync Battle.
“Getting out of bed to get to set on time was painful. My lower back throbbed; my shoulders—even my wrists—hurt,” she wrote in...

Regularly, in articles and essays, in posts and tweets, Virginia Woolf's quote, “...on or about December 1910 human character changed,” gets bandied about as the coming of the modern age. It is claimed, by such a writer as Edward Mendelson, that her statement was a serious joke. And according to him, her pronouncement was a hundred years premature. “Human character changed on or about December 2010, when everyone, it seemed, started carrying a smartphone,” he wrote in a recent New York Review of Books article. That is a serious joke, too. Each is probably not right; besides, trying to pinpoint something as elastic and elusive as human character is better left to the hacks. Few persons living or dead would attest to these dates when asked about human character, which most people probably think falls under the rubric we call life. Someone much more divested than Woolf or Mendelson, Thich Nacht Than,...

The “Bob’s Burgers Music Album” is coming your way May 12, and it’s loaded up with more goodies than a Poutine on the Ritz Burger.
This is not the time to be modern and go the digital route for your music. Hell, even buying the CDs isn’t old-school enough. Instead, if you buy the the “Bob’s Burgers Music Album” deluxe limited-edition gift box, that comes with three LPs (in “condiment-colored” vinyl?!), a Bob’s Buskers seven-inch white vinyl LP, a hardbound lyric book (for those times you need to know more than just “Butts, Butts, Butts”), a sheet music collection, three original posters and a lot more. What is “more” you ask? Take a look at the unboxing video below featuring Teddy’s hairy arms and mumbly narration to see everything:
Of course, the two-cd album is still chockfull of “Bob’s Burgers” audio goodness, which amounts to 107 songs.

“Worry and the physical manifestations are part of who I am, from soul to skin. They’re an invisible strand twisted tightly into my DNA, mapping its mark on my body in hard scars I cannot stop clawing, the ragged tang of chewed-up cheek flesh, and the slump of my shoulders after another restless attempt at sleep.”

Okay, this is one of those "sick" calls you make to the boss when you're not really sick but you just absolutely can't. Getting out of bed since Tuesday has been quite a Herculean challenge. Hence the far lighter than usual posting (apologies! but by Monday we will figure out a way to be posting with the mad frequent abandon that awards season deserves). If you have any tricks for soldiering on whilst feeling despair do please share them in the meantime. It's not just myself who needs them.
One of the best activities when feeling under the weather, physically or spiritually or emotionally is arguably list-making. It is "busywork" so in one sense you don't need all that much energy and focus to do it but it is also fun if you choose the right list topic. Over the past couple of weeks I've been updating...

The Raid star Iko Uwais deserves to silat his way through a million hapless evil men, but here’s hoping that, going forward, he picks better cinematic vehicles for his frighteningly fast feet and fists. Then again, every big action star worth their salt has a host of forgettable turns peppering the true showcases for their physical greatness. At least Headshot is good fun. It’s simultaneously a testament to directors Timo Tjahjanto and Kimo Stamboel’s skill and the disappointing lack in mainstream action filmmaking that their middle-of-the-road effort still stands out among the rest.
Uwais plays “Ishmael,” a man with a blank memory and a hard, heavily scarred body who awakens from a two-month coma on an isolated island. Soon after, he and his doctor / sort-of-love-interest, Ailin (Chelsea Islan), are under assault by armed and dangerous thugs who seem to know who he is. (Three guesses what, and...

Mike Birbiglia’s “Don’t Think Twice” (The Film Arcade) is the latest mid-summer hit, joining the recent turnaround in art house fortunes. Following his template for “Sleepwalk With Me,” Birbiglia & Co. boosted box office via frequent appearances at their New York cinema. The already strong film surged to a huge initial $90,000 number with many sold out shows on multiple screens.
Woody Allen’s “Cafe Society” (Lionsgate) continued to improve on the director’s recent performance, and could end up besting two other recent strong openers. “Captain Fantastic” (Bleecker Street) and “Hunt for the Wilderpeople” (The Orchard) continue to have strong expansions; both could end up over $10 million as well.
Asian wide-audience commercial releases are performing well in domestic play, with entries from South Korea, India, the Philippines along with China continuing to deliver strong niche results.

American Gods is coming to Starz, and it looks fantastic.
The show's cast and crew took to the stage at San Diego Comic Con and brought the first trailer with them.
Rickey Whittle is one of the leads, and boy, it looks like he's had a pretty great rebound from The 100.
He plays Shadow, who is totally not loving life. Getting out of jail after a three-year stint, he returns home for the funeral of his beloved wife, Laura.
He is seated next to a man named Mr. Wednesday who knows a little too much about Shadow. Things take off in a crazy direction from there.
With Bryan Fuller behind the show, you can bet your bottom dollar that this is going to be a good one.
Fuller has a great track record, so he wants people who have and haven't read the books to know that "you’re in good hands.
