inspirational sports movie

Anthony Robles was born with one leg. With the support of his mother Judy Robles (Jennifer Lopez), he becomes a champion wrestling as a high school student. He still does not get an invitation from the major colleges especially his dream school Arizona State.

This is a biopic of American wrestler Anthony Robles. Apparently, he's playing himself in some of the wrestling. At its core, it is the very standard inspirational sports movie. The family story has some interesting darkness. JLo is mostly doing good. I have a slight problem with one of her big emotional talk, but it's a minor issue. This is generally very good.

Enjoyable Yet Overly Familiar

The movie is good on its own. But feels a lot like numerous other inspiring sports movies. This one feels a lot like 1993's Rudy, even having a scene where the team rally around the main character staying on the team. It wears its numerous inspirations on its sleeve, including numerous references to Rocky.

The first half of the movie is rushed and kind of dull as it speeds through the events of his life. It goes through things so quickly that it lacks emotion. It's the second half that picks up and makes it worth it. This is when we really see him wrestling and focuses on a rival to defeat. It's the finale that really makes the movie worthwhile, making it just as tense and nail biting at Rocky or The Karate Kid.

The effects to make Jharrel Jerome appear to have one leg is really convincing and Jerome pulls it off. He's good when focusing on the wrestling aspect of the movie, with the real Anthony Robles standing in during certain shots. But he's not so good at the interpersonal drama, with his serious face often looking more confused. The rest of the cast are all good. Jennifer Lopez, Michael Pena, and Don Cheadle all give their usual terrific performances.

Real life sport biopics are inspiring and all, but they need to find a story that is more than just another Rocky or Cool Runnings.

This movie is unstoppable

Unstoppable Seen Unstoppable in an early preview in the theater and love it. I want to share with you the from all the major roles were excellent!

Storyline was fantastic- enjoyed the rollercoaster of emotions.

Jharrel Jermone in the lead role draws you in to his sadness, happiness, and great will. Jennifer Lopez plays the mother with an extremely convincing. When the movie ended, I was physically worn-out from all the action/powerful scenes. This is based on a real story. The movie moves very quickly and great watching the plot unfold. This is based on a real story.

Don't let movie get away.

I highly recommend this film to all ages.

Pretty good except...

I enjoyed this movie. I thought the storyline was pretty good and the acne was fantastic. But the cinematography.... Way too much camera shake, even when it's not necessary. And it feels like the cinematography was shot with an iPhone. Other than that, no real complaints on this movie.

You don't see too many motivational type movies like this anymore. The story of a one legged athlete who strives to be a national champion is pretty darn cool. Kinda has a karate kid type vibe.

Worth watching if you haven't already seen it. But not really the kind of movie I would come back to watch to twice, unless it was with somebody else who haven't seen it, who wants to watch it with you.

It's No Vision Quest

Based on the true story of wrestler Anthony Robles whose goal is to become Nationals Champion despite his disability. The film stars Jharrel Jerome as Anthony Robles. Jennifer Lopez plays his Mom Judy. Don Cheadle is his college wrestling coach Shawn Charles. The performance by Jerome and Cheadle were excellent. The rest of the cast were just average to be honest including Jennifer Lopez. I found this film about an inspiring story less than inspiring due to the lack of emotion I felt. A film like this should make you want to stand up and cheer and maybe go out and do some crunches or run around the block. You know like one of the Rocky films or Hoosiers or Vision Quest. A training.montage with great music would have helped. While it's not a bad film it's far from great.

Unstoppable

Anthony Robles is a wrestler with ambitions to reach the top of the American collegiate championships. That's going to be more of a challenge for him than most as he only has one leg, but this is not a man who is going to shy away from that challenge. It's a competent Jharrel Jerome who plays him for the dramatic elements of the story whilst it's the man himself doing the far more energetic wrestling aspects and the unremarkalble Jennifer Lopez simply fails to shine at all as his mother, caught up in a torrid relationship. When this drama focusses on the sheer passion of this man and his determination to succeed, it works well enough, but it spends far too much time on the familial discord aspects of their lives. Sure, these are contributory factors to the remarkable nature of his achievements, but they drag the pace down and soak us in a melodrama that rather takes from the potency of a story that's well worth the telling. Michael Peña delivers better as his no-nonsense but ultimately motivational coach and the action photography really does give us a sense of the effort and hard work required by Robles to prove to his peers and himself that he had what it takes to reach the top in a very competitive sport where he would be given no quarter. Personally, I'd have preferred a documentary to this drama as Robles himself is the star and the others really just clutter up the story with their over-scripted dialogue and sentimentality. I did quite like the intimate nature of the photography during the action scenes. A bit juddery at times, but it made the action on the mat all the more visceral for a character who lived and breathed his sport. It just goes to show what can be achieved when the attitude is positive and the support structure is there to facilitate that.

An absolute delight

This movie did not just dive into the true life story of an individual, This film found a way into my heart. This movie has an extra special standout role with Jennifer Lopez. Her performing seems to be award-worthy. When the right cast comes together and you have a director who understands the message of the movie there's truly no denying that this movie shows that movie telling should be about stories not just about special effects. A Movie should be about storytelling and this truly tells a great story. I would recommend anyone to watch this movie because it shows that with determination anything is possible.

Arizona Hometown Hero

When - 12:10 PM Where - Amazon Prime With Who - Myself

First Thoughts - There are really solid performances throughout, even from JLo. Jharrel Jerome is definitely an up-and-coming actor to keep an eye on moving forward. His ability to play emotions across his face and with his eyes without uttering a word isn't something that can be taught. Don Cheadle and Michael Pena play Jharrel's coaches in college and high school, respectively, adding a warm father figure presence to the movie that Bobby Cannavale's stepfather character Rick Robles lacks.

The wrestling scenes are well choreographed and not only feel real but through camerawork and editing, help to place the audience in the matches. Speaking of camerawork, that was a point of frustration for me because it felt uneven throughout the movie. There were moments where the cinematography was sharp and looked good and it used some interesting shots, such as shooting beneath the wrestling match scenes as if the camera were the wrestling mat. And then there would be other scenes where the camera was unsteady for no reason and it pulled me out of the film. The color grading during the first third of the movie also felt amateurish, further driving home the cheap feel of the cinematography.

Despite these issues, overall this was a good sports movie that kept my attention the entire runtime.

Full Review -

Unstoppable In recent years, I've felt myself grow cynical toward the sports movie sub genre. The cliches and tropes that can be found in nearly every entry into said sub genre have become so uninspired and boring. That being said, I went into Unstoppable with an open mind because having lived a third of my life in Arizona and with both of my brothers-in-law were wrestlers, I had a deeply personal connection to Anthony Robles' story.

I'm happy to say that not only was I not disappointed, I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. Firstly, every performance given here was solid, particularly from Jharrel Jerome as Anthony Robles. His ability to portray the wide range of emotions his character is feeling through his physical acting abilities is impressive, especially for such a young actor. Michael Peña and Don Cheadle play his high school and college coaches, respectively. They bring a driving, fatherly presence to film, something that contrasts drastically to Anthony's abusive stepfather, played to an uncomfortable degree by Bobby Cannavale. Even Jennifer Lopez, whose acting chops are debatable, does a stellar job in the movie, portraying Anthony's strong willed, loving mother.

On the technical side of things, the soundtrack is well cultivated for the time period, the late 2000's - early 2010's, to further immerse the audience in the story while also highlighting the emotions being expressed in each scene.

The editing, especially during the wrestling matches, was also well done. Fast-paced but also not afraid to hold certain shots for maximum impact, it keeps the audience's attention but doesn't give them a headache with a bunch of fast cuts.

My biggest issue was the cinematography and how uneven it felt during the runtime of the film. During the first act, the camerawork is shaky for no reason, and the color grading makes it appear amateurish. It does improve as the movie goes on, with some really cool shots during the wrestling matches coming from beneath the actual matches.

Overall, despite some stereotypical cliches found within, the deep heart found here helps to look past those issues.

What are your thoughts on the film?

Honestly never seen a movie like this in a long time so inspiring so motivational if Anthony could do it we all can and everyone was so ambitious in the film the actors but let's give credits to Jennifer Lopez because people don't take her abilities seriously in this film she really played the rule with full passion and desire and she really took the rule so seriously and I love how she took her rule to another level and I am so proud of her and she really can do anything and the film has so many different messages about life and ups and downs and never giving up and also mother son story.....

Great movie!

Wow! Great story about an amazing wrestler who had to overcome so much in life! This may replace Vision Quest as my favorite wrestling movie! To see what he overcame with training for wrestling is mind blowing in such a tough sport that requires a lot of Stamina. I remember watching both finals matches of his in 2010 and 2011. This movie provides some great motivation on never giving up, especially when things get rough. I feel that they casted Anthony Robles well with their selected actor. Don Cheadle is always amazing in his roles. I'm not a J-Lo fan, but she played her role well. This is a movie that I can watch over and over!

The human spirit at its best

It is the kind of movies that you know exactly what you are going to get and yet...it leaves its marks on each and every member of the audience. The name and type of genre has directed everything to be pretty well known and that is without reading a single word about the superstar of this movie.

At the end of watching this movie, I've searched information on the web about Robles's statistics and discovered some facts that has been changed for the purpose of creating drama and I was pretty OK with those. I understand that not each and every story can create such massive drama for the big (or in this case - little) screen.

This movie was too long. But it had several surprising guests that you cannot see in the one-man-show poster. Jeniffer Lopez, Michael Peña, Don Cheadle and Bobby Cannavale make this movie very much an obligation between William Goldenberg and his audience. Its like a promise to get quality from a movie with an unknown first pick movie-star.

Yeah...Jharrel Jerome was here and there, on several good movies, but never the lead. Never a face you would remember. Now he takes the lead on his shoulders and gives one hell of a performance. A one that let other big names almost disappear in his shadow. JLo is not an actual surprise, since she has been proving her acting abilities more and more in the last years.

It is a forgettable sport drama. One that you will probably remember due to the fact that the hero is missing one leg. That's it. But it is so well made and pretty exciting, with a lot of great actors that deserve your time, even if it takes a little bit more time than it should. Great movie to watch, just to know a great true inspiring story.

BEEN THERE, DONE THAT...AGAIN...!

A current Amazon Prime original now streaming starring Jennifer Lopez & Jharrel Jerone. Jerome portrays Anthony Robles, a real one-legged phenom, who took his skill to the wrestling mat & wowed audiences by becoming the hero of his team. On the home front while Lopez, his mom, is forever in his corner, his dad, Bobby Cannavale, is a hard-nosed tyrant whose say rules. Jerome gets a scholarship from Drexel University but decides not to take it so he can go to a local college in Arizona to stay near his family where he does reasonably well but after taking a loss from his nemesis, a cherished champion (not to mention the college nearly disbanding the wrestling program) Jerome's job is cut out for him. A truly remarkable true story is given an unremarkable film treatment w/Lopez again maybe miscast (a bit too glamorous to be playing a woman w/multiple children?) leaving the always excellent Jerome in a morass of cliche & 'rah rah' speeches (some of them delivered by the likes of Oscar nominee Don Cheadle & Michael Pena who look pained to be doing so) leaving the proceedings to fall into background noise territory.

Wish I could rate it a 6.5

I love college wrestling, so was thrilled to learn this movie was being made. I intentionally waited to watch it until I could watch it with my whole family, and that was the right decision.

But while I liked the film, I struggled rating it. A 7 seems too high, but 6 feels too harsh.

Why not a 7? Several reasons. Here are three:

1. The acting is just decent. Not great, but not awful. The cast was strong, but it felt like most of them just put in a good days work but didn't go above and beyond in their art because they knew this film wasn't going to win any awards.

2. The pacing is off. I could feel the scenes they left on the cutting floor that would have made the story stronger. I know they wanted to keep the story from being too long, so sacrifices were made. But sadly, you can feel those sacrifices. Good films don't leave you with a sense of what was edited out.

3. Character development was severely lacking. Other than the mother/son relationship (and maybe a couple scenes of sibling love and loyalty), you don't get a strong sense of relationship between Anthony and his coaches or teammates. You are supposed to get that sense, but they just didn't build that aspect well enough.

But why not give it a "low" 6?

1. The movie is fairly accurate and true to Anthony's story (other than the big one of Anthony supposedly finishing second in 2010). It helps that Anthony was highly involved with the film.

2. The writers, producers, and director made some wise decisions to get some wrestling people involved. It isn't perfect from a wrestling standpoint, but it's better than most other films about wrestling.

3. The first half feels like the film is going to devolve into your typical biopic. And while it does give in from time to time to biopic tropes, it manages to not get too over the top and actually just try to be a good film that tells the story. For instance, early in the film they sort of paint the Iowa wrestling team as the big bad awful villains of the film, but then when it comes to the big match, they didn't have McDonough do the typical sports movie trope of talking trash to the opponent.

So that's why I wish I could rate this film a 6.5. I'm glad I watched it, which is how I always feel with movies I rate a 7, but I won't be recommending it as often as I might with other movies I rate a 7.

I am Unstoppable....

This movie tells the true story of Anthony Robles, born without a right leg, from Mesa, Arizona. He was raised by his mother who encouraged him to stand tall and be himself in spite of his handicap. Constantly pushing himself to be better and overcome his handicap, he discovered a passion for wrestling in high school. Striving to excel he rises up to become a force to be reckoned with on the mat, in spite of the struggles of his life.

There are a few scenes where Anthony is in Philadelphia and climbs the same steps as Rocky, and stands in Rocky's footsteps. I found myself rooting hard for Anthony Robles, not wanting to see him fail. But when he did, hoping he would get back up and fight harder. And when he did, cheering him on with every fiber of my being...GO ANTHONY GO!!!!

The Movie is based on Anthony's 2012 Autobiography Unstoppable. It is a great movie, some of my favorite themes rolled into one fantastic feel good movie. The underdog coming out on top against seemingly insurmountable odds, and an Incredible True Story. I love the True Story Movies the best, and I love this one.

An emotional roller coaster movie Unstoppable

Saw the movie at the movie theater. It was a roller coaster of tears for me. Jennifer-Lopez as the character of Judy shows the growth of the character of being dependent in the husband and when the husband leaves she starts depending on herself with the help of her son Anthony Robles. You can see how Anthony starts developing his wrestling skills in college which helps his mental positiveness. It shows how both Judy and Anthony begin to grow and lean on each other to survive and grow together. It's a good story to tell that no matter your struggles in life either physical or mental you can overcome it.

Had to stop watching

Wow. This film was boring. The acting was sub standard, the story pretty flat, the dialogue cheesy and naff. It tried to be a feel good movie, but has the emotional depth of shelf. The whole film revolves around how amazing it is to wrestle with one leg. Close up of one leg. Training run with cruches (why would he use cruches if he doesn't use them while wrestling). Ooo, he falls, so sad. Nobody cares, he's so down troden. Jennifer Lopez's worst film, and that's saying something. Anyone, if you can make it to the end of this film, it's you who's the hero. Not much else to say but gotta fill 39 characters.

Inspiring film

This is an inspiring and beautiful film. I enjoyed watching it very much. The actors were good. I strongly recommend watching this movie. This movie keeps you on the edge of your seat from the very first scene to the last.

This film is a perfect blend of high-stakes action, emotional depth, and brilliant storytelling.

Unstoppable is not just an action movie; it's a testament to teamwork, courage, and the human spirit.

It's a must-watch for anyone who loves a gripping, well-executed thriller. I couldn't recommend it enough-prepare to be blown away!

It has some disability like The dialogue often feels forced, and the attempts at emotional moments come across as contrived rather than genuine.

One of the worst movies I have ever seen.

The movie "Unstoppable" (2024), starring Jennifer Lopez, Jharrel Jerome, and Don Cheadle, presents itself as an action thriller that attempts to capture the audience's attention with a story of tension and pursuit. However, what is supposed to be an exciting and adrenaline-filled cinematic experience ends up being a rehash of plots already seen in other films of the genre. The result is a movie that adds nothing new and, instead of keeping us on the edge of our seats, leaves us feeling fatigued and uninterested.

From the beginning, the plot seems taken from a generic script we have seen repeatedly in countless action movies. We are introduced to a protagonist with a troubled past, an extreme situation that forces them to act, and a series of events that unfold predictably. There are no surprises, no unexpected twists, and no moments that truly impact the viewer. The movie becomes a monotonous journey that drags on to its inevitable conclusion, without offering anything that truly makes it stand out.

One of the most disappointing aspects of "Unstoppable" is the cast. Jennifer Lopez, who has proven to be a capable actress in certain roles, looks worn out in this production. Her performance lacks the energy and charisma that have previously been part of her appeal on the big screen. Instead of a convincing and emotional performance, her acting feels mechanical and soulless, making it difficult to connect with her character.

On the other hand, Jharrel Jerome, who has shown his talent in previous projects, delivers a surprisingly poor performance in this movie. His character lacks depth, and his portrayal fails to convey the intensity or desperation the role requires. His on-screen presence is bland, lacking nuance or moments that truly stand out. This is particularly frustrating, considering that Jerome has demonstrated great range in other productions.

Don Cheadle, an actor with a well-established career in Hollywood, also fails to save the movie. His performance feels flat and devoid of emotion, as if he is merely fulfilling his contract without real interest in the project. There is no real effort to bring his character to life or to engage the audience with his story. What should be a solid and weighty performance turns into a forgettable one.

The script is another major issue with "Unstoppable." The dialogues are forced and unnatural, the situations lack credibility, and the characters' motivations are not well developed. Instead of a coherent and well-constructed narrative, the movie feels like a collection of disconnected scenes that attempt to move the story forward without much success. There is no real buildup of tension or significant character development, making the experience even more frustrating.

The movie's direction does not help improve the situation either. The action sequences lack impact, the cinematography is generic, and the editing is clumsy in several key scenes. Instead of utilizing visual resources to heighten the story's intensity, the film settles for a basic and uninspired execution. This makes many scenes that should be exciting feel dull and lacking in dynamism.

Additionally, the soundtrack fails to add anything significant to the film. The background music is generic and does not help reinforce the emotions or tension of the scenes. Instead of a memorable composition that accompanies the story, we get a musical accompaniment that simply exists without adding real value to the cinematic experience.

In conclusion, "Unstoppable" is a movie that disappoints in every aspect. With a recycled plot, mediocre performances, a weak script, and uninspired direction, the film fails to stand out in the oversaturated world of action cinema. Jennifer Lopez appears exhausted, Jharrel Jerome is unconvincing, and Don Cheadle simply adds nothing to the project. The story lacks originality and moments that truly justify its existence. What should be a thrilling action film turns into a boring and tedious experience, with nothing that truly makes it worthwhile. Ultimately, "Unstoppable" is a cinematic failure that proves that a star-studded cast is not enough to make a good movie. For those looking for a genuine and exciting action experience, there are many other much more recommendable options than this bland and predictable production.

Inspirational

I recently came across an inspiring movie that tells the remarkable story of Robles, a gifted athlete born with only one leg. The film meticulously chronicles his extraordinary journey, showcasing the myriad challenges he faces and the unwavering determination that fuels his passion for wrestling. While the narrative is centered around the sport, it delves much deeper, conveying a powerful and uplifting message about perseverance and the relentless pursuit of dreams against all odds. Through a combination of hard work, resilience, and wise choices, Robles demonstrates that even the loftiest of achievements can be realized, inspiring viewers to embrace their own struggles and strive for greatness.

Moving And Inspiring Film Offering An Authentic Narrative That Sheds Light On Anthony Robles' Incredible Life

Unstoppable is a moving film based on a true story. It's inspiring and offers an authentic narrative that sheds light on Anthony Robles' incredible life with great acting and a beautiful storyline.

Anthony Robles (Jharrel Jerome) is a wrestler who's missing a leg. He comes from a dysfunctional family as his father is abusive and comes and goes as he pleases. The story begins at Robles' senior year of highschool as he is applying to colleges while competing in many wrestling matches. He takes the daring choice to walk onto ASU, one of the top schools for wrestling. Not sure if he has what it takes or not, but with support from his siblings, Anthony makes the team and finds his place. He is faced with the match of his life as he competes with his biggest opponent his senior year of college. To Anthony this match means more than just winning, it is an opportunity for people to look up to him for who he is, not what he's missing.

This beautiful story is accompanied by a fantastic cast. Jharrel Jerome's portrayal of Anthony is the heart of this film. He has such great dynamics throughout the film, which truly demonstrate Anthony's personal and emotional growth, along with his physical growth throughout his training. The stunts are done by Anthony Robles himself, making this film all that more special. Jenifer Lopez, as Anthony's mom (Judy), also delivers a great performance. Her character shows a different side of Anthony's story - together the two actors have a lovely chemistry which is so vital to the story. Micheal Peña, who is a Latino Hollywood gem, plays Anthony's coach in the film, and is great as always. Don Cheadle, who plays Anthony's college coach, is another amazing actor who delivers a terrific performance. On the surface, the film seems to be a typical sports drama, however director William Goldenberg allows the story to shine on its own. I love when stories show awareness of unknown heroes; I am unfamiliar with wrestling, but watching this film was so inspiring and uplifting. I also love that it goes beyond being a stereotypical story of an athlete striving to reach to the top. I also really enjoyed the cinematography by Salvatore Totino. The cinematography reflects the way Anthony feels internally - his lows are shown in varied gray and cool tones; his highs are brightly and vibrantly colored, which brings life to his story.

The film's message is to persevere and fight for your dreams. Be aware that there are some violent scenes and strong language.

I give Unstoppable 4 out of 5 stars and recommend it for ages 12 to 18. It is available to watch now in theaters or on Amazon Prime. By Zoe C., KIDS FIRST!
