The volume of violence in filmmaker Pulkit’ s Maalik would surprise and shock only those who haven’t seen his outstanding series, Bhakshak, which was about sexual violence.
Maalik is about the politics of violence. And the violence In politics. It is set in the city of Amitabh Bachchan, Allahabad, and there are some delectable references to the Superstar. I especially liked Rajkummar Rao’s deadpan response after a shootout in a movie theatre: “Manoranjan mein hinsa?!”
Writer-director Pulkit does the opposite: hinsa mein manoranjan. There is much to be said about a film that peels off layer after layer of commissioned violence in the Uttar Pradesh of the 1990s—long before Yogi’s operation cleanup—to reveal what we already know: the more we use violence as a tool of protest, the more its chances of becoming nothing but a weapon of mass destruction.
Would it be politically correct...

Subhash K Jha revisits Zoya Akhtar’s Dil Dhadakne Do, which released 10 years ago. The director also speaks about the film that featured the brilliant cast of Anil Kapoor, Shefali Shah, Priyanka Chopra, Ranveer Singh, Anushka Sharma, and Farhan Akhtar
Dil Dhadakne Do is a film about trying to follow the unpredictable rhythms of the song of life. It’s a very elitist film. Oh, yes! The problems faced by the rich going on a trip to bankruptcy, Mehra family are peculiar to the privileged classes. In fact, in one of the film’s funniest scenes- and there are countless of those, let me assure you- Priyanka’s hypochondriac mother-in-law (Zarina Wahab) asks the younger woman what the problem is after her Bahu says she wants to leave her husband because she is not happy in the marriage.
“Problem kya hai?!” the bewildered mother-in-law asks. And she may well have a point.

Subhash K Jha looks back at the 2005 Ram Gopal Varma drama D, which starred Randeep Hooda, in a new installment of This Day That Year.
After Ram Gopal Varma’s Satya and Company, after Mahesh Manjrekar’s Vaastav and Hansal Mehta’s Chhal D gives us this day our daily dread… Enough about unwashed men washing their conscience in the blood of the slain. Enough of this swivel-and-snarl routine with blood-red eyes, slurring speech, and smoking guns.
That reminds me…. Why are the censors so worried about smoking people when they should be concerned about those blazing guns that signal urban anarchy? In places D glamorizes violence with disdainful words and crackerjack visuals to a point where you wonder whom the script supports.
“Why do people look at us as freaks? We’re just doing our jobs like doctors and engineers,” Deshu tells his ‘gori chamri’ girlfriend. That’s how...

Yuva, which was released on May 21, 2004 is that rarity which can be watched both as an entertainer and a vehicle for projecting socio-political ideas. The easiest thing in the world is to sneer at someone who attempts to be unconventional through conventional routes. In that sense, Mani Ratnam and Michael Mukherjee, his protagonist in his latest film, share the same predicament.
Like Ajay Devgan’s fascinating character, who wants to bring about a change in the social order, Ratnam’s cinema signifies tremendous leaps in the way we perceive popular entertainment in this country.
A riveting blend of social message and entertainment is what sets Yuva apart. Like Ratnam’s first Hindi film Dil Se, Yuva is an extremely restless film about young characters who are on the lookout for a relevance to their existence. Amitabh Bachchan In A Villainous Role In Aankhen ( Photo Credit – YouTube; Instagram )
All diehard movie buffs must have watched Vipul Amrutlal Shah’s 2002 heist thriller Aankhen. But are you aware of an interesting behind-the-scenes story about how the filmmaker got legendary actor Amitabh Bachchan on board as the film’s main villain, and that too without a script?
How Amitabh Bachchan Got On Board Without a Script
In a recent interview, Vipul Amrutlal Shah revealed that when he approached Amitabh Bachchan to narrate the story of Aankhen, he was asked to explain the film’s plot in fifteen minutes. Amitabh Bachchan liked the story and asked him for a full narration after three days at his home, Jalsa. But interestingly, Vipul Shah didn’t have a proper script then. So, he called his co-writer, Aatish Kapadia, and told him that they would have to write the whole script in three...

Heavyweight panels at Mumbai’s inaugural World Audio Visual Entertainment Summit (Waves) saw entertainment powerhouses converge to explore the evolving relationship between content creators and audiences in the digital streaming era.
Netflix India’s VP of Content Monika Shergill examined how deeply personal stories can become global phenomena. “The audience is always telling us something – they want stories that reflect their lives, their aspirations, and sometimes, offer a beautiful escape,” Shergill noted, pointing to the international success of period drama “Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar” as a prime example of locally-rooted content achieving worldwide appeal.
Slb Productions CEO Prerna Singh revealed that “Heeramandi,” which eventually resonated in over 43 countries, was initially conceived as a film before evolving into a series format. “We poured everything into it – the cinematic grandeur, the Shahi Mahal, and the untold story of freedom that deserved its place in history,” Singh said.

Most films demand your attention with dramatic twists, sweeping scores, and explosive emotions. “Three of Us” does something far more radical. It asks for your silence. Avinash Arun’s 2023 masterpiece isn’t just a film about impending memory loss; it’s a meditation on how places become the keepers of our histories when our minds can no longer hold them. While critics rightly praise Shefali Shah’s devastatingly restrained performance, what often goes unspoken is how the film’s genius lies in its spaces – the crumbling school buildings, the relentless coastline, the hollowed-out homes – all of which remember Shailaja even as she forgets herself.
The government school in Konkan isn’t just a backdrop. It’s a silent witness, a repository of everything Shailaja once was. The camera lingers on the details most films would treat as set dressing: the peeling blue paint on the walls, the rusted chains of...

To celebrate noted actor Akshaye Khanna, Subhash K Jha revisits his brilliant performance in 2007’s Gandhi, My Father. Plus, we hear the actor’s thoughts on this role.
In Feroz Abbas Khan’s Gandhi, My Father, Akshaye Khanna was stunning as Mahatma Gandhi’s troubled son Harilal.
Father to the nation, but not to his own son. Great theme.
Huge historical resonances as the father and son happen to be Mahatma Gandhi and his little-known son Harilal. What interesting possibilities of drama open up before our eyes as we think of the father and son locked in a mutual admonition society against the backdrop of a demanding, politically anguished nation?
Gandhi, My Father attempts to convey the jumbo-sized canvas of the fight that the Father Of The Nation fought within and outside his home. The director, Feroz Abbas Khan, had his own creative battle to fight. Simply put, you can...

Finally, the truth. Subhash Ghai’s most atypical film Black & White, released on March 7, 2008, was a blatant ripoff of Alan Pakula’s The Devil’s Own. Although Ghai denied the comparison, the similarities are too many to ignore. Subhash Ghai ventures into a territory that would characteristically be considered uninviting for an escapist entertainer.
It’s a well-crafted, finely written, and packaged piece of cinema done with more heartfelt Gandhian articulations than most recent films, which have merchandized poor Gandhiji in Munna-tones of bubble-gum philosophy.
You don’t often come away from a film disturbed yet hopeful about the distending dimensions of modern-day violence and terrorism. We did it in Mani Ratnam’s Dil Se, Gulzar’s Maachis, and Santosh Sivan’s Terrorist. Now we feel a genuine concern for the collapse of Gandhi’s secular dream in India, as Chandni Chowk (which is rapidly becoming a favourite haunting-ground for...

Karthik Calling Karthik is an interesting if flawed fable of the damned. The protagonist is Karthik (Farhan Akhtar), so timid he could merge into the woodwork of his office if only the decor was not so much glass and papier-mache.
Karthik is bullied by his boss, sniggered at by his smarter (read: less sensitive) colleagues, and absentmindedly ignored by the beauty in the beastly workplace whom Karthik gazes at sideways and writes scores of unsent e-mail to. She’s the unattainable beauty. He’s King Kong without the imposing grandeur to protest against his malfunctional existence.
This is the world of Rocket Singh without the turban and the placidity. While Shimit Amin’s Rocket Singh Salesman Of The Year was about an office-goer who craved for acceptance, Karthik just wants to be less unhappy in his space. It’s not too much to ask for. But who’s listening? Except...

There are so many stories related to the making of Ram Gopal Varma’s Satya, it is hard to tell the trees from the wood, so to speak. The film has been mythologised beyond a reasonable pout. And I do mean pout, what with the film’s leading lady doing a facsimile of an authentic Mumbai working girl.
Urmila Matondkar plays a struggling singer who sings in Lataji’s voice, and gets propositioned by a music director(the late Neeraj Vora) who tells her, ‘Talent is okay, but what else do you have to offer?’
One could ask Ram Gopal Varma the same question. He brings together a gallery of outstanding actors in Satya. But most of the players are swamped by sinking sense of sketchiness, even the protagonist: where does Satya(a subdued J. D. Chakravarthy) come from, why does he behave like a trained Ninja when he is supposedly a virgin to violence?...

On October 2nd, we celebrate Gandhi Jayanti, marking the birth of Mahatma Gandhi, a global symbol of peace, non-violence, and justice. Born in 1869, Gandhi’s philosophy of ahimsa (non-violence) and satyagraha (truth and resistance) transformed India’s struggle for independence into a moral revolution. His unwavering commitment to civil disobedience inspired global movements for human rights, from Martin Luther King Jr. in America to Nelson Mandela in South Africa. Gandhi’s ideology transcended political boundaries, leaving a lasting imprint on the world—and even the film industry. Filmmakers across continents have sought to capture his life and ideals on screen, creating enduring works that not only tell the story of Gandhi but also remind audiences of the power of truth, empathy, and resistance in the face of injustice. Through cinema, Gandhi’s legacy continues to inspire generations, proving that his teachings remain as relevant today as ever. To honor his memory,...

New Delhi, March 7 (Ians) Despite being an acclaimed TV actress who’s best known for her character Angoori Bhabhi, Shubhangi Atre, has experienced all the problems a single mother has to face in a patriarchal society.

On the eve of International Women’s Day, Atre opened her heart out and talked at length about ‘naari shakti’, and her journey as single mother, daughter, etc.
Talking to Ians, Atre, who plays Angoori Bhabhi in the popular sitcom ‘Bhabiji Ghar Par Hain’, said she celebrates Women’s Day “every day” because she is a single mother.
“We are three sisters and it was from our father that we inherited the spirit of fighting back,” Atre said.
“My father never let us feel we are lesser than men.

Actor Jaideep Ahlawat, who is known for ‘Gangs of Wasseypur’, ‘Paatal Lok’, ‘Gabbar is Back’ and ‘Raazi’, feels that the medium of audio storytelling enhances the imagination of the audience in a big way. The actor recently lent his voice to the Hindi version of the Marvel superhero Hawkeye in the audio podcast ‘Marvel’s Wastelanders’.
Talking about the same, Jaideep told Ians: “Audio storytelling enhances your imagination a lot more compared to the visual medium. In old times, grandmothers used to narrate fables to the kids, that too was audio-driven storytelling and what it did to kids was it opened up their imagination.”
“Those fables gave the power of a vivid imagination to kids as they pictured in their minds the characters and the world of the story narrated to them. So, audio storytelling is more fun and exciting because it demands an active participation of the listener,” he added.
