After a banner 2021 for high-end genre films, industry vets are hopeful that the fantastic can resurrect the corpse of pre-covid theatrical distribution.

As bolts of lightning reanimated the body of Frankenstein’s monster, Julia Ducournau’s “Titane,” which turned heads when it took the Palme d’Or at Cannes, and Sundance Grand Jury prize-winner “Nanny,” a supernatural tale from director Nikyatu Jusu, have revitalized the festival scene.

While “Nanny” may have been the jewel in the genre crown at Sundance, the influence that genre cinema held over 2022’s first major festival was wide-ranging and undeniable. Chloe Okuno’s psychological thriller “Watcher” impressed — segueing into several sales deals — as did Hanna Bergholm’s psycho-horror feature “Hatching,” sold by Wild Bunch and Charades-sold Spanish standout “Piggy,” the follow-up to Carlota Pereda’s 2019 Spanish Academy Award-winner “Cerdita.”

Action-drama “The Way,” written and directed by Dastan Khalili, has been picked up for international sales by Iuvit Media Sales. Iuvit will launch sales at the upcoming European Film Market (Feb. 10-17). The film stars Eli Jane.

The movie opened for domestic theatrical release on Nov. 12 in Los Angeles, and premiered on demand in the U.S. across multiple platforms on Jan. 4, distributed by Gravitas Ventures.

Described as “an intense film about acceptance in the most extreme of places and circumstances,” “The Way” has nabbed 36 U.S. and international prizes, including at the New York Movie Awards, Paris Film Awards and IndieFest Film Awards.

Exclusive: The 100 leads Eliza Taylor and Bob Morley have been set to star in sci-fi thriller I’ll Be Watching, which Iuvit Media Sales is launching for the virtual EFM.

Currently shooting in Atlanta, Georgia, Taylor will play a woman trapped in her isolated new home who becomes caught in a fight for survival. Morley will play her tech expert husband.

Supporting cast includes David Keith (An Officer And A Gentleman), Bryan Batt (12 Years A Slave) and Hannah Fierman (VHS).

Produced by Benacus Entertainment in association with Rnf Productions, the project is being directed by Erik Bernard (Free Dead Or Alive).

Script was penned by Sara Sometti Michaels (St. Agatha) and Elisa Manzini (Angel Baby). Eliza Taylor and David Keith (An Officer And A Gentleman) serve as executive producers.
