You’ve heard of the Boy Who Lived, but what about When Lightning Strikes?
That’s the buzzworthy pitch from Anna Klassen, who has officially made the cut for 2017’s Black List – an annual rundown of the best unproduced screenplays bouncing around Hollywood. Placing a laser focus on J.K. Rowling (Harry Potter), When Lightning Strikes has been described as the “true story of 25-year-old Joanne Rowling as she weathers first loves, unexpected pregnancies, lost jobs, and depression on her journey to create Harry Potter.” For the record, Klassen’s spec script also landed on the 2017 Hit List.
All of this has led to a groundswell of support for When Lightning Strikes, which will seemingly be more of an intimate, character-driven drama than the fantastical saga of witches and wizards that cemented J.K. Rowling’s name in the history books.
No word yet on whether Klassen’s script has attracted the interest of studios,...

Stranger Things producer and director Shawn Levy is looking to team up with Fox on a new sci-fi film project called Crater. According to Variety, the film is a "coming-of-age story in the vein of Stand By Me, set on a moon colony." Color me intrigued!
The spec script, which was voted #1 on the Tracking Board’s 2015 Hit List and was #5 on the 2015 Black List, was written by John J. Griffin. This is the description of the story that was released:
After the death of his father, a boy growing up on a lunar mining colony takes a trip to explore a mysterious crater, along with his four best friends, prior to being permanently relocated to another planet.
I love what I'm hearing and this seems like it would be an awesome project for Shawn Levy to take on! Sounds like the kind of film that he could also cast...

Director Allan Ungar might have found his next big actioner in Decoy, a project with some compelling star power in Frank Grillo (The Purge: Anarchy), Andy Garcia (The Untouchables) and Tyler Posey (Teen Wolf). Written by David Benullo, the story centers on an identity thief who becomes hunted by the Nsa after he steals the identity of a wanted man. The script was featured on the 2014 Hit List which tracks well-liked, unproduced work. Ungar's last film was the raucous 80s throwback Gridlocked, which channeled the fun of buddy cop films like Lethal Weapon and The Hard Way. That film starred Dominic Purcell, Stephen Lang and Danny Glover and is available on Netflix. The Hollywood Reporter has the scoop on the film and the fact...

Imagine “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’s” Dennis Reynolds as an honors biology teacher in high school. That’s the basic premise behind NBC’s “A.P. Bio,” which has been firmly greenlighted to series.
Glenn Howerton stars as Jack, a philosophy scholar who goes to work as a high school Advanced Placement biology teacher after he loses out on his dream job. Soon he decides, instead of actually teaching any biology, to use the honor roll students to his own benefit.

“As of right now there is still no conclusive evidence connecting the dots that the Trump campaign colluded with Russia to help him win the presidency, but there are so many dots,” Seth Meyers said last night while opening to his popular political segment, A Closer Look. “The Trump presidency is basically a six-year-old with chicken pox. And the rest of us are really f*cking itchy.”
Meyers went on to play a clip of former Trump national security advisor Michael Flynn saying that if someone asks for immunity, it usually means they’ve committed a crime. (Last week, Flynn offered information to the FBI in exchange for immunity.)

In 2012, two years before journalist Gabriel Sherman published his biography about Roger Ailes, the Fox News CEO sent out a detailed memo within the news network entitled "To: Interested Parties." "Re: Gabriel Sherman." The 400-page memo appeared to be "opposition research" about Sherman, who Ailes viewed as an enemy, according to CNNMoney. The memo, sent to CNN by two anonymous sources, included a section called the "Gabriel Sherman Hit List," a rundown of his reporting and comments on Republican leaders and Fox News personnel. It included Sherman's address, voter registration information, property records and a note from researchers that

Pandemic is a found footage film that never manages to feel like one because of it’s passion. Every little detail has been looked after here, and that might be half the reason it works. The beautiful sense of place, and gory action makes for a piece of worthwhile piece.
The plot here is simple. A few operatives are sent into a quarantine zone to retrieve a lost team. Lauren (Rachel Nichols) is the protagonist, and the audience Pov character (quite literally) but is hiding something
The fact is found footage is best used to either allow for creeping horror (as in Paranormal Activity 1) or putting the audience in a full on immersive intense situation (as in Cloverfield). Pandemic might benefit from falling a little bit into both. Pandemic does have a fast pace allowing only some of the suspense to really pay off, but...

So far we’ve run through our lists of the top trailers, breakout stars, posters, and movies of the year in neatly packaged lists, but what about those note-worthy moments that defy categorization? Welcome to the Hit List, the Best of the Rest, for those movies, moments, and people that just don’t quite fit anywhere else. We’re looking at you, Mortdecai.
We’ve honoured everything from hairpieces to grills in years’ past , and this year’s Hit List covers the wacky, weird, and wonderful at the movies in 2015. Our Best of the Rest list aims to find those throw away gems and shine light on their greatness (or lack thereof) and give props to some people – and animals – who reached peak greatness this year.
Let's get started. Best Part-time Rogue: Mortdecai It’s hard to believe anyone involved in this project thought this bizarre and terribly unfunny caper was a good idea.

Verve, a Los Angeles-based talent and literary agency, has announced the creation of Verve Ventures, a global business development initiative within the company that will be run by international sales veteran Amy Beecroft.
Beecroft brings to Verve a wealth of experience, having worked at many of the top companies in the international space during her career: First Look/Overseas Film Group, HBO, GreeneStreet Films, and FilmNation to name a few.
Verve Ventures will focus on creative strategic partnerships in the international and domestic film and television space, including finance and sales, digital distribution, and the development of new technologies, such as Virtual Reality, on a global scale.
“The international landscape has changed drastically in the last five years. With 70% of the box office coming from the international marketplace, savvy foreign distributors, producers, and financiers alike are looking to establish new and strategic partnerships on both the theatrical and television sides,” said Beecroft. “With Verve representing some of the best directors and writers in the business, I feel we are uniquely positioned to find new and exciting ways to expand our clients’ reach into the global marketplace. I am absolutely thrilled to be part of the Verve family.”
Verve partners said in a statement: "With the exponential growth and importance of the overseas marketplace, being able to draw from an international viewpoint will be the best way to serve our clients moving forward and we believe that Amy is the best person to lead the way in this space.”
Verve is a talent and literary agency on the vanguard of client representation. During the past five years, the agency has built an impressive roster of Oscar, Emmy, WGA, BAFTA, and Spirit Award winning writers and directors. Verve’s clients are writing and directing for every major motion picture and television studio and packaging their own passion projects for the large and small screen.
Verve is also the only agency seriously representing content creators in the burgeoning Virtual Reality space and consistently has a major presence on the coveted Black List, including 2014’s number one script, "Cathrine the Great," by Kristina Lauren Anderson. Anderson’s script also topped The Tracking Board’s 2014 Hit List, where Verve is the only agency to show positive growth over all five years of the List. Going back to my failure to get on-board with the Soul Patrol, I'm accustomed to supporting Katharine McPhee in ill-fated circumstances. It's no wonder, then, that we're simpatico when it comes to Karen Cartwright losing the Tony to Ivy Lynn. "That's a great question," McPhee says when I inquire about her disappointment regarding this fictional theater award. "I wanted Karen to win!" "[M]y heart kind of like broke for her," McPhee admits. "I'm like, 'Really? She ends up with this loser guy who goes to jail and she can't even win the Tony?' And she has to have this nasty catfight with a girl who she could have potentially had a great relationship with? And she can't win the Tony. At least she got to play Marilyn for a little bit." Scott called Stiles (Dylan O’Brien) to help him and the two try to break the news to him that he may turn into a werewolf, but they end up scaring him more than anything else and Liam escapes from Scott’s house before they can tell him exactly what he is going to be.
The next day at school, Liam’s ankle is completely healed, as is the bite Scott left on his arm. Scott and Stiles corner him at school again,...

Though Gladiator filmmaker Ridley Scott is still in post-production putting the final touches on his upcoming Biblical epic Exodus: Gods and Kings, the director is already planning to bring another fabled Biblical hero to the big screen. This time, Scott has set his sights on the story of David, said to have become the king of Israel after slaying the giant Goliath in his youth with a stone from his sling.
However, Scott (who is not signed to direct yet but has boarded as a producer) won’t be centering on the battle between David and Goliath – the film is reported to instead follow David through his post-Goliath years, during his reign as the king of Israel. Jonathan Stokes, who has written four Black List scripts in three years and had a record four scripts recognized on the Hit List for most-liked but unproduced spec scripts, will be penning the screenplay.

Lance Henriksen has been working steadily in the movies (and television) for decades now, and he has the elongated IMDb page to prove it. Even with nearly 200 titles to his name though he will most likely always be remembered for his work through the ’80s in films like The Terminator, Near Dark, Aliens, Pumpkinhead and more. Those films share something more than simple genre though — they’re also loaded with still memorable practical effects work. Granted, it was the ’80s, and CGI wasn’t exactly a known quantity, but the fact remains that nearly thirty years later we’re still impressed and affected by the scene in Aliens where Bishop (Henriksen) is grabbed by the alien queen, ripped in half and thrown along the floor. It’s accomplished with practical visual effects, and when the artists who crafted the scene (Alec Gillis and Tom Woodruff Jr. of StudioADI ) set out to make their own Kickstarter-funded movie this...

Although their show has been off the air since this past May, costars Katharine McPhee and Megan Hilty will have a mini-"Smash" reunion on a comedy web show, with hints at their performances being musical.
In the announcement for "It Could Be Worse," McPhee and Hilty are shown in an Instagram video sight-reading the lyrics to Lorde's "Royals." Watch the ten-second clip of the two starlets below. Warning: prepare to beg for more.
It's not yet known when in Season 2 of "It Could Be Worse" McPhee and Hilty will make their appearance, or what roles they'll take. "It Could Be Worse" stars "Smash" alum Wesley Taylor (Bobby, Seasons 1 and 2) as Jacob, a Broadway wannabe looking to make it big in a New York minute. Although he was cast in his first big Broadway show, he's often stuck at home tending to a needy long-term boyfriend, or is held back by his overbearing parents.

Inspired by true events that shocked the world and to this day still frighten and fascinate, The House at the End of the Drive was shot on location on Cielo Drive… just a knife’s throw away from the site of the Manson/Tate murders.
Produced by the homeowner David Oman, the movie blends fact with fiction as supernatural forces from the past transport he and his dinner guests through time -- back to the night of the original murders.
The movie recently enjoyed a big red carpet gala premiere in Hollywood at Shockfest (where it took home “Best Writer” honors in the closing Awards). We were lucky enough to catch up with Oman for this exclusive interview.
Dread Central: I’ve been hearing about your haunted house for years, but I never did have the, er, pleasure of visiting. I recall, a few years back, you used to host film screenings and tours.

Kinda. Sorta. Well, not really. But for a few brief, shining moments on Dec. 9 and 10, a gaggle of alumni from NBC’s failed musical experiment banded together to put on a show: a concert version of Hit List, the hip downtown musical that tried to wrest our attention from Bombshell in season 2.

It's been 7 months since Smash's swan song aired on NBC and somehow, in the fat lady's aftermath, all the things I hated about the series (ludicrous plot twists, inexplicable character motivations, "dramaturgs") have faded away and I've come to find an enduring appreciation for the show's seriously splendid songs.
While Bombshell, the Marilyn Monroe musical at the center of the series, scored a proper CD release, Hit List, the season two musical that served as stiff Tony competition, never received the same treatment despite boasting infectious tunes that could absolutely hold their own on The Great White Way.
Now, 54 Below, in cooperation with Smash Ep Josh Safran, is giving Hit List the proper stage it deserves with four sold-out performances, starring Jeremy Jordan, Andy Mientus & Krysta Rodriguez. I caught up with Jeremy Jordan this weekend to talk about the excitement -- and vindication -- that comes from stepping back into Jimmy's shoes, to find out...

I mean, that’s like an atrocity as far as Kermit is concerned, right?
Discovery is working on a mafia drama from the writer of Goodfellas according to The Hollywood Reporter. The Five Families is planned as the first drama to dramatize actual events and real people.

New York's 54 Below has just announced a two-nights-only performance of the fictional, Rent-esque musical that kept Katherine McPhee’s character employed during the show’s second season. Smash alums Jeremy Jordan, Krysta Rodriguez, and Andy Mientus are set to star and showrunner Joshua Safran is also involved. The concert will feature Hit List songs written by Drew Gasparini, Joe Iconis, Andrew McMahon, Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, and ...

This morning, it was announced that Hit List, one of the fictional musicals from NBC’s dearly departed drama Smash, will be performed at 54 Below in New York City. Smash stars (and Hit List composers/performers) Jeremy Jordan, Andy Mientus, and Krysta Rodriguez, will star in the show, which will be presented by Julia Brownell, ex-Smash showrunner Joshua Safran, and Jennifer Ashley Tepper. A release describes Hit List as “a modern fable about identity and the price of fame” that “tells the tragic love story of a wannabe pop singer who transforms herself to become a star and the...

"I tried my best to approach it like I would any song that I would write for myself," McMahon, 30, tells The Hollywood Reporter. "I liked the theme and the idea of this guy who is still
