Derek A.E. Fuhrman Dies: Award-Winning Songwriter & Producer Was 44
Image
Derek A.E. Fuhrman, a songwriter who co-penned American Idol winner Philip Phillips’ hit “Gone, Gone, Gone” and worked with acts including O.A.R., Goo Goo Dolls, Five for Fighting and Kygo, has died. He was 44.

A family rep told Deadline that Fuhrman died June 27 of oral cancer in Nashville.

Fuhrman started in the music business while attending the University of Delaware, where he fronted a band called Omnisoul, later renamed The Crash Motive. The group enjoyed regional success and ultimately signed with Sony BMG, recording an album and doing national tours. Some of the band’s music was used in films, TV and video games.

Transitioning to a solo career in Los Angeles and later Nashville, Fuhrmann penned a string of award-winning songs, most notably co-authoring “Gone, Gone, Gone” with Season 11 American Idol winner Phillips, which went double-platinum and topped Billboard’s Adult Alternative and Adult Contemporary charts...

NYC Web Fest Now Accepting Podcasts for 2025 Festival
Image
NYC Web Fest (Nycwf), the city’s first web series festival, is proud to announce the inclusion of podcasts as an official category in its 12th annual celebration of indie storytelling. This year’s festival will take place October 3–5, 2025 in New York City, with submissions open now through July 31st via NYCWebFest.com.

Founded in 2014, NYC Web Fest was the first festival in New York to champion web series. Over the years, the fest has grown to include TV pilots, short films, and micro-episodes. With the rise of narrative and nonfiction podcasting, the festival now expands again — this time embracing audio storytelling.

“We launched NYC Web Fest to shine a light on the creativity we saw exploding online. Now, with the evolution of digital storytelling, it’s only natural we open the door to podcasters too,” said Nycwf Founder Lauren Atkins. “Web series were once considered fringe — now they’re launching careers.

'40 Acres': 'Carry-On' Star's Post-Apocalyptic Thriller Hits Theaters Next Month
Image
If you heard the buzz coming out of the Toronto International Film Festival last year about 40 Acres but haven't been able to track it down, you're finally in luck. The post-apocalyptic action thriller starring Carry-On's Danielle Deadwyler is set to hit theaters on July 2, and based on its 100% Rotten Tomatoes score, this is one you're not going to want to miss.

Now, admittedly, 40 Acres will only be receiving a limited theatrical release, so it might not be playing at a cinema near you, but you should still keep it on your radar for when it eventually makes its way to streaming. Called an "entertaining edge of your seat thriller" by critic Courtney Small, the Canadian film features an eclectic mix of Black and Indigenous actors, including Kataem O'Connor, Michael Greyeyes, and Jaeda LeBlanc (Gen V). Directed by R.T. Thorne – who's primarily made his name directing episodes of TV shows like Kung Fu,...

‘Schitt’s Creek’ Cast: What Are They Doing in 2025?
Image
“You can’t always get what you want… but if you try sometimes, you just might find—you get what you need.” — The Rolling Stones weren’t talking about Schitt’s Creek, but boy, does it hit home.

When we first stumbled on this Canadian TV sitcom, we thought it was just another fish-out-of-water sitcom. But by the time it bid adieu in 2020, it had carved a place in pop culture with the precision of a jeweler setting a rare gem. Created by the father-son powerhouse Eugene and Dan Levy, Schitt’s Creek turned Emmy-slayer, flipped the script on what small-town stories could be.

Eugene Levy once told The New York Times, “Isn’t that the perfect way to go?” when they chose to end the show after six stellar seasons. But let’s not cry over spilled milk—every cast member has been busy sprinkling their magic elsewhere. Let’s peel...

Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back Happened Thanks To This Kevin Smith Cameo
Image
Before the dawn of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, franchise films used to be made in a far more improvised fashion. Nowadays, we're used to studios and filmmakers having a several-year plan in place for an interlocking series of films and their respective franchises, and while this system can create some very rewarding emotional and narrative payoffs, it doesn't allow for the freedom of spontaneity as much. With this freedom, filmmakers were able to follow their muse to places they previously had never thought of going to, and it's not just characters or moments that were thought up on the fly; in some cases, an entire film came into existence based on a chance encounter.

That's exactly what happened to Kevin Smith during his primary years making films set in his View Askewniverse, named after the View Askew production company he created when he began making movies. Initially, these films were...

Pluto TV Wants To Be Your One-Stop-Shop For Christmas Streaming – Here's What You Can Watch

It's the holiday season, so hoop-de-do and dickory dock, and don't forget to hang up your sock so you have more time to rot on the couch in front of the TV watching all of your holiday favorites. Perhaps it's because I'm no longer at the age where turning my hands bright purple to make snowballs or risk popping my hip out of place to go sledding down a hill sound appealing, but the holiday season for me has turned into watching as many festive films and TV shows as my eyeballs can handle and desperately trying not to burn my house down making too many cookies. Unfortunately, watching seasonal movies can be a bit difficult this time of year. Unless a streaming service is trying to entice new subscribers with playlists of the best films in its catalogs, many of these classics end up back on video on demand...

Why Did Nina Dobrev Leave Vampire Diaries?
Image
The Vampire Diaries star Nina Dobrev shocked fans in 2015 by leaving the teen supernatural drama on The CW in its sixth season. The adaptation based on the popular series of vampire novels by L.J. Smith continued for two more seasons without her. That was unexpected, at least given Hollywood conventional wisdom. Dobrev's character, Elena Gilbert, one of many she played, lost her parents in a car crash and served as the series' main protagonist. Critics and fans wondered if the drama could continue with the rest of the ensemble cast.

The other central characters were vampire brothers Damon and Stefan Salvatore, played by Ian Somerhalder and Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' Paul Wesley. The show later reveals Stefan arrived after the accident and saved Elena. Throughout The Vampire Diaries, Elena finds herself in a love triangle with the two brothers as they attempt to protect her from supernatural forces threatening her town.

‘Brilliant Minds’ Boss Says Oliver Sacks’ Life Inspired Premiere’s Big Twist: ‘There’s a Lot to Dig Into’
Image
Note: This story contains spoilers from the “Brilliant Minds” series premiere.

“Brilliant Minds” introduces Zachary Quinto as Dr. Oliver Wolf, a neurologist whose unique life and skillset is loosely drawn from the acclaimed Oliver Sacks — down to the complex relationships laid out the NBC procedural’s pilot.

“It’s a contemporary version of that character, but it’s not biographical,” showrunner Michael Grassi told TheWrap. “Oliver Sacks lived such a … robust, incredible life and to have that as inspiration, and as a jumping off point has been so helpful … to build this really fascinating character at the center of our medical show.”

Pulling from access to two of Sack’s books — “The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat” and “An Anthropologist on Mars” — Grassi drew from Sacks’ prosopagnosia, also known as face blindness, to craft Oliver’s character. The cognitive disorder, which is revealed in the premiere episode,...

A Controversial Episode of Degrassi Was Banned in the US for 2 Years
Image
Degrassi: The Next Generation was certainly no stranger to controversial subject matter throughout its fourteen-season run. But in 2004, the show aired what arguably became its most notorious episode, which was banned from the American airwaves for over two years. Titled "Accidents Will Happen," the episode aired in two parts on CTV in Canada but wouldn't see the light of day on the U.S. network that aired Degrassi episodes during its original release.

This refusal to air the episode sparked outrage among loyal Degrassi fans in America. That's not to mention confusion among the show's actors and creative staff, who couldn't understand why this episode, more so than any other, was deemed too much for American audiences to handle. However, anyone familiar enough with U.S. politics over the years could probably guess what had happened. After all, "Accidents Will Happen" dealt with one of the most polarizing topics in American society: teen pregnancy.

This 22-Year-Old Disney Movie May Have a Hidden Meaning Most Fans Missed
Image
Cadet Kelly is a 2002 Disney Channel film starring Hilary Duff that people have read as containing queer-coded themes for years. In Cadet Kelly, Kelly goes to a military school against her will. Her personality clashes with Captain Jessica Stone, with whom she has a love-hate relationship. The movie contains scenes, motifs, and themes that resonate among the LGBTQ+ community.

The 2000s were filled with many classic romantic and comedy movies about teenage life. Mean Girls is a clear example of a high school-set film transcending time. However, Cadet Kelly, released on Disney Channel in 2002, was a unique approach to the genre. Not only does the film occur in a female military academy, which already goes against gender expectations, but Cadet Kelly also mainly focuses on female relationships, healthy family dynamics, and teenage identity.

Led by star Hilary Duff when she was only 15 years old, Cadet Kelly explores themes of individualism,...

Francine Pascal, ‘Sweet Valley High’ Creator, Dies at 92
Image
Francine Pascal, the author best known for creating hit teen book series “Sweet Valley High,” has died. She was 92.

Pascal died on Sunday in New York, the New York Times reports. The cause of death was lymphoma Pascal’s daughter, Laurie Wenk-Pascal, told the newspaper.

“Sweet Valley High” debuted in 1983 after a friend remarked to Pascal there was no teen version of 1980s soap “Dallas.” Pascal was reportedly inspired to create the series, about blonde Californian twins Jessica and Elizabeth Wakefield, immediately. The books went on to spawn hundreds of sequels and spin-offs detailing the twins at different ages, ranging from middle school to college. There were also some wackier books which saw the twins mixed up in murders and even supernatural events.

Only the first 12 books were written by Pascal although she wrote most of the outlines for the others. A TV adaptation of the books ran for four...

Nexstar Media Group’s CW Network has launched its latest free, ad-supported streaming television (Fast) channels through Amazon’s Fast platform, Freevee.

The channels — CW Gold and CW Forever — were quietly added to Freevee last week, The Desk can confirm. It marks the latest effort by the CW Network to build out its Fast business since broadcaster Nexstar acquired a majority stake in the network two years ago.

Distribution terms of the deal between the CW Network and Amazon were not available. The two channels were not initially offered through the CW Network’s own Fast platform — which recently became available through the CW app for Apple TV and iPhones — but the channels appeared on the web version of the CW Fast platform a few hours after this story was first published.

There are some shakeups happening in the All American universe.

With Ezra gone, the show will be taking a new direction that returns to its high school roots, focusing on telling the stories of some newly introduced younger characters.

That doesn’t necessarily mean that the entire original cast is taking a backseat. As the show is making this transition, showrunner Nkechi Okoro Carroll recognizes “you don’t want to do a clean sweep.”

10 TV Shows That Grew Alongside Their Audience
Image
Television shows that allow their characters to grow alongside their audiences hold a unique place in the hearts of viewers. They start with one or more main characters at early life stages and explore deeper themes and more challenging issues as those characters age, reflecting the journey of growing up.

Boy Meets World is a great example of a series that evolves naturally from themes of adolescence to high school and eventually college. As Cory and his friends grow, the storylines mature to address issues such as underage drinking and career choices. Similarly, Gilmore Girls follows the dynamic mother-daughter duo of Lorelai and Rory Gilmore from Rory's high school years into her post-college life, delving into topics like family bonds, professional ambition and love...

A Controversial Episode of Degrassi Was Banned in the US for 2 Years
Image
Degrassi: The Next Generation was certainly no stranger to controversial subject matter throughout its fourteen-season run, but in 2004, it aired what arguably became its most notorious episode, which was banned from the American airwaves for over two years. Titled "Accidents Will Happen," the episode aired in two parts on CTV in Canada but wouldn't see the light of day on the U.S. network that aired Degrassi episodes during its original release.

This refusal to air the episode sparked outrage among loyal Degrassi fans in America, not to mention confusion among the show's actors and creative staff, who couldn't understand why this episode, more so than any other, was deemed too much for American audiences to handle. Of course, anyone with more than passing familiarity with American politics over the years could probably guess what had happened. After all, "Accidents Will Happen" dealt with one of the most polarizing...

Box office: ‘Godzilla x Kong’ wins again as ‘Monkey Man’ bests ‘The First Omen’
Image
April began with showers, plus a tiny regional earthquake on the East Coast, but that didn’t keep anyone away from theaters, even if it was a slower weekend than much of March. Read on for the weekend box office report.

Despite dropping 60% from its fantastic opening weekend, it still was able to take first place with an estimated $31.7 million to bring its total to $135 million after crossing the $100 million mark in its first week. It also passed the $361 million mark globally, with another $59.3 million grossed overseas this weekend.

The weekend offered two new wide releases in Dev Patel‘s directorial debut, the action-thriller “Monkey Man,” and 20th Century’s horror prequel “The First Omen,” the former released into 3,029 theaters vs. “The First Omen’s” 3,375 theaters. “Monkey Man” came into the...
