Yesterday, the 2018 Cannes Film Festival lineup was announced bright and early. As always, it’s a moment in the cinematic year that marks a turning point of sorts. In fact, it really does seem like it positions us to start thinking about what might play on the festival circuit this fall. We’re a ways off, but with Cannes letting loose their news, the mind can tend to wander and start speculating. We already knew that Ron Howard’s Solo: A Star Wars story was a special early addition to the fest, having its premiere there. We also already had been told that Everybody Knows from Asghar Farhadi was the Opener. Now, we know much more. The crop of titles so far seems to have even more of an international flavor than usual. In fact, aside from the previously announced special screening of Howard’s Solo: A Star Wars Story,...

Every year, cinephiles wake up early to watch the announcement from France of the films playing at the Cannes Film Festival. For the 71st Cannes Film Festival taking place this May, they've thrown a bit of a curveball with an entirely unexpected selection of films playing this year. The selection includes new films from Jafar Panahi (Three Faces), Pawel Pawlikowski (Cold War), Alice Rohrwacher (Lazzaro Felice), Matteo Garrone (Dogman), Spike Lee (BlacKkKlansman), David Robert Mitchell (Under the Silver Lake), along with Jean-Luc Godard, Hirokazu Kore-eda, Jia Zhang-Ke, plus Wim Wenders' Pope documentary. And then there's the Star Wars movie, of course, which kind of makes this a very mixed bag. But there's no Suspiria, or Terry Gilliam, or Lars von Trier? And all the Netflix films are gone. It's a shame, this seems like a very light selection so far. Possibly with a few extra additions coming last minute.

Love it or hate it, the Cannes Film Festival exists in a class of its own, and the newly announced 2018 program is no exception. The 10-day event on the cusp of the French Riviera finds thousands of people from the international film community crowding into a small strip of land known as the Croisette, where revered auteurs compete for attention in the majestic Palais des Festivals, while photographers crowd the red carpet alongside an ocean of tuxedos and sparkling gowns. The lavish display often obscures the actual quality of the movies, but Cannes always has a wide range of options. Artistic director Thierry Fremaux and his covert team of programmers are notorious for screening films up until the very last moment, even late into the night before the announcement of the Official Selection.

The 2018 Cannes Film Festival will include new films from directors Spike Lee, Pawel Pawlikowski, David Robert Mitchell and Jean-Luc Godard, as part of a lineup light on American films and long on international auteurs both young and old.
Lee’s “BlacKKKlansman” and Mitchell’s “Under the Silver Lake” are the only American movies in the 18-film main competition, although Ron Howard’s “Solo: A Star Wars Story” will screen out of competition.
Celebrated international directors in the competition include Pawlikowski, Matteo Garrone, Jia Zhang-Ke and Godard, who is bringing the new “Le Livre d’Image” to the festival more than five decades after he made the 1965 film “Pierrot le Fou,” which graces this year’s Cannes poster.

New movies from Spike Lee (“BlacKkKlansman”), Jean-Luc Godard (“The Image Book”) and Oscar-winning “Ida” director Pawel Pawlikowski (“Cold War”) join previously announced “Solo: A Star Wars Story” at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival, making for a lineup that’s considerably less starry — at least by Hollywood standards — than in years past.
At the press conference in Paris, Cannes artistic director Thierry Frémaux suggested that several more titles may be announced in the days to come, reminding that 2017 Palme d’Or winner “The Square” was a late addition last year.
Scheduled to kick off a month after the inaugural television-focused Cannes Series event, the festival will unspool from May 8-19 — which is the earliest the festival has taken place in more than 20 years. The parallel Directors’ Fortnight and Critics’ Week programs will take place during the same dates, but technically fall outside the “official selection,” and as such, will announce their lineups later in April.

Noah Hawley is still in the process of developing his Doctor Doom film, and in a recent interview, he shed some additional light on what he is going for. If this movie actually ends up getting made, it sounds like it's going to end up being a political thriller and the filmmaker uses Captain America: The Winter Soldier as an example.
While talking to The Observer, Hawley, who is also the creator of the X-Men series Legion, explained:
"What’s interesting to me about Doom’s character is he’s the King of an Eastern European country and is there a version of this that is more of a political thriller that mixes genre?…It’s something that Captain America: The Winter Soldier did really well, which was kind of make a Cold War thriller movie out of a superhero movie. This is different than that, but it does have this idea of,...

After season 1 of Legion blew my mind, I’m ready to saddle up with whatever Noah Hawley decides to make next. So, it’s with a huge sense of anticipation that we’re learning more about his Doctor Doom movie. The project is still very much in the planning stages and hasn’t been greenlit yet, but Hawley is talking a big game of mixed genres and political tension.
In an interview with Observer, he set out his pitch by explaining:
“As with Legion, my thought was that the [superhero] genre has a certain kind of movie covered, but what else can the genre do. What’s interesting to me about Doom’s character is he’s the king of an Eastern European country and is there a version of this that is more of a political thriller that mixes genre?”

For the time being, the Doctor Doom movie is still happening, and now we have some idea of what it could look like. Noah Hawley, creator of Legion and Fargo, announced last year during San Diego Comic-Con that he was working on a movie based on the famed Fantastic Four villain. Details have been scarce since the initial announcement, and it seemed like maybe Fox would ice the project when the Disney/Fox deal came to light, but nope. Hawley is still working on Doctor Doom and he has an ambitious vision.
Noah Hawley recently spoke a bit about this Doctor Doom movie, which is being developed but is in no way a guarantee at this point. While he's being vague for now, Hawley reveals that he's going to draw some inspiration from Captain America: The Winter Soldier but that his Doctor Doom movie won't be a retread of that concept.

In vino veritas! It's no big secret or surprise that Queen Elizabeth II has not been a big fan of her son Prince Charles' second wife Camilla Parker-Bowles—but a new book by British journalist Tom Bower details just how rocky the relationship has been between the two women over the years, calling the royal's icy treatment of Parker-Bowles a "Cold War". The tell-all, titled Rebel Prince: The Power, Passion and Defiance of Prince Charles, details a boozy night at Balmoral Castle in the summer of 1998 (a year after Princess Diana's death) when the Queen's silver tongue got the best of her after a few drinks. According to People via an excerpt published in the Daily Mail,...

When you know a bit about Hon Jin, internationally known as Cold War, before watching it, you can’t help but expect quite a lot of this film. First of all, it features superstars Aaron Kwok and Tony Leung Ka-fai. Next to this, the film won 9 Hong Kong Film Awards in April 2013, including best film, best director, best actor (Tony Leung Ka-fai) and best screenplay. This might result in setting one’s expectations quite high.
A van with 5 top police officers and the most advanced equipment vanishes without a trace. It doesn’t take long before the hijackers contact the police and demand a large sum of money. Rival deputy commissioners Lau (Aaron Kwok) and Lee (Tony Leung Ka-fai) want to lead the case, which is codenamed Cold War. The problem is that...
