Though last year’s two biggest stars, Robert Downey, Jr. and Benedict Cumberbatch, are nowhere to be found on the official, confirmed list of stars attending this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, you can’t say that Toronto will be left wanting in terms of star power.
Johnny Depp, Joel Edgerton, and Kevin Bacon will be in town promoting their Boston-set crime flick, Black Mass, in co-star Cumberbatch’s absence. Also, though Iron Man won’t make it up north for the Festival, Marvel’s Kate Mara (Fantastic Four) and Sebastian Stan (Captain America) will be backing up Jessica Chastain, Matt Damon, and Chiwetel Ejiofor on the red carpet for this year’s undisputed big ticket, The Martian. Jake Gyllenhaal will also be on-hand in support of Tiff's opening film, Demolition.

Grammy winning composer Lorne Balfe creates an action-packed, emotive score for Paramount Pictures’ and Skydance Productions’ Terminator Genisys, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Jason Clarke, Emilia Clarke, and Jai Courtney. Oscar winning composer Hans Zimmer is the Executive Music Producer.
With the movie building from 1991’s Terminator 2: Judgement Day, including shot-for-shot recreations, Lorne Balfe’s score needed to honor the tradition of the past Terminator films while adding bold, new music to fit the action and emotions of Genisys.
Producer David Ellison says, “This is the largest scale Terminator movie that’s ever been made. There are bigger action sequences in Genisys than any prior Terminator film.”
In addition to propelling the action, Balfe’s score needed to tap into the film’s emotional core as it explores themes of freedom and guardianship. “The score contains everything but the kitchen sink. It’s a hybrid score, and although there are these massive action cues,...

Kingsman: The Secret Service
Written by Jane Goldman & Matthew Vaughn (adapted from the comic series by Mark Millar & Dave Gibbons)
Directed by Matthew Vaughn
UK, 2014
There’s a hilarious moment in the classic ‘80s comedy Planes, Trains & Automobiles when Steve Martin has finally had enough of John Candy’s inane anecdotes. “When you’re telling these little stories,” he instructs Candy, “here’s a good idea… have a point. It makes it so much more interesting for the listener!” If only the makers of the new spy actioner Kingsman: The Secret Service had taken that advice. Despite all of its self-satisfied smugness, Kingsman neglects to give us a coherent story, consistent tone, or anything worth caring about. It’s ironic that a film trying so hard to be inventive and outrageous ends up being such a derivative bore.
The plot for Kingsman is barely adequate to connect the gags and set pieces,...

Last year Brad listed his list of Top Ten Christmas Movies and in 2007 David listed the ten films he considered the Top Ten Deranged Christmas Flicks. Well, I had to throw my hat in the ring with a completely different list... a list for the holiday softies. So light the fire, warm the coco and grab a blanket... What follows is my list of the twelve best Christmas/Holiday movies to warm your heart. When you compare the twelve films that follow to the two lists I just mentioned, three of them can be found on Brad's top ten and two on David's list of Deranged Christmas Flicks, but perhaps the most interesting fact of them all is that all three lists share the exact same film in the #1 slot. Weird... right? So browse through these three pages where I say a few words about each film, offer up some clips and trailers and,...

Hollywood – The 25th American Cinematheque Award will be presented to two-time Academy Award® nominee Robert Downey, Jr. at the Cinematheque’s annual benefit gala, American Cinematheque Board chairman Rick Nicita announced today. The presentation takes place Friday, October 14, 2011 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel’s International Ballroom in Beverly Hills.
“The American Cinematheque is extremely pleased to honor Robert Downey, Jr. as the 25th recipient of the American Cinematheque award at our celebration this year,” said Rick Nicita. “The pleasure that we receive from his charismatic and nuanced performances is matched only by the respect that he has earned for his personal and professional journey. The wide range of his talent has kept us enthralled in movies from a biopic like “Chaplin” to outrageous comedies like “Tropic Thunder” to franchises like “Sherlock Holmes” and, of course, “Iron Man.” While we have been enjoying him for years, it seems that he’s...

Todd Phillips, director of The Hangover, reteams with Zach Galifianakis (It’s Kind of a Funny Story) joined by Robert Downey Jr. (Iron Man) in a retelling of the classic buddy road trip comedy. This genre was originally pioneered by Bob Hope and Bing Crosby with movies like On the Road to Morocco. A more contemporary and applicable comparison can be made to Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, which starred Steve Martin and the late John Candy.
Much like that film, the story involves very different men trying to get cross country. In this case Downey’s character Peter Highman is trying to get home where his pregnant wife will soon go into labor. While at the airport he meets Galifianakis’s Ethan Tremblay, an eccentric aspiring actor on his way to Hollywood. A series of shenanigans gets both men kicked off their plane and placed on a no fly list.

In a surge reminiscent of its late-breaking Oscar season momentum, The King’s Speech triumphed at the 2011 Academy Awards, winning three of the final four categories including Best Picture, Best Actor (Colin Firth), and Best Director (Tom Hooper). The magnificent British drama took home four golden statues on Sunday, tieing Christopher Nolan’s Inception for the most Oscars, and narrowly beating critic favorite and three-time winner The Social Network.
Hosted by a smug, sleepy James Franco and a cheery, happy-to-be-there Anne Hathaway, the 3+ hour ceremony felt like an eternity. The next-generation actors were supposed to liven what is traditionally a stuffy telecast, but their monologue and subsequent appearances lacked the classy zingers of Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin’s banter or the pep of Hugh Jackman’s show.
Further attempts to appeal to a populist crowd, such as autotuning some of 2010’s big blockbusters or quipping about Charlie Sheen, fell flat,...

For months we've been seeing these movies, hearing buzz about their awards-worthiness, watching as the participating players press palms and tell the world why their efforts deserve to be honored ahead of the rest. In its second week in theaters, James Cameron’s Avatar topped the largest weekend box office in history that totaled an estimated $264 million in sales. The figure may be even higher once the final numbers shake out on Monday.
Cameron’s 3D epic contributed $75 million, the second biggest second weekend in history just behind The Dark Knight’s July 2008 run. Typically movies will see around a 50% decline between weekends, but Avatar managed to drop only 2.6% from its opening on the way to $212 million domestic and already rank 7th in 2009 grosses.
On top of that, it added another $145 million overseas for an unbelievable worldwide total thus far of $617.3 million.
Warner Bros’ Sherlock Holmes put up equally impressive numbers, setting the Christmas Day record with $24.9M on the holiday opening before tallying $65.4 million through Sunday. Outside of Iron Man, it’s the biggest weekend for stars Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law, Rachel McAdams,...

Todd Phillips is still flying high following the runaway success of this summer's "The Hangover." A sequel has already been confirmed for that one, and many had believed that it would be next for the guy who also gave us such hilarious outings as "Road Trip" and "Old School." Then, a couple weeks ago, word hit the Internets that the director had settled on his next project, a road trip comedy called "Due Date."
"Hangover" star Zach Galifianakis was confirmed as one of "Due Date"'s two stars alongside the earlier announcement. Now we know who will join G on his shenanigans-filled road trip. Variety reports that "Iron Man" star Robert Downey Jr. is on board.
If you're surprised at the sudden addition of an a superstar like Downey, remember that Phillips scored a grand slam with "Hangover." The May release only recently breached $240 million in box office receipts, surpassing...
