Guest reviewer Matt Rovner delves into the cultural riches of ethnic films specially made for speakers of the Yiddish language. Some were filmed in Poland and others in New Jersey (according to Edgar Ulmer!)… and if they seem obscure they’re nevertheless culturally significant as a record of a language that’s fast disappearing. Among the gems is a significant folk-horror tale and an original non-musical drama about Tevye the Milkman’s problems with his daughter and the oppressive laws of the Czar.

Time is a real bitch. Between interviews and standard blogging and technical difficulties and Globes and Film Bitch Awards and a cold, your host has had a difficult couple of weeks that he definitely didn't plan well enough for. But this rought start to 2016 shall not deter him. Please stick with us and cheerlead in the comments and we'll make 2016 the best year yet at The Film Experience even though these past 10 days or so have not gone half as planned. (Note to self for 2016: You can't cover everything... the link list is your friend. Also please win the lottery so you can hire a full time staff of 5? 10?)
Here's some reading elsewhere while we continue to update Oscar charts, try to collect ourselves (still trying to decide how to approach the #OscarsSoWhite issue which is getting such shoddy or agenda-filled or misleading coverage elsewhere). And maybe eating lunch...

Hello, and welcome to The Best Of Number Two here at The Liberal Dead. We haven’t done any kind of theme for a long time, so I thought I would reach out to some some talented people from other sites, and see if we can put something together. I decided it would be a theme about the best second films in a franchise/series. Expect discussion about Metamorhosis: The Alien Factor, The Devil’s Rejects, C.H.U.D. II, Blade II, Sleepaway Camp II, Amityville 2, Island of the Fishmen, The Dark Knight, Final Destination 2, House II and more.

Steve Buscemi is a Golden Globe-winning thespian responsible for such indelible characters as Nucky Thompson on "Boardwalk Empire," Carl Showalter in "Fargo" and Mr. Pink in "Reservoir Dogs." He's a serious man who makes serious films. And so it's only natural that this week he's about to co-star in his latest gritty drama: "The Incredible Burt Wonderstone"?
Okay, so Buscemi isn't exactly a complete stranger to comedy, either. After all, he was one of the main characters in the legendary 1998 cult classic "The Big Lebowski." But it's still jarring to see someone like Buscemi get dolled up as a Vegas magician and go toe to toe with the likes of Jim Carrey and Steve Carell in an all-out farce.
And that got us thinking: What other "serious" actors have taken a stab at comedy? Sure, funny folks like Carrey and Bill Murray have long transitioned to serious roles, but it's...

Let’s face it: There are a whole lot of new stage productions opening in New York City this fall. Some shows boast legendary veterans like Al Pacino (left) and Sigourney Weaver. Others promise young stars like Jessica Chastain and Jake Gyllenhaal. For still others, the title alone (a 50th anniversary revival of Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?, anyone?) may be the biggest draw. Here are the 10 that have us most eager to line up for tickets.

Harry, Ron and Hermione will continue their search for the Horcruxes in the final film of the Harry Potter franchise, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II, directed by David Yates in theaters on July 15th of next year. The final film will lead us back to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry for the biggest battle between good and evil seen in the series.
One character to be encountered in the forthcoming film is reportedly, Helena Ravenclaw. She is the daughter of Rowena Ravenclaw (the founder of Ravenclaw house), and is now a ghost known as the Grey Lady. Ravenclaw plays an important part in the final act of the saga, and actress Kelly Macdonald (Boardwalk Empire) recently told Vanity Fair that she will be playing the part of Helena in the final film.

"Let me count the ways I love the Harry Potter movies," wrote Amy Taubin in the summer of 2009, as if asking permission to do so in Artforum's virtual pages. First, they "remind me of growing up enthralled with English childhoods," but "mostly I love Harry Potter for the actors." Singled out in particular are "Alan Rickman's Professor Severus Snape, looking more than ever like a formaldehyde version of John Cale in his Velvet Underground days. Rickman is a genius at allowing conflicting thoughts and impulses to flicker across his face while keeping most of what he's up to under wraps. He is also the winner of a tough competition with Maggie Smith (as Professor Minerva McGonagall) over who can deliver the most plumy version of dry wit; he bridges the second and third words of a three-word sentence with a full five-second pause."...

I’m standing in the Great Hall at Hogwarts. I see Snape positioned where Dumbledore used to stand at the top of the steps. As the new Headmaster, Snape is addressing a room full of students. He’s telling them that anyone who knows the whereabouts of Harry Potter – whether it be student or faculty – needs to come forward with any information or the punishment will be severe. Snape continues with the news that the school has the best magic protection and Harry Potter will not be able to enter the grounds. The former potions teacher walks among the students, looking at them, his gaze intense and his dialogue slow and methodical. He’s clearly hoping someone will tell him something. As he finishes saying his last line he looks up because he hears the voice of Harry Potter saying, “I don’t think the protection was good enough.” All the students turn,...

I.m a pretty serious goy. When the Coen Brothers latest offering arrived at the office it was delivered by a Korean kid and was accompanied by a white envelope stuffed with one hundred dollar bills. So I knew I was going to like it. In the old country (and entirely in Yiddish), Velvel (Allen Lewis Rickman) has had some trouble on the road during a snowstorm. He arrives home late to his wife (Yelena Shmulenson) to tell of his troubles, but says that he got help from a friend of hers, Reb Groshkover (Fyvush Finkel). She says that can.t be because Reb died three years ago and that what Velvel encountered on the road was a dybbuk.

Twilight had just hit theaters when rumors began to swirl around who would be cast in New Moon. It has resulted in heated arguments and a lot of undue hype. It started with recasting then-director Catherine Hardwicke with Chris Weitz. Next, it was Taylor Lautner versus Michael Copon. Then it was Vanessa Hudgens and Lucas Grabeel from High School Musical. And that's just the beginning. Dakota Fanning, Jodelle Ferland, Ian McKellen, Alan Rickman, AnnaLynne McCord; the list goes on and on. And throughout all of this, no one has bothered to show any journalistic integrity to find out if these rumors are actually true! We've been following up on these rumors directly with the people who ought to know the answers. So, shall we take a look at what is fact and what is fiction? Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart, Nikki Reed, Ashley Greene, Jackson Rathbone, Kellan Lutz, and Taylor Lautner...
