"The Last of Us" is a gripping drama. It's also a video game adaptation that does something unique with its zombie apocalypse, trading in the walking dead for very much alive people infected by a fungus that takes over their brains and bodies. The infected are a source of infinite horror on the series, with new types providing more and more nightmare fuel. But even when there are no infected to be found, "The Last of Us" is a horror story in which danger lurks around every corner (with plenty of emotional devastation soon to follow after). It's a bleak and, at times, frankly nihilistic show about how terrifying fungi can be, with characters that are mostly miserable and only able to find small glimmers of hope at the end of the world.

Seth Rogen's new comedy series might feel fresh, but it's not exactly original. The Studio, which is streaming on Apple TV+, follows a fictional studio executive as he meets with real-life actors in a show with the main purpose of satirizing Hollywood. The Studio is not the first show or movie to do this, as The Player had a near-identical premise but with a plot that makes it much more like a thriller than a comedy. The Studio even makes at least one reference to the film.
The Player was based on a hit book and received critical acclaim when it came out, with 97% on Rotten Tomatoes. The film might have gone under a few people's radars as it was distributed by a small studio that was absorbed by Warner Bros. However, it's now streaming on Max, and it's worth checking out.

Welcome to Reality Derby, our weekly deep dive into all things reality TV, hosted by Gold Derby senior editors Marcus James Dixon and Denton Davidson.
Joining us this week is hip-hop legend Flavor Flav, the Public Enemy hype man who was unmasked as Space Ranger on The Masked Singer Season 13. The music star and reality TV trailblazer tells us he enjoyed his time on the show, but admits he's a bit salty over those "simple clues." Watch the video interview above.
"I've got one of the most distinctive voices on the planet," Flav says. "It's not hard to take my voice and link it to those easy-ass clues that they had up there. The clues were so simple! They did me a little dirty. They could have given me harder clues ... a caveman could have figured it out."

Kendrick Lamar just televised a revolution with his Super Bowl Halftime show on Sunday. Filled with references not just to his beef with Drake but also to the Black experience in America, the show sparked a lot of conversation, with many even criticizing it for not being entertaining enough.
While it is definitely not the best show in the NFL game, Lamar’s performance is nothing short of historic due to the topical themes he explored. From the background dancers forming a divided flag to casting actor Samuel L. Jackson as Uncle Sam, Lamar’s show and the symbolism will be talked about for years to come.

More than 50 years after he died at age 39 from an assassin’s bullet, the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. endures as one of the most influential and recognizable figures in American history. His rise from the pulpit of the Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta to his groundbreaking work as a founder and leader of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference made him the driving force of the Civil Rights movement of the mid-20th century.
King was not yet 30 when he first made his mark on the national stage. His forceful use of non-violent protest, boycotts and civil disobedience to address the deplorable racism, legal and economic discriminations that Black Americans faced made him a compelling personality at a time when local and national TV news was strengthening as a cultural force. During the 1950s, Harry Belafonte was one of the few Black actors in Hollywood (along with Sidney Poitier) given the opportunity to be a leading man. Like Poitier, the roles were limited, and often based on his racial identity. Yet he made the most of the parts he was given, as evidenced by his performance in the 1959 doomsday drama The World, the Flesh and the Devil. Released at a time when America was becoming both increasingly concerned about the threat of nuclear war and aware of the Civil Rights Movement, it envisions a world in which the races must learn to work together after a bomb has wiped out humanity.

RaMell Ross has something to say. With his latest film, “Nickel Boys,” the co-writer and director solidifies his reputation as one of contemporary cinema’s most daring storytellers. Adapted from Colson Whitehead’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, the film unearths the haunting realities of a fictionalized reform school, blending visceral storytelling with an experimental approach that has captured the attention of cinephiles.
Known for his Academy Award-nominated documentary “Hale County This Morning, This Evening,” Ross’ unique lens, challenges the conventions of how stories about Black lives are told — and received. In a candid conversation on the Variety Awards Circuit Podcast, Ross reflects on the symbolism in “Nickel Boys,” the film industry’s treatment of Black stories, his dream collaborators, and the surprising possibility of working on a Marvel movie.

It’s thanks to Tim Burton’s supernatural comedy that a few calypso songs by famous actor/singer/activist Harry Belafonte have become popular on Halloween playlists. “Day-o” and “Jump in the Line” will get everyone dancing like they are haunted by the Maitlands. Then, thirty-plus years after Beetlejuice, a legacy sequel was made. Could it equally match the first movie’s bizarre musical numbers? It’s now streaming, where you see Beetlejuice Beetlejuice does just that with a gross and funny musical spectacle that could rival the dinner party with creepy shrimp dishes and a possessed Catherine O’Hara.

When Beetlejuice Beetlejuice hit theaters in late summer, nobody knew if it would connect with audiences like the 1988 original, now a beloved classic. Director Tim Burton and star Michael Keaton didn't want to make some cheap nostalgia-bait sequel, and waited until they had a new story they felt was worth telling. Luckily for everyone involved, it worked. The film was one of the biggest hits of 2024, grossing over $450 million worldwide and reinvigorating audiences' love for the characters. But as much as the creative team didn't want to repeat themselves, some elements from the first film were probably destined to carry over. One such element comes from one of the first movie's most memorable moments: the supernatural lip-sync number.

Unfolding as a humorous and heartbreaking road movie, the highly relatable “The Last Journey” is a tender portrait of the love that filmmaker Filip Hammar bears for his ailing 80-year-old father Lars. Hoping to rekindle the older man’s zest for life, Filip and his best friend and co-director Fredrik Wikingsson drive him to the French coastal town where they used to spend their holidays, but in the end, it’s the in-denial Filip who must come to grips with the indignities that aging brings and what time makes inevitable. On another level, the film serves as a tribute to teachers and an affirmation of how inspirational and memorable the good ones can be.

Just in time for spooky season, Tim Burton's long-rumored sequel Beetlejuice Beetlejuice has been taking the cinema world by storm. It has recently passed the $400 million threshold at the box office and sits at a solid 77% on Rotten Tomatoes along with a 7.0 score on IMDb. The return of Michael Keaton's eccentric ghost, Beetlejuice, has certainly gained positive ratings from fans and critics.
In comparison to its classic predecessor, Beetlejuice, it's considered a worthy sequel on par with the original. The 1988 original was a hit among dark comedy and horror fans, getting an 83% on Rotten Tomatoes and a 7.5 score on IMDb. Given its unique appeal and lower budget, it only garnered a box office return of $74.8 million. However, it was still a big hit at the time. Both have been stamped as classic Tim Burton successes and there's an adoration for the original that will stand the test of time.

Some classic horror characters, including Michael Myers and more bust out a move in honor of spooky season. Throughout the years, several horror villains have become iconic parts of Halloween culture. These include several masked killers, including the Halloween franchise's Michael Myers, and Scream's Ghostface. In recent years, there have also been modern reboots of many of the classic horror franchises from the late 20th century, making for an even bigger resurgence of some of these villains. For example, Scream 7 is currently in development, and will see the return of Neve Campbell.
Now, @michaelslayersofficial has posted a new video that shows three iconic horror villains dancing.

Star Trek has had numerous alien races onboard its series and in its movies, and some of the actors portraying these characters require more time in the make-up chair than others. Jonathan Frakes, who played Commander Riker on Star Trek: The Next Generation acknowledged at a ComicBook fundraiser that he was fortunate to play a human on the show as it saved him a lot of time. When the day of filming was over, Frakes and Patrick Stewart [Captain Picard] could head out for a drink while both Michael Dorn [Worf] and Brent Spiner [Data] were stuck in the makeup chairs getting prosthetics removed and gold paint washed off. Then there were the women who had to get their wigs off. Frakes pointed out that people playing aliens had to arrive on set at least four hours earlier and stay at least an hour and a half later after everyone else was done with their time on set.

“As a kid, I was given this very odd, awkward name — because I never met another Usher — so it was a bit complicated, but the most unfortunate reality is that I was gifted this name by a man who never showed up, who was never there to help me give meaning, give understanding, give some reference to what this name means, where it came from, and what it could potentially be,” said Usher who received the Quincy Jones Humanitarian Award as he teased a few dance moves along to Bobby Brown’s “Don’t Be Cruel,” as it played in the background.

Tim Burton's new film "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice" has made over $153 million to date, which is surprising for a 34-years-after-the-fact sequel to an eerie, unusual comedy about unhappy rural ghosts (Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis) and the randy demon (Michael Keaton) they hire as a professional haunter. Keaton, Winona Ryder, and Catherine O'Hara return from the original film, now 34 years older and at new places in their lives. It seems that Betelgeuse still has randy, wedding-forward machinations at hand.
It's unusual that "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice" finally got made, seeing as how several "Beetlejuice" projects had deflated in the past. Back in 1988, when "Beetlejuice" became a hit, two "Beetlejuice" sequels were immediately commissioned, and Hollywood was abuzz with where a follow-up might go. One of the original ideas was to be called "Beetlejuice in Love," written by Warren Skaaren, one of the first film's most active script doctors. That never-made film was to...

The Killers kicked off a two-night stand at Forest Hills Stadium in Queens, New York, on Saturday night by honoring another band that played the same venue 60 years earlier.
“Some of you might know the history of the place,” Killers frontman Brandon Flowers told the crowd. “Obviously there were some amazing tennis matches that took place here. When we think about that historic Beatles performance at Shea Stadium, that was in 1965. But in 1964, 60 years ago, the Beatles did two nights here at Forest Hills. [This story includes spoilers for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.]
Clocking in at just under two minutes, the involuntary calypso dance sequence in the original Beetlejuice, during which Catherine O’Hara’s Delia Deetz leads her dinner guests in a lip sync of Harry Belafonte’s “Day-o,” is arguably the most famous scene from the 1988 film. An homage in the sequel was always a given.
But, for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, director Tim Burton wanted to go even harder. The film’s climax includes another dance number — this one set to all seven minutes and 21 seconds of Richard Harris’ bonkers and much covered “MacArthur Park.” (Donna Summer’s disco-fied version spent three weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the fall of 1978.) It isn’t just another needle drop. It practically drives the narrative of the entire third act.

Warning: Spoilers ahead for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice!Beetlejuice Beetlejuice writer Alfred Gough has explained why the sequel's possession dance scene doesn't use "Banana Boat (Day-o)" like the original film does. One of the most memorable scenes from the first movie involves the Maitlands possessing the Deetz family and their guests, making them dance to "Banana Boat (Day-o)" by Harry Belafonte. The end of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice contains a similar scene when Betelgeuse (Michael Keaton) tries to marry Lydia (Winonna Ryder) again, this time possessing her family and other characters to lip sync to "MacArthur Park" by Richard Harris.
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Gough explained how the decision to use "MacArthur Park" instead of "Banana Boat (Day-o)" in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice's possession scene came from director Tim Burton. The writer explained how the director's suggestion helped them write out an ever-evolving possession sequence. He also explains how Betelgeuse was never the one to...

Michael Keaton's Beetlejuice comes to life in an impressive new cosplay following the release of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. Released in 1988, Tim Burton's cult classic film stars Keaton as Betelgeuse, a bio-exorcist who helps a deceased couple rid their home of its insufferable new owners, the Deetz family. Keaton now becomes his chaotic character once more in Burton's Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, returning to wreak havoc in the real world after the young Astrid Deetz (Jenna Ortega), Lydia's (Winona Ryder) daughter, summons him.
Cosplayer Annie Thomas now shares a new video showing her own transformation into Keaton's iconic character. The video shows the painstaking makeup and prosthetics application process, capturing the white skin, green hair, and otherwise rotten look that Keaton's character spots in both movies. Thomas doesn't stop there, however, and also includes several notable Beetlejuice outfits, including the red tuxedo, the black-and-white striped suit, and a conductor's uniform. Check out...

Some have achieved non-competitive Egot status through honorary awards such as Barbara Streisand with her special Tony, Liza Minnelli with her Grammy Legend Award, James Earl Jones with his Academy Honorary Award, Harry Belafonte with his Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award and Quincy Jones and Frank Marshall.

Ever since the first "Beetlejuice" escalated the obsession the ghostly Maitland couple had with Harry Belafonte to them trying to rid their home of the obnoxious Deetz family by making them do a possession lip sync dance number to "Banana Boat (Day-o)," it seemed like a given that a follow-up setpiece had to happen if "Beetlejuice" ever got a sequel. Of course, follow-ups to gags can be tricky, especially in comedy sequels. Some try to go bigger and wilder, such as the climactic news team battle in "Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues." Others try and undercut or subvert the expectation, like when Phoebe Cates' Kate starts delivering a monologue about some trauma that happened to her on Lincoln's birthday and is cut off in "Gremlins 2: The New Batch." Others still merely pick up where the bit left off in the first film,...

However, things go sideways when the ghost with the most starts making contact with Lydia. Beetlejuice 2s reviews have been overwhelmingly positive due to the movies emotional depth, compelling performances, and striking visuals.
However, one incredible part of the movie that hasnt gained enough attention and praise is the music. With Beetlejuice 2 finally here, moviegoers will be eager to know whether or not there are any extra surprises in terms of a credit scene at the end of the sequel. It took 36 years for Beetlejuice 2 to happen despite the lasting popularity of Tim Burton's original movie from 1988. As predicted, there's still immense interest in continuing the franchise, especially when adding elements for the new generation through Jenna Ortega's addition as part of Beetlejuice 2's cast. While the franchise's future is unclear, the sequel's final moments help provide some insight.

Following his return as Batman in Andy Muschietti’s The Flash (2023), Michael Keaton again revisits another iconic character in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice – a prospect apparently strong enough to lure director Tim Burton out of retirement to helm the project. Unfortunately, the result is slightly better than a rehash of the first film, but has nowhere near the original’s charm or appeal.
The film begins by re-introducing the audience to Lydia Deetz (Winona Ryder) who has been using her ability to commune with the dead as a means to earn an income. However, when a family tragedy occurs, the family must reconvene at the long abandoned home in Winter River to sort through the remnants of their lives. There, Lydia’s estranged daughter, Astrid (Jenna Ortega), learns the truth of her mother’s story and the demon named Beetlejuice.

It’s showtime! Yes, everyone’s favourite eccentric bio-exorcist, Betelgeuse, is coming back to the big screen, with Tim Burton’s much-anticipated sequel Beetlejuice Beetlejuice heading to cinemas very soon. That makes now the perfect time to revisit the gothic, gruesome tale that started it all – Burton’s original Beetlejuice, released back in 1988, which first established Michael Keaton as the striped-suited ghost with the most.

Beetlejuice is back! Oscar-nominated, singular creative visionary Tim Burton and Oscar nominee and star Michael Keaton reunite for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, the long-awaited sequel to Burton’s award winning Beetlejuice.
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice was the opening film at this year’s Venice Film Festival and the sequel had a four minute standing ovation.

“I think my character has matured,” Keaton said. “As suave and sensitive as he was in the first, I think he’s even more so in this one.”
The early reviews are raving about the movie.

Yep, it’s Michael Keaton’s compellingly horrible undead Beetlejuice, still large as life and twice as unnatural, still with the sweaty black circles around his eyes, still barking and twitching like an automaton gone rogue. Beetlejuice, being disgusting on many levels, decided they had a psychic bond and were destined to be together. There’s only 6,000 years between them, after all.

Jenna Ortega has starred in several critically acclaimed projects, and she is just getting started. Her biggest role to date is the titular character in the Netflix hit show Wednesday and, when it premiered in 2022, one of the catchiest moments was the iconic dance to The Cramps' "Goo Goo Much," a dance that went viral and was replicated by many fans.
Nearly two years later, Ortega teased a new dance this time for a different project: Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. Speaking to Collider to promote the upcoming sequel, Ortega revealed the film will also include a cast with the rest of the dance, and that it will be "better" than the Wednesday one because the pressure isn't just on her. The scene will reference one iconic moment from the original 1988 Beetlejuice during the Deetzs dinner party.

In the Netflix documentary The Greatest Night in Pop, tensions are high as more than 40 of the top musicians of the ’80s, including Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Wonder, Bob Dylan, Diana Ross and Cyndi Lauper, only have a few late night hours to record the anthem “We Are the World.”
The tension is so palpable that it was still present decades later at the January premiere of the documentary, recalls Lionel Richie, who co-wrote the song with Michael Jackson and was a producer on the doc.
“When we did the premiere, Huey Lewis was sitting with me, and he leaned over to me and said, ‘I don’t think we’re going to make it.’ And I said, ‘Huey, it was 40 years ago. We made it,’ ” Richie says, laughing.

Bob Newhart was the recording industry’s first comedy superstar. Newhart, who passed away today at the age of 94, took home the Grammy for Record of the Year in 1961, beating out lightweights like Frank Sinatra and Harry Belafonte. He also took home 1961’s Comedy Album of the Year for his second album, recorded hastily after his first, The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart, occupied the #1 spot on the Billboard charts for 17 of 18 weeks that summer and fall.
My parents owned both of those albums, and I wore them out as I studied their uproarious rhythms. Because Newhart’s comic persona was so mild-mannered and unassuming, it’s easy to forget what an out-of-the-box maverick he was in his heyday. Newhart didn’t spew stale one-liners like Catskills comics of a previous generation—instead, he created elaborate, one-sided conversations (often with a pantomimed phone in hand) with dead Presidents, craven advertising executives,...
