It's a bleak and, at times, frankly nihilistic show about how terrifying fungi can be, with characters that are mostly miserable and only able to find small glimmers of hope at the end of the world.

“Number One on the Call Sheet: Black Leading Men in Hollywood” was directed by Reginald Hudlin, while Shola Lynch directed the second film “Number One on the Call Sheet: Black Leading Women in Hollywood.” The roster of stars is a who’s who of Hollywood, all of whom made themselves available for the documentary.

Seth Rogen's new comedy series might feel fresh, but it's not exactly original. The Studio, which is streaming on Apple TV+, follows a fictional studio executive as he meets with real-life actors in a show with the main purpose of satirizing Hollywood. The Studio is not the first show or movie to do this, as The Player had a near-identical premise but with a plot that makes it much more like a thriller than a comedy. The Studio even makes at least one reference to the film.

The Player was based on a hit book and received critical acclaim when it came out, with 97% on Rotten Tomatoes. The film might have gone under a few people's radars as it was distributed by a small studio that was absorbed by Warner Bros. However, it's now streaming on Max, and it's worth checking out.

Olga James, the singer and actor who costarred with Harry Belafonte in Otto Preminger’s classic 1954 musical film Carmen Jones, died January 25 at an assisted living facility in Los Angeles. She was 95.

Her death was announced by family.

James also starred opposite Sammy Davis Jr. in Broadway’s 1956 musical Mr. Wonderful. On TV, she played Verna Kincaid in Bill Cosby’s 1969-71 sitcom The Bill Cosby Show. Her character was the sister-in-law of star Cosby’s main character.

Born February 16, 1929, in Washington D.C. into a musical family — her father played the saxophone, her mother was a dancer — James would attend Julliard in New York City where she studied opera. She made her professional debut in 1952 in Paris, performing in the opera Four Saints in Three Acts.

Olga James, the singer, actress and nightclub performer who portrayed the jilted sweetheart of Harry Belafonte’s character in the landmark Otto Preminger-directed film musical Carmen Jones, has died. She was 95.

James died Jan. 25 at an assisted living facility in Los Angeles of complications from a fall in which she broke her pelvis, her niece, actress and acting teacher Janet Adderley, told The Hollywood Reporter.

James also portrayed the fiancée of Sammy Davis Jr.’s struggling showbiz entertainer in the 1956-57 Broadway musical Mr. Wonderful, and she recurred as Verna Kincaid, the sister-in-law of Bill Cosby’s high school gym teacher, on the comedian’s eponymous 1969-71 NBC sitcom.

During the 1950s, Harry Belafonte was one of the few Black actors in Hollywood (along with Sidney Poitier) given the opportunity to be a leading man. Like Poitier, the roles were limited, and often based on his racial identity. Yet he made the most of the parts he was given, as evidenced by his performance in the 1959 doomsday drama The World, the Flesh and the Devil. Released at a time when America was becoming both increasingly concerned about the threat of nuclear war and aware of the Civil Rights Movement, it envisions a world in which the races must learn to work together after a bomb has wiped out humanity.

It’s thanks to Tim Burton’s supernatural comedy that a few calypso songs by famous actor/singer/activist Harry Belafonte have become popular on Halloween playlists. “Day-o” and “Jump in the Line” will get everyone dancing like they are haunted by the Maitlands. Then, thirty-plus years after Beetlejuice, a legacy sequel was made. Could it equally match the first movie’s bizarre musical numbers? It’s now streaming, where you see Beetlejuice Beetlejuice does just that with a gross and funny musical spectacle that could rival the dinner party with creepy shrimp dishes and a possessed Catherine O’Hara.

When Beetlejuice Beetlejuice hit theaters in late summer, nobody knew if it would connect with audiences like the 1988 original, now a beloved classic. Larry Auerbach, a top agent at William Morris Agency for nearly 50 years who also served 25 years at USC School of Cinematic Arts, died Nov. 23 at his home in Beverly Hills. He was 95.

Auerbach represented a wide range of talent during his 47 years with William Morris, including Alan Alda, Bea Arthur, Marlo Thomas, Robert Wagner, Aaron Spelling, Sammy Davis Jr., Aretha Franklin, Sam Cooke, Harry Belafonte and such prestige-movie directors as Norman Jewison and Bernardo Bertolucci. Auerbach worked his way up to a leadership role at the agency after starting there in New York at age 15, working part-time while in high school sweeping floors and doing other less-than-glamorous duties during World War II.

Released back in 1985, "We Are The World" brought together the biggest names in the music industry from all types of genres, including pop, country, folk, rock, and more. The song was assembled by producers Quincy Jones and Michael Omartian and was originated by musician and activist Harry Belafonte and manager Ken Kragen.

The Greatest Night in Pop features new present-day interviews from Lionel Richie, who was a songwriter on "We Are The World" along with pop star Michael Jackson. Richie and Jackson had become acquaintances while their immensely successful music careers were just taking off as the lead singers of The Commodores and The Jackson Five, respectively. "We Are The World" remains to be one of the best-selling songs of all time, selling over 20 million physical copies during the mid-1980s.

Unfolding as a humorous and heartbreaking road movie, the highly relatable “The Last Journey” is a tender portrait of the love that filmmaker Filip Hammar bears for his ailing 80-year-old father Lars. Hoping to rekindle the older man’s zest for life, Filip and his best friend and co-director Fredrik Wikingsson drive him to the French coastal town where they used to spend their holidays, but in the end, it’s the in-denial Filip who must come to grips with the indignities that aging brings and what time makes inevitable. On another level, the film serves as a tribute to teachers and an affirmation of how inspirational and memorable the good ones can be.

With more than 400,000 admissions to date in Sweden, this life-affirming documentary shattered box office records and is still in theaters after 32 weeks. As Sweden’s international feature submission, it has the bones to be a dark horse candidate.

It has recently passed the $400 million threshold at the box office and sits at a solid 77% on Rotten Tomatoes along with a 7.0 score on IMDb. The return of Michael Keaton's eccentric ghost, Beetlejuice, has certainly gained positive ratings from fans and critics.

In comparison to its classic predecessor, Beetlejuice, it's considered a worthy sequel on par with the original. The 1988 original was a hit among dark comedy and horror fans, getting an 83% on Rotten Tomatoes and a 7.5 score on IMDb. Given its unique appeal and lower budget, it only garnered a box office return of $74.8 million. However, it was still a big hit at the time. Both have been stamped as classic Tim Burton successes and there's an adoration for the original that will stand the test of time.

Star Trek has had numerous alien races onboard its series and in its movies, and some of the actors portraying these characters require more time in the make-up chair than others. Jonathan Frakes, who played Commander Riker on Star Trek: The Next Generation acknowledged at a ComicBook fundraiser that he was fortunate to play a human on the show as it saved him a lot of time. The Killers kicked off a two-night stand at Forest Hills Stadium in Queens, New York, on Saturday night by honoring another band that played the same venue 60 years earlier.
