Worked every summer, for 42 years, as a lifeguard on the beaches of Avalon, California, and was well-known for strolling barefoot along the town's Front Street, wearing little more than a skin-tight swimsuit and a Captain's cap cocked jauntily on his head.

In 1949, he shaved his head and eventually wore a gold hoop earring in his left ear, both quite unusual for the day. He was rumored to have been the inspiration for the popular Mr. Clean character.
