20 years ago, Clint Eastwood's memorable Million Dollar Baby was crowned Best Picture at the Oscars, with the film breaking the hearts of many while also introducing them to Hilary Swank's timeless portrayal of a woman boxer. Now comes an exciting new film that switches the script of Eastwood's movie and transforms a powerful true story into great cinema. The Fire Inside tells the story of gold-medalist boxer Claressa Shields and features beloved talent both behind and in front of the camera. Its screenwriter is Oscar-winner Barry Jenkins (Moonlight), and its lead is rising star (opposite Brian Tyree Henry) Ryan Destiny (Grown-ish), who portrays a young Michigan-native Shields with an authentic intensity that makes The Fire Inside a knockout in more ways than one.

Rachel Morrison has been a cinematographer for years and even earned a nomination for her stunning work on Mudbound. With The Fire Inside, Morrison is in the director’s chair for the first time, and it’s safe to say that she has a solid future ahead of her in the role. Written by Barry Jenkins, The Fire Inside is based on the true story of Claressa “T-Rex” Shields, a professional boxer and two-time Olympic gold medalist. The sports biopic also underscores how being from Flint, an oft-forgotten place, is a strength, and its existence can’t be erased.

The holidays are nearing their end, and for anyone eager to go back to the theater, there are an unusual number of good options to choose from. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is a jolly surprise and the best in its franchise, Nosferatu continues Robert Eggers’ horror hot-streak, and the Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown is incredibly solid. Of course, there’s also the option to rewatch a little film called Wicked yet again.
However, one of the most unexpected surprises was The Fire Inside, the directorial debut of Black Panther cinematographer Rachel Morrison. The film tells the true story of Claressa Shields (Ryan Destiny), a high-schooler and aspiring boxer looking to compete in the Olympics. With help from her trainer, Jason Crutchfield (Brian Tyree Henry), she...

There's nothing quite like a good boxing drama, especially one based on a true story. While Sylvester Stallone's Rocky is a timeless dose of adrenaline, and Raging Bull is one of Scorsese's best, Amazon's latest offering could be a future classic. The Fire Inside, starring Ryan Destiny, Brian Tyree Henry, Judy Greer, and Jessica Grossi, tells the story of Claressa 'T-Rex' Shields, arguably the most famous and accomplished female boxer of all-time.
Ahead of The Fire Inside's official release on December 25, reviews are making their way online. The first 46 reviews from critics mark The Fire Inside as a strong heavyweight contender for one of the best boxing movies of all-time. The film currently sits at a staggering 96% on Rotten Tomatoes. While the film made its debut at the Toronto International Film Festival earlier this year, newer reviews have dropped online, and they're equally glowing. "A moving and...

Sports films and biopics (boxing ones in particular) tend to follow a specific formula overcoming the odds. After all, there's little drama or inspiration in watching a guaranteed winner crush all the competition as predicted. Unless those films get a sequel, though, we rarely get to see what happens when the applause goes away and the prize is won. In her directorial debut, The Fire Inside, Rachel Morrison tells the real-life story of Claressa Shields, the only boxer to win back-to-back gold medals and one of four boxers in history to hold all four major titles.
Shields' story is even more inspiring because of the tough home life in Flint, Michigan she had to overcome to achieve glory. However, what does glory really look like, and what happens after achieving it? That's the haunting reality this film explores which makes it a little different from other sports biopics (though it's...

MGM brings the story of boxing champion Claressa Shields to the big screen in “The Fire Inside,” a biopic due out on Christmas Day. The film stars “Grown-ish” star Ryan Destiny as Shields and is directed by Oscar-nominated cinematographer Rachel Morrison in her feature directorial debut.
Destiny demands the viewer’s attention in the movie’s first trailer. The film tells the story of Shields’ journey from her hometown of Flint, Michigan, to the Olympics — and what happened after her success, when she was forced to grapple with the pressure of providing for her family.
Shields, who at 17 as the youngest boxer at the U.S. Olympic Trials in 2012, won gold medals at both the 2012 Olympics in London and the 2016 Olympics in Rio. She was also the first American woman to win a gold medal in boxing at the Games.
She went pro after the 2016 Games and joined the Professional Fighters League...
