In the late 1980s, Bilbao’s working-class suburbs were a microcosm of newly democratic Spain’s broader socio-economic transformation. Amidst this, Borja Cobeaga’s upcoming comedy, “Breaking Walls” (“Los Aitas”), heads comedically into the evolution of fatherhood during this pivotal era. “Breaking Walls” is produced by Sayaka Producciones (“Colossal”), in collaboration with Inicia Films (“Glimmers”), Bteam Prods (“Schoolgirls”), and Despadres Aie. It follows a group of young gymnasts, all girls, whose fathers are “forced” to chaperone them on a trip to Berlin – a journey that coincides with the historic fall of the Berlin Wall. This road trip becomes a catalyst for these men to discover and redefine their roles as parents.
Cobeaga, collaborating with co-writer Valentina Viso (“Salve Maria”), grounds the film in the political, cultural and economic climate of the time. The opening features industrial stills of Bilbao, interspersed with references to the Pact of Ajuria Enea and the leadership of José Antonio Ardanza.

A film about fantasies slipping away, Robin Campillo’s semi-autobiographical Red Island begins with a daydream, of a world of miniature buildings and puppet-faced men facing off against a masked girl. The girl is quickly revealed to be a visualization of Fantômette, the heroine of the popular Georges Chaulet book series that bears her name, and a particular obsession of Campillo’s 10-year-old stand-in, Thomas (Charlie Vauselle).
The film unfolds largely around a military base in Madagascar, from 1970 to 1972. It’s a decade after the island country’s independence from France, but various ties to the former colonial power remain in place, with French soldiers staying on their bases and working with the local troops. Perhaps inevitably, the oddly paradoxical Red Island is at once lackadaisical and urgent, relaxed but with a clear eye for how swiftly everything will end for the characters at its center.

Taking inspiration from his comic book hero Fantomette, Thomas spies on those around him, discovering the hidden and tangled political and sexual lives of the colonizers and the colonized. Following the bracing sexual and political candor of “Bpm,” writer-director Robin Campillo’s much-laureled film about HIV/AIDS activism in 1990s Paris, “Red Island” initially appears to be a retreat into cozier nostalgia — a child’s-eye view of life on a French military base in 1970s Madagascar, flooded with sunlight, awash with the thrill of youthful exploration. That might seem an obtuse way to portray a time and place rife with fractious post-colonial tensions, only a couple of years before the African territory freed itself from the French Community to become a fully-fledged republic. But “Red Island” is a cannier work than that, slowly deromanticizing its purposely naive view of European family life, before sharply jackknifing into a different perspective, even a different film, altogether.
That switch is both arresting and jarring — a structural pivot that makes for a film easier to admire than it is to embrace. Yet its autobiographical elements are keenly felt,...

"You lie all the time to everyone. You scare me." Greenwich Entertainment has revealed a new official US trailer for a French thriller titled Madeleine Collins, starring the wonderfully talented actress Virginie Efira. This one originally premiered at film festivals back in 2021, opening in France later in 2021, though it has taken two more years to finally show up in the US for a proper release. Judith leads a double life: two lovers, two sons in France and one daughter in Switzerland. Entangled in secrets and lies, her lives begin to shatter. Reviews say the film features the "elegance and suspense of Hitchcock." Starring Virginie Efira as the woman with many lives, Jacqueline Bisset, Nadav Lapid, Nathalie Boutefeu, Quim Gutiérrez, and Bruno Salomone. Reviews also say this is a "stunning portrait of a monster," that is "not a mystery but a character study as a mystery." This one looks like it gets intense!

Vazaha (Les Blancs)
Forget about the numerous title changes, it appears that it took a little bit more time with detours due to the pandemic and dipping into different seasons and locations for Robin Campillo to put together his fourth feature. Named one of Unifrance’s 10 Talents to Watch for 2023, rising star Nadia Tereszkiewicz is set to breakout.
After stepping onto the international stage thanks to her work in Monia Chokri and Valeria Bruni-Tedeschi’s 2022 Sundance and Cannes titles “Babysitter” and “Forever Young,” the Franco-Finnish actor will next step into the spotlight, hitting the French award circuit for “Forever Young” while promoting Francois Ozon’s “The Crime Is Mine” – a starry showbiz caper that places Tereszkiewicz front and center.
And given the performer’s upcoming lead roles in Stephanie Di Giusto’s “La Rosalie” and Robin Campillo’s “Vazaha, The Strangers,” a number of repeat festival visits seem more than likely. Variety spoke with the actress as part the Unifrance Rendez-Vous in Paris.

A woman walks through the evening dress section of an elegant department store. The camera follows her as if it were one of the discreet sales people. The pace is calm. Audrey Hepburn's Holly Golightly in Breakfast At Tiffany's may come to mind with her explanation about Tiffany’s as a place where nothing really bad can happen. Which of course is wishful thinking. Films by auteurs Claire Denis, Hong Sangsoo and Rithy Panh are part of the lineup in competition at the 72nd Berlin Film Festival.
Berlin’s 2022 selection spans 18 movies, seven directed by women, which will compete for the Golden and Silver Bears. The films originate from 15 countries, with 17 serving as world premieres. Two of the films are first features, both from women.
Artistic director Carlo Chatrian discussed the thematic throughline of “human and emotional bonds” across the selection, with the family unit serving as a key focal point in a number of movies. More than half are set in the present time, and two are within the pandemic era.
The festival hosts 12 returning filmmakers, eight of whom are in competition and five of whom already hold a Bear from Berlin.
The festival will go ahead as an in-person event, albeit with seating capacity in movie theaters reduced to 50% and without any parties or receptions.

Benedetta star Virginie Efira plays a woman leading a double life in drama Madeleine Collins which premiered in the Venice Days section of the Venice Film Festival today. Also doubling up in Venice by serving on the competition jury, Efira puts in a terrific performance in Antoine Barraud’s taut relationship pic that veers into thriller territory.
Efira’s translator is a sophisticated, busy working woman whose job is the perfect cover for her many trips away from home. But where’s home? Is it in Switzerland in a flat with Abdel (Quim Gutiérrez) and her young daughter? Or is it in a glamorous place in France, with Melvil (Bruno Salomone) and their two adolescent sons? The fact that she’s known as ‘Judith’ in the latter and ‘Margot’ in the former increases the intrigue.
Much of Madeleine Collins’ early power is in its mysteries, and piecing the puzzle together keeps you engaged.

"It takes time to understand your parents..." Gravitas Ventures has released an official trailer for an indie coming-of-age story titled Chasing Wonders, filmed across five years by first-time filmmaker Paul Meins. Also known as Emu Plains, a reference to one of the wine growing locations in this, the film is being released in this US this June. A coming-of-age story set across the lush wine country of both Australia and Spain, a young man explores the nature of father-son relationships and the pathway toward understanding and forgiveness. This looks like a heartwarming story about the revelations of growing up. Chasing Wonders stars Michael Crisafulli as Sabino, with Edward James Olmos, Paz Vega, Jessica Marais, Carmen Maura, Antonio de la Torre, and Quim Gutiérrez. Not the best trailer, but this looks pretty good. A lot of lovely shots of landscapes and the stars and vineyards. I'm curious if there's some celestial aspect to this?...

The documentary about iconic Mexican singer Chavela Vargas has gone to Bodega Films in France and The Film Collaborative in the Us. A deal has been closed with Portugal (Leopardo Filmes), and Latido is reporting interest from Israel and Germany.
A bidding war is underway between two companies in Spain, which comes as no surprise considering the popularity of Chavela Vargas’ music in the country. Her songs are closely related to Pedro Almodóvar’s films and the director had personal involvement in the singer’s revival in the later years of her career.
Further titles on Latido’s line-up to have inked deals include Spanish war film Rescue Under Fire, which is set...

Landing Antonio de la Torre as the co-lead to the already announced Maribel Verdú, we are chalking up Pablo Berger‘s third feature film as a subtitle film item to look out for in 2017. Cineuropa reports that Torre, Quim Gutiérrez, José Mota and José María Pou have joined Abracadabra — with production being set up for early May in Madrid and Navarre.
Gist: This revolves around Carmen (Verdú), a housewife who lives in the Carabanchel neighbourhood of Madrid. One day, she discovers that her husband, Carlos (De la Torre), seems to be possessed by an evil spirit, and so begins a thorough investigation, straddling terror and ludicrousness, to try and get him back.
Worth Noting: Berger’s debut film Torremolinos 73 was distributed in the U.S via First Run Features.
Do We Care?: Blancanieves (read Nicholas Bell’s review) announced Berger as a filmmaker to look out for. Repairing...

The directing duo behind the underrated Carriers, Alex and David Pastor, return for yet another slice of post-apocalyptic horror with The Last Days, which sees a mysterious epidemic known as The Panic spread across the planet – essentially extreme agoraphobia, this new-found irrational fear of open spaces leads to instant death and soon the world’s population remains trapped inside buildings afraid to move. As Barcelona descends into chaos Marc embarks on a citywide quest to search for his pregnant girlfriend Julia without setting foot outside. Teaming up with his hated boss Enrique who was just about to fire him, this means travelling via sewer, subway line, cellars and basements, avoiding opportunistic feral gangs, armed only with a failing Gps device and lots of ingenuity.
