Image
Exclusive: Colin Bates (Queer) and Ella Kennedy Davis (Your Friends and Neighbors) will topline These Little Ones Perish, an indie drama from director Alex Noyer (Sound of Violence), which has wrapped production in New York.

For Noyer, the circumstances surrounding the shoot were extraordinary, as he went to set just one week after losing his home in the devastating Palisades fire that destroyed over 6,000 structures. The story begins after a young altar boy’s tragic death by suicide in a local church. Father Frye (Bates) discovers the body, only to face resistance from the church hierarchy, the local police and the surrounding community. The Blacklist: Everything We Know About Raymond Reddington's Real Identity
Image
With its excellent premise of a supervillain-level criminal joining forces with the FBI, "The Blacklist" ran rings around much of its crime drama competition when it comes to sheer creativity. The show always seemed to have a massive plot twist or a fun gimmick like the season 7 live action/animation hybrid episode up its sleeve. Even though your mileage may vary on whether "The Blacklist" could sustain its speed after Liz Keen's (Megan Boone) death in season 8 robbed it of the crucia tension between her and Raymond "Red" Reddington (James Spader), the show ultimately ran on Spader fuel, enabling it to keep at least some of its momentum for the remaining two seasons.

In fact, if fans have a bone to pick with "The Blacklist," it's that the show was too mysterious toward the end. After a decade of dropping hint after hint of Red's real name (and undoing...

On-Air Film Review: The Disembodied Daniel Craig in ‘Queer’
Image
Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com appears on “The Morning Mess” with Dan Baker for Wbgr-fm on December 12th, reviewing “Queer,” an adaptation of a William S. Burroughs novel via director Luca Guadagnino (“Challengers”). In wide release since December 13th.

Former James Bond Daniel Craig is William Lee, a trying-to-recover junkie who is hiding out in 1950s Mexico City after being run out of New Orleans. His lustful ways emerge while traipsing through the bar scene, and he becomes obsessed with an American Navy veteran named Allerton (Drew Starkey). Their relationship is damaged by Lee’s obsession, but things are about to change when they take a side trip to South America, to participate in a aya-hausca ritual, the psychoactive tea that provides mind altering hallucinatory trips. They’re not queer, they are disembodied.

”Queer” is in theaters since December 13h. Featuring Daniel Craig, Drew Starkey, Jason Schwartzman, Colin Bates and Andra Ursula.

Queer Review: Daniel Craig Does Career-Best Work In Luca Guadagninos Deeply Surreal LGBTQ Drama
Image
This review was originally published on September 3, 2024 as a part of our Venice Film Festival coverage.

I haven't read the William S. Burroughs novel that Queer is adapted from, but if you told me Luca Guadagnino had gutted it and started from scratch, I'd believe you. His latest movie seems to me to be in clear conversation with his previous work, as if the sensibilities of his four previous features were combined in one movie. It's an enigmatic experience that I desperately want to spend this space interpreting. But I will refrain from going into too much detail and just offer up the lens I saw it through.

An American expat in 1950s Mexico City, struggling with isolation and the remnants of his past, becomes infatuated with a younger man, sparking an intense and obsessive relationship.

Luca Guadagnino's Sweltering Drama 'Queer' Trailer #2 w/ Daniel Craig
Image
"This difficulty is convince someone else he is really a part of you..." Ain't that the truth. A24 has revealed a second official trailer for Queer, the second film from Italian director Luca Guadagnino out this year (he also opened Challengers in spring). Queer, adapted from the William S. Burroughs' novel, first premiered at the 2024 Venice Film Festival (here's my review) with stops at the Toronto, Zurich, London, and New York Film Festivals as well. Set in the 1950s - Daniel Craig stars as drifter Lee, who recounts his life in Mexico City among American expatriate college students and bar owners surviving on part-time jobs and G.I. Bill benefits. He is compelled to pursue a young man named Allerton, based on Adelbert Lewis Marker. Drew Starkey co-stars as his young infatuation, with a cast including Lesley Manville, Jason Schwartzman, Henrique Zaga, Omar Apollo, & Colin Bates. The film also features...

Where To Watch Queer: Showtimes & Streaming Status
Image
Daniel Craig stars in Luca Guadagnino's new romantic drama with awards aspirations, and there are options for where to watch Queer in theaters or on streaming. A few months after delivering one of 2024's best movies in Challengers, Guadagnino aspires to do it again with a 1950s drama starring Daniel Craig as William Lee, a man who falls for Eugene Allerton (Drew Starkey), who is a former member of the Navy. The movie chronicles their romantic relationship as Guadagnino returns to a similar subject matter as his Oscar-winning feature Call Me By Your Name.

Although Queer was developed and filmed independently, the movie's potential for awards consideration made it a coveted package after its festival debut at the Venice International Film Festival. This led to A24 acquiring the film and confirming a late 2024 release in theaters. This puts it in a good position to help Daniel Craig contend for an Oscars 2025 Best Actor nomination,...

Omar Apollo Prepared for ‘Queer’ Full Frontal Scene by Sending Nude to a Friend: “You Think I’m Good?”
Image
Omar Apollo is rolling through a lot of firsts in his life.

The singer, who rode the wave of a critically acclaimed debut album Ivory all the way to the Grammys with a best new artist nomination, offered an immediate yes when asked to make his acting debut in Luca Guadagnino’s Queer opposite Daniel Craig. The A24 film finds him playing a hustler who has a steamy one-night stand with Craig’s William Lee in Mexico City complete with a sex scene and full frontal nudity — more firsts for the 27-year-old Indiana native. His foray into Hollywood has since taken him to the Venice Film Festival and the recent Lacma Art + Film Gala, all new experiences for the rising star.

“It’s cool to be invited. It’s sweet,” Apollo told The Hollywood Reporter on Wednesday night at the L.A. premiere at DGA Theater Complex. “I don’t...

Venice Film Festival 2024: Best Movies, Performances & Awards
Image
At the Venice International Film Festival, a jury of industry professionals decide on how to dispense the prizes to the movies in Official Competition, including the prestigious Golden Lion. This years group of nine includes filmmakers from across the world, with French actor Isabelle Huppert serving as Jury President. However, since I was Screen Rants sole representative at this years edition, the 81st, these awards are mine to hand out.

Unlike Huppert & Co., this jury of one isnt limited to what was and wasnt an official selection. Any of the 28 movies (and one complete miniseries) I saw in my time there is fair game. Im also ditching the festivals categories for five more standard ones, plus one that's just for fun. That said, I will be maintaining the tradition of awarding each film only once if my pick for Best Film also has the best lead performance out of the bunch,...

Daniel Craig’s Racy Turn in Luca Guadagnino’s ‘Queer’ Earns Raves at Venice Film Festival With 9-Minute Standing Ovation
Image
The Venice Film Festival showered Luca Guadagnino’s Queer with lots of love Tuesday night at the film’s world premiere. In particular, the capacity crowd inside Sala Grande went wild for star Daniel Craig, who broke away from his James Bond persona for a provocative and challenging role opposite Drew Starkey, who also earned cheers from the capacity crowd that included Pedro Almodóvar.

The Spanish auteur, who is also in the Venice competition with his buzzy drama The Room Next Door, was seated across the row from Guadagnino and his cast. He embraced them one by one during the lengthy standing ovation. Craig looked emotional at several points as his wife, Rachel Weisz, was beaming and hollering in unison with the crowd while standing on her feet.

Daniel Craig and Drew Starkey’s Psychedelic Sexual Awakening in Luca Guadagnino’s ‘Queer’ Earns 9-Minute Venice Ovation
Image
Daniel Craig delivers a career-best performance in Luca Guadagnino’s romantic drama “Queer,” playing a gay American expat in 1950s Mexico City. The drama, with its explicit love scenes, swept up a packed theater at its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival on Tuesday night, earning a 9-minute standing ovation.

When the applause began, Craig looked flushed and misty-eyed as he hugged Guadagnino. The crowd chanted “Luca! Luca! Luca!” while the ovation continued, with each actor coming down the Sala Grande steps from where they sat in the balcony to bow individually. During his turn, Craig blew kisses to the crowd as his wife, Rachel Weisz, smiled proudly.

When Craig and Starkey at last embraced, Guadagnino — and the rest of the audience — erupted in cheers as the two gripped each other in celebration. Pedro Almodóvar, whose new film “The Room Next Door” received the longest standing ovation of the fest so far with 17 minutes,...

Daniel Craig Wanted to Make ‘Queer’ Sex Scenes as ‘Touching and Real and Natural’ as Possible: ‘We Tried to Make It Fun’

Daniel Craig opened up about filming sex scenes for Luca Guadagnino’s “Queer” during the film’s Venice Film Festival press conference, saying he and co-star Drew Starkey “tried to make it fun.”

Daniel Craig's First Post-007 Movie Role Couldn't Be Further From James Bond
Image
Craig's departure from James Bond in No Time To Die confirms he is moving on to new roles, starting with Queer in 2024. Queer will showcase a completely different side of Craig's acting by playing a complex and insecure character in a romantic drama setting. The tone and themes of Queer are vastly different from Craig's Bond films, offering a more mellow and introspective experience.

Having finally left the iconic role of 007 behind, Daniel Craig's first new movie after James Bond couldn't be more different from the action franchise. Craig has spent a large part of his career as James Bond, but his final outing in No Time To Die has allowed him to explore new projects. He did a fantastic job of portraying one of cinema's most famous characters, having played him in five different movies over the span of 15 years, and his incredible performances mean Craig has been...

Luca Guadagnino’s Venice-Bound ‘Queer,’ Starring Daniel Craig and Drew Starkey, Gets a First Look
Image
Luca Guadagnino’s “Challengers” follow-up transports audiences back in time.

Guadagnino’s “Queer,” written by “Challengers” screenwriter Justin Kuritzkes and adapted from William S. Burroughs’ 1985-published novella, stars Daniel Craig as an American expat and war veteran who begins a romance with a younger man (Drew Starkey). The film, as expected, will debut in competition at the 2024 Venice Film Festival, and of today’s surprises was the confirmed casting of pop star Omar Apollo with a top-billed role in the film.

“Queer” follows William Lee (Craig), now in his late 40s and in 1940s Mexico City, reminiscing about his past life among American expatriate college students and barkeeps eking out their own living on part-time jobs and GI benefits. Lee ends up chasing a young student named Eugene Allerton. For his novella, “Naked Lunch” writer Burroughs allegedly based the Allerton character on a man named Adelbert Lewis Marker, a discharged...

Eastwood stars as Earl Stone with Bradley Cooper as DEA Special Agent Colin Bates. ‘Exploited’ VOD Review
Image
Stars: Colin Bates, Jordan Ver Hoeve, Andrew Matthew Welch, Makenzie Vega, Sierra McCormick, Will Peltz, Spencer List, Leah Pipes | Written by Carl Moellenberg, Anthony Del Negro | Directed by Jon Abrahams

Exploited gets off to a start that certainly lives up to its title as webcam performer Caleb is beaten to death in mid-performance.

Move forward a few months to the start of a new school year and Brian (Jordan Ver Hoeve; 666: Teen Warlock) is moving into his dorm room and starting college life. After walking in on his roommate Jeremy and his girlfriend Lexi he starts to get settled in. He doesn’t notice a flash drive identical to the one the school gave him sitting on the desk. He’s in for a nasty shock as it contains videos of the online sexual activity of the room’s previous occupant. And, in the last video, being murdered.

Exploited review – college slasher is a toxic pile of yuckiness
Jordan Ver Hoeve
While there’s something to be said for tilting the hetero norms of the genre, the rest of this low-grade nasty should be swiftly consigned to history

But right about now, there’s not much to be said for it, save for a certain wry irony in the pertly self-aware title.

Jordan Ver Hoeve brings minimal nuance to the role of Brian, just starting at college and coming to terms with his gay identity. Having just met his hunky roommate Jeremy (Andrew Matthew Welch), who is diffidently making out with his girlfriend on...

Image
The acclaimed Bob Dylan musical Girl From The North Country will play its final Broadway performance at The Belasco Theatre on Jan. 23, with producers saying they’re in advanced conversations with the Shubert Organization to re-open in the spring after the Omicron surge subsides.

Image

The Tony Awards Administration Committee met yesterday in the first of the several eligibility meetings the group will have before the end of the season next spring.

This round of decisions mostly addresses acting category decisions, determining whether various cast members of often large ensembles fall into the lead slots.

A decision was also made on Trouble in Mind, the Alice Childress play originally staged Off Broadway in 1955 that had never been produced on Broadway until this season. As it did several seasons ago with Mart Crowley’s 1968 play The Boys in the Band,...
