Let's dream-cast an English-language spinoff of Squid Game
Image
No one saw the popularity of Squid Game coming, but here we are. Thanks to the combination of betrayal, drama, and comedy, the high-stakes survival drama became a perfect binge for Netflix subscribers. It led to the reality show Squid Game: The Challenge, and now an English-speaking spinoff is being developed by director David Fincher (Fight Club and Se7en).

To be fair, we're still not sure if the spinoff will actually happen of it if will die before it sees the light of day. Also worth noting it that it's not a remake, but they're not looking to case English-speaking version of the characters we already met in the original. Instead, it will be a new story set elsewhere in the world, with a whole new crop of cash-strapped contestants drafted to participate in the deadly Squid Games in the hopes of walking away with the grand prize, even...

Andy Samberg and Jason Momoa are joining forces for an action comedy film at Netflix
Jack Black
After building a rock-solid franchise foundation alongside Jack Black in A Minecraft Movie, Jason Momoa will join forces with Andy Samberg for an untitled action comedy film at Netflix. Details about the project remain scarce, though Deadline says the film’s events unfold in Hawaii.

In addition to starring in the movie, Andy Samberg’s Party Over Here and Jason Momoa’s On the Roam studios will produce. The untitled action comedy does not have a director yet. However, 11x Emmy nominee Rob Klein and eight-time nominee John Solomon are writing the script.

After showing off his dramatic chops as Davy Scherman in the Ellen Kuras-directed docudrama Lee, starring Kate Winslet as war correspondent Lee Miller, Andy Samberg wrapped production on The Roses, a dark comedy about what happens when a tinderbox of competition and resentments underneath the façade of a picture-perfect couple ignites. A Subhash K Jha Review – “A Nice Indian Boy, When Mother Knows Best”
Image
In that recent Tamil film Kaadhal Enbadhu Podhu Udamai, when the daughter brings her same-sex lover home for dinner, the mother (Rohini) loses all control.

The mother in A Nice Indian Boy, Megha, played with warmth, curiosity, dread, and acceptance by Zarna Garg, is much more accommodating. I won’t say she is a true liberal, although Megha would like to think she is. When her son Naveen (Karan Soni) brings home his boyfriend Jay (Jonathan Groff), Mom Megha welcomes him as she ought to: a liberal Indian mom who wants only her son to be happy.

Of course, in actuality, life’s decisions are not that simply laid out on the table. It is this struggle to do the right thing which makes Megha one of the most special mothers I’ve seen on screen in recent times.

Unlike other conservative mothers who don’t even put on a show of acceptance,...

A Nice Indian Boy is charming, funny, deeply emotional, and oh so full of love
Image
The critically acclaimed and audience applauded, A Nice Indian Boy is available to stream now and we say “Go Click Play Now”. Directed by Roshan Sethi, the film was written by Eric Randall, based on the play by Madhuri Shekar. A Nice Indian Boy features incredible performances by Karan Soni and Jonathan Groff. The film also boasts an outstanding supporting cast, including Sunita Mani, Zarna Garg, Harish Patel, Peter S. Kim, and Sas Goldberg.

Our story begins with a meet-cute that turns, as love stories are wont to do, into a beautiful journey, at times fraught with tension, but also full of heart, all reaching for a happily ever after (Hea). Naveen is a self-effacing, soft-spoken doctor with a boisterous mother, Megha, seemingly perfect sister, Arundhathi, and quiet father, Archit. The Gavaskars are outwardly accepting of Naveen’s sexuality but have never had to confront it in practice. Then Naveen...

Death of a Unicorn (2025) Movie Ending Explained & Themes Analyzed: What are The Unicorn Tapestries and How are they Connected to the Leopolds?
Jenna Ortega in La Muerte De Un Unicornio (2025)
“Death of a Unicorn,” the new horror comedy from A24, follows the recent trend of Eat the Rich-themed stories. It is also a satirical look into the lives of the uber-rich. However, instead of showing the working class plotting against them, it shows the ignorant and self-aggrandizing upper class leading to its own demise. It’s the kind of conceit we have seen many times in recent years, whether through Mike White’s “The White Lotus,” Jesse Armstrong’s “Succession,” or Ruben Östlund’s “Triangle of Sadness.” Still, it manages to bite now and then, mainly because of Will Poulter’s scene-stealing performance as a cocky rich brat. It ultimately ends on a complicated note of catharsis for its central characters. Let’s unpack the same.

Spoilers Ahead

Benedict Cumberbatch, Olivia Colman Brawl Over Bitter Divorce in ‘The Roses’ Trailer

Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman play a picture-perfect married couple who descend into a bitter cat-and-dog divorce battle in the trailer for The Roses, director Jay Roach’s dark comedy.

‘The Roses’ Trailer: Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman’s Marriage Goes to Hell in New Take on ‘The War of the Roses’
Image
Searchlight has released the first trailer for “The Roses,” starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman in a marriage turning sour. A reimagining of the 1989 black comedy “The War of the Roses,” “The Roses” is directed and produced by Jay Roach with a screenplay by Tony McNamara. Both films are inspired by Warren Adler’s 1981 novel “The War of the Roses.”

The film follows Ivy (Colman) and Theo (Cumberbatch), a seemingly perfect California couple with successful careers, great kids and a loving marriage. But when Theo’s career begins to nosedive as Ivy’s ambitions take off, their ideal life crumbles and the couple’s hidden resentments bubble to the surface.

Andy Samberg, Allison Janney, Ncuti Gatwa, Kate McKinnon, Sunita Mani, Jamie Demetriou, Zoë Chao and Belinda Bromilow also star. “The Roses” is produced by Michelle Graham, Ed Sinclair and Tom Carver, with Benedict Cumberbatch under his SunnyMarch banner alongside producing...

Government Cheese TV Review: David Oyelowo leads a surreal retro comedy from Apple TV+
Image
Plot: A surrealist family comedy set in 1969 San Fernando Valley that tells the story of the Chambers, a quirky family pursuing lofty and seemingly impossible dreams, beautifully unfettered by the realities of the world. When Hampton Chambers is released from prison, his long-awaited family reunion doesn’t go quite as he’d planned. During his absence, Hampton’s wife, Astoria, and sons, Einstein and Harrison, have formed an unconventional family unit, and Hampton’s return spins their world into chaos.

Review: The aesthetics of filmmakers like Wes Anderson and Joel and Ethan Coen are unique, original, and ultimately divisive for audiences. Love or hate them, you cannot deny that Anderson and The Coen Brothers offer something few filmmakers can replicate. The new Apple TV+ series Government Cheese offers an attempt to tell a family-oriented comedy-drama set in the late 1960s with the quirky feel of a Wes Anderson film if...

“It’s Not a Coming-Out Story”: A Nice Indian Boy co-stars Sunita Mani and Zarna Garg talk the Differences of Stand-up Comedy and Filmmaking and the Bond of Being Indian-Americans (Interview)
Image
After its March 2024 debut at South by Southwest, Jonathan Groff and Karan Soni’s gay rom-com A Nice Indian Boy has finally found its release.

We at FandomWire spoke with co-stars Sunita Mani and Zarna Garg about how the central conflict was created, how the cast bonded before filming, and why this is a different type of rom-com.

A Nice Indian Boy Interview Courtesy of Levantine Films – Sunita Mani as Arundhathi Gavaskar in A Nice Indian Boy RelatedA Nice Indian Boy Review — Rom-Com Brings Fresh Perspective and Joy

FandomWire: Sunita, your character is fascinating because she has this sense of progressiveness as a younger woman, but at the same time, she resists change and becomes a source of conflict. How did you approach those two seemingly contradictory traits, and how did you work to bring them out in your performance?

Sunita Mani: Arundhathi is 100% a walking contradiction. She has this “Rage Against the Machine” attitude,...

"Tenacity Is the Key": David Oyelowo Gives a Determined Update on 'The Return of the Rocketeer' [Exclusive]
Image
David Oyelowo is still determined to take to the skies in The Return of the Rocketeer, a sequel to the 1991 cult classic The Rocketeer. First announced in 2021, the film is to be produced by, and possibly star, Oyelowo, and is to center around a retired member of the Tuskegee Airmen who takes up the high-flying mantle of the Rocketeer. Oyelowo spoke about the project with Collider's Christina Radish while promoting his new Apple TV+ series, Government Cheese.

Says Oyelowo of the long-in-development sequel:

"I’m definitely still trying to get it done, especially when you see what’s happening to the legacy of the Tuskegee Airmen as it pertains to what’s going on in the country politically at the moment. To get that film made is definitely something I’m very, very focused on. One of the hardest things with any project you’re developing is when there’s regime change,...

Theatrical Release Pace Picks Up As Curtain Falls On CinemaCon & Dour First Quarter – Specialty Preview
Image
The pace is picking up with studio wide release A Minecraft Movie booming and plenty of indie fare to fill out behind from Neon’s Hell of a Summer and IFC Films’ The Luckiest Man in America to Fathom’s next installment of The Chosen and expansions of The Friend from Bleecker Street and Gkids’ re-release of Princess Mononoke.

CinemaCon, the biggest annual gathering of theater owners and studios, wrapped last night in Las Vegas. Exhibitors’ tempers were strained by a sour first quarter at the box office and there was an explosion of talk around longer theatrical windows which will for sure remain an ongoing conversation. That said, Q1 is behind us so here’s to hoping for a sustained period of more movies — many highlighted in Vegas — and higher-grossing movies to lift all boats.

Neon opens Hell Of A Summer on 1,255 screens after Thursday previews and early shows took in $215k.

‘Death of a Unicorn’ Review
Image
Stars: Paul Rudd, Jenna Ortega, Will Poulter, Téa Leoni, Richard E. Grant, Anthony Carrigan, Sunita Mani, Jessica Hynes, Stephen Park | Written and Directed by Alex Scharfman

Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega co-star in this blackly satirical horror from debut writer-director Alex Scharfman. Produced by A24, it’s a refreshingly original creature feature that delivers a potent cocktail of dark humour, emotion and monster-related thrills.

Death of a Unicorn centres on compliance lawyer Eliot (Rudd) and his college-aged daughter Ridley (Ortega), who have had a difficult relationship since the death of Ridley’s mother, some time previously. On their way to a remote compound owned by cancer-stricken pharmaceutical billionaire Odell Leopold (Richard E. Grant), Eliot and Ridley accidentally knock down and kill a unicorn, which Ridley bonds with by touching its glowing horn, shortly before Eliot bashes its head in with a tire iron.

When they meet the rest of the...

Posterized April 2025: April, The Ugly Stepsister, Emergent City & More
Image
It’s a month full of “operatives” and each received an effective if familiar campaign. The same goes for April’s videogame adaptations too (Minecraft on April 4 and Until Dawn on April 25). Glossy, plastic, and muddy.

Once again, Hollywood plays it safe. Get the job done, don’t alienate audiences, and never truly inspire them either. So, it’s nice to see a few smaller titles sticking to pure ingenuity as a contrast. Whether fun, aesthetically pleasing, or bold, the below nine one-sheets have what it takes to turn a head. They avoid generic tropes and build themselves from the inside out to provide intrigue above mere utility.

Is Blt Communications, LLC’s poster for The Legend of Ochi (April 25) a posed portrait? Highly unlikely. Unlike the usual Photoshop-heavy composites going for a collage look, however, they’ve decided to let their amalgam retain a sense of reality via...

A Nice Indian Boy Review — Rom-Com Brings Fresh Perspective and Joy
Image
Few movie scenes this year are as joyous as the central gay wedding in Roshan Sethi’s A Nice Indian Boy. It comes after weeks of turmoil that Karan Soni’s Naveen faces after falling in love with a white man (Jonathan Groff) and the way his traditional Indian family reacts to it all. The film serves as a unique twist on a familiar classic, driven by an incredible performance from Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse‘s Soni.

A Nice Indian Boy Review

Naveen is a thirty-something gay man feeling lost in his relationship troubles while everybody seems to have it together. It’s not until a chance encounter while praying that he runs into Jay (Groff) that he feels like he’s finally found a partner worth fighting for. After bringing him home to his parents, things quickly fall apart.

The thing is, his family doesn’t seem to...

‘A Nice Indian Boy’ Review: This Charming Interracial Rom-Com Packs a Bollywood Twist
Image
Editor’s Note: This review was originally published during the 2024 SXSW Film & TV Festival. Wayfarer Studios releases “A Nice Indian Boy” in select theaters Friday, April 4.

I did not have Jonathan Groff singing “Tujhe Dekha To Yeh Jana Sanam” on my 2024 bingo card. The Broadway actor humbly steps into Indian culture in Roshan Sethi’s “A Nice Indian Boy,” which repeatedly connects back to Aditya Chopra’s “Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge” — the film that originated “Tujhe Dekha”.

Written by Eric Randall (and based on Madhuri Shekar’s play), “A Nice Indian Boy” is all about subverting stereotypes about Indian culture, both within and outside of the community. The title itself is a cheeky twist on every aunty’s favorite refrain: that when a girl is of the right age, she or her family will find her a “nice Indian boy” to settle down with.

This time, however, protagonist Naveen (Karan Soni...

Every Creature Easter Egg You Missed In Death Of A Unicorn
Image
This article contains spoilers for "Death of a Unicorn."

When pop culture was invaded en masse by geeks, we began to see a huge uptick of references to other movies, TV shows, and the like. Heck, you could argue that some media was created almost as a delivery system for such references — "The Big Bang Theory," anyone? Of course, references within movies and TV shows to other movies and TV shows are certainly nothing new, but the rise of geek culture sure did make what used to be implicit, explicit. That approach to references hasn't gone away, if recent films like "Free Guy" are any indication. Yet it seems like the subtler, old-school version of making references and paying homage is still alive and well, too. Easter eggs can still be fun and unobtrusive rather than a filmmaker flaunting their trivial bonafides.

An example of the latter is this week's "Death of a Unicorn,...

We Deserve a Better Takedown of the Rich Than ‘Death of a Unicorn’
Image
The rich, they are not like you and I — they see the world through the jaundiced lens of extreme privilege, they view everything from retail luxury items to relationships as disposable (and easily replaceable), they think nothing of hunting mythical beasts for sport and/or the key to immortality. Death of a Unicorn starts from the position of wanting to roast the rancidest members of the already rotten one-percent on a spit, and if there was ever a time to embrace a class-conscious horror-comedy involving giggles, rage, and gore, it’s right now.

Death of a Unicorn Review: A Mythical, Predictable Genre Mash-Up
Image
Note: This review was originally published as part of our 2025 SXSW coverage. Death of a Unicorn opens in theaters on March 28 from A24.

A film with a few solid laughs and crowd-pleasing moments, Death of a Unicorn never quite pushes the envelope as far as it could or should. Landing somewhere between a traditional horror comedy and a Succession-lite satire, Alex Scharfman’s debut feature is a reimagining of the unicorn maiden mythology that finds father-daughter duo Elliot (Paul Rudd) and Ridley (Jenna Ortega) in the middle of a peculiar situation. En route to visit Elliot’s mogul boss on a remote nature preserve, they unexpectedly run over a unicorn. Ridley experiences a hypnotic trip gazing into the eyes of the mythical creature, causing Elliot to beat it to a purple bloody pulp and stow it in the trunk.

Elliot is a fixer hoping to elevate himself to full power...

Alex Scharfman has been working in the indie movie scene for a good 15 years as everything from a location manager to a production executive. Now, he’s been given the reins as writer and director of the newest A24 horror/comedy, Death of a Unicorn.

Death of a Unicorn is about a lawyer named Elliot Kintner who, along with his teenaged daughter Ridley (Jenna Ortega from Beetlejuice Beetlejuice), is travelling to the secluded home of a wealthy pharmaceutical baron named Odell Leopold (Saltburn’s Richard E. Grant) to hopefully join the corporation. On their way through the wilderness, Elliot and Ridley hit a unicorn with their car and kill it.
