Taraji P. Henson’s new overall deal at BET Studios is already paying dividends, with Henson in talks to produce and star in “Queenie,” a new series about Stephanie St. Clair, otherwise known as the “Godmother of Harlem.”
Adapted by Leigh Davenport, the series is based on the book “The World of Stephanie St. Clair: An Entrepreneur, Race Woman and Outlaw in the Early Twentieth Century Harlem” by Shirley Stewart. It tells the true story of St. Clair, who in the 1920s and ’30s was “the most profitable female ‘numbers banker’ in an illegal underworld run by the most vicious and notorious of men.”

Exclusive: Kevin Iannucci (The Best Of Enemies) and Bethany Brown (Charmed) are set as series regulars opposite Ben Rappaport and Alexandra Chando in NBC’s untitled drama pilot based on the award-winning Dutch series Adam & Eva. The pilot is written by The Village creator Mike Daniels and will be directed by Stephanie Laing.
The project, described as a funny and heartfelt drama, chronicles the epic love and lives of two complete strangers, Adam (Rappaport) and Eva (Chando), whose multiple run-ins begin to defy coincidence, leading both to believe in fate. The show breaks the mold by pairing a serialized, stand-up-and-cheer romantic comedy with the wildly diverse and often unexpected human stories of anyone who finds themselves six degrees from Adam and Eva.
Iannucci will play Derek, Adam’s new co-worker, a damn-the-torpedoes truth-teller on a quest to find love.
Brown will portray Neela, Eva’s former art school buddy, current roommate and ride-or-die best friend.

March brings breezes loud and shrill/stirs the dancing daffodil. Bit of poetry for you there. What Sara Coleridge fails to mention is that March also brings season seven of Brooklyn Nine-Nine to Netflix UK, more weekly episodes of Riverdale season five, a brand new sci-fi series from the creators of Misfits, a new film directed by Amy Poehler and a host of cool animated series.
The One (pictured above) is an eight-part British series created by Howard Overman about a near-future world in which a DNA test can track down your perfect partner. It’s adapted from John Marrs’ novel of the same name, and yes, has a strikingly similar premise to US anthology sci-fi Soulmates. Animated adventure film “Abominable” is heading for a moderate but dominant $18 million opening weekend at 4,242 North American sites, early estimates showed on Friday.
The second weekend of Focus Features’ “Downton Abbey” is leading the rest of the pack with about $14 million, which will give the big-screen version of the British TV drama around $58 million in its first 10 days. A trio of holdovers are battling for third place in the $9 million to $11 million range: Stx’s third weekend of “Hustlers,” Disney-Fox’s second frame of Brad Pitt’s “Ad Astra” and Warner Bros.’ fourth session of horror sequel “It: Chapter Two,” which will finish the weekend with about $192 million domestically in its first 24 days.

“Hustlers” rolled in the Benjamins this weekend, collecting $33.2 million when it debuted in 3,250 North American theaters.
Boosted by rave reviews and stellar word of mouth, “Hustlers” beat expectations and now ranks as the best start for an Stx film, along with the biggest live-action opening weekend for stars Jennifer Lopez and Constance Wu. Directed by Lorene Scafaria, the R-rated heist thriller is based on Jessica Pressler’s 2015 New York magazine article about a group of strippers who turn the tables on their wealthy Wall Street clientele after the 2008 recession hits.
“Hustlers” arrived in second place behind Warner Bros.’ “It: Chapter Two,” which claimed the No. 1 spot for the second weekend in a row. The terrifying sequel pocketed another $40 million this weekend, marking a 55% decline from its inaugural outing. The follow-up to 2017’s “It” has earned $153 million in North America and $323 million globally. Between “It: Chapter Two” and its predecessor, the...

As the big Hollywood studios evolve, consolidate and get bigger, the road to success for indie production houses like Treehouse Pictures is to somehow artfully fill in the space between the big-budget blockbusters, super hero flicks and IP-driven franchises. This year has seen several indie films underperform at the box office, including Stx Entertainment’s “The Best of Enemies,” Amazon’s glitzy Sundance purchase, “Late Night,” and Annapurna’s “Booksmart.” But despite the otherwise disappointing year for indie films, there remains the belief that there’s room for more. Treehouse Pictures President and founder Justin Nappi (pictured above), and head of development Juliet Berman talked to TheWrap about the challenges of operating in today’s market and how indie production studios can stand apart. June 30th marks the 30th anniversary of the release of Spike Lee’s 1989 masterpiece, “Do the Right Thing.” Controversial when it was first released (the media publicly speculated that it would ignite violence), the film explores how racial inequality drives conflict in a predominantly African-American community on the hottest day of the summer. Lee’s masterwork remains profoundly relevant 30 years later, especially against the backdrop of one of the more openly vile and racist administrations in recent American history. As problematic racial reconciliation films like “Green Book” and “The Best of Enemies” continue to thrive in mainstream American cinema, pushing racist tropes ahead of fully realized characters and “solving” racism with easy answers, “Do the Right Thing” is only more essential in speaking to the present day.
Inspired by the racially-motivated killings of a black man named Michael Griffith and an elderly black woman named Eleanor Bumpurs, “Do the Right...

“This episode is really a love letter to Mexico City,” reveals”The Romanoffs” composer Marcelo Zarvos. The music veteran was enlisted to score an installment of the Matthew Weiner-created Amazon anthology series, which follows a variety of people who believe they are descendants of the Russian royal family. Watch our exclusive video interview with Zarvos above.
See Christina Hendricks interview: ‘The Romanoffs’ and ‘Good Girls’
His episode, entitled “Panorama,” centers on a gossip columnist (Juan Pablo Castañeda) who falls in love with a mysterious American woman (Radha Mitchell) visiting Mexico City. The Brazilian-born composer says Weiner wanted “somebody who understood the flavor” of the region to write the score. But at the same time “the music is not scoring contemporary Mexico.” It’s really meant to reflect the main character, who is “a very idealistic, very romantic guy.” So Zarvos created a sound that was closer to “classical Latin American or Spanish music.

Fact-based drama Richard Jewell is Clint Eastwood’s next news-story-inspired directorial effort.
Clint Eastwood may be pushing 90 years old (he turned 89 on May 31), but he’s still got plenty of creative fuel in his proverbial tank; a notion supported by his next directorial effort, Richard Jewell (formerly The Ballad of Richard Jewell), which will focus on the security guard wrongfully accused of attempting to bomb a town square near the 1996 Olympic Games.
Indeed, the onscreen legend and Oscar-winning director, Eastwood, occupied the director’s chair for the Disney/Fox fact-based drama. The film, based on an article of the same name from Vanity Fair, had Eastwood working off a script by Billy Ray, who worked on action-horror film Overlord, Tom Hanks-headlined Captain Phillips, film franchise launcher The Hunger Games and served as writer and credited creator of (now-canceled) Amazon series The Last Tycoon.

For the second consecutive week, Shazam! held on tightly to the top spot on the Box-Office Weekend leaderboard. This week, the film’s second in release, the latest film in the DC Extended Universe, added $25.1 million to give it a two-week total of $94.9 million. The Zachary Levi-led film continues to perform will internationally as well, adding $35.9 million to give it a global two-week total of approximately $258.8 million.
The next two films on the countdown are two of the four new entries in the top ten this weekend. The first, the comedy Little, debuted in second place with $15.5 million. The Best of Enemies is directed by Robin Bissell and follows the intense relationship between Ku Klux Klan president C.P. Shazam! fell over 50% from last weekend and was still able to easily dominate this weekend's box office with $25.1 million. The DC movie has been receiving praise from fans and critics, who are excited about the lighter tone and family atmosphere. David F. Sandberg, Zachary Levi, and the young cast were able to put something honest and unique on the big screen, giving comic book fans something different from the genre.
Body-swapping comedy Little stars Regina Hall, Marsai Martin, and Issa Rae debuted at number two this weekend with $15.5 million, which was more than enough to take down the Hellboy remake. The Neil Marshall-directed movie took the third position and was only able to bring in $12 million for its debut after it was expected to make anywhere from $16 million to $21 million. However, the remake has been getting torn apart by critics, though some comic book fans were satisfied with the hard R-rating and action.

As studios double down on franchises, sequels, comic books, and events that pull audiences into bigger-better-brighter cinemas, movies that cost less than $50 million look like an endangered species. Studios already find it tough to justify risky, original dramas — like F. Gary Gray’s “Straight Outta Compton,” which cost $28 million and grossed $206 million worldwide. Universal Filmed Entertainment Group chairman Donna Langley nurtured that movie, and fought to make it. But not every movie has such a passionate champion.

There are certain criteria for being a Hollywood A-lister and nobody is crossing off items faster than Sam Rockwell. Host SNL? Check. Win an Oscar? Check. What's left on the list? How about a miniseries? Rockwell is about to star in the upcoming eight-part FX series Fosse/Verdon, playing notorious Broadway choreographer Bob Fosse. He also recently starred in the indie-drama film The Best of Enemies, in which he plays a white supremacist opposite Taraji P. Henson. Sam Rockwell is everywhere right now and shows no signs of slowing down.

For better or worse, race-reconciliation movies are a longstanding Hollywood tradition. The formula is often the same: Stories are set in the Civil Rights era — from the mid-1950s through the early 1970s — and center on black-white relationships, with a white protagonist who is transformed by a relationship with a black person. There are exceptions, but in the crudest cases, the black person in question is usually just a narrative device for an emotional arc built around the white character’s transformation. And “The Best of Enemies” is the latest proof that Hollywood needs to find new ways to tell these stories.
This problem has some precedents in Hollywood. Prior to WWII, seminal films like “The Birth of a Nation” (1915) and “Gone with the Wind” (1939) helped formulate popular misconceptions of the Reconstruction with ahistorical portrayals of the antebellum South. “Birth” director D.W. Griffith asserted that he was simply depicting the historical truth,...

The unbelievable has happened, that is, a film in the DC Extended Universe has proven both critically and commercially popular. Shazam! performed above expectations, delivering a debut opening weekend of $53.5 million. The film, starring Zachary Levi, did well internationally as well, generating approximately $102 million to give it a worldwide opening weekend somewhere south of $160 million.
The horror film remake Pet Sematary debuted just behind Shazam! with $25 million, giving it the second-best performance on opening weekend for a Stephen King movie, just behind It (2017). The live-action version of Dumbo finished in third place with $18.2 million and a two-week total of $76.3 million. Just behind that adorable pachyderm was Jordan Peele’s horror film Us, which added another $13.8 million in its third week of release to bring its total to $152.4 million.

Shazam! easily took down this weekend's box office with a heroic $53.4 million domestic debut. David F. Sandberg's first jump into the comic book genre has been getting good reviews from critics and DC fans are enjoying it just as much. The lighthearted take on the genre has quite a few twists and turns, leaving it wide open for a sequel, which will probably happen since the response to the first installment has been so strong. The movie was able to snag another $102 million overseas for a grand total of $158 million globally.
The Pet Sematary remake has also been getting positive reactions (though it received a C+ from CinemaScore), but it was still no match for Shazam! Let us take a look right now at just that… Soaring up to the top spot this weekend, with a nice haul to boot, was DC’s newest superhero movie Shazam!, which charmed audiences in a big way. $53.4 million worth of charm, to be exact. With strong buzz and positive word of mouth, this could actually have some decent legs too. Until Avengers: Endgame hits,...

In a post-“Green Book” world, the controversial yet superficial tale of race relations and reconciliation that somehow won the Oscar for Best Picture, audiences have rightly had it with misguided, devaluing depictions on screen. Maybe employing the story of black exceptionalism and black oppression to examine a white man’s redemption and self-realization is maybe not the most thoughtful and sensitive approach, right? So, Stx Entertainment’s desegregation drama “The Best of Enemies,” released in the wake of that film and those mistakes, arrives awkwardly into theaters this week, relitigating the contentious Oscar win of “Green Book” and reopening old wounds.

“Shazam!” topped pre-opening estimates with a #1 showing at over $53 million. Combined with a good foreign debut, that brought the kids-oriented D.C. title to close to $160 million. In most territories, the Easter holiday should help sustain grosses, especially with a strong A Cinemascore.
Stephen King remake “Pet Sematary” took second place with $25 million, also bettering predictions, while “The Best of Enemies” fell short with a $4.5 million take.
On average, it’s a good outcome for the three opening films. However, theaters saw an overall gross 10% lower than the same weekend last year, and the year-to-date gross continues to lag. Box office to date is $2.6 billion, compared to $3.1 billion this time last year.

The weekend played out mostly as expected with the release of Shazam! from Warner Bros. and New Line securing the top spot in both the domestic and worldwide marketplace while Paramount's release of Pet Sematary scored the second largest opening for a Stephen King adaptation. Stx's The Best of Enemies, however, fell a bit below expectations as April is off to a solid start, but it won't be until the release of Avengers: Endgame at the end of the month that we'll be able to see whether this April will be able to challenge last year's record monthly grosses. At the top of the box office, Warner Bros.'s release of New Line's Shazam! delivered just above expectations with an estimated $53.4 million for a cumulative total that stands at $56.7 million once you add in grosses from the late March, Fandango special event. The film was well received by...

Warner Bros./New Line’s “Shazam!” may not have a superhero with the name recognition of Batman, Wonder Woman, or Aquaman — but it showing box office superpowers with an estimated $53.4 million opening weekend from 4,217 screens.
When advance screenings held two weeks ago by Fandango are factored in, the domestic launch for David F. Sandberg’s superhero film comes in at $56.7 million, with $6 million coming from 405 domestic IMAX screens. That roughly matches the opening weekend for “Ant-Man,” another film with a superhero that had little pre-existing name recognition. Unlike “Ant-Man,” “Shazam” has been reported to have a much cheaper budget of $90-100 million, far lower than the $150 million-plus budgets of most superhero films.
With “Avengers: Endgame” coming in three weeks to blot out all blockbuster competition, “Shazam” needed to build strong word of mouth to get strong holds in the next two weekends. In that regard, it’s mission accomplished as...

Sunday Am Update: New Line/DC’s Shazam! posted a solid hold on Saturday of $19.75M, -4%, putting its opening weekend at $53.45M. Add those Fandango $3.3M paid previews from March 23 and the DC superhero who was originally known as Captain Marvel has a running total of $56.7M. Shazam! flew in ahead of projections which were at $45M-$50M for the DC film. Warners knew it was working as they spotted heat on their social media diagnostics in recent weeks.
It was a bold move to date Shazam! in between Disney/Marvel’s Captain Marvel and upcoming April 26 release Avengers: Endgame, and to make this vintage DC property work, “we needed the movie to be its own best friend in terms of creating interest” Warner Bros. Pictures Group Chairman Toby Emmerich told Deadline this morning. That meant screening the movie in advance well in advance to create word of mouth.

Chicago - According to my YouTube history, unlikely animal friendships would likely be in my top 10 most watched videos, alongside Diy home projects and finding out if that sharp pain means I’m dying. Something as simple as a cat and dog being bffs is adorable, but unlike what “The Best of Enemies” would have you believe, two naturally opposing forces don’t always need to play nice.

“Based on a true story” is one of those terms that is thrown around pretty casually when it comes to film. It could mean anything from, “Hey, we’re giving you most of these real events that happened!” to “These real people existed, but we basically made everything else up!” Usually, if the story sounds too good to be true, it likely isn’t. In the case of activist Ann Atwater and former Klan leader C.P. Ellis, the real story is stranger than fiction.
