Mythologies have always been a rich source of inspiration for current stories, with retellings and themes blending into novels, movies and even the anime of today. This reliance on the myths and tales from generations past have led to some of the most epic and fantastical anime series of all time. The rich tapestry of the world, with each culture creating their own unique fables and myths, has inspired quite a number of larger-than-life characters within the anime sphere.
While quite a few anime series incorporate myths in some form or fashion, only a few cement themselves as an epic. In literature, epics tend to be long-form content, usually a narrative poem, that tells the story of a hero’s journey, with a vast setting, plenty of action and noble deeds. From Kagome’s journey to recover the Sacred Jewel Shards in Inuyasha to Luffy’s quest to become the...

“When you play the game of thrones, you win or you die.” And if you’re a fan of HBO’s iconic fantasy series, you know just how true that was! With characters dropping like flies, the show introduced an unforgettable cast over its eight-season run. Premiering in 2011, Game of Thrones redefined television with its gripping storytelling, breathtaking battles, and jaw-dropping betrayals.
Back then, many of its stars were either rising newcomers—like Emilia Clarke, Kit Harington, Sophie Turner, and Maisie Williams—or established actors who found even greater fame, including Peter Dinklage, Lena Headey, and Sean Bean.
Some, like Clarke and Harington, have kept the fantasy spirit alive with new projects, while Turner and Williams have explored bold, unconventional roles. Meanwhile, Dinklage continues to prove his versatility, and Headey has taken on exciting new challenges. Whether ruling new realms on-screen or making waves in Hollywood, the Game of Thrones...

As Hollywood has begun to focus more and more on live-action adaptations of anime, Tite Kubo’s Bleach has been largely ignored so far. The race with the adaptations began with Netflix’s One Piece live-action, and studios quickly realized the untapped otaku market.

Knights of the Zodiac was as bad as Dragonball Evolution, if not worse. Knights of the Zodiac lacked a clear identity or vision. Good anime adaptations need a solid vision and a sufficient budget for success.
For years, I believed that no live-action adaptation could be as bad as Dragonball Evolution (2009), but Knights of the Zodiac (2023) proved me wrong. As a huge anime fan, I always found it frustrating how most Hollywood live-action anime adaptations turned out to be very disappointing. Still, there was no debate on which of them had been the worst Dragonball Evolution. Based on one of the most popular anime of all time, Dragonball Evolution had a disastrous reception and suggested that Hollywood would never be able to tackle major anime properties like Dbz or Saint Seiya.

Tite Kubo is no stranger to fame. His work with Bleach has been extravagantly awarded and praised through and through. There are many mangakas, with perhaps little to no exceptions who were inspired by others. There would always be one manga or another that inspired them either right before their magnum opus’s creation, during it, or in their early childhood.

When Netflix released Blood of Zeus in 2020, it changed the entire interpretation of Greek mythology in the anime world. The anime is one of the most popular series following a Greek storyline, along with the likes of Record of Ragnarok, Knights of the Zodiac, Rage of Bahamut, etc. And the second season of the series is scheduled for release on May 9, 2024.
Netflix’s Blood of Zeus
The show is created and written by Charley and Vlas Parlapanides for Netflix, who are known for the Death Note live-action adaptation and the 2011 Immortals, starring Henry Cavill. The Parlapanides brothers are of Greek descent, and they once revealed that they wanted to add more authenticity to the stories told by Hollywood about Greek mythologies.
They even targeted gigantic media franchises like the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the DC Universe and called their rendition of portraying Greek culture “Greek Mythology with costumes.”

Boy Kills World earned a Fresh 64% score on Rotten Tomatoes. This marks star Famke Janssen's third Fresh score since a long Rotten streak began in 2009. Janssen's future Fresh prospects lie more in upcoming TV projects than in movies.
Boy Kills World is helping to reverse a dismal Rotten Tomatoes trend for one of its stars. The action-comedy movie follows the title character Boy (Bill Skarsgrd) as he enacts bloody revenge on the people who killed his family in a violent post-apocalyptic future. The ensemble cast of the movie also includes Happy Death Day's Jessica Rothe, Downton Abbey's Michelle Dockery, X-Men's Famke Janssen, District 9's Sharlto Copley, Stranger Things' Brett Gelman, Old Spice commercial star Isaiah Mustafa, and the voice of Bob's Burgers' H. Jon Benjamin.
Rotten Tomatoes has calculated an official critic score for the movie during the weekend of the Boy Kills World release.

The quality of live-action anime adaptations has improved due to increased scrutiny in writing, directing, and acting. Mackenyu has played diverse roles in live-action anime adaptations, showcasing his versatile acting abilities. Mackenyu's portrayal of Zoro in One Piece stands out as his best performance in a live-action anime adaptation.
The quality of live-action anime movies and TV shows has improved significantly through the years, and one rising star has made prominent appearances in three entries in the medium back-to-back. Although there are plenty of bad live-action anime adaptations, the improved quality of live-action anime adaptations owes a great deal to the writing, directing, and acting being held under more scrutiny than in the past. Additionally, many of the actors who are cast in live-action anime movies and TV shows not only resemble their characters better, but they also better embody the essence of what makes them special.

A pair of movies, No Hard Feelings and Five Nights at Freddy’s, also made strong showings on the Nielsen streaming charts for the week. The former, starring Jennifer Lawrence, led the rankings with 1.13 billion minutes of viewing on Netflix in the United States — the equivalent of about 10.97 full showings of the movie. What's Netflix thrown up for us this week? "Knights of the Zodiac" of course! What is that? Well, I'll be honest, I had no idea either. But I've taken a quick look-see and as it turns out, this Japanese fantasy film is proving pretty popular with Netflixers stateside.
A live-action adaptation of Masami Kurumada's manga, "Saint Seya," "Knights of the Zodiac" stars Japanese actor Mackenyu, alongside Madison Iseman and Nick Stahl. The film is also noteworthy for reuniting Sean Bean and Famke Janssen almost 30 years after they shared the screen in "GoldenEye." Co-produced by Toei and directed by "The Witcher" illustrator/producer Tomasz Tomek Bagiński, the film also features stunt and fight choreography from former Jackie Chan stunt team member and the man behind the action in Marvel's "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings," Andy Cheng.

The success of Knights of the Zodiac on Netflix indicates that Hollywood is capable of properly adapting manga/anime, after years of disappointing live-action adaptations. Knights of the Zodiac hints that Marin is Seiya's lost sister, but the manga reveals that Marin is not Patricia in disguise. Movie adaptations of well-loved properties often flop, like Dragonball Evolution and Netflix's Knights of the Zodiac, due to poor scriptwriting and lack of faith in the source material. Dragonball Evolution failed not only because it strayed from the source material, but also because of bad visual effects, messy storylines, and controversial casting choices. Knights of the Zodiac repeats many of Dragonball Evolution's mistakes, receiving negative reviews for its use of CGI and hard-to-follow plot, but is praised for its portrayal of the anime's melodramatic atmosphere and representation of an Asian lead character.
A movie adaptation is always a risk, especially when it is tackling a well-loved property or developing an animated piece into the live-action realm, and unfortunately more often than not, these adaptations are flops, just like Dragonball Evolution and Netflix's most recent anime adaptation, Knights of the Zodiac. In 2009, Dragonball Evolution became one of the worst anime movie adaptations ever.

The live-action Saint Seiya movie, Knights of the Zodiac, deviates from the original manga significantly. Seiya's backstory in the movie differs from the manga, as he is already an adult when he begins his training to become a Pegasus Knight. Fans and the team behind the One Piece live-action adaptation are hoping to cast Jamie Lee Curtis as Dr. Kureha in the second season. Jamie Lee Curtis has already expressed her interest in the role, and the showrunner has responded positively, indicating their desire to have her on board. The addition of an acclaimed actress like Jamie Lee Curtis would be a significant boost for the already successful Netflix series, especially considering her popularity among fans.
After the enormous success of the first season of the live-action adaptation of One Piece, fans and the team behind the series are already thinking about the second season. And they want a great actress to join the cast.
Even before the release of the show, Jamie Lee Curtis had already declared herself a fan of the story created by Eiichirō Oda, so many fans began asking Netflix to hire her to play Dr.
