Horror movies have always used ghosts, vampires, zombies, and the most grotesque monsters that can be imagined by the human mind to talk about something that’s personal to the storyteller or a bigger societal issue. Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror was about immigration. Invasion of the Body Snatchers (the ‘56 one) was about fascism. The Exorcist was about religion. Heck, even Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday was about family ties. That said, while there was some semblance of balance between the themes and the gore, with budding filmmakers spending their limited budgets on the latter to at least give the people some cheap thrills, the rising popularity of what’s called “elevated horror” has shifted the scales. Now you have low-budget horror flicks using their money on “bettering” their social commentary instead of spending it on sticky special effects and gnarly visual effects. Of course, you have exceptions like Terrifier,...

A few weeks ago, I was watching a video essay from a YouTube channel called DanBoyWonder titled “The Lost Art of Action Cartoons!,” which basically stated that we aren’t getting action-oriented shows like Batman: The Animated Series, Ben 10, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Teen Titans, Swat Kats, Gargoyles, Samurai Jack, Justice League, etc., any more. He argued that recent reboots of older animated shows or the overall landscape of animated shows made in America is really bland. He did say that stuff like Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man and Invincible are decent but not as amazing as the stuff from the good old days. And you know what? I almost agreed with him. But then I realized that any discourse on the current state of American animation is incomplete without bringing up the work that Adi Shankar and his collaborators have done in this space. Castlevania’s four-season run is spectacular.

For a long time, Doctor Who has been a stalwart expression of Hollywood’s undying love for sci-fi fantasy. The BBC series may have launched to a relatively smaller audience market, but it quickly grew in both fandom and ratings after the show’s unique story arc found a foothold in pop culture.

But despite the audience’s growing love for the cult-classic sci-fi show, Doctor Who suffers from one glaring shortcoming that was as prominent when it first launched in 2005 as it is today. And while the Doctor has shed his visage time and again and his companions have changed through the years, the showrunners behind Who refuse to change one troubling aspect in its creative structure.

Robert Eggers has zero plans to make contemporary movies, featuring modern-day inventions and technology.
The Nosferatu director recently told Rotten Tomatoes that the idea of making such projects makes him feel “ill.”
“The idea of having to photograph a car makes me ill,” Eggers said. “And the idea of photographing a cellphone is just death. And to make a contemporary story you have to photograph a cellphone — it’s just how life is — so no [I won’t be making any modern-set films].”
The filmmaker has helmed several projects that have spanned periods from 1630s and 1890s New England to the Viking Era, including 2015’s The Witch, 2019’s The Lighthouse and 2022’s The Northman, respectively. Most recently, Nosferatu, starring Lily-Rose Depp, Nicholas Hoult and Bill Skarsgård, was set in 1830s Transylvania.
Elsewhere in the interview, Eggers was asked exactly how modern he would potentially go for a project. He responded, “I don’t know. I might go potentially...

Robert Eggers’ intriguing new gothic horror film, Nosferatu, has arrived on video-on-demand, although its visual brilliance and intense atmospheric presentation warrant a watch on the big screen. A remake of Murnau’s 1922 cult classic, Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror, the film follows Ellen and Thomas Hutter, a loving newlywed couple whose lives are suddenly thrown upside down because of an old curse and the presence of a terrible supernatural presence. With films like “The Witch” (2015) and “The Lighthouse” (2019), filmmaker Robert Eggers has already strengthened his reputation as a critically celebrated auteur. And in “Nosferatu” (2024), he replaces the expressionist wonder of “Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror” (1922) with the somber moodiness of his craft that shapes up the fictional town of 1830s Germany, called Wisburg, which is unaware of the oncoming of evil. In it resides realtor Thomas Hutter (Nicholas Hoult) and his newlywed wife, Ellen Hutter (Lily-Rose Depp). There’s also their friends Friedrich Harding (Aaron Taylor-Johnson), a rich merchant, and Anna Harding (Emma Corrin), who are happily married to each other with two daughters.
“Nosferatu” (2024) is dark and aggressively sensual but Eggers’ vision of the material is more of a treatise on power and evil. He makes the classic story of a real estate agent, Thomas Hutter, going up to the Pennsylvanian hills to secure a property deal with the...

Robert Eggers' Nosferatu delivers a gothic horror masterpiece, but one common horror trope negates a substantial amount of the feature's fear factor. Eggers' recent remake diverts the source material for the story's conclusion, but this has little bearing on the film's success, as Nosferatu hits a box office milestone by entering the highest-grossing horror movie charts. This makes the classic vampire tale the director's most lucrative project to date, far surpassing the performances of The Northman and The Lighthouse. The horror tale continues to pick up steam in theaters, which is impressive considering the opposing high-budget releases at present.

F.W. Murnau probably didn't know he'd wind up changing how vampires are perceived when he crafted Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror. A century later, it's considered to be one of the best vampire films ever made, and that's only been solidified with Robert Eggers's chilling remake, which is currently gathering critical acclaim and reaping box office rewards. But Eggers and other filmmakers very nearly never got the chance to put their own unique take on Count Orlok. Florence Stoker, the widow of original Dracula author Bram Stoker, filed a lawsuit against Murnau, claiming that he was committing copyright infringement with his take. Despite this, Nosferatu has managed to survive, and become an essential contribution contributing to the cinematic vampire mythos. But how did Florence Stoker's lawsuit serve as the unlikely groundwork for Nosferatu's legacy, and how did that lead to Eggers' masterful reworking of the story?...

The character and the story have had a long and fascinating past filled with legal troubles and surviving legacies, resulting in the original 1922 film, Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror, becoming an all-time classic. It’s not hyperbole to suggest that Robert Eggers has spent decades thinking about Nosferatu. In elementary school in New Hampshire, the filmmaker saw a picture of Max Schreck as Count Orlok in F.W. Murnau’s 1922 silent classic Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror and “lost my mind.” After he became obsessed with the film on VHS, a teenage Eggers directed a black-and-white stage version of Nosferatu, complete with actors painted in black and white. In 2016, after Eggers’ breakout film, The Witch, immediately made him a name to watch among cineastes, Eggers said he hoped to make Nosferatu his follow-up feature.
However, almost a decade passed before Eggers made Nosferatu. The wait has been worth it for the filmmaker and fans.

Robert Eggers' Nosferatu remake is a masterclass in honoring gothic horror tradition. One of many nods to the 1922 Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror is having Knock (played by Simon McBurney in 2024) exclaim: "The blood is the life!" This is a great homage to the German expressionist classic, in which Knock similarly says "Blood is life!" It also has literary and cultural origins which explain the terror of vampire lore used in Nosferatu.
On the surface, it may seem like an obvious reference to the essential commonality in vampire lore: a vampire drinking blood to sustain their vitality in their immortal life. However, the background of Bram Stoker's original novel and real history makes the quote multilayered and all the more satisfying. Its potency in Eggers' adaptation is part of what has made vampires truly gothic again, contributing to the relief of Nosferatu's great box office success following the woefully under-appreciated The Northman.

The vampire Nosferatu is one of the most iconic figures in horror cinema, most recently in Robert Eggers' Nosferatu. It is no wonder why, from his recognizable rat-like appearance, to his controversial similarities to Bram Stoker's Count Dracula. Over the decades, Nosferatu has appeared in several adaptations since his creation in Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror, the 1922 film directed by German filmmaker, F.W. Murnau.
Though many directors have chosen to adapt Murnau's film, few expanded upon the story as deeply as Robert Eggers does in his new adaptation. Eggers' hit film stays true to Murnau's original story of Nosferatu, but notable details and changes are added in to provide extra character development and immerse audiences in the haunting tale of Count Orlok. It is clear that Eggers' additional touches resonate with audiences, with Nosferatu breaking 2024 box office records by already grossing $40.3 million domestically. Still, it's fun to compare it...

This article contains spoilers for Nosferatu, now playing in theaters.
Robert Egger's 2024 horror film, Nosferatu, was nothing short of a Christmas miracle. As is typical of the director, Nosferatu is visceral and captivating, reminiscent of his feature film debut, The Witch. With such great attention to detail to the era and a wildly talented cast bringing its characters to life, even the most jaded viewer cannot deny how effective the film is.
Bringing horror back to the vampire genre, Nosferatu isn't just a win for Eggers. Vampires have been a popular subject matter as long as cinema has been around, but recent years have given the monsters a glamorous makeover. Egger's take on Count Orlok may have the juice to revitalize the blood and mayhem these creatures were originally known for. No one knows this more than Stephen King, whose follow-up to Carrie was Salem's Lot, a terrifying...

Deadline’s Read the Screenplay series spotlighting the scripts behind awards season’s most talked-about movies continues with Nosferatu, Focus Features’ gothic horror from writer-director Robert Eggers. Set in 1830s Baltic Germany, Eggers reimagines the tale with Bill Skarsgård as Count Orlok, a fictional character who originally appeared in the 1922 silent film Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror directed by F.W. Murnau.
Focus Features released the film on Christmas Day, since becoming Eggers’ highest-grossing movie at the domestic box office with $53 million and counting. It picked up five Critics Choice nominations among its recognition this season among critics groups.
In Eggers’ Nosferatu, estate agent Thomas Hutter (Nicholas Hoult) travels to Transylvania for a fateful meeting with Orlok, a vampiric prospective client. Ellen (Lily-Rose Depp), Hutter’s new bride, is left under the care of their friends Friedrich and Anna Harding (Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Emma Corrin) in his absence. Plagued by visions...

Robert Eggers’ new movie Nosferatu is a chilling, gorgeous vampire film based on the 1922 film Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror, which is an unauthorized adaptation of Bram Stoker’s novel Dracula. If you’re craving more takes on Stoker's classic novel after watching Nosferatu, you need to watch the BBC One miniseries Dracula, now streaming on Netflix. Like Nosferatu, it roughly follows the story beats of Stoker’s novel while adding its own embellishments. BBC One's Dracula was developed by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, the latter of whom also plays Renfield, and stars Claes Bang (The Northman), whose charismatic and charming performance makes this interpretation of Stoker's most famous vampire stand out among the rest.

The horror genre might have had a shaky time in the past year, but it certainly made its mark before the year ended. Robert Eggers' latest film, Nosferatu, was released recently, and the film has gone on to establish itself as one of the highest-grossing horror films of 2024. Eggers offered his take on one of the most iconic vampire stories in film history, with the adaptation of the classic 1922 German film, Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror, having some notable differences. The film stars Bill Skarsgård as the eerie and fearsome Count Orlok with the adaptation written and directed by Eggers.

Nosferatu's Count Orlok is one of the darkest depictions of vampires to date. He's definitely a departure from romanticized versions of the monster, particularly the glamorized Cullen family from the Twilight movies.
Director Robert Eggers said Nosferatu is his response to "sympathetic vampires" like Edward Cullen. Speaking to Radio Times, Eggers asserted the need to bring back truly evil vampires in modern adaptations. "As the cinematic vampire has evolved, he's become more and more and more sympathetic," he mused. "You know, first sort of sad and isolated, and then an anti-hero, and finally, climaxing with like Edward Cullen kind of stuff where he's not threatening. And so, how do you make a vampire scary again? And I said, well, I guess I'm gonna have to find out what vampires were like when people actually believed that they were real."

Robert Eggers’ new Gothic horror movie Nosferatu is a masterclass in dread and fear, but it has an unusual connection to a classic kids’ show from Nickelodeon. The American film-maker’s fourth feature film is a remake of the iconic silent German film Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror, which is itself a retelling of Bram Stoker’s Dracula. It has generated acclaim from both critics and audiences alike along with a box office return well above initial projections, and there has even been some chatter about major award nominations for the horror movie.
Oddly enough, Robert Eggers has already made special note of Nosferatu’s connection to another Nickelodeon show. The director called out the fact that younger moviegoers might have learned about the original Nosferatu from one quick scene in Spongebob Squarepants, the long-running animated show which featured an appearance from Max Schreck’s Count Orlok as in a...

With the release of Nosferatu last week, cinephiles and casual horror fans alike may be wondering just how scary Robert Eggers’ latest film is. Written and directed by Eggers, Nosferatu is a remake of the 1922 silent film Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror and stars Bill Skarsgård as the ominous Count Orlok, who preys on a troubled young woman and the residents of the fictional German town of Wisborg. While the answer to this question generally depends on your level of tolerance for horror, don't go into Nosferatu expecting a gorefest or an abundance of jump scares, but rather slow-burn, atmospheric, and erotic horror. The horror of Nosferatu lies largely in the film's pervasive sense of dread and impending doom as Count Orlok claims more and more victims, and those familiar with Eggers' previous work should expect a level of horror similar to that of his debut feature The Witch.

The actor’s brilliantly tortured performance matches the feral gothic atmosphere of this remake of Fw Murnau’s 1922 silent classic
The American director Robert Eggers has a gift for cinema that goes beyond storytelling, instead tipping into the creation of whole immersive worlds. Watch The Lighthouse (2019) and you can almost feel the sea spray flaying your skin and fraying the edges of your sanity. His 2015 debut, The Witch, was so steeped in 17th-century folkloric rituals that you could practically taste the wood smoke, superstition and terror. These films etch themselves into your subconscious. But even by his usual standards, Nosferatu, a remake of Fw Murnau’s 1922 German expressionist silent film Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror, is an unsettlingly atmospheric and richly realised work. There’s something about the macabre sensuality and mossy, crepuscular gloom of this retelling of the vampire legend that leaves a mark on the audience. It’s...

One of the buzziest films on this year's Christmas release docket was Robert Eggers' long-anticipated Nosferatu (2024). Starring the likes of Lily-Rose Depp, Nicholas Hoult, and Bill Skarsgård in the titular role, Nosferatu (2024) is a remake of the 1922 silent German classic Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror. The original was an unauthorized adaptation of Bram Stoker's Dracula.
Despite Stoker's family's attempts to have all copies destroyed, Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror survived and went on to become a seminal blueprint for the horror genre. Thus, in re-vamping (pun intended) and paying homage to such an influential piece of cinema, Eggers truly had his work cut out for him. So, how specifically does Nosferatu (2024) draw from its source material, and what are the major differences between them?

Warning: Major spoilers ahead for NosferatuRobert Eggers' Gothic horror movie Nosferatu revived one of cinema's oldest and most iconic monsters, which is itself an interpretation of the classic vampire Dracula, and in doing so invited comparisons between the two horror icons. As the titular vampire, Bill Skarsgård brought a completely new look and personality to the well-established character, reigniting the terror that pervades vampire lore. The scream king's interpretation is vastly different from the other actors who have played Count Orlok, and calls into question how far off it is from the baseline character of Dracula.
While Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror and, by extension, Count Orlok, are based off the novel Dracula, the original iteration of the bat-like Transylvanian nobleman had several noticeable differences from the literary vampire, both in appearance and in ability. Robert Eggers's latest film, Nosferatu, does so many things that either pay homage to or honor the original Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror film that was released a little over 100 years ago. However, there is one key element that differentiates the film (besides the fact that it isn't silent): the lack of black-and-white cinematograph. While the original film was shot that way out of pure necessity, black-and-white cinematography has become a stylistic choice more than anything.
In an interview with the New York Times, Eggers explained the creative choice to use color in the film and the desaturation he instead decided to aim for, saying:
"I never wanted to. It’s romanticism, not expressionism — and it’s been done very well in black and white before! Obviously, it’s a very desaturated movie, and I think some scenes have a kind of strength in expressing a colorless world,...

Robert Eggers’ lushly gothic remake of “Nosferatu” is a loving homage to silent films, with its dramatic black-and-white scenes and overpowering sense of creeping dread.
The eerie images of Count Orlok (Bill Skarsgård) hand sweeping over the entire city of London and — in one of the film’s most striking shots — the face of his obsession, Ellen (Lily-Rose Depp), is a nod to F. W. Murnau’s original 1922 film, in which Count Orlok’s shadow falls across his victims before the monster himself enters the frame.

Warning: The following contains major spoilers for Nosferatu (2024).
Bram Stoker’s Dracula is arguably the most important and well-known horror text in modern history. Originally published in 1897, this epistolary novel follows a young solicitor and his wife as they’re attacked by an ancient vampire attempting to move from his isolated castle to the bustling UK. Stoker’s gothic story was itself adapted from centuries of folklore describing a night-dwelling beast who seduces then sucks the blood of innocent victims. Twenty-five years after publication, F.W. Murnau brought Stoker’s novel to the screen in the 1922 silent film Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror. Set in 1838, this loose and unauthorized retelling chronicles a similar vampiric plague in the fictional town of Wisborg, Germany. More than a century later, Robert Eggers tackles these two classic texts while adding his particular brand of feminist mysticism. Rather than a helpless victim corrupted by darkness, his...

Folk horror master Robert Eggers' latest feature Nosferatu focuses on one of the oldest and most iconic movie monsters, and introduces a modern scream king as the latest incarnation of the unsettling Count Orlok. Bill Skarsgård's mustachioed Transylvanian nobleman is a terrifying and well-envisioned modern interpretation of the typically bald, pale vampire, and noticeably different from the other actors who have portrayed the character. While Count Orlok originated in F.W. Murnau's 1922 silent German Expressionist film Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror, the character has been seen in multiple movies over the last century.

Nosferatu, the tale of a predatory Transylvanian vampire, remains one of the most iconic vampire stories in cinema history. The 1922 silent movie by F. W. Murnau established what horror could look like, with the shadowy figure of the titular vampire remaining of the cinema's most iconic images. Like all great stories, it has begat many remakes. Up until this year, the most famous follow-up was Werner Herzog's 1972 version starring Klaus Kinski as Nosferatu. But now, one of today's most idiosyncratic directors, Robert Eggers, brings us his own vision starring Bill Skarsgård as Count Orlok, luring the monster out of darkness and into the spotlight once again. While plenty of horror fans and moviegoers are champing at the bit to see Eggers' version of the vampire tale, many might not know that it's not the only Nosferatu remake that we're getting in 2024! Based on the 1992 silent film Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror, this latest reinterpretation sees Skarsgård assume the role first played by German film star Max Schreck. For many horror fans, Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu is the most anticipated movie of 2024, perhaps even of the decade so far. It has had a troubled history with many fits and starts along the way before finally reaching screens after nearly a decade in the making (Bloody Disgusting first reported on an Eggers helmed Nosferatu in July of 2015) this Christmas Day. There is much at stake and there are big shoes to fill for this movie but if the pre-release buzz is any indication, the film may well exceed its monumental expectations.
The history of Nosferatu reaches back over one hundred years and is one of the greatest and most consistent of all horror legacies. The rules of the Dracula legend have been so mercilessly recycled within the vampire movie genre over the past century that they've lost all meaning. The Dracula character has become such a caricature that he is now a beloved cultural icon, like Santa Claus. What’s missing is a sense of realism and seriousness. Modern screen vampires are handsome and sleek when they would probably seem doomed, pathetic, and weary.
Werner Herzog’s great 1979 gothic horror film Nosferatu the Vampyre, which follows the design of F.W. Murnau’s 1922 film Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror while taking its basic story from Bram Stoker’s 1897 Dracula novel, wasn’t made for Creature Feature audiences. It’s a deliberate, solemn meditation on Dracula’s tragic loneliness,...

Nosferatu (2024), starring Bill Skarsgard, Willem Dafoe, Lily-Rose Depp, and Nicholas Hault, is the latest in a long line of vampire tales to hit the big screen. While it is not a strict retelling of Bram Stoker's 19th-century novel Dracula, it is related to the work of literature and numerous subsequent adaptions of it. This is especially true of the 1922 horror film, Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror.
Alongside Nosferatu's connections with all things Dracula, the original movie and its complex history led to various variations. Lawsuits, copyright contests, and a desire to bring new life, so to speak, to the titular vampire all created the...
