Dial M for Murder (1954) was a typical Alfred Hitchcock film made mid-career for the suspense icon. It was based on a play of the same name produced just two years prior and starred Grace Kelly and Ray Milland. The plot follows a London playboy intent on planning the perfect murder of his rich and unfaithful wife, played by Kelly. It would be hailed by critics upon its release, with a few mixed reviews. But overall, it became a staple in the Hitchcock canon.

What would movies be about if not for love? Since well before the days of Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman in “Casablanca,” romance has driven countless classic stories, setting up some of the highest highs in cinematic history to follow. Be it Cary Grant and Grace Kelly seeing stars in “To Catch a Thief” or Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal disturbing diner patrons in “When Harry Met Sally,” the 20th century was chock full of iconic romances that helped humanity fall in love with the movies. Of course, those titles were dominated by white artists telling largely heteronormative tales — meaning many (but not all) of the best and most inclusive romances have arrived this millennium.
Now, the best romance movies of the 21st century both resonate and surprise, showing audiences characters they might recognize from their own lives in new and surprising ways. Yes, finding “the one” is exceedingly well-frequented thematic territory,...

With The Brutalist, Brady Corbet and cinematographer Lol Crawley revived VistaVision for a 21st century cinema. In the process, they also brought the format back to the Oscar stage, becoming the first film since Alfred Hitchcock's To Catch a Thief to win the Best Cinematography Oscar for a VistaVision lensing. If you've read my reviews over the years, you might have noticed I have a passion for film form. This fascination encompasses the innovations that took over the medium in the midcentury, with the introduction of new aspect ratios, processes, and techniques after decades under the 4:3 Academy ratio hegemony.
I really love VistaVision, a happy medium between more extreme widescreen propositions and the classical square-ish proportions that dominated pre-1950s cinema. It's quite beautiful, harmonious and the technique itself lends itself to rich images, full of detail, crisp yet not in the sometimes bloodless way of digital filmmaking.

British royal family news reveals that royalists the world over are familiar with King Charles, and the former reigning monarch, his mother the late Queen Elizabeth.
The family’s trials and travails are well chronicled each and every day, especially the tawdry antics of failed Prince Harry and his first wife Meghan Markle. But Monaco’s royal family takes the cake in the royal scandal sweepstakes.
Known as the House of Grimaldi, the family have been in power since 1297, operating from the Palais Princier, a lavish fortress that looks out over the Mediterranean sea and the gambling mecca of Monte Carlo. Here’s a who’s who of the ultra glam royals who have been making headlines for centuries. That Is the Polar Opposite Of King

Alfred Hitchcock's The Man Who Knew Too Much (1956) is a film with an interesting history. The concept started off as a book of short stories by author G.K. Chesterton and morphed into a movie in 1934 directed by a young Alfred Hitchcock. It was a prime example of spy fiction before it was being churned out en masse. Most modern audiences will probably remember Hitchcock's later version starring Jimmy Stewart and Doris Day. In an unconventional move, Hitchcock chose to revisit his own film 22 years after the release of the first.

Jody Lee Lipes won for his work on the BBC drama “The Listeners.” Lipes took home the award in the television drama (UK Terrestrial) category. In the television drama (International/Streaming) category, Benedict Spence won his first award for his photography for Netflix’s “Eric.”
Daniel Landin was named the winner for his work on the FKA Twigs music video “Eusexua” in the inaugural cinematography in a music video category.
Speaking with Variety for Inside the Frame, Crawley described why he used the rare VistaVision format to shoot Brady Corbet’s film. He was born Archibald Alec Leach in South West England on January 18, 1904. As a teen, he became attracted to show biz at an early age, becoming friends with a troupe of acrobats and doing odd jobs while hanging out backstage at theaters. At 16, he would travel by ship to the United States, where he would eventually change his name to Cary Grant after signing his first movie contract in 1931. He became one of the most admired and beloved leading men that Hollywood would ever produce.
Grant’s suave looks and elegant voice served him well when he started acting in films, but his artistry and nuance on screen matured considerably over the years. He would work with the master Alfred Hitchcock several times, including “North by Northwest,” “Notorious” and “To Catch a Thief.” Grant was also quite deft with comedy roles, including “His Girl Friday,” “The Awful Truth,” “Arsenic and Old Lace...

There was never any question about what format director Brady Corbet would shoot “The Brutalist” on. Cinematographer Lol Crawley says, “We’ve always shot on film.”
“The Brutalist” tells the story of Hungarian Jewish architect László Tóth, played by Adrien Brody. He escapes the Holocaust and moves to the U.S., where he gets a taste of the American dream after meeting a wealthy industrialist who changes his life.
Brady and Crawley researched architecture photography and examined how it had been photographed. Speaking with Variety’s Inside the Frame, Crawley says, “One thing that came across in photographing any sort of architecture, you tend to want to have minimal distortion from the lenses. You may want to use rectilinear lenses so that you don’t get the same sort of distortion when you shoot a wide-angle lens.”

It would not be an overstatement to say that Alfred Hitchcock is the single most influential commercial filmmaker of all time. By merging artistic sensibilities with narratives that appealed to a broad audience, Hitchcock helped pioneer the concept of a “star director” long before Steven Spielberg or Martin Scorsese began their careers. Although Hitchcock was known for creating innovative camera techniques and pushing the technical limits of his projects, Hitchcock played an important role in establishing the careers of some of the most beloved movie stars ever. Although he briefly considered bringing his career to an early close, Cary Grant decided to end his retirement when Hitchcock asked him to star in To Catch a Thief.

Oscar-winning actress Grace Kelly made just a handful of movies before transforming from a Hollywood princess into a real life one following her marriage to Prince Rainier of Monaco in 1956. Let’s take a look back in the photo gallery above of all 11 of her films, ranked worst to best.
Kelly got her start performing onstage and in television before being drafted by Hollywood to appear in Henry Hathaway‘s ripped-from-the-headlines nail-biter “Fourteen Hours” (1951) when she was just 22-years-old. The next year found her starring as the concerned wife to an imperiled town marshal (Gary Cooper) in Fred Zinnemann‘s landmark western “High Noon” (1952).
She got her first Oscar nomination as Best Supporting Actress for John Ford‘s adventure yarn “Mogambo” (1953), playing one of two love interests (along with Ava Gardner) to big game hunter Clark Gable. The next year, Kelly upset frontrunner Judy Garland, who made a massive comeback...

Alfred Hitchcock’s To Catch A Thief is making its 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray debut in the UK this autumn – more details here.
Here’s a very welcome treat for collectors of the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray format. The 1955 Alfred Hitchcock thriller To Catch A Thief will be arriving on the format for the very first time this autumn, and in a rather spanking looking set.
The movie – which is liberally doused with romance – sees Grace Kelly and Cary Grant, a string of burglaries and a whole lot of fun. Because it’s Alfred Hitchcock and nearly 70 years old, To Catch A Thief is now filed as a posh slice of cinema, and perhaps it is. But just like something such as North By Northwest (which is due on 4K disc later this year too), this is a tremendous amount of fun, a blockbuster movie in vintage clothes.

Cinema isn’t a beauty contest, but if it were, Alain Delon surely would have won the title of the 1960s’ most handsome actor.
That’s a subjective call, of course, and as such, Delon is the kind of figure about whom writers tend to fall back on the word “arguably” — as in, “arguably the most handsome” — which is kind of a cop-out, as it leaves the argument to somebody else. When it comes to Delon, plenty have made the case. I loved Anthony Lane’s longform analysis of Delon’s allure in The New Yorker earlier this year. And none other than Jane Fonda, who co-starred with Delon in 1964’s “Joy House,” described him as “the most beautiful human being.”
The French star, who died Sunday, made more than 100 movies in a career that spanned 50 years, but for that one transformative decade in film history — beginning with the Patricia Highsmith...

French acting star Alain Delon, whose many iconic roles included Le Samouraï, Plein Soleil and The Leopard, has died in France at the age of 88.
The actor’s children said in a statement that their father had passed away in the early hours of Sunday, surrounded by his family and beloved Belgian Shepherd Loubo, in his long-time chateau home in the village of Douchy, in the Le Loiret region some 100 miles south of Paris.
Delon’s death marks the passing of one of the last surviving icons of the French cinema scene of the 1960s and 70s, when the country was on an economic roll as it reconstructed in the wake of World War II.

By the mid-1950s, Alfred Hitchcock had firmly established himself as the master director of suspense films, but he still enjoyed experimenting with new technology (including 3-D) and collaborating with novice actresses. On May 29, 1954, he released “Dial M for Murder,” in which he incorporated some filmmaking fads of the day and made a star out of an actress whose short career begat a long-lasting legacy. Read on for more about the “Dial M for Murder” 70th anniversary.
The thriller was written by British playwright Frederick Knott, based on his successful stage play two years prior. When retired pro-tennis player Tony Wendice (Ray Milland) discovers his wealthy socialite wife Margot (Grace Kelly) is having an affair with their friend Mark Halliday (Robert Cummings), he decides her death would be much more profitable than a divorce. He blackmails old acquaintance Charles Swann (Anthony Dawson) to stage a break-in and murder his wife,...

Watch just about any media from the mid-20th century and you'll quickly notice something: people smoked a lot more onscreen back then -- like, a lot more. Those born in the current century would no doubt be shocked to learn that even beloved cartoon icons like Donald Duck would light up a pipe or puff away on a stogie when the occasion merited (and that's to say nothing of commercials like the jaw-dropping marketing campaign where Fred Flinstone gets his buddy Barney and his wife Wilma hooked on Winston cigarettes).
Smoking was a useful visual shorthand for a variety of things. When Cruella De Vil spewed a wreath of putrid yellow smoke from her infamous cigarette holder in Disney's animated "101 Dalmatians," you just knew she was trouble, even before dog-napping entered the equation. Alternatively, when Cary Grant carefully lit Eva Marie Saint's cigarette in perhaps the ultimate Alfred Hitchcock picture,...

Alfred Hitchcock is undoubtedly one of the most influential filmmakers that has ever lived and his films have made a mark on filmmakers today. He has an unusual yet affecting way of inducing suspense and intensity in his films and his works like Psycho, Rebecca, To Catch a Thief, Vertigo, North by Northwest, and The Birds are proof of that.
Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo is one of his most acclaimed films
The latter is one of Hitchcock’ most audacious films and actress Tippi Hedren was the lead of the film. The director is known for his rigorous process of bringing his vision to life and this proved to be an excruciating experience for Hedren as she got pecked at by real birds following a last-minute switch-up made by Hitchcock.

When David Boreanaz read for FBI agent Seeley Booth in the "Bones" pilot, he instantly thought of "Harry and the Hendersons." It's not hard to see why. The character's relationship with his then newfound partner, the forensic anthropologist Dr. Temperance "Bones" Brennan (Emily Deschanel), readily evokes that between the open-hearted Bigfoot Harry and John Lithgow's uptight, disapproving patriarch George Henderson Jr. in William Dear's Oscar-winning 1987 fantasy comedy film. Much like Harry and George, however, Bones gradually opens up to Booth in spite of his shenanigans and even bids him a teary farewell when he rejoins his fellow federal investigators living in the wilderness.
Alright, alright, fine, Boreanaz actually thought of "Romancing the Stone." Even in the pilot, long before they became a romantic item, Booth and Bones' repartee recalled Robert Zemeckis' 1984 hit action-rom-com, itself a throwback to Golden Age Hollywood screwball comedy and action-adventure classics like "It Happened One Night" and "The African Queen,...

The caper or heist film is one of the sub-genres of action that has a lot to offer thematically and stylistically if done correctly. If we think back to “To Catch a Thief” or even the “Oceans”-series, the world these stories show are a reflection of a society based on materialism and property, with the thieves sharing the same obsession as the owners of the object they want to steal. On the other hand, given its potential to be an ensemble piece, the caper/heist feature also offers actors the chance to shine. Steve Yuen's “The Moon Thieves”, the director's third feature, tries to combine the two aspects of the genre, but fails to offer some depth to its otherwise intriguing premise.

Alfred Hitchcock’s films have been some of the iconic films that have shaped the genre of suspense thrillers. He is known as the Master of Suspense, and his filmography as a director has been an inspirational one. Films such as To Catch a Thief, Vertigo, North by Northwest, and Psycho have been considered his best films.
Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho is potentially the best suspense horror/thriller film
The latter is his most popular film featuring one of cinema’s most feared antagonists, Norman Bates, played by Anthony Perkins. The actor also managed to earn an Oscar nomination for the 1956 film Friendly Persuasion. However, he held one secret about his sexuality due to the regressive ideologies of the 50s.

There’s not a lot to say about Red Notice, and yet, it's getting a sequel. Like many films headlined by its three main actors, Dwayne Johnson, Ryan Reynolds, and Gal Gadot, it’s not so much a movie as it is an emulation of one. It flirts with the idea of jokes and references the vast history of more accomplished cinema, but there’s no attempt to ever live up to the legacy of thrilling escapist filmmaking that inspired it. Even worse, Red Notice hinges on duplicitous art thieves getting into globe-trotting adventures, which simply follows in the footsteps of movies like To Catch a Thief or vintage James Bond movies that were oozing with sensuality. It’s like a cruel joke to have a film in that mold be headlined by one actor who can’t kiss people properly on-screen, another actor who thinks the mere mention of boobs is funny,...

Hitchcock and Grant's collaboration elevated each other's work and created classic cinema with complex themes and high star power. Suspicion, their first film together, showcased Grant's ability to play a morally ambiguous character while maintaining his signature charm. Notorious was the pinnacle of their collaboration, featuring a powerful love triangle and representing Hitchcock's evolution as a director.
Legendary film director Alfred Hitchcock and iconic actor Cary Grant had a long-running collaboration and made four movies together between 1941 and 1955. A match made in heaven, Grant pushed himself to the limit in Hitchcock’s films and played characters that were much more layered and nuanced than many of the charming leading man roles he had become known for in Hollywood. At the same time, Hitchcock was provided with an expert performer who helped elevate his suspenseful thrillers with a high level of star power that ensured audiences would follow him as he explored increasingly complex themes.

You probably know the premise of "Bones." Set in Washington DC, forensic anthropologist Dr. Temperance "Bones" Brennan (Emily Deschanel) and FBI agent Seeley Booth (David Boreanaz) solve murders by studying the mortal remains of the victims. Or do they?
For the show's 200th episode, "The 200th in the 10th", the team decided to do something totally different (and non-canon). In this episode, the show moves to 1950s Los Angeles, where Brennan is an LAPD detective pursuing Booth, a jewel thief. At his latest robbery, Booth finds a burnt skeleton while safecracking and is immediately labeled as suspect No. 1 of the murder. Brennan, knowing it's not Booth's Mo, recruits her quarry to solve this new case together. Hey, after 10 seasons, a show has earned the right to swing for the fences!
"The 200th in the 10th" is made in the style of Old Hollywood thrillers, especially Alfred Hitchcock's 1950s technicolor noir films.

(Welcome to The Movies That Made "Star Wars," a series where we explore the films and television properties that inspired George Lucas' iconic universe. In this edition: The classic jidaigeki film "Three Outlaw Samurai.")
As the first feature film from the legendary Japanese filmmaker Hideo Gosha, "Three Outlaw Samurai," holds a special place in the pantheon of Japanese films. It tells the story of three samurai who battle corruption and balance their honor and obedience to the system that produced them with doing what's actually right — something that feels almost radical in this style of filmmaking. The movie's stars — Tetsurô Tanba, Isamu Nagato, and Mikijirô Hira as the titular samurai — were reprising their roles from a television show with the same name that had started the year before. According to the essay by Bilge Eberi that accompanies the Criterion Collection's excellent Blu-ray transfer of the film, the original show seems lost to time.

The origin of one of Hollywood’s most iconic stars is a story stranger than fiction.
Cary Grant, who appeared in movies including “To Catch a Thief” opposite Grace Kelly, was born Archibald Leach in 1904 to an abusive father in the sleepy city of Bristol, England. While he was a child, Grant’s mother was secretly committed to a mental health hospital and publicly declared dead. The actor only found out she was still alive when he was 31 years old.
Grant is now the subject of “Archie,” a four-part biopic from “Philomena” writer Jeff Pope, made with the cooperation of his ex-wife Dyan Cannon and daughter Jennifer Grant. The series charts the actor’s rise to fame, his struggle with his demons and his relationships with the most important women in his life.

Psycho revolutionized the horror genre in ways that continue to influence modern horror. Before Psycho, the Golden Age of Horror focused on science fiction and monsters. Psycho's success paved the way for more daring exploration of previously forbidden topics in horror films.
Despite his reputation as a master of scares, Alfred Hitchcock rarely descended into outright horror. He worked in the more respectable genre of "thrillers," rising to the top of Hollywood's A-list with polished films like To Catch a Thief and North by Northwest. But in 1960, he released a film that changed horror forever. Psycho, based on a novel by Robert Bloch and loosely inspired by the real-life Ed Gein serial killer, was something of a passion project for the director.

Remaking an Alfred Hitchcock film is an ambitious undertaking that requires a unique blend of familiarity, perspective, and affinity with Hitchcock's work. The successful remake of The Man Who Knew Too Much worked because Hitchcock directed both the original and the remake, allowing him to improve upon his earlier film. Other attempts at remaking Hitchcock films have failed, as they often struggle to live up to the original due to poor casting choices and a lack of understanding of Hitchcock's mastery.
With the news of a possible remake of an Alfred Hitchcock classic, it’s worth revisiting the only redo of one of his films that has ever worked, and why that’s the case. Robert Downey Jr. plans to remake Hitchcock’s Vertigo and has even claimed, “I think we can do better.” That quote was certainly a joke considering Vertigo’s reputation as one of the greatest movies ever made,...

The James Bond franchise has traditionally been something of an albatross around Mission: Impossible's neck. Comparisons between the two franchises are all too easy: both centered around a single intelligence agent and his support team, with each new movie presenting a different global threat to overcome. The Mission: Impossible TV series on which the Tom Cruise movies are based wouldn't have existed without 007, putting them at an immediate disadvantage whenever comparisons come up.
Mission: Impossible has fought back and established its own identity and brand separate from Bond's over the years. Some of that comes from the quality of the product -- Mission: Impossible movies are uniformly well-made and entertaining -- as well as their dedication to photo-real thrills over CGI. But it also comes because it draws from an earlier tradition for its storylines: Alfred Hitchcock's thrillers of the 1940s and 1950s. Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning...

Alfred Hitchcock played a major role in popularizing a screenwriting technique that is still used 43 years after his death. Hitchcock is undeniably one of the greatest filmmakers of all time and is remembered for iconic movies such as Psycho and Rear Window. While Hitchcock never won an Oscar, the innovative filmmaker is credited with changing the industry. One of his most popular innovations was the zoom dolly, most famously imitated by Steven Spielberg in Jaws.
Hitchcock is also the master of suspense, using various camera angles to make his audiences feel uneasy. The director was known for his intense storyboards, where he allegedly mapped out every detail of every shot. However, there's a lesser-known element of filmmaking that Hitchcock had a massive impact on. With decades passed since the filmmaker was working in the industry, this trick is still used in Hollywood.
