James Whitmore plays Victor Mature's father figure and helped raise him in the film, despite the fact that Mature was eight years older than Whitmore.

Victor Mature made this for Columbia while re-negotiating his contract with 20th Century Fox. His salary was $200,000.

The HR review noted that the film marked the second time that Manuel Donde, who plays "Red Cloud," had been made "to look like a lunkhead by the Columbia scenario department" even though the Sioux chief was a "Native American genius," born 1822, died 12/10/1909. He was one of the most important leaders of the Oglala Lakota from 1868 to 1909. He was one of the most capable Native American opponents whom the U.S. Army faced in the western territories. He defeated the U.S. during Red Cloud's War, which was a fight over control of the Powder River Country in northeastern Wyoming and southern Montana.

The fort used in this movie is the same fort used in the 1956 Randolph Scott movie, "7th Calvary".
