When John Wayne starred in a movie, he expected all involved to operate at a high level of professionalism — even though he was known for drinking on set, which forced some of his directors to work around his escalating state of inebriation as the day wore on. But Wayne delivered when it counted, and, because he was considered the most bankable star in Hollywood during his prime, no one fought him too hard on the booze.
Perhaps they should have. Combined with his reported five-unfiltered-packs-a-day cigarette habit, the once strapping athlete's health was a mess for the last two decades of his life. John Wayne was a humbled man early in the 1960s. His passion project, "The Alamo," had fallen well short of box office expectations in 1961. An epic Western about the siege of the basement-less San Antonio mission, Wayne directed the film and took its failure personally. He didn't need a hit; even at his lowest point in the 1970s, a Wayne picture at a certain budget level was an automatic greenlight. Still, Wayne was a prideful man who actively tended to his legacy; he was mindful of his fan base, and sought their approval. So Wayne came charging out of his corner in 1962, and knocked out every last naysayer with Howard Hawks' "Hatari!," "How the West Was Won," "The Longest Day" and John Ford's "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance."
The Ford movie could've been Wayne's Western swan song, but a rifle-toting Wayne astride a horse still held commercial appeal,...

Oi there, listen up! Amazon Prime Video’s list of new releases for June 2024 includes another season of its biggest, bloodiest hit.
The Boys season 4 premieres its first three episodes on Thursday, June 13. Based on the trailers, The Boys is really leaning into the political side of its social satire with a presidential election underway and Homelander on trial for the small matter of killing a guy last season. The season will continue to air on Thursdays, culminating with the finale on July 18.
Amazon is really leaning into its sports offerings this month as well. Fans will get to watch the New York Yankees, the WNBA, and the Nwsl several times throughout June. That’s in addition to a couple of sports docs: Power of the Dream on June 18 and Federer: Twelve Final Days on June 20.
But if you’re looking for something even more explosive than Homelander and Roger Federer,...

Robin Roberts was missing from the latest episode of Good Morning America following her big night out.
The GMA anchor was replaced on the show for yet another installment in the past several weeks.
Roberts had appeared on the program earlier in the week, blasting critics for attacking the ongoing Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce coverage.
The televised segment included a story featuring Kelce’s interview comments and a discussion of the relationship, followed by Roberts’ voicing her strong opinions.
She was abruptly absent on Friday’s episode, with her familiar co-anchors still appearing at the desk.
However, Roberts seemed to have a good reason for her latest absence after a significant event she appeared at in support of her latest project.

Robin Roberts was absent from Good Morning America for several days while away to promote another project she is heavily involved with.
The longtime GMA anchor appeared on several episodes of ABC’s morning program last week but was not at the desk with George Stephanopolous on Friday.
She also missed Tuesday’s episode, the latter of which featured the return of co-anchor Michael Strahan to the show.
Ahead of that, Monsters and Critics reported that Roberts took a trip with her wife and her “Glam Fam” crew.
The group went to the annual Sundance Film Festival held in Park City, Utah, until the end of the month.
A big part of Roberts’ reason for being there was revealed as she spoke about her upcoming television work, which has her in a different role than usual.

“Two smoldering women made all the danger worthwhile!”… heck, we didn’t even see ’em catch fire. John Wayne is charismatic and Andrew V. McLaglen’s direction is decent for once in this formulaic ‘easy listening’ pot-boiler from the Wayne school of laid-back ’60s entertainment. After winning the Vietnam War, our intrepid action man extinguishes 101 out-of-control oil fires, which appear to happen every twenty minutes. When nothing’s burning, there are plenty of domestic tangles to straighten out with the womenfolk. In support are Katharine Ross, Jim Hutton, Vera Miles, Bruce Cabot and Jay C. Flippen. It’s old-fashioned but not embarrassing — Wayne still has his charm.

Filmmaker Elegance Bratton, a Marine Corps veteran and Sundance Film Festival alum, is set to direct the documentary “Hellfighters.” The film chronicles the life of James Reese Europe, an African American jazz pioneer who served as a lieutenant during World War I in the Black military unit known as the Harlem Hellfighters.
“As a veteran and artist like James Reese Europe, I immediately knew I wanted to tell his story,” Bratton said. “WWI was driven by Europe’s desire for control of Africa — there is a cruel irony in that the Hellfighters believed the only way to gain full meaning of U.S. citizenship was to sacrifice their lives for an America consumed with their own degradation.”
“Hellfighters” explores the legacies of Europe and his fellow bandmate and collaborator, composer Noble Sissle. Europe’s father was a formerly enslaved man and employee of the IRS; his mother was a teacher.

Here’s yet another “inspired by true events” film , just in time for the somber Fall season. Somber, the right word for this one. Unlike this weekend’s other non-fiction flicks, it’s set in the not too distant past, not decades ago, but in this decade, the 2010’s. It concerns a group of men who regularly risk their lives, and often make the ultimate sacrifice, in order to protect their fellow men. And it shines a light on the families that must stay behind and hope that all goes well. You may be thinking that’s it’s another those on the front line, our soldiers overseas sagas as in the films The Hurt Locker and American Sniper. Well, these heroes aren’t on foreign soil, though they are on the front line, one made of flame. And with their special clothing and gear ,they could be mistaken for soldiers.

Andrew V. McLaglen, the son of famed character actor Victor McLaglen, who went on to a successful career as both a television and feature film director, has died at age 94. McLaglen got into directing by working on popular television Westerns in the 1950s and 1960s such as "Rawhide" and "Have Gun, Will Travel". He collaborated with John Wayne on the 1963 Western comedy "McLintock!", which proved to be a boxoffice smash. He would collaborate with Wayne on numerous other films such as "Hellfighters", "Cahill: U.S. Marshall", "The Undefeated" and their most acclaimed joint project, the 1970 Western "Chisum" which proved to be a favorite of President Richard M. Nixon. (Some of Nixon's political adversaries theorized that the film inspired him to launch the secret war in Cambodia.) McLaglen also excelled at making action adventure films such as...

He wrecked hundreds of cars, fell from tall buildings, got blown up and was dragged by horses. As a stuntman, he broke 56 bones, including his back twice! Memphis-born Hal Needham revolutionized the art of the stuntman in films such as How The West Was Won, Stagecoach (1966), Hellfighters, Little Big Man, and hundreds of TV shows. He was a regular stunt double for Burt Reynolds and began his movie directing career with Burt as his lead in Smokey And The Bandit, the second highest-grossing film of 1977 next to Star Wars. He would direct Reynolds in four more films including Stroker Ace, Cannonball Run, and Hooper, which was not a tribute to just stuntmen in general, but to Needham’s hero Jock Mahoney , considered the greatest stuntman in Hollywood (and the stepfather of Hooper co-star Sally Field). Needham’s Megaforce (1982) is an ‘80s time capsule kitsch masterpiece and the delirious The Villain...

Not pornography but a certain type of R-Rated film that one may have enjoyed at the Drive-ins in the 1970′s is the focus of Super-8 Sex Movie Madness November 6th at The Way Out Club. In this edition of our monthly film festival (now in its fourth year!) where we show edited version of movies (average length: 15 minutes) on old-school Super-8 Sound film, we’ll celebrate the days when men were hairy and women were natural (and hairy). We’re showcasing Sylvester Stallone in an 18-minute condensed version of The Italian Stallion, a 1970 soft-core sex film (originally titled Party At Kitty And Studs) he starred in six years before Rocky that was re-titled to cash in on his Oscar-winning success. It has to be seen to be believed! The other films we’ll be showing to fit this month’s theme are the Bela Lugosi in Ed Wood’s 1957 cross-dressing classic Glen Or Glenda,...

In 1970, six years before he ran up the steps of the Philadelphia Museum of Art to Bill Conti.s anthem in Rocky, Sylvester Stallone claims he was living in a bus shelter and needed money. So like many hungry actors he agreed to star and appear nude in a sex film and was paid $200 for two days work. The resulting film was a 60-minute drama with a $5000 budget titled Party At Kitty And Stud.S.
So what does the audience get for Stallone.s $200 gig? Basically, it is a standard-issue early 70s skin flick but it.s the type of arty skin flick popular at the time, two years before hardcore features like Deep Throat broke through to the masses. A .sex. film at that time meant lots of nudity and simulated intercourse. Hard-core penetration footage could be found in shorts and .loops. but features at this time usually just...

Typecasting is a terrible fate to befall an actor. Many of them have suffered from it over the years, accepting role after role in similar films with similar plots and similar characters simply because they have no real alternative. However, in spite of the risks involved there are also those who subvert this association; those who have elevated themselves to near legendary status within their chosen genre. Their performances define it and are woven inextricably into its rich tapestry. Two such actors are pictured above and are the subject of this article – one, a silent and anonymous loner with no time for small talk and very direct methods of dealing with his adversaries, the other a straight talking, no – nonsense peacekeeper with a trademark southern drawl. Both are perhaps best known for their westerns, although they also directed, produced and starred in a variety of other films too including military epics and ‘unorthodox’ police procedurals.
